    Oh my your lessons resonate with me so much. Guitar player here wanting to incorporate harp. You’re an outstanding teacher! I wont watch any other harmonica lessons on TH-cam. You’ve got what I want to learn. Thanks, my friend! I hope you’re still kickin ass! Keep posting

    Great to see you on U-tube. I took classes from you thru community services in the 1980s. I learned so much in your classes.

    What a great video! Simple, instructive. So easy to get caught up in WHICH notes to play and forget about HOW to play them.

    Re: playing with your mouth open
    Hey, Jon. I've been taking harmonica lessons even though I'm three years into playing the thing. My teacher says the same thing about lowering your jaw and opening your mouth on a tall, choral sounding "aw" to get a better tone. The way he describes the embouchre is to think how a southerner would say "oil" or somebody with a Brooklyn accent saying "tall". I'm aiming for a bright harmonica tone and he has been helping me out a lot.

      As the video says, I suggest using the k consonant to create an airstream right to your throat.

    I heard this advice on embouchure early on, but without much explanation on why I should do it this way nor any great demonstration, and because I have a small mouth and it wasn'tr all that comfortable, I slipped away from it. Now I'm watching this video ... argghhh, everything is clear as daylight. Just tried it out with the bends ... the -2' whole step bend almost comes down by itself with this embouchure. Thanks so much for taking the time. Great exercises too. I just bought your book Bluesify your Melody by the way - great stuff!!!

    Are you still in San Diego? I met you many years ago, about 1977, you had an advertisement in the local newspaper for harmonica lessons, I came to check out and met at your home. You just had your first little paperback book as I recall. I was a full-time player already at the time, even though quite young, I was in the local N. County band "Tall Cotton", we were the first electric band at the Belly-Up Tavern and played all over San Diego County. Back then as I recall it was basically myself and Kenny Schopmeyer that were the two full-time harp players in bands.....I had fund sitting in with him at the time but we were both busy in our own bands. Anyway, I moved away from the area in 1979 and later had a Swing Dance, Jazz, R&B, Blues band for 10 years up in Oregon, then 7 years in Austin. Recently returned to San Diego and was curious if you were still around. Great to see you are still going strong! .....we do have mutual friends in the harmonica world, such as Dennis Gruenling.

      I remember Ken Schopmeyer. What is your last name, Gabriel? That might help my poor old memory! Gruenling is great harp player.

      @@jamcamp06 last name has changed since then but you probably would not have known anyway. Most everybody knew the band "Tall Cotton" (it was a country honky tonk band and we were the first electric band to ever play at the Belly Up Tavern and helped get that place popular. Otherwise we played the normal clubs like Jose Murphy's, dicks at the beach, etc. I remember that at that time you knew who the band was. We played some harp in your living room, You shared that in terms of lessons I was not in need of them. Perhaps the only other thing that might help was I was pretty well deep into playing the Charlie McCoy style, We did a lot of high speed fiddle tunes and country jams along those lines. Either way nice to hear from you and see you out there doing well.

    John love your lessons but the volume could be bumped up a bit hard to hear some of the video even with my end maxed. Love the content though.

    I can't get my two draw to play ANY note, let alone a bad note. It's a Hohner Marine Band model. It's honestly so frustrating that I've basically given up.

    • @jamcamp06
      @jamcamp06  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video will solve that if you let it.

      @@jamcamp06 I can make it honk like a dying goose if I breathe too hard, but if I'm breathing softly, I'll get a note on the one draw, air on the two draw, and a note on the three draw. Literally no note on two draw, just air. The reed doesn't vibrate at all. I'll keep at it, but I give up after like ten minutes per day of just sucking air through the two hole.
