Was an absolute pleasure to have owned this very car for the past 14 years. Having grown very attached, it was very difficult to let go of it. A huge thanks to Matt for being a pleasure to deal with, finding it a new home, and giving the car a fitting tribute video 🙏

Good work! The world would be a much better place if everyone looked after these types/age of cars and kept them on the road. I'm doing my bit anyway by driving my 10 year old Mondeo and servicing it at the main dealer every year. Can't afford to do anything else.

    • @tlangdon12

You should try to find a reliable local mechanic that can take care of it more cheaply than the main dealer. I'm running a 17 year old Mondeo, bought four years ago. I only use the main dealer for the brake fluid change because my mechanic doesn't have the software to purge the ABS pump.

Bought the estate version or station wagon as it was known in the United States.
    It had a 1.8L turbo and five-speed.
Very reliable up to about 100k miles and then it developed a lot of electrical niggles and eventually got to the point of filling up the oil and checking the fuel because of oil leaks and burning.
They are still a fairly common sight on the road.

Another great video. 3:57. The hinges for the arm rest are known to break as well. 4:23. The front wings rust out just behind the tire because the debris that lands in the vents where the windshield wipers reside travels down to the bottom of the wings and has nowhere to escape. Lifting the rear of the liners and cleaning out the debris every 6 months is part of my maintenance schedule. 8:02. What are rear parking sensors? I get just as excited about these cars. One of the most handsome sedan one can buy and in my opinion, the Mark 4 is THE best looking Bora (Jetta) ever.

Matt, I had a silver 115 tdi sport and a silver 130 tdi Highline. The sport was cloth interior and the Highline was black leather. Both cars were fabulous. They started every time off the key and never broke down on me. The Highline was a particularly special car. Lovely thump when you closed the doors and were amazing on fuel as it purred along in sixth gear. Loved the shape of them; the rear quarter line looked fantastic. One of VW's better moments in my opinion.
I'd have another one again, but for now, am having a lot of fun in my A2 tdi. You'll need to do a review on one of them, should you ever get your hands on one. Incredible little car, which still looks amazing today. Great video Matt and great channel. Regards.

I’d never thought I would be watching a tribute video of my car Matt! My father bought one new in white in 2001 with the slow 1.4 16v engine. We had it as our only family vehicle until He gave it to me some years ago as I was looking to buy something for myself, plus he got a company car, and I’ve been using it everyday ever since. As we speak it now has 398.000kms and apart from oil burning issues (needs 300ml of oil every 1.500km) it has never ever left me or my family stranded on the side of the road. I’ve been literally all over the country (mainland Greece and several islands) with it, it’s so comfy quiet and easy to drive that long trips are a bliss. Part of me wants to keep her, give her a full restoration and have her as a "forever" car but at the same time I’m thinking it’s time to move on. Idk yet 😅

Brilliant Video Matt Nice to see you not moaning at the end of a video that you only broke even or just made a £100 profit. But Delighted you made a good return on the Bora. Had a few in my time, much better than the equalitive Golf. Great content . Looking forward to the next one.👍

i cant believe that matt has somehow managed to find a 1.9 pd tdi bora that is in good condition, looked after and not molested. 99% are slammed to the floor, reeking like crazy, making double the power and are usually rotten

My mom had VW 1.9 SDI until some psycho motorcyclist rear ended in it at a high speed. Thankfully my mom and motorcyclist is alive and well. Recently we sold it to a young guy who wanted to restore his Bora. After sitting for 2 years, our Bora just turned on like it was just parked yesterday and got itself on the tow truck.

The Bora is a fantasic car.
I had an 06 Jetta (based on the mk5 golf) in the same Shadow Blue colour. It too had a PD engine. It was an early 2.0 TDI 140bhp but with the good BKD engine code that doesn’t tend to suffer from oil pump issues.
It served me really well for 8 years in fact and I sold it over 2 years ago with 184k on it. This video just prompted me to check the MOT history and its still alive and well. Done 232k on last MOT.
One thing I always remember about the Jettas & Boras was they were such good value compared to the equivalent Golf and the amount of extra equipment you always got as standard that would have been a hard to find / expensive extra on a Golf.
I wouldn’t like to be a private individual buying one brand new though as they depreciated like hell. They cost on average around £1500 more new than the equivilant Golf but by the time both cars were 3 years old the Golf buyer was a few grand better off. Thats the issue with small saloons like this in the UK they are a minority interest

That 1.9 PD engine is the absolute best of Diesel reliability. And the best we used in the Private Hire Taxis ever! Seen them regularly hit over a million miles on the original engine. Keep a hold of that car, 150k is hee haw for that engine. Great find Matt. Keep up the great work and hello from Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ps....its snowing here!

Fabulous car Matt, ticks all the boxes, just enough tech and safety for 2023 and probably will be as rare as Jettas are now in a few years. I’m glad it’s sold so I don’t feel the need to buy it and preserve it, I had no need for it as we’ve already got three cars at home!

Great to see you upbeat and enthusiastic about it after some of the rubbish you've had to deal with lately! I've always fancied trying out the V5 version. Weirdly interesting engine layout and I would imagine it would sound a bit different. Have you ever driven one of those Matt / anyone on YT?

My daughter moved to California last year and yep Bought an absolutely mint Bora 2L petrol, DSG, leather, full toys. with 171,000 on the clock. Like the one you just reviewed, it had been properly looked after, 11,000 miles later and she's still happy with it. Gotta say the used car prices in the states are nuts, though apparently the new car market is 'cooling'... Great video as ever Matt, thanks for taking the time.

Hi Matt, not Bora related but my wife’s sister is after an MX 5. She sent me a few to look at and whilst they were all nice enough I advised her to use Car Vertical and I found myself subconsciously typing out almost verbatim your Car Vertical spiel from your videos ! Keep up the great work mate, love the videos, all the best from a fellow North Westerner now living down under ! PS I don’t suppose you’ve got any MX5’s in stock have you 😉
    Cheers, Ian.

I used to have a PD150. Loved it, never let me down, was fairly quick for what it was and very economical. I once did West Sussex to Northwest Yorkshire and back (approx 500 miles) and still had half a tank of diesel left when I got home. She was on just over 200k when I parted ways, which is nothing for one of these. Wish I still had it…

I had the Seat Toledo version of the Bora, 51 reg, petrol. Superb vehicle, lovely interior and went like the brown stuff off a shovel. Got it 2nd hand, one owner, 4 years old with full service history.
Had it 5 years, usual services and only had to replace the rubber seal around the driver's door.
Behind the wheel it was part of me-no issues whatsoever.

Can't beat that VR6 sound. I've got a old Mk2 TT with the 3.2 VR6 in it. It makes those silly bangs when I change gear on the padles. That's very rare with leather interior. I quite like a grey leather. Grey is rare in itself

So many memories with the Bora. Two of my mates had them when we were just starting out driving, because they tended to work out cheaper to insure than the usual 1 Litre hatchback options. They are a bit dull, but will always hold a place in my heart! I think they got the styling right too, because even though they are old now, they've never looked ancient like some rival cars of the time do today.

Oh brings back memories of my Golf MK4 GTtdi with the 115bhp version of the engine. Felt so solid and would go on forever with maintenance. Sold it at 188k, and missed it. Bought a Focus C-Max 1.8, very nice to drive, but felt like an Airfix model compared to the Golf...

I had a 2003 Bora 1.9TDI bought second hand in late 2004 in exactly the same colour but a lower spec as mine had a black cloth interior. I loved that car but the heater matrix started leaking about the time I had paid my last HP payment so I got rid. I still think about it to this day. I wish I'd kept it. I think it had about 25000 on the clock. If I still had it today, given my low mileage, it might have a similar mileage to this one, maybe a bit less and I would have looked after it (as I do all my cars). Instead I have chopped and changed and spent a lot of money in the process. Thanks Matt for the trip down memory lane. I feel almost emotional!

I had a blue 1.6se as a company car, it was great. better equipped than the Golfs the other reps had and a bigger boot for my stand and sales bumpf. The Seat Toledo (with the A3 interior) is similar and also underated.
