Honestly, this is the crispiest redesign I've seen from a single person. I literally thought this was an Anbernic from the thumbnail and it nails the look of 98-04 handheld aesthetics. Looks massively like a professionally made, official followup to Neo Geo Pocket Color. The volume wheel is a nice touch. It's a subtle playfulness that isn't gaudy. This is a superb build.
Which other redesigns do you like that aren't from a single person?
Let me just say, and I don't want to come across in a wrong way.
This is not only the coolest and most practical redesign for a handheld I have seen, not to mention the premium and elegant design.
But I'd also like to point out that you are the most authentic people I've seen in this genre. Your hands shake and your voice cracks, and you don't hide that.
At risk of coming across as judgemental, I'm actually appreciative of that much more! My voice cracks, and my hand shakes like crazy, and I repair and build consoles myself.
It's always frustrating to see someone do something like this so effortlessly in higher budget channels, where they just kind of do whatever they were doing and pull it off,
and when I try to copy them or follow along, I'm met with constant issues, frustrations, and crazy handshakes that often result in burning myself or messing up a solder.
You showing your countless revisions, your errors, and just being authentic really makes me feel like anyone can do these mods, and anyone is capable of doing something cool.
So for that, I'm subbing. Cause this is the kind of content I wanna see. Raw passion, mixed with a "fine I'll do it myself" attitude.
You're so kind, thank you very much!
This is so cool! I love how this community continues to evolve with new projects that bring life into our beloved handhelds.
I searched the coomments to see if anyone else had mentioned it, but yep, that volume wheel..
Great vid, I have never actually seen hot bed soldering done at home before, making those chip placements look flawless!
I'd love to hear the justification for making the volume wheel so front and center. It's practically as visually important as a face button, even though it's more of a secondary part of the functionality, less important than even a start or select button, I'd say.
Right next to the B button. Right where the right thumb would be resting. Insane.
This is amazing! My only criticism from a practicality and aesthetic standpoint is that the volume wheel looks like it's going to be in the way and prone to getting knocked during gameplay. Maybe turn that into a sliding switch on the side, or side volume buttons like on a DSi? In any case, an awesome project, looking forward to seeing where it goes!
Thanks! That was the initial thought, but space on the sides is tight, and doing it on the curved bottom edge would have been a nightmare. In practice, it doesn't really get in the way, and it's a very firm fit, so it's not getting knocked off. And I like it as a decorative element, haha.
agreed, volume wheel position seems suboptimal
@@leggomyfroggo It looks good as an decorative element specially if you do custom materials/metals/color for the volume wheel or even put a frog face on the wheel.
@@leggomyfroggo Would've it been possible to put the volume wheel in an indent like start and select? or is the pot too tall? Just a lower profile/seated in an indent would've really helped how it looks and practicality.
@@leggomyfroggo It reminds me of the volume wheel on some walkmen, I love it!
FINALLY, someone else with the objectively correct take that the GBA has the best form factor out of the entire Gameboy line -- i mean, i don't even have large hands and even i find the GBA SP to be cramped! This is an elegant build and a very well produced video. Your explanations are very clear and the narration in general is really charming. This was a very easy like and sub for me. May the almighty algorithm give you momentum 🙏
Agreed
The problem is despite the better form factor the neck pain is way worse. The SP was a godsend because form factor matters less than neck pain for a lot of us.
Love the design of this. However personally I'd add an outer shield to the cart slot just for stability. Maybe a clear plastic panel to still show the cart inside.
I lol'd when you used a frog mitt at 16:33 to clean off the cart shield.
Brilliant, my friend. Can’t wait to order everything needed and build my own. Really appreciate all the work you put into this!
I have a wide emulation handheld, but I was nostalgic for the vertical design of the original game boy so I bought the vertical version of the same emu handheld. Turns out the vertical design was way too small for my huge hands and made them cramp up horribly. Wide is absolutely the way to go. So much more room to grip.
This is one of the coolest, most interesting GB shell designs I've seen in a while. The final build came out looking great!
It’s definitely up there with the Slate and the Boxy Pixel Shells.
So excited for this! I’ve been dying for the release!!
I'm so excited to build one! This is seriously amazing work
Awesome to see this video. Been excited to see the process since seeing it in the Discord.
Really nice design!
Thank you for the video!
Love it! Such a great redesign, awesome work 🙌
I adore this, can't wait to see how you continue to iterate on it :)
CONGRATS on releasing this huge project!! Happy things came out looking amazing!! 😻
I love this project! Congratulations on your success so far!
I hope you keep iterating on it, I'm excited to see where it goes!
Amazing job. That's a really clean build. I love it when people taking modding to the next level.
That lil soldering plate seems so helpful, I need to get myself one.
This is CRAZY work. Cant wait to try this project
I can't wait yo see it in action, it's beautiful, congratulations 👏
Incredible design. What a triumph 🎉
This is super amazing. Congratulations on your creation.
This is amazing! I saw this on instagram this morning and didn't know what I was looking at but seeing the work that went into it is incredible. Keep up the good work!
This is awesome, I bought an all clear Gameboy color from your Etsy a while ago, crazy how your video popped up.
This project is so cool and seems straightforward enough! Thanks for all you do!

This is my first introduction to your channel and i instantly subscribed, definitely wanna make one of these now and will probably next year! thank you so much and have a great day :3
Good video Todd Howard, liked the editing and the information was well presented. That little hotplate was super cool too.
Absolutely gorgeous work on this. Really taking the best form factor for a handheld and modernizing in all the best ways possible. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This looks so ergonomic!!!! amazing job
That is siiiiiick! I love horizontal handhelds so much, and this is just beautiful
I was at a swapmeet and saw someone with a couple of these on their table and I just had to learn more. This is AWESOME! I hope more projects like this come along. I am defiantly looking into making one of these for myself. Once again this is just amazing, and you should feel very proud of your work here.
I'm so excited that as my projects keep getting more complex and the skill required increases, I always have another project show up in the nick of time to challenge me further. My latest was a GBA rebuild with a laminated DSi screen and I'm still overwhelmed with how well it turned out.
Impressive job!
Thanks for share with us 😯
This was a friggin delight. I want to do this, but I gotta brush up on my soldering skills. My soldering journey has so far been 2 capacitors, and 1 mouse switch replacement lol. Also, LOVE that tiny little soldering plate, I've never seen one that small!
Thanks for a lovely 20 minutes!
Instant fan, instant subscribe!
Insanely cool project! Wow.
I have so much interest in these kinds of videos. I am now subscribed and looking forward to what projects are next! Keep making awesome stuff! ❤
Congrats, It’s an amazing project.
I was on the fence about the usefulness of this as I was watching you make it...but then I saw the finished product, front and back, and it's just beautiful. Noice.
Love the curved edge design. And love the ground-up video as a whole.
I just saw a shot video with this Frogboy and the shape made me fall in love with it straight away! As a noob to the world of modding in general, I'm sad that it is such an advance project to tackle. In any case, maybe I will do one one day when I am more proficient at modding :) Great job!
This is awesome! Definitely gonna be a project on my list.
I'm so glad people like you exist ❤
Fantastic idea and beautiful build. Nicely done 👍🤘
This is a masterpiece, I love it!
This is absolutely amazing!!! Cannot wait to order everything from you >,>
Amazing work! This looks suuper awesome and is something I'd love to build someday.
Omg Sooo cool! Can't wait to have a look at the PCB and learn about that USB-C charging
This is incredible... Much respect, my dude!
Great job. I'm working on my own handheld as well. I know the work involved. Gives me motivation to keep going.
Great wok!! - I love the SP's dome switch D-pad and buttons.
professionally made. well done
This has to be the coolest most practical and most elegant mod I have ever seen. I congratulate and thank you for sharing!
In your future updates please don't change the form (at least not much - if you have to) as it is perfect and froggish :-)
What you could change in my humble opinion is the volume wheel (put it on the side for example), add the IR as you mentioned and maybe have the option of ordering a back that protects the label/sticker on the cartridge.
I am anxious to see where this will go in the future!
That looks really cool!
Awesome stuff! I really like this design!
Excellent, clean work. Subbed, and I hope to see more videos like this!
Nice work my guy! Very clean. Gbc is my all time favorite handheld, Pokemon Crystal is my favorite gbc game. The colors they use in game, plus the Q5 is beautiful. Great work again. Keep on developing projects! I did this for a bit, now I work on triple A game in the gaming industry. Small projects like this out me on a path, I hope it does for you too!
Very cool project! 👏
Beautiful, my hat off to you sir!!
Hopefully you get a lot more subs, very nice build with great attention to detail
This is amazing if I had more experience in soldering I would definitely give it a try, super cool design!
The Froggo cloth totally got me
It just looks so nice
Lovely build. It’s fantastic you made it open source.
you have so few videos yet the quality is amazing
brother, you are an amazing person! what a beautiful work!
That is so neat and so beautiful. Clever boy
Bravo. I will certainly be building one of these eventually!
its perfect save for the volume wheel
Glad froggo is making content, I fucking love this project.
Freaking good work man. Congratz. I wish I had something like pcbway here in Brazil. Would be very nice if possible that you integrated a Bluetooth module for the headphones in a newer version of this mod, very nice feature to have.
Man this form factor is the best, I do say I wish there were more projects of new pcb designs like this one for the original dmg. I'd want to have a use for my old super gameboy cpu
That’s really cool I have been a big GBA fan but even thought I had a GBC when I was younger but this wants me to relive it.
It's so nice to see someone undertaking a project with such careful consideration in the design and components, and respect for the original hardware. I wince every time I see a destructive mod given a lot of attention online; this is the complete opposite!
ive never seen that hotplate soldering technique, looked like magic.
this C5 capacitor ... bugged me WAAAYYYYYY too much. great work dude !
The screen looks great
This is incredible, I love the original GBA so much I'm going to be an FGC in my life for sure.
Yes! I've been waiting for this video
Dude, fantastic video! I would absolutely love to build one soon :]
Amazing work man! Not really a fan of the volume placement but all in all this is just insane how well this came together, would be interesting to see what this turns into over time, when I tried to make a pi handheld I wasn't really capable of making PCB's so it came out like 3x this size lol, so I can appreciate and respect the final product lol
Looks fantastic!
Instant Subscribe I cant wait for more stuff Sir Froggo
Good work man. I think the smaller form factor allows a higher level of long play comfortability. Like the PowKiddy RGB30. At first glance they seem small and strangely shaped but the ergonomics are very effective. As far as the device as a whole and it's build quality I believe you've got something very special here. Keep up your work and experimentation. You're a blessing to the maker community.
This is such a great design
Reminds me of the RGB30 :D Amazing redesign!
the tiny hot plate thing you got is pretty boss, seen way to many ppl struggling with heat guns.
Beyond Awesome.
Damn, watching those components melt into place is so satisfying.
looks great!! subscribed :)
So many of these diy projects fit all their functions and leave any sort of design as the very last thought. Like anyone wants to haul around some ugly brick (lookin at you, PiGRRL).
I'm so glad to see that this isn't the case here. This is an amazing build and I really really want to try it. Best yet, it actually looks comfortable to hold and play.
Good design, with the exception of the button placement. It's like something you see on a DS Lite (A and B buttons).
Nice work I like it.
god this is gorgeous. congratulations and thank you so much for sharing this work with us!
Thing is so sick I definitely want to take a crack at it 🤯🔥
really entertaining video ngl bro
What a great build!
This is so awesome. I dont understand anything of the technical parts, it sounds like Magic to me, but this is really cool
damn, it's probably harder than it looks, but that solder paste and hot plate workflow looks so satisfying 😌.
also: awesome project!
