Cannock Chase MTB Trails - Follow the Dog - Difficult Red Trail

  • If you've mastered the Blue Perry's trail at Cannock Chase MTB Trails and are ready for something a little more challenging, this is the one for you.
Follow the dog has been around in varying guises for around 20 years now, and for 2023 they have given it a little TLC, resurfacing some of the trails and sorting out a few drainage issues and getting rid of some braking bumps, but there is still more they could do.
The Follow the dog loop comes in at 6.7 miles, and starts and finishes at the trail head in Birches valley. Whilst parking is a little pricey here, it does have all the facilities you need, toilets, café, bike shop and bike wash.
The first 2 sections of the trail are, in my opinion, probably the most technically challenging. Beware the very first step into stage 1! But, if you can ride this and the following Stegosaurus, you'll have no worries on the rest of the route. If you find them a bit daunting, do the first 2 sections of the Blue, then switch across, this is also a good point to join if you've done a warm up lap of the Blue first.
This route is often referred to as the Blue Dog!
The whole of Follow the dog is a great step up from the Blue with nothing too challenging, everything is "rollable" so even if you make a mess of it you should be OK.
Have fun, and let us know what you make of it.
And then after a few runs maybe try the Extended loop of the monkey trail which is still graded Red, but is somewhat more challenging.

Hi, great video, very informative. I’ve lived in the area for 13 years and only ever done road cycling and commuting.
Now at the grand old age of 54 I’ve finally got into mountain biking. When I say “got into” what I actually mean is that I am completely and utterly hooked!
Got a Boardman MHT 8.9 on the Cycle2Work scheme and did my first ride last week. I did Perry’s trail a couple of times and loved every single minute. I couldn’t wait to come back (the following day😂) and do it all again.
I’ve got used to the bike a bit more now and also grown in confidence where my own abilities are concerned.
I went back again this morning, and as it was very quiet over there, I had a go at some of the Follow the Dog trail.
I really enjoyed it though I didn’t do all of it. Got up Cardiac Hill okay and there were a couple of those rocky bits that you mentioned at the beginning where I got off and pushed the bike.
I think that as my confidence grows I’ll be able to do those no problem, though I do think that a dropper post would make things a lot easier, so that’s an upgrade I’ll definitely do to the bike.
Thanks again for a great video, I’ve subscribed so that I don’t miss any content.
    Regards, Chris.

There's plenty of free parking nearby, but if you're a regular it's worth buying an annual parking pass.

Strangely, I've just got a gravel ebike and was only thinking this morning what would it be like on Follow the Dog, maybe I should have a go and video it.
