  • Noir Des Carmes is one of France's oldest cantaloupe varieties. It's commonly accepted that this sublimely sweet, olive-black melon got its name for its association with the Carmelite monks who grew them in monastery gardens of France in the 1700s. But like many heirloom varieties, the story is more ... complicated. Learn more about this gorgeous variety and order seeds: www.rareseeds....

At first I thought this was an acorn squash based on the coat color.
Yet another fascinating story. The fine art melon portraits that you included were an added treat. 🌼

Growing Alacati Melon this year (2019) but will have to check out Noir Des Carmel for 2020. Thanks for bringing this melon to my attention. (👍#76 and comment #4). Best wishes from a Kate in Olympia, WA -- 4/25/2019.

I just posted a video “At the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Pete.” At 2:48 there is a still life with fruits and vegetables. I wondered what kind of melon was pictured? Have a great weekend!

I grew these this season along with Escorial (Johnny’s Selected seeds) and Petit Gris de Rennes. The Noir des Carmes melon is good, refreshing and juicy but not as aromatic and intensely flavored as Escorial. They are very prolific yielding about 30 melons from four plants. I’m in Southern California, zone 10a. I probably will grow this one again but will plant more area with other varieties. The petit Gris is not easy to grow so I’ll probably work on that one more intensely. I always grow and enjoy Escorial, my favorite melon to date.
