I've just downgraded to an XL600R and find the learning curve of starting (and riding) to be something to get used to. One thing with this bike is that with the auto decompressor which engages with the kickstarter, there is no reason to have to jump on that kicker unless you only weigh 90 lbs soaking wet. The bike kicks relatively easily as compared to an old big bore two stroke without a decompressor, and jumping on it like that is a good way to break a leg when she decides to kick you back. Otherwise, good video, thanks for sharing! 🍻
Don't forget to tell 'em to hold the front brake (like you were doing). Also recommend turning the handlebars full left to avoid hitting with rt knee if she kicks back...JB
@@giannhssia5414 im a smaller person, and the one i got threw me over the handlebars... It was sitting for 20+ years and had an insalney dirty carb with the idle screw twisted all the way in so i cant blame the bike tho.
I still have my 1983 XL 600 though I bought a 2022 450RL. The bike has an automatic decompression valve that engages at the top stroke of the kick. The main tip is to turn the idle up a bit the screw has an extra large head very easy to turn by hand and most important never ever ever open the throttle while kicking or you will break your ankle. My bike had a warning sticker on the tank
When i got my xl600 it had been sitting for a decade so it was a tough first start. My dad who only rode big bore 2 strokes told me to pull the throttle and kick it, and that's how i ended up with a hole in my foot.
You can kick them over with your left leg if you sit backwards on the saddle. Just kidding! I meant with your left leg and standing astride the bike, not on it. I'm ambi on almost all limbs so maybe it is easier said than done. Also, if you kick it over with your left leg and you're off the bike, it kind of makes more sense with a cold bike since it's not going anywhere (fast) until it warms up. So you can stand around and adjust your helmet and gloves and make sure every thing is ready to go. These old carbureted bikes are very cold natured as designed...
Had an 89 CR 500 years back remember dropping it off at big 4 motorcycles near Brandon mostly worked on Harleys but I didn't have a truck to bring it anywhere else so that being couple mi ride from my house is where it ended up after they got a new clutch in they called me at work and said how the he'll do you start this bike I replied you gotta put some ass in it he laughed and said I guess we don't have enough here cuz we've all tried it then o laughed said ok man be up there couple hrs went home put boots on drove up there they all walked out mechanic pushing the bike an old trick was to lean it over to the right couple seconds then find dead center kick s*** out of it so I did first kick bwaa bwaa fired right up I proceeded to ride wheelies back and fourth appreciating them yelling he'll yah clapping raising he'll bike was a beast that couldn't help making a scene .Good times 👍
Good video but that’s not top dead center. I don’t know why people call it that. You are still in the compression stroke with the piston traveling up building compression. You build enough compression that you CANT get to top dead center without first using the decompression lever. IF you’d found top dead center it would have suddenly gotten real easy to kick, instead of real hard. Like I said. Good video. I wish people would just stop saying that’s top dead center when it’s not. Also, if that was top dead center and then you kicked it a little further past you’d also be skipping the spark plug firing at the top of the power stroke and defeat the whole purpose. 1. kick until it gets hard in the compression stroke 2. Pull in the decompression lever and push the kick start a little further to get you to top dead center. 3. Let the kick start up and kick hard. This will take the motor into the power stroke where the spark plug ignites the fuel and the bike should fire up. Great video otherwise. Understanding the why behind the procedure shows why it works. I currently ride an 86 XL600R and my old XR650R required the exact same procedure.
I disagree. What enables big four strokes monos to be kickstarted is that there's a full crank rotation to get momentum. A full crank rotation with minimal resistance. So the piston does need to be positioned just past TDC on the compression stroke. Just past the moment (a few degrees more than that actually) after the spark plug fires.
good explanation... I have the challenge that its not starting once its warm. So after some minutes ride if its warm you turn it of and will not be able to start it again until it cooled down. Any idea?
I owned a couple of Xl's and there great bikes I had that same year bike, I have actually ripped my tennis shoes soles off before Definitely pays to wear boots@@
That's a seriously cool bike man. It's like the Plymouth Superbee of dual sport bikes. The Holy grail. Did the pussy magnet come standard on that thing?
With these BIG single cylinder bikes you have to be careful starting them, i know of the odd person being thrown over the handle bars if not done just right.
My cousin was thrown over the handle bars by his XR600 he also said when takes off on tarmac do not use too much throttle because the torque of the engine rips the back tire too bits!
Hi, I want to restore my 1984 Honda XL600R and would you be able to help me find a Honda store that can sell original Honda parts & accessories for my old Honda model? I live in the Philippines and would need to buy these parts in the USA. I would appreciate any help from your end. Thanks.
Have you had any luck ? I have no idea about the Philippines. But online OEM parts are available online ... Not cheap ,but available. I had to piece a basket case 1987 xl 600 together over the last year ....ebay and those OEM Honda parts I found almost everything
Are you sure you want to get it at top dead center?? Remember timing is usually set BTDC- meaning before top dead center. You walk that Kickstart till it's on the compression stroke right before top dead center that's when it's going to spark you're going to force that last bit of compression it's going to spark and then the power stroke is going to go down. If you kick right at top dead center the engine has already sparked or should have. It's more or less going to be a dead kick.
Exactly. Lots of people call it TDC for some reason. It’s not. It literally got hard to kick because it’s still in the compression stroke. You release that compression so you can forcefully kick it through and into the power stroke getting the plug to fire and ignite the fuel
It's a lever on the left handle bar. It reduces compression. It's purpose is to enable you to position the piston just past top dead center on the compression stroke.
This is one of those bikes where the “if you can start it, you can ride it” rule applies. Nice bike.
Yup, that's what I used to tell them.
But then you warn them about the brutal kickback if they do it wrong, then they don't even want to try lol.
Good video. I'm glad I have a 2006 xr650l ..it's unbelievably easy to start. Push button for 1/2 a second with choke on..never fails.
Fuzzy Was plus no hurt foot but? I rather kick every time than push the button myself

Good video. I think you need a new rear shock there, Cory.
I had so many of Xls adn XRs that i believe they remember me so well , I can talk to the bike and make her start...😆 I love them same the TT
Great kickstarting lesson for your beast
You can lay the bike on it's side for a minute if it's really cold. It floods the engine a bit and will fire right up.
I had one of those in '84 to this day my right hand calve is bigger than the left.

Love this bike, what year is it ? dual carb or singel ?
It's an '83 or '84 -- the decals on the missing side panels would give the answer; definitely dual carb.
It's an 84
Incomprehensible. What is the pressure lever for and when to use it???
Good video. Can this bike put FMF exhaust?
i have to do that on my yamaha dt50r 1998 after the second kick and it start :)

Must be easier for a 7' lurch .....lol..immagine some 5'5 140lb guy trying that..lmao
I'm 5'7 but 120.... having a hard time with my Xl500 82 😂
I find it easier to bump start em, no kickback
You may well be right John. This old guy is 87 now and only bump-starts it. It's his daily commuter.

Bump starting can be hard on the clutch plates and pre-maturely wear them out.
Cool Profi
R U 2.10 mt tall or is the bike a toy?
Put down kickstand and stand on pegs while kicking
This guy is quite big. I don't think he needs the bike to be resting on the side stand.
For smaller persons, I fully agree with your comment.
Dude - step 1 is take off running shoes and put on some boots. Ask me how I know. 😂 I still have an '84.
As a 16 year old whos trying to fix this shit that can't start im definitely just gonna put crack in the carburetor

Prime the engine? What are you talking about? Also, are you stoned?
You aren't priming ANYTHING with a decompression lever pulled lol
This is very true. The first 4-5 rounds doesnt do anything for the procedure. But hey, if it feels good and it starts, good for him.
Bc oil doesn’t circulate when the engine isn’t running
Right...
