    I bought both the Bose 700 and the Sony XM4s and I found the exact opposite concerning sound clarity and quality. I play and write songs for the guitar, as well as perform songs. I can hear a FAR more exact and natural sound from the Bose than from the Sonys. The sound from the Bose 700s is as though you are there in person listening to the guitar and the vocals - it's that good. By comparison, the sound from the Sonys is filtered and muddied, the instruments are not separated as clearly and the mid-range is and high end is not nearly as clear as on the Bose. The bass on the Bose headphones is far more tight and clear.
    I think what most people hear from the Sony's is that causes them to think they are better than the Bose 700s is that the Sonys DO produce "more" sound. The sound from the Sonys is louder and the high, middle and low-end ranges produce more sound. But to do that, the Sony XM4s sacrifice the pristine quality of sound and they sound muddy in comparison to the Bose - really there is no comparison. The Bose produce a much higher quality of sound.
    Because I know EXACTLY what guitar and vocals should sound like in person, it is much easier for me to hear the difference. If I did not have this experience, then I would probably think that the Sonys sound better too - but they don't. The Bose approach audiophile quality but based on reviews, are not as good as open-end headphones.
    In my experience also, I did not find that the Sonys ANC was superior to the Bose. I would put them about equal and it depends on the type of noise that is being addressed.
    Both of these headphones are very good and I can see why a lot of people think the Sony are better, but after carefully listening to both of them side by side, the Bose are superior to the Sony in most aspects, including build quality.

    • @KevinCarstens
      @KevinCarstens 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't use them for phone calls if your environment is calm. All bluetooth headsets are a massive failure when it comes to voice quality. If you want a nice way to still use the headphone but add good voice quality when you have a meeting or longer calls, get an inline microphone. I use the V-Moda BoomPro and it sounds a lot better for my travelling setup. At home I use the Rode NT-USB for perfect voice quality, but that comes in at a price.

      Exactly lol, I have both WH1000XM4s and QC35ii's, in my own experience, Phone Call Quality & Overall Comfort overwhelmingly still goes to Bose whereas Noise Cancelling _slightly_ goes to Sony other than Sound, Functionality etc. What it comes down for me is the _all round daily use_ I need from Headphones and I'm finding I'm using my QC35ii's more than my new XM4's, if I was just using it for audio, then I go with the latter but am using my laptop and iphone at the same time. Am gonna swap between the 2 to keep testing but not impressed with Sony, actually am disappointed so far.

      Do you think that's worth it?

    • @angelsjoker8190
      @angelsjoker8190 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mlv5746 As the ANC in the Bose hasn't improved since the QC35, you can see in this video and other 700 vs XM4 comparisons that Sony is only slightly ahead, thus also is only slightly ahead of the QC35. So it depends a bit on where you use the ANC and whether the minor improvement is worth it. Sony took the lead with the XM3 concerning overall ANC and has additionally improved the midranges a bit in the XM4, so if you use them a lot where there are people talking, then it may make sense, if you use them mainly to suppress the humming noise in an airplane, train or car, then you won't have that much of a difference. Until the XM3, the main dealbreaker for me would have been that the Sonys only connected to one device at a time but apparently, Sony listened to the customers and added a two device connection feature. I also have the QC35 and thought about upgrading but for me, the ANC improvement is not enough to warrant spending so much money when my QC35 still look and work like on the first day (except for the cushioning that I had to replace once) even after using them for hours every day. If I hadn't the QC35, I'd probably go for the XM4 as at home, I have a good mic for the computer and outside, I rarely talk on the phone, so even though the 700 seem to be amazing in phone quality the other areas where the XM4 is better would be more important to me.
      I just realize, your post is 5 months old. Have you decided to upgrade¿ And if so, what has been your experience so far¿

    FIrst i would STRONGLY advise people to try them. Many airports have these on display (less the QC35ii).
    Having XM4, NC700, QC35II and having had the XM3 (which were sold) i can maybe give my thoughts here.
    Soundwise, for music the QC35II and NC700 are both superior to XM4/XM3. You say that the bass has more extension and i, politely, rephrase that to "the sony's are very bloomy", which is something that i was hoping to be fixed in this new iteration.
    I do understand why some prefer the Sony's sound, believe me i do, as my gf which is the one using the Sony's on her daily commute. Voice wise there's not competition for the Bose, according to my colleagues they are definitely the superior ones there. Now one might think "omg Bose fanboy" and quite the contrary.
    Although i prefer the Bose overall, they are lacking in several areas like imaging, features (focusing more on the XM4 at this point) and app reliability. The Bose 700 app is hit and miss (as u stated) and it's definitely bad as hell.
    The touch controls on the XM4 are SO MUCH BETTER than the XM3 but i prefer physical buttons myself. Also i live in a cold country and i hope they fixed the situation where the touch controls would freak out with very cold temperatures. This happened with the XM3 and there are reports of similar situations on other cold countries (Sony even had that info in their support forum last years after several complaints).
    Now one would assume that i prefer the NC700 but i don't, i actually use the QC35II, simply because they can do phone calls properly, they are more comfortable, to me, than both 700 and XM3/4 and they don't have the bloominess of the Sony's (seriously i can't hear it for more than 1 hour until it bothers me).
    Comfort i get pretty ok with everyone of them but the QC35ii do fit me better than the XM3/XM4 and 700. The later are awkward when they sit on my head, the clamping is badly distributed and gives me hot spots. Also because i changed pads on the QC35II these ones are fluffier and i don't sweat as much from my ears.
    In a smaller note, aesthetic-wise i love the NC700 but they, if u have the same head shape as mine, they may look very weird on you.. The headband protrudes sideways in a very awkward manner and, as well, they are not portable as the rest of the aforementioned headphones.
    ANC-wise i do prefer the 700 than the XM4. This was obvious during my last 4 hour plane flight to PT. During the flight i could hear less the airplane, which is what usually bothers me the most, although the voices were not as faded. This is a personal preference but i prefer like that and so did my gf.
    Overall the best one i would say is the MX4 because it does several things right and not much wrong, following by the QC35ii, if you don't mind it's "faded look" these are the best bang for the buck imo, since you can find them use for as low as 150€, which is like half of the XM4. One would assume, that i would prefer the 700 but, unfortunately, there are too many compromises with that model, which, hopefully, will be fixed in a 2nd version.
    TL; DR -
    Music - 700>QC35II>XM4/XM3 (i would say the majority would prefer the Sony's though, as my gf does)
    ANC - 700>xM4>QC35II>XM3
    Calls - 700>XM4/QC35II>>>XM3
    Aesthetic - 700 > XM4/XM3 >>>QC35II (it looks very outdated now)
    Comfort - QC35II>XM4 /XM3/>700
    Features - XM4>XM3>>>700>>>>QC35II
    Portability - XM4/XM3/QC35II>>>>>>>>>>>>>>700
    Bang for Buck (New or used) - QC35II >>XM3>XM4>>>700
    Hope that this helps someone. I would STRONGLY advise u to try all of them.

    Thanks for including call quality in your test. This is the most important function for me while working from home. Previously I had purchased the Sony XM3s for this and boy was that a mistake. Call quality was horrific. Every call or Webex meeting that I was on, someone complained that t hey couldn't hear me. My laptop speakers and microphone actually worked much better than the Sonys for calls and meetings, lol. Luckily I was able to return them. Based on this video and others that I've seen where the XM4's call quality was reviewed, I'm going with the Bose NC700 as a replacement. The XM4s seems to be a little better than the XM3 for call quality, but nowhere near on the level of the Bose. Thanks again for your review.

      @@senewell I just bought the bose yesterday and it came with the 1.31 firmware. Call quality was iffy and callers complained about me sounding robotic and in a cave. Updated to 1.82 firmware and issue was resolved. I have mine connected to both my computer and phone and they seamlessly go from one to other when phone rings - I am concerned how that will work when I am on a zoom call but will likely disconnect from the phone when I have online meetings to prevent switching. I also had an issue with the headphones only recognizing as audio on my phone and had to unpair it, reboot, reset the app and repair, which resolved the issue. But that is on the phone end. I don't have issues with the headphones on my pc regardless of whether the app is running. I did order the usb dongle which I hear lets you run features from your headphones and maybe will help with switching. If you still have the bose, you may want to consider updating the firmware and see if it helps - also I turned on wifi calling on my phone and it improved call quality too but that may be due to cellular network issues I have at my house.

    Sony’s Phone call quality has improved a lot Over the years , Though Bose still leads . But for ‘everything else ‘ there’s actually no rival to the Sony’s. We could acknowledge XM4s - The Best just got Better . Perfection in every Aspect ,,

    • @taha112498
      @taha112498 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      of course there are rivals. E.g. Momentum 3 has got clearly the best bass/sound for me, surface the best controls, bose the best design and mic... But sony is delivering the best overall performance youre right in that point
      If you compare the sonys call quality xm4 to the xm3 in noisy situations it hasnt improved a lot. Its definetly not acceptable I think

    • @mathewkortum977
      @mathewkortum977 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah, nah. It's clearly not 'perfection in every aspect' as the call quality is rubbish. In a time when voice calls and meetings are getting massively more important, this is a big downer.
      If we look at Noise cancelling, the leading group (Sony, Sennheiser, and Bose) are so close that you only notice a difference in these TH-cam videos showing one after the other. They are all doing an excellent job, and are mostly at the same level. Sony is, now, slightly ahead, but it's so minimal a lead it should be viewed as level.
      Sound quality, give me the Sennheiser Momentum 3's any day of the week. They are fast and impactful. Good quality and details. The Bass is impactful and detailed. The Sony's bass is less detailed, and tends to leak into the mids. It makes the music sound more bloated and muffled. The Sennheiser win it every time.
      For control and device connections, the Microsoft Surface headphones 2 take the prize. The dials to control volume and noise cancelling level, the touch controls, mute button, how well it takes and uses the EQ in the app, and the fact is READS OUT THE CONNECTED DEVICE NAME, how instantaneous the switch between devices is mean these headphones just KILL it.
      To be honest, I think the best headphone is the Sennheiser Momentum 3's, but the Sony is good and well rounded in most areas. Considering price though, my suggestion always goes to the Microsoft Surface Headphones 2. They are cheaper, but have almost as good noise cancelling, sound great, are very comfortable and the best controls and multi-point connection

    Noise cancelling during a call was truly impressive on the Bose, the clear winner for that use. General noise cancelling for the "noisy café" was a bit better with the XM4. But, I would really like to have heard the NC difference in a subway environment or an airplane or in a noisy truck. Noise cancelling is an important characteristic for making a final choice and more side-by-side comparisons in different environments, quicker perhaps, are really needed.

      Yes, what every person defines as "good" audio is very subjective. I can say categorically that the Bose 700s provide a far more clear reproduction of complex vocals and instruments whereas the Sony XM4s mids, treble and bass sounded all smashed together. You can hear the individual instruments and vocals on the Bose 700s much more clearly and their sound is accurate. The Sony's have a digital AI sound that is artificially enhanced.

    Biggest game changer for me is the mute-button on the Bose. Might seem like a gimmick but not having to grab my phone/laptop during long calls & video meetings is absolutely great.
    Look and feel is a bit better of the Bose IMO (a bit more premium as you mentioned). I agree the comfort of the Sony are a bit better with very long usage. Biggest annoyance in comfort is the warm ears with very warm weather. You get that with both headsets.

    I think Sony need to try making this better in software. The XM3 didnt have phone quality listed as a feature but the XM4 DOES, from the spec sheet.
    Clearer hands-free calling
    Conversation flows freely with easy, hands-free calling. Leave your phone where it is, just speak with a double tap. Thanks to Precise Voice Pickup Technology, which combines five built-in microphones with advanced audio signal processing, WH-1000XM4 delivers clearer voice quality to the other person on the phone.
    To me this is a documented feature that is not working correctly. And I would call that a bug that need to be fixed.

    • @aaronloudnwireless
      @aaronloudnwireless  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aaron is Loud and Wireless - do you think they can fix this in software? Technically they should have the processing power and the mic’s for it I would think. Nothing drive me more crazy that something on a spec sheet thats not working correctly. I mean sure form the XM3 its better but that was a very low bar to compare against. Considering they have seen the Bose NC 700.

    • @aaronloudnwireless

      @ZackSNetwork 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@benabrams4071 Its possible that it can get better with a software update. The two areas that Sony loses in is slightly worse noise cancelation and inferior voice calls. However I feel that voice calls never was a priority to Sony as it is to Bose. Bose seems more for workers at a desk that speak to customers or clients from their headphones. While Sony seems much more well versed in other aspects.

  • @ForeverMasterless
    @ForeverMasterless 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Tfw you own both but can't decide which you like more.
    My thoughts:
    Comfort:
    I feel like both headsets have a bias as far as head size. You mentioned the clamping pressure of the Bose, which I didn't feel at all, but I have a small head. For me they're perfect. The XM4's feel like they BARELY fit on my head even at the smallest headband setting. I wish they would go even smaller tbh. So I would say if you have an usually large head, definitely don't get the Bose, and if you have an unusually small head, definitely don't get the Sony. Another annoyance is the Sonys won't STAY at the smallest setting. One side tends to slip down, the mechanism for changing headbands size is loose and just not designed very well, it feels cheap. I wound up placing a piece of clear tape to keep them all the way in. I also found them to have more hotspots on my ears. However, after buying thicker third-party ear cushions for both headsets, I find them both to be about equal in comfort.
    Build quality:
    This I feel like is absolutely no contest whatsoever. The Bose feel far more premium. The full metal headband, the premium rubbery material on the inside of the headband, the satisfying af action of moving the earcups up and down. They are so, so premium feeling. The XM4s feel like a cheap, light, plastic children's toy in comparison.
    Sound:
    As much as I hate to say it, because I prefer the Bose for its look and build quality, the XM4s just straight up sound better. You can futz around with equalizers and get the bose close to the XM4s, but they never quite get there. That said, the Bose definitely don't sound BAD. If they were your first set of premium several hundred dollar headphones you'd still be blown away if you didn't have the XM4s to compare them to.
    ANC:
    In every environment I've tried them in, the Bose just has noticeably better ANC. The sony not only doesn't remove as much noise, but it sometimes introduces its own sort of subtle droning sound, which is a common thing that almost all ANC headphones have and its especially pronounced on the cheaper ones. But the bose just straight up doesn't have that droning sound at all, so they get the win.
    Companion App:
    The Sony app is leagues better than the Bose app, both in terms of features and in terms of basic functionality. The bose app doesn't "stay" connected to the headphones, so every time you open it up you have to hit connect and it usually takes a few seconds. Also the Bose don't handle being connected to two devices very well. It often gets "stuck" and won't play any audio on my phone unless I go into the app and manually disconnect it from my computer. I've never had ANY of these problems with the Sony.
    Hope this helps somebody!

    Have to say I was VERY impressed by the Bose's call ANC. It was notably better, shockingly so. I wonder if Sony are sacrificing that level of ANC quality, for its soundstage when playing audio. If not, it's clear they need to develop a new chip to compete. Maybe, the answer is having two independent chips in each phone. I've heard that mentioned as a possibility before the XM4 release.
    I hope the new buds on Sony's range feature the voice activated transparency mode. I would find that very useful.
    Wish Sony made its ear cups as luxurious and roomy as Bose do, or at least give user to the option to modify and customise to suit requirements. We need more of that with headphones.

Without the amplification the caller's voice wouldn't be heard over the background, which was/is a problem seen with previous generations of the Sony device. Oh, and the background noise reduction on the NC700, you can't tell me that's not impressive! The headphones are so comfortable and I haven’t had to charge the headphones yet. The sound quality is the best I’ve ever heard on a wireless headphone. I’ve made work related calls on the device and it works, that’s all that matters to me. And lastly, I may be in the minority, but I much prefer the XM4’s look than the Bose 700. Dang - great comparison as I keep going back and forth..the Bose mic "beam-forming" array is amazing. If I was ONLY going to use for phone calls than it's hands-down Bose 700 NC; but music quality and bass and overall battery is Sony XM1004...I'd get the Bose (since you can actually set the EQs on the app now) only if the battery life was better...still torn on the Sony's tho...

    thanks for the review and went XM4. extra features are useful and I like the more in depth EQ tuning and I found a good setting. Bose to me is obviously better for the call quality but I wouldn't use my headphones for calls unless I got called using them but I wouldn't care much for that usage. guess it depends on the person to make the decision but for more casual listening I chose Sony

    the weird thing is… sony doesn’t cancel noise out on calls. they let it pass through and call it a feature… confirmed it with sony rep.

    Add the $50 difference in price and the Sony’s are a no brainer in my view.

    Thank you very much for this very reasonable comparison between SONY WH-1000XM4 and Bose NCH 700. I ordered WH-1000XM4 and it will be delivered to me on 4th Sep 2020 in Japan. I have Bose NCH 700, too, but, I could not experience best call quality when I used it on the very noisy streets. (Sometimes, it did NOT cancel the background noises and my counterpart told me that he could hear my voice but he also told that the background noise also audible and was not cancelled well.) I expect very much on DSEE Extreme, which should upscale the sound when I use it with iPhone, whose bluetooth codec is AAC. Looking forward to watching your next video!

    Thanks for your honest and great review. I just buy a SONY wh-1000xm4. Same with your reviewing, before decide it, I compared it to Bose NC 700 and Sennheiser momentum 3. Just fyi, If you are searching for a balance wireless ANC phone, which is best sound quality, ANC performance, built quality and definitely resonable price, I highly recommended SONY wh-1000xm4. Despite the Microphone sound is quite good, not so cleary, but still ok.
    Nowdays, SONY has lowered the price as low as $350 from $400. While its competitor still as high as $450 or above. Other solution for the mic, you can buy aftermaket 3.5 mm audio cable with in-line microphone just for $20. You can save much.
    But if you use it just for listening music often, I think microphone is not the issue. Both nc 700 and momentum 3 are great ANC headphones also, but I find their price are too high. Each brand has their own pros and contras. If you decide to buy a high end ANC headphone with price around $400 - $500, best ANC performance, great sound quality and lasting longer, these 3 brands could be for your consideration.
    But to find which one is the best and suit for you, my suggestion is just believe you ears not others. For me, after use SONY for couple of days, I satisfy with it.

    I have used the Sony XB900N at work for about 1 year. I operate a very noisy machine. My collogues never complained about the phone sound quality. Then i "Upgraded" to Sony 1000XM4, surly way better noise cancelation, but now i have to turn of the machine to make a phone call, or my collogues cant understand me.!
    Maybe I messed up a setting in the software, or its not an upgrade but a downgrade in microphone quality.?

    IMO the sound of Bose is much better, more natural and balanced. The amount of bass on Sony puts a fatigue on ears after longer listening.

    Being retired I receive very few phone calls and really don’t care about voice quality. What I care about is first sound quality second noise canceling third comfort.

    Thanks for the great vids. Actually, I am trying to choose the headphones now, so I want to ask your opinion. The thing is that in my region, prices and availability are a bit different from yours, for example, XM3s and NC700 cost just less than $250, but XM4s is in pre-order phase at around $400. So I am now stuck in choice: grab XM3s or NC700 now or wait several weeks for the XM4s and pay double the price. How do you think are new features worth it?

      Really the 1000xm4 has very tempting new features to upgrade, but you can do it later.
      The 1000xm3 are excellent and you can use it for much longer.
      the new m4 will not increase in price. the price has always remained at 350 dollars in all versions, m2, m3 and of course also in these new m4.
      The pre-order issue is a psychological technique that they use in marketing to make buyers believe that if they do not order now, later the cost of headphones will rise, but it is not like that.

      @@maycaballero3745 Thanks for the comment. Yup, $350 is an official price before tax and it's equivalent to around $400 in my country (we have all prices after-tax) despite XM3s official is around $300 (but there are deals for $250 and less). So there is a fair amount of increase in price, unfortunately.
