I disagree. It's like me going to the US and visiting 3 States..staying in Back Packers hostel and concluding on it. Malaysia has 13 States. And 2 of the States are in East Malaysia formerly known as North Borneo. They are called Sabah and Sarawak. 2 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur.
I have been to East Malaysia three times from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau. I never felt that I stuck out, played two wonderful round of golf in Tawau, went to an orangatang reserve in the jungle and traveled to the top of Mount Kotakinabalu . I fell very accepted by the Chinese, Phklippinos and Malaysia and especially by the Indonesians. I think people of European decent have a difficulty intermixing with people who are not used to to them. They tend to study the history of these people as if history started when European colonialists arrived. I heard this complaint all over Borneo even down to Tawau. It is a subtle form of primitive racism that is endemic to European and American culture that turns people off. I played golf on two different courses in Malaysia with a theHakka Chinese man and had a wonderful New Years Dinner With a family in Tawau. I stayed at the Marco Polo Hotel and hung out with both Philippinos and Indonesians, I had a great time all three trips. It really depends on how you present yourself.
What are the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia like? At about 5900 feet of elevation, they should give some relief from being too hot or too cold. Is it like an eternal Springtime climate? Is there decent health care available? Any towns or cities up there? I am possibly reconsidering Boquete Panama. Because I'm only about 40% fluent in Spanish and Malaysia being a former British colony is mostly English speaking. Communication with the locals would be an clear advantage. Do you have a video that highlights the towns and/or cities in the Cameron Highlands? If so, please provide a link. Thanks Dan and Qiang for all you do.
Just wanted to share...I must confess prior to seeing your videos I would never have considered Asia as a intermediate or long term stay. I have been more comfortable in Europe and Latin America (speaking English, Greek, and Spanish). Asia just seemed too "foreign" to me. Now, having viewed 8 or more of your videos, Asia appears exotic and very appealing. And, Malaysia continues to be first choice. Thank you, I am indebted. Theo
I appreciate your time spent in giving me this info. I have to under go several surgeries before I can walk again. So in the meantime your travel and info I will follow by next year I plan on following in your shoes. Losing my ability to walk in the last year has opened my eyes to many things having that ability is nothing to be taken for granted so I will take full advantage of it and keep going. The world is our home why am I sitting in one spot my whole life watching the world go by on television. This is not living my best life. But to see as much of creation as possible before I find that place to maybe settle that’s living. I love my homeland but all countries are Gods country your very blessed my friend. Ty looking forward to learning from you. I particularly love the ocean and dream of living near it possibly in Asia.
Majority of Borneo belongs to Indonesia (Kalimantan). The Malaysians more commonly refer to this part of the country as the East Malaysia or directly address the state names: Sarawak and Sabah, instead of “Borneo”

Not sure about retirement, but a month in KL and a few weeks in the other two along with Singapore. Was in Malacca last year and Penang the year before. Spent lots of hours admiring the architecture in Malaysia
I love all of SE Asia. I could just go in circles here all year long, from country to country. Thanks for commenting Daniel. Please subscribe if you would like to see us do this all over the world. :-) Best, Dan
We have a 4 bedroom 3 bath home in Seremban (3) and love it . Also In KL a 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment in KL. You are spot on on the 3 places to live. Since my wife works in KL we can get out of the city and be in Seremban. I really like all of your videos and you have such a gorgeous partner. Must catch up viewing your many videos. Thanks so much.
If you are keen in white water rafting, there is one in Gopeng, perak near Ipoh. The coaches are frm australia. For adventures Gopeng white rafting is the place.
@@VagabondAwake For sure Dan. I first went there to do a Motorola plant inspection in 1996 and on the second trip I met Poh Choo and thought I was in paradise. I could not believe the beauty and especially at the Kalana Resort in Seremban. Mexico has some beautiful area but hell no here in Tecate. Poh Choo's command of the English language just floored me. All her school teachers were from England. And Qiang is also a catch in my book. Are you aware that Thailand has a suicide epidemic? 1 person every 10 minutes. Covid is part of the problem. Thanks for keeping in touch.
You have misspelled Kuala Lumpur in headings - no ‘h’ Driving in KL can be a nightmare, so best to use the MRT public transport. It is far more congested than Penang and doesn’t have Penang’s beach resort feeling. Food is better in Penang, amongst the worlds best but cultural entertainment is worse. Because the Opposition has ruled Penang for decades, there has been minimal Federal Investment on public transport.
Maybe u wanna try visit ipoh. Its is on top 10 rank for retiree to settle down by lonely planet in 2016. And its the closest to cameron highlands and pulau pangkor. So u will have the best of island and hill resort. And also hot spring that are located in ipoh. U will amaze by the limestone formation in ipoh too. And to mention the food🤤
You two have great taste. The food takes a little longer to figure out in KL. And it costs a little more even when you do figure it out. I got your message by the way and will be responding soon. I just seem to keep putting fires out. Can't wait to hear your story Penny and JT. Best, Dan

I have been to Langkawi before. Lovely place. Maybe a bit small for living though? For me at least. Some people prefer smaller towns though. :-) I haven't been to Kuantan yet. Do you suggest it?
Have you been to East Malaysia ie. Sabah and Sarawak? They are the 2 biggest land region in Malaysia. Hardly promoted by the Ministry of Tourism. But maybe it's the fault of Regional Tourism Ministry for not promoting to the US. Mainly promoted to China, Hongkong, Taiwan, Korea , Japan and Australia. Chinese are buying up land in East Malaysia just as they do in many parts of the world. Foreigners can own land in Malaysia..fyi. Tourist hardly mention Johor Bahru too.
Too hot in Malaysia. I was very uncomfortable with the heat and travelled from Melaka to Penang. Also have to watch out for street food if you want to stay healthy.
Same here. Not Malaysia. After seeing the Batu caves, the twin towers, Port Dickson, KL Chinatown, I’m done. I can’t eat their food. Not fond of their spices. Thailand. Is better.

It doesn't hurt to share that. But read this and then compare it to Sabah: www.theglobaleconomy.com/rankings/kidnapping/
You've not mentioned any martial arts activities relative to specific locations. Have you seen anything in your travels that you can share?
Martial arts are worldwide now. Not all locations have all forms of arts. That will be your problem if you are looking for a specific discipline.
Dan, what are your thoughts on Kota kinabalu? Have you done a video on it?

Visitors cost and living vs. locals are different. Accomodations. Biggest cost. Where, how for 3 months
Yes, when you go long term and go for more local style housing you will get the best rates.

I like people watching. More people, more to watch. I grew up in a farm town, so the grass is greener in the city.
Oh man you need to learn to pronounce Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham correctly.
Thanks for the constructive criticism.
