It is wonderful to have this look into the beginnings of "our family". As Genki was running/climbing evading him, she reminded me of Gentaro in so many ways. Made me laugh though - Momotaro may have the size, physique, and strength but we definitely know who has the brains in the family! I adore Genki!
Loving these early-days videos of Genki and Momotaro. Genki is cautious and smart. She's making sure she's got her eyes on Momotaro at all times. Glad she has lots of vegetation to hide in, so she feels safe. I wish the family had this kind of dense foliage in their current enclosure.
Oh, Genki IS playing strategic hide-and-seek while Momo ricochets around. She’s so nimble and quick, and they are both positively gorgeous! Binge watching ahead-this is so much fun! Glad someone thought to film all this. Thank you, thank you, for sharing again.
Thank goodness Genki got Momo instead of Haoko! I watched him mating with Toto and Momoko, now that’s a BIG BOY! And uh he definitely knows what he’s doing😳

He is very aggressive.He bites her and chases her around or attacks her for no reason.I saw a video once when she had just had her baby(maybe baby was a year old) and he made her mate with him, which they usually dont do until the baby is weaned.He is not a good partner for her or anynody in my opinion.
@@bethanywilliams6043 he’s is Shabani’s brother I think. He definitely is the biggest gorilla I’ve ever seen and looks very intimidating. That’s sad that she was forced to mate again after baby. The video I saw of him mating with the older gorilla was aggressive and she was actually trying to get away from him. This was on Instagram too
Although this place is much smaller than what they have now, it looks nicer with a smaill cave, a pond, climbing plateaus and lots of green. I'm not an expert but what I've seen from other zoo's like the Apenheul in the Netherlands or Taipei Zoo in Taiwan, a pleasant natural environment (not all concrete and steel) contributes to the well being of the gorilla's and stimulates the development of the babies because there's more nature for them to explore. (It's the same as for us humans).
This is exactly what I was thinking. Their current enclosure is Barren…no wonder why they always have so many skin conditions and health issues. If it’s budget issues there’s no reason why they can’t raise money because I know I would donate.
Wonderful videos of Big Mo and Genki their first encounters love all the greenery I would love for them to have a larger area like this for the family. I have come to love this family over all the other gorilla families my prayers for this and good health. God Blessing for the keepers who care for them. We hate that they have be in captivity those who would cause harm and destroying their habitat. 🙏
This reminded me of Kintaro chasing pigeons, always just out of reach. Genki has the advantage of knowing every inch of territory and she uses it to her advantage. She is also really quick.

How different Gentaro is at Big Momos age 🤔Momo was very strong and seemed very grown up compared to Gentaro. Gentaro still seems very childish certainly NOT READY to have and protect a family in my opinion, I sure hope you keep Gentaro with his dad for a couple years more so Big Momo can teach him how to be a man.

I like that zoo better than I do the new one they built it's got a grassy bottom lots of trees lots of plants formed to eat and all kinds of trees to climb. Why couldn't they have made the new zoo the gorillas have been anyhow when they redid it why couldn't they've done it like that but the old one.
This is a nice set up and I like a lot of trees too but it would be hard to see them. The set up they have now still gives them plenty of things to climb on and there's still some trees but it's uncluttered for better viewing.
I kind of like the new one better. It's got more room for climbing and brachiation, it doesn't have those dangerous concrete steps, and it's probably way easier to keep clean. Of course, every time they try to plant more greenery, Gentaro rips it out, lol.

Momo needs an affectionate female like tyari and genki just needs someone to mate with and have nothing else to do with, like haoko.

No wonder Genki is hiding. She is not playing hard to get! This is completely normal gorilla behavior in protecting self. He is a complete male stranger to her. Wouldn't you be? Animals also suffer from PTSD as well from past trauma. Momotaro is definitely feeling intimidated by another presence. Like the day when he was transported to the zoo, I'm sure he has traumatic memories of that day. I just pray that there are TRUE animal psychologists involved in the coupling and integration procedures of these precious creatures. Hopefully they will move the family to a more luscious, more bountiful greenery, trees and open space like the Shabani gorilla family are blessed with.

Genki looked like she was playing hide and seek with Momotaro. Lol! Momotaro was looking at the chimpanzees next door like "stay over there if you know what's good for you."
Must have been so stressful for both of them. Poor Genki, being in a new place away from familiar faces.😢 At least she didn't have time to get homesick because she had to watch out!😰 It would have been better if there wasn't so much noise & activity going on at the time! Geinki wasn't having it and I'm so glad they got them out of this tiny enclosure it's just entirely too small for 2 gorillas it's too small for 1 I mean it looks nice it's just too small.

I just thought it seems kind of cruel given the problems Genki was having where she was just to throw her into the enclosure with Momo. Did she have her own inner space to sleep? And all said I am glad it did work out for them. But I bet she was stressed to no end during this intro time! She is so cute and cracks me up now!
Right! It was hard to watch Genki be abused especially with all her past trauma! At the end of the video I cried when I saw her hiding in the water. For her to feel that water was a safe place to hide especially when gorillas HATE water and drown easily shows how much danger she felt she was in. I am glad that eventually it worked out. To answer your question about sleeping arrangements, I did read in some of the notes that they did have different sleeping quarters in the beginning but I think once they started mating they stayed in the same sleeping area.
Young gorilas are very agressives. But zoos alway do the same I could see videos very cruels when zoos put young gorilas into a enclousure of a new troop.
Also looking at this video you wouldn't believe that Ginki is the one that choose him 👍 and his mother Momoko did not like Ginki at all . Ginki is smart alright she choose Momoko first son to mate with and gave her two grandson . Payback is a bit---. Lollol

I do wish these gorillas lived in a “much larger” sanctuary AND way more quieter during the day. It would be stressful cohabitating with so much noise. We wouldn’t like it so why wouldn’t they? PLEASE give these great creatures “much more” space and vegetation and less noise for them to be dealing with. In the wild, they obviously have the space (even though that is shrinking every year due to humans of course) and they live in a very quiet place, otherwise they would pick up and move to a much noisy habitat! YOU can do “much better” than this “tiny” patch of bushes and concrete habitat. I’m curious to see how the other large animals are living with their conditions. There are zoos and there are Zoos in this world and not all are alike. Sadly there are way more cramped enclosures than generous and well deserved enclosures. I really wish that when the zoo owners and staff are happy and quick to point out our so called “human relations” to these great animals, yet we keep them in small enclosures that no human family would tolerate. We can’t seem to have this human gorilla dichotomy more balanced and fair.
It was kinda cute until Genki dropped that giant, nasty, stinky turd!! Then she did it a second time, the exact same spot, but she sat in it and had sh&t rubbed into her fur!! But maybe their s&it is like perfume?? Gorillas have been known to eat their poop so maybe Genki was offering him a bite!
She was scared and trying to keep him AWAY from her! She was so terrified she was hiding iin the water at the end of the video.If you know anything about gorillas you know that they HATE water! Especially bodies of water cause they cannot swim.I felt bad for her.

I agree. I think their current enclosure seems too unnatural. Those in NL and Taiwan seem very nice and spacious.

They didn't choose each other. They were put togather by the breeding program at the Kyoto zoo.

They didn't want anything to do with each other. It was a terrible match. They were just locked up together and forced to mate.

I do wish these gorillas lived in a “much larger” sanctuary AND way more quieter during the day. It would be stressful cohabitating with so much noise. We wouldn’t like it so why wouldn’t they?
PLEASE give these great creatures “much more” space and vegetation and less noise for them to be dealing with. In the wild, they obviously have the space (even though that is shrinking every year due to humans of course) and they live in a very quiet place, otherwise they would pick up and move to a much noisy habitat!
YOU can do “much better” than this “tiny” patch of bushes and concrete habitat. I’m curious to see how the other large animals are living with their conditions. There are zoos and there are Zoos in this world and not all are alike. Sadly there are way more cramped enclosures than generous and well deserved enclosures.
I really wish that when the zoo owners and staff are happy and quick to point out our so called “human relations” to these great animals, yet we keep them in small enclosures that no human family would tolerate. We can’t seem to have this human gorilla dichotomy more balanced and fair.

It was kinda cute until Genki dropped that giant, nasty, stinky turd!! Then she did it a second time, the exact same spot, but she sat in it and had sh&t rubbed into her fur!! But maybe their s&it is like perfume?? Gorillas have been known to eat their poop so maybe Genki was offering him a bite!
She was scared and trying to keep him AWAY from her! She was so terrified she was hiding iin the water at the end of the video.If you know anything about gorillas you know that they HATE water! Especially bodies of water cause they cannot swim.I felt bad for her.
