Interesting history of the Charleston Gray watermelon. As a kid growing up in Central Missouri during the 1960s and 70s, Charleston Gray watermelons were just about the only type of watermelon available in the supermarkets of my hometown. Now, you rarely see them in supermarkets, or even farmer's markets, presumably because people prefer seedless varieties. That's unfortunate, not only because of the rich, sweet flavor of Charleston Grays and its fine texture, but also because of its large seeds, which were perfect for watermelon seed spitting contests!

here in zone 10A. i was able to get watermelons this year due to the extreme heat late August thru Sept. Actually harvested a 29 lb. Charleston Gray. Very sweet! still have 5 on the vine growing well.

I have the seeds of the original garrison watermelon, eating one now lol. They can take massive amounts of water without splitting. Took forever to get the seeds.
