Mountain Wilderness Adventure in Alaska

- Standing on top of the mountain the vast largely unaltered landscape of southeast Alaska features a gorgeous panoramic view of rugged mountain peaks, thick pine forests and pristine lakes. In the summer months snow still covers the highest mountain peaks while in the lower elevations berry bushes burst with over a dozen different species of delicious wild edible berries. In this video I document a two-day adventure hiking one of many mountains in Baranof Island, Alaska and minimalist camping by an alpine lake near the top at 2700 feet (823 meters) elevation. It was actually a three-day adventure but due to the amount of time it took to hike the rugged terrain and shoot the video I show just one day and overnight experience.
My good friend Ben Dever joined me on this adventure (look him up on TH-cam). We brought camping gear in anticipation of cold weather but the days and nights were unusually warm on this excursion. I had intended to build a shelter out of pine branches but due to time constraints I did not build one. I always get so involved in shooting video that I fall behind schedule. At this elevation no large trees grow and I would have had to hike at least 500 feet (150 meters) lower in elevation to find tall pines. However, the night was not too cold (low temperature was probably about 50˚F (10˚C)) and keeping a fire burning all night provided enough heat to lie on the ground and rest next to the fire.
Watch as I show how I make a simple buckskin poncho to keep warm, identify several wild edible berries, jump into the cold lake (about 48˚F (9˚C)), show what I take with me for a protein source, use the knife Ben let me borrow to cut firewood, start a fire using flint, and capture some breathtaking imagery of the pristine landscape.

Some of you people wouldn't know a survival video if it slapped you in the face! This was a short three day adventure, never intended to be a three month endurance survival episode so understand it for what it is. It is an example of short term survival with minimal equipment. In an unpredictable alpine situation in mountainous terrain, he made a buckskin poncho for clothing, found, identified, and ate several kinds of wild berries to obtain calories and nutrition, started a fire with a flint, cut firewood with a knife, and bathed nearly naked in a ridiculously cold 48 degree lake.
My friends, as a certified dark water rescue diver who was on a fire department rescue team I have trained in water that cold wearing nothing but a pair of swim trunks as he did. That in and of itself is a challenging feat to pull off. Water that cold takes your breath away in mere seconds. And it is highly dangerous thing to do alone, even if you are trained for cold water and a skilled swimmer or free breathing diver. One needs to be in prime physical condition for attempting swimming in this kind of water. It's a heck of a way to just take a bath, that's for sure!
No he didn't have to fight off a wolf bare handed or contend with an unexpected blizzard. He didn't have to set his own broken arm or hike 30 miles to get back to civilization. Gee whiz, does every survival or bush craft video have to be an epic adventure with drastic situations to prove it is a survival video?
He didn't have to even catch and cook a fish for dinner but I fully believe he is well able to do so, using self made hooks and primitive cordage....or maybe a rock weir....or a woven basket style fish trap. The point is on a short trip such as this there was no need for him to demonstrate every possible survival technique or skill he knew.
Part of the awesomeness of this video, or nearly any Alaska video, is just the ability to roam the countryside and capture stunning videography, which is a challenge in a primitive setting that is nowhere near as easy as he made this look.
I give this video 5 stars! it's magnificent. And I have subscribed and look forward to more.
Damn! What an awesome comment! Especially reading all these other comments that have been hacking at my shins trying to bring me too my knees. It's true this was an easy adventure. I did get carried away with capturing all the beautiful scenery that I didn't have time to make a shelter but heck out was warmer than I expected it would be and didn't even need a shelter. When I go in an adventure I don't know what will happen. It's a documentary. I did see two bears but they ran off before I could even get my camera out. People expect a lot of drama but sometimes it all goes so smooth. I feel I shared some practical information with the berries and fire starting and carrying dried meat for protein. And yeah, swimming in the cold water is challenging. The coldest I've swam in was 39 degrees. I stayed in just two minutes. In this video I went in three times to get the various shots. Thanks again!

@@ChadZuberAdventures Press guy?? Scenery is great. He sure is armoured to those scenes where he stops like he is modeling for an Alaskan travel magazine a lot. A person does not have to be a TH-cam movie star to know how to be a woodsman. So what about your resume. Some of us were combat Marines 51 years ago, but that does not change the price of a cup of coffee anywhere. When you post videos or comments, you have to expect comments back.
Will you ever be done blaring your ego?? That hot cup of ego is already overflowing... Thank you for your service.
No problem. If I knew then what I know now, I would probably speaking Canadian.
Just breathtaking scenery . Makes me feel like an alien stepping onto a different planet everytime I've encountered such gems

Its funny because he gets amazing shots of him walking away from the camera, but you know he has to jog back to grab it 😂

I always think that when I see people's solo trip videos. That's why I don't do solo trip videos
Really enjoyed this video, despite the title is a bit misleading, the scenery is outstanding.
Just a few moments like this added to a movie would improve the experience ten fold. No talking, just doing and being.
What a breathtaking sight, tranquil and peaceful, serenity at its best just WOW!!!! Love that mountain and lake.
I love the respect you show to mother nature. As soon as someone disrespects or ignores her warning signs....Those are the ones you never hear from again!
Takes skill what this guy does. Very meticulous in his approach to this wilderness. How he stops to access is good.
But one thing your missing! You need a walking stick in AK! I never leave home, or I find one along my travels into the wilderness. It tells me if danger lies in front of me, acts as a 3rd leg.
It saved my life before and I cannot do without when I'm out there!
Yeah I agree. A walking stick is immensely useful in this kind of terrain.
This is where our village will be after we finish getting all of the infinity stones from Area 51

I am glad to see you, my friend! You have great video again!👏 Good luck and new discoveries !👍👍
I was amazed at the vast amount of berries you found on your survival hike. I payed very close attention to every move you made. I could see that you carried the small simple tools my Mom told me to always pack in a can in the car. A garbage bag as a poncho because it's waterproof and windproof. Great video.

Yes, this place is unbelievable
I live in Alaska, but have not seen such beautiful footage of Baranof. Thanks for that.
I live in the alps, in italy.. and so , unexpectedly, this scene looks familiar to me. And surprise: i didn't know that in Alaska there is the same blueberry we have here where i am. Lovely video.
Yes, a very similar species grows in Europe.
Alaska is probably THEE most beautiful state we have. I was there when I was little, and I really miss it :( I mostly miss the beautiful untamed wilderness. Nothing can compare to Alaska's natural beauty. If I could go back there, I would. I'd go on adventures Every. Day. ♥
A big thumbs up just for the scenery alone! The video quality was some of the best I have seen and I really felt present in that location so the camera work was top notch as well! Keep pressing on my friend and thank you for sharing your art!!

I was born and have lived up here almost my entire life. Outside of 1 year, if you stitched all the months I spent away together, I have been in Alaska. My advice is that if you are out in the wilderness, always make a shelter before you go to sleep. It doesn't matter what season it is. In the summer, it is to make it a bit darker so you can sleep easier. In the fall and spring, to keep you, your firewood, and provisions dry, in the winter it is to keep the snow off you, and easier to stay warm.
Unless a bear is actively stalking you, or you sneak up on it you have nothing to worry about. Simply back away slowly and deliberately with your arms raised unless you have a magnum. Moose and wolverines are what you have to worry about.
Moose are unpredictable walking tanks. Unless you have trees to play merry-go-round with the Moose, don't walk up to them. If you see a wolverine, get out a weapon and keep it in site. That thing is more dangerous than the Moose and bears up here.
My god i love this video.. After a loooooOOOng day at work this was just the meditation i needed! No loud techno music killing my ears, no constant yapping while just filming your own face, just straight to business..and the shots are killer aswell might i add! the scene at the start where you made the poncho with the closeups was great! Cant wait for my vacay so i can get the hell out of the city! Say hello to your newest subscriber:) Good wishes from Norway.
Hi Chad! I don't know if you read the comments, or even reply, but if I were face to face to you, I'd tell you straight up people suck! Try not to let the haters get under your skin. Letting them get to you is equivalent to dropping to their level!- probably something you've heard your mom say a million times but it's time to believe it! She was right! I stumbled upon one of your vids yesterday and I've been fascinated and binging ever since!- I don't see any of your haters' vids with them risking life and limb to bring us dead serious survival scenarios and making it look easy! But I do see yours, bottom line. Keep calm and carry on, and leave the haters far behind you!
Thanks a lot! I truly appreciate your support. Sometimes it does get under my skin. Criticism is fine, and I take it seriously, but full-on insult and name calling makes me feel like I'm in elementary school again. I'm not great. There are much more skilled survivalists out there and I started late in life but most of my life I dreamed of doing this. Thanks again so much! Much love to you.
Gracias por todo el trabajo que te tomas para mostrarnos estos impresionantes paisajes y enseñarnos sobre la naturaleza 😊

@@x-ray5036 , not unless you can afford the land to own... othewise, your a just a property squatter on public or private land that isn't yours to just live on and do with as you please.
@@grinninggoat5369 Public land belongs to all of us, and if you're a resident of Alaska you've got a lot of opportunities to hunt, fish, and forage for subsistence in much of it.
@@alexhamon9261 , public land doesn't belong to you... it belongs to the government and held in trust for the people to equally share pleasure in. No single individual has the right or authority to settle, remain to occupy, build upon or live in a permanent dwelling upon or alter any part of it without consent of the governmnet (or private owners on private lands) held in trust for the public.
Public land might be everyone's parks to enjoy, but it isn't theirs to start makimg their own rules, building huts or cutting down tress at their own leisure or without regard to others it must be shared with. Otherwise, those that do that are no less selfish than they claim the government and private land owners to be.
On public land, you have to deal with what other people don't like you doing there that disturbs them or the nature and purpose of the public place and you can be asked to leave, fined or imprisoned by the government, therfore... it does not belong to you or any other citizen entitled to be there.
If public land truly belonged to you and the people, you actually could occupy it and live there permanently without another's permission or worry of what others thought about it.
I know saying, "public land belongs to us all" sounds nice and fluffy to many people's bleeding heart but, it just isn't so to the degree many want to push it for their own particular use and causes.
