I was chatting about your mass heater to a friend. I told him how it was built and that you had some trouble getting enough draft. He had a very interesting take on it, he compared it with Russian mass heaters used in Siberia to heat during the winter. He said they have one fire that heats the mass heater but that the chimney often stalls from the heat extraction into the mass heater. They work around this with a tiny fire at the base of the chimney to create draft. It's a though., I really love your buildings and innovations.
Yes, I’ve been told this before. I suppose I’m extremely cold climates they need to do that. Here it’s not nearly as cold. I only have a draft issue when I first light the fire. After it warms up a little there is enough draft.

Hey Chad, the time lapse is a great addition to this video. It really shows, how much time actually goes into doing all of the construction work. I hope everything continues to go well, and you manage to finish the hut before the cold hits!
@@ChadZuberAdventures want to add up to his comment, I've also been really enjoying the time lapses in these past couple videos. Keep up the good work!
I love how much he gets into building and how excited he is to finish the hut off! I just hope his back will feel better because he won’t be as cramped in a small hut this time around!
I'm binge watching your channel and enjoy seeing all your creative hard work. The horizontal chimney is a good idea and seems to help alot compared to a normal vertical chimney that allows alot of the heat to escape. What you did is great but i think when wood burns it first burns vapors then the carcoal burns. "Rocket" stoves I think partially burn and release the gases then they finish burning at a very high temperature in the horizontal chamber. I'm just being nit picky on the word "rocket." Actually if there was a lip inside the firebox along the roof, before the gases traveled horizontally it would help trap the gases in the combustion area. The outer opening top edge would need to be lower than the interior ledge. What you did is great. Love watching your work.
I was admiring the engineering. The adobe bricks are created in specific sizes to suit each purpose yet each section interlocks with the next quite precisely. It appears that the heater/fireplace draws well and is functioning perfectly a feat that is not all that easy to accomplish! As always, a real pleasure to watch.
Yes, I try to envision and plan the different sizes of bricks that I will need. They don't need to be perfect though because I can add more or less mortar as needed. The heater is working well. I'm quite pleased with it.
Just when I needed something good to watch over dinner, Chad pulls through, thank you sir I know it's another banger coming up, thank you for all your hard work putting together such an informative and entertaining series.

Yes! I love that time lapse with the light of the moon illuminating the landscape and the fire coming and going. I would fall asleep and the fire would burn out and then about an hour later I wake up and get the fire going again.
@@ChadZuberAdventures I suppose, when you go home to your family you get your restful sleep then. To keep the fire lit is a basic necessity. But the interpretation is not a good night's sleep for a arduous work the next day.
Hey Chad, a trick my grandfather taught me years ago if you get cold, all you need is a blanket and a candle. Sit with the blanket over you like a tent. You light the candle once your in and it warms up both you and the blanket very quickly. Stay safe & warm out there.
Might actually WORK, IF he can find a beehive, and obtain the wax without getting STUNG too badly. He could ALSO make good use of the light in the completed hut (and the honey too for that matter). ESPECIALLY since he intends for the hut to be more draft proof (read no windows, and a door to close it off). But harvesting it COULD be quite dangerous, especially since Africanized bees are fairly prevalent in the south west. And then there's the fact that bees aren't native to the Americas. So if he's trying to remain authentic to only what was available back in primitive times, beeswax wouldn't have been available.
If I can find a beehive I may attempt to acquire honey and wax. I have actually done that technique before and it is fine as long as you are awake to tend to the candle and make sure it doesn't catch the blanket on fire. I intend to make blankets and use them in a similar way next to the heater and that will also work very well.
Always makes my night to see a video from you 🙂 can't wait to see the hut finished and you not in the cold may God continue to bless you on your journey and thank you again for bringing us along with you on your journey
Actually no, it's not the completion. This project is taking a long time. Part of the reason is that I still have to make a few more bricks and they take longer to dry now that the days are short and cooler.

This past summer I worked on a trail restoration crew and am currently in a parks restoration internship. The most important lesson I've learned was about the importance of teamwork collaboration. A group of people working together can get a looooot accomplished. It is such an underestimated power force. Watching these videos makes me think that if this is the end product of just one persons impassioned work, then can you imagine a whole group of people working and living together in symbiosis with the local ecosystem, to gather resources and build structures to create a decent standard of living? I think Chad is really really really on to something here...
I accidentally stumbled upon your TH-cam channel and now I can't tear myself away from watching your videos. Wow it is so great to see this hut and specially the heater coming together. The heater looks great and hopefully performs as good as you expect it to. Your persistence and dedication to "primal tendencies" is exceptional.
Love the rocket mass heater design. Have you considered making more of a nest for you to sleep in with the juniper bark? Or maybe weaving some more together as a blanket for some extra warmth? I know desert nights can get cold, even in summer.
Nights are perfectly warm here all summer long but yes, it is getting cold at night now that winter is nearly upon us.... Yes! I am planning to make a nice nest as well as weaving fibers to make a blanket and pillow. I have a lot of cool projects to do once I finish the hut. But at least I know that a nice fire will keep me warm enough through the night.

Dear Chad; great work amigo. I can almost feel the wonder of your old "shelter" (now dismantled) ; The wonderful simplicity of an open fire; I can almost feel the cold of the night, the wind caressing your skin, the air in your every breath, the view of the stars as they roll past the night... If- when the world falls into economic meltdown it is "men" like you who will rebuild the world into a better place. From Ivan Fitness, New Zealand.
Wow! The new hut is looking fantastic. It looks better than I ever imagined. . I was so excited to see the rocket heater work!! I had been looking forward to that. Just think, after night after night of a fire being in the fireplace the bricks will hold. a lot more heat. So glad it worked so well. Saying goodbye to the old shelter was hard. You had made it so comfy and homey. This new temporary shelter will soon be the same. The new pottery looks wonderful I love the colors. Just a suggestion that you have probably thought about is someway to block the wing on you from coming through the gaps in the bricks. Maybe turning the other way, put your head where your feet are , and put your back against the warm bricks. Would mean you would have to get up to add wood to the fire though, and your feet would get really cold.
Chad Zuber, cozy shelter, again temporary. Heart breaks when you pull them down. But going forward is necessary. Impressive continuity in showing what you are doing. As a layman I enjoy every aspect of your journey. The success of the rocket heater warmed our hearts as well. Keep going strong 💐
Chad, I am delighted for you! 🥳🥳🥳🥳. You have helped me keep going these last few weeks. I keep remembering that you are building and have a very difficult, long and tedious project. If you build, so will I! Thank you for building Chad! 💐
I wanted to take you all up that mountain a long time ago but I've had so many other priorities come up. It's a fairly tough hike with all my camera gear. I have gone up there several times and I will definitely be taking you there soon.
@@ChadZuberAdventures thank you very much. I can't wait to see you zooming the adobe hut from the top of that mountain 😅😅 and having a 360° turn. I really can't wait.
Love the motivation and dedication you show. One thing to consider on your rocket mass heater is that with the design you have here you are kinda missing the whole rocket part. What you have here is more of a masonry heater than a rocket mass heater as there isn't really a powerful draft of air causing the rapid and super efficient combustion that is the hallmark of a proper rocket stove/rocket mass heater. There is a specific design that causes the rocket effect and exceptional efficiency. Namely a J tube with the long heat riser covered with a larger barrel/box and this dumping into some horizontal flue before exiting out of a vertical chimney. You could do this with adobe bricks to form a J tube where the tall part of the the J is a narrow chimney maybe 4-5 inches across internal diameter, then surround that inside of a larger box so there is a gap of about 2 inches above the top of the J tube. At the bottom of the box the hot gases would dump into the bench through an opening at least 5 inch diameter, alowing the gas to rise up a bit and dwell in the bench where it cools a bit more finds the chimney at the bottom far end of the bench and then is carried up the chimney. The slow down of the gasses in the box outside the j tube and again in the bench would further absorb the heat and radiate it back all night. And while the bench would be only warm to the touch, the lid of the box right above the J tube would be very hot. There would be an option to make a hole in that lid that would seal tightly on a large clay pot and that pot be used for cooking however I think solid lid option to be easier and better for heating only. A separate smaller rocket stove specifically for cooking could also be made adjacent to the mass heater so you could have it burning only when cooking is required and some of the heat would assist in warming the shelter. Always interesting to watch!
My thoughts were he is making a nice rocket stove, but not "mass heater". You need to use the heat created to warm materials INSIDE the shelter, not outside where his burn tube to the chimney sits. Most mass heaters have a bench that the warm air is circulated through before exiting the shelter. This is done with a barrel usually, but he could use bricks, or make adobe tubes to conduct the warm air after it goes through a riser inside the shelter back down and through the bench.. Very little need for all the external construction.
The new hut is coming along nicely. The soot on the front side of your heater suggests you might want to make the chimney a bit taller to create more draw and keep the smoke from leaking into the interior. Once the hut is enclosed, you'll see even more smoke coming out the front of the fireplace.
I’ve been observing this and the smoke seems to come out the front when it is cold or when the wood is smoldering without a flame. When it burns hot no smoke comes out the front. I don’t want to make the chimney higher because it will be more difficult to protect it from rain. I am thinking to make some bricks to fit in the opening of the fireplace to make the opening smaller. That might work.
I wonder if a sleeping bench on top of the flue would work for colder times? Maybe wood could reinforce the adobe where needed for strength. I found out quick while living in a tipi that warmth and a full belly gave me the best night sleep. Your work inspires me to eat juniper berries and palo verde!
Yes, I can actually lie down on the top of the bench and place my legs over the fireplace. I may build a bed of adobe bricks in the future and place it next to the fireplace. We'll see. I have to first finish the hut.

It's so cool seeing the transorformation from day 1 having to sleep under a rock to quite literally building his own "house". Definitely inspiring me to get out and do stuff
Yeah, I am really happy with the quality of the natural resources here to make this all possible.
I just love your videos...can't imagine the patience you have brother...loads of love from India 🇮🇳
I can't believe I still have patience for this either!
ayy nice i have been watching your videos for awhile and this is awesome u finally got a little house and fire going cant wait to see more
Yes, it is coming together nicely and this new shelter is awesome!
This hut is really going to be amazing. It will be radiant heat from the fire. I hope you will have more room to stand
Yes, there will be plenty of room to stand. The diameter is nine feet across.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Thank you 😊
wow it looks amazing.
Ini yg saya tunggu😃
duuude that hut is gonna be soo sik! Thought it was going to be bigger, and then we saw the actual circumference, so what a relief haha!
The interior diameter of the hut is about nine feet and the top of the ceiling will also be about nine feet.
@@ChadZuberAdventures beast. Stay safe out there my guy.
I’ve been looking forward to this! Keep up the great work Chad!
I accidentally stumbled upon your TH-cam channel and now I can't tear myself away from watching your videos. I also watched the 25th episode of this playlist where you told me how you shoot your videos. It's really difficult and very interesting. I even temporarily paused watching the TV show to watch all your episodes. Thank you, it's really cool. Keep up the good work! Good Luck & Success!
Wow it is so great to see this hut and specially the heater coming together. The heater looks great and hopefully performs as good as you expect it to.
Your persistence and dedication to "primal tendencies" is exceptional.
Thank you, Chad!
@@ChadZuberAdventures thanks Chad. Love the fact that you respond on your channel. Looking forward to the next video.
Que buenos capitulos que sacas amigo, es increible tu esfuerzo editando, grabando y construyendo, ya sea la futura choza, herramientas, etc. Estoy muy agradecido de que subas esto.
Another great video, thanks for your efforts Chad!
Thank you for watching!
I can’t wait to see the end result
Me encanta ese lugar, es muy parecido a la sierra de baja California Norte, fui a santa catarina a tomar adiestramiento militar y me enamoré del paisaje y el clima, lo q daría por vivir ahí en la forma q lo hace nuestro amigo. Saludos y suerte.
Guau! Santa Catarina es bellísima. Yo he pasado por allí hace muchos años.
Muchas gracias Joaquin!
Yeah, I have thought of doing that. It just makes feeding the fire more difficult.
This is amazing and inspiring
Chad Zuber, cozy shelter, again temporary. Heart breaks when you pull them down. But going forward is necessary. Impressive continuity in showing what you are doing. As a layman I enjoy every aspect of your journey. The success of the rocket heater warmed our hearts as well. Keep going strong 💐
Esse é o melhor canal que existe sobre práticas primitivas.
keep working chad , we always supporting you
Thank you! Thank you!
Chad, I am delighted for you! 🥳🥳🥳🥳. You have helped me keep going these last few weeks. I keep remembering that you are building and have a very difficult, long and tedious project. If you build, so will I! Thank you for building Chad! 💐
The new hut looks vary well built & strong. i can't wait to see it when it's done 👍
Literally I feel like I'm part of this journey 😂. Next time take us on top of that beloved mountain 🌄.
Love to see the progression.
OMG new video. love it
Fantastic work: I find your videos not only informative but they are very peaceful. Thank you
The new hut is coming along nicely.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Sweet dreams...are made of these...hoka hey

Hey Chad! Good night from Spain! I would like to know where your interest in the Latino community comes from. Greetings, I really like your content, keep it up
Saludos! I grew up in a city that has lots of latinos, predominantly from Mexico. I worked at companies where many Mexicans also worked. I have also travelled extensively in Mexico. I'm very close to the latino culture.
Awesome video. Inspiring, congrats with the heater. Can't wait to see the finished hut. Thank you man.
Chad, And don’t worry about editing, get that hut built before the cold takes over! You have a short window! We will wait for you man! You gotta get it built before the days become cold! It’s practically improbable to work with wet hands in 40 degree weather! I want you to be able to sleep through the night. I’m worried about you, but I trust in your abilities. LOVE YOU CHAD

I wish Chad showed us how he stays in such great shape while doing this and what he does to maintain his gains during this.
His fasting a lot and work hard everyday to achieve that flat stomach and rock solid abs probably
Think of all the work he does, especially lifting heavy stones.
I am actually surprised that I'm able to maintain my physique without really even working out. It's been several months since I lifted any weights, other than these bricks and stones. I regularly do pushups and pull-ups and air squats, and a little running. Other than that I just work out here all day long. After the hut is finished I'm going to make some workout videos and share what I have learned over the years.
