I am surprised by the XM4 vs XM5 - sound so similar but sound yet so different. Air Pod Max is ahead in terms of airiness and clarity. Aaron is spot on with his ranking and thoughts. XM4 will be my go to next purchase since the price is way more attractive then the XM5 and the Air Pod Max.

@@blakelewis8547 I owned the XM5 and now im using the XM4, because the XM5 was to big for my head... After listening to both (and also the XM3), i have to say, if you like bass, then choosing the XM5 over the XM4 is a bad idea regardless of price. When i tried the XM5 after the XM3 i felt that the strong bass was missing. The sound is more clear, but if you like thumping bass, then you should not buy the XM5.
I think even though the XM4 is the previous version, it still has a place in the market, because most of the bluetooth headphone manufacturer are going for flat sound. The XM4 gives you the option to buy a bass heavy headphone, another alternative is the Momentum 3, but it lacks in ANC and comfort. (Momentum 4 has bass but only sub bass, not high bass like on the Sonys)

i personally have to give it to the NC700. The sound is more natural and more crystal clear. The sound is more comfortable to me. The bass on the Sony is a little high, the sound is like artificially boosted.

I keep going back and forth between my XM4s and XM5s and now I know why! Thanks for doing this comparison. I kind of treat my XM4s and XM5s as different “tools” and use them based on what I’m listening to and what I intend to do during the day. But yeah, if you’re wanting the XM4, they’re such a steal right now! But if you go for the XM5, you’re also getting great headphones. Same for any of the other headphones. It’s a win all around for all the headphones in this comparison video.

Listening on my AirpodMax and they did sound the best overall, surprisingly the XM4 sounded so much better than the XM5.
I tested xm5 and xm4 and at first glance xm4 looks much better
But when you listen to both for a long time, you will notice that the midrange sound of xm5 is better and the sound of the instrument and the singer is more distinct.
But in xm4 headphones, the sound of the singer and the instrument fades a little under the intensity of the bass and treble
Interesting. I’m an Air Pods Max and Sony XM3 user. XM3 will sound a little more weighty but XM4s which i got a chance to listen to, addressed some of the issues. My older Parrot Zik3 still can give some of these a run for their money except battery life
Airpods Max is comfortable to listen to, the xm5 however immediately sounded worst, xm4 sounds better again, bose sounded good in a way but maybe for some people

The advantage of either one of the Sony headphones is being able to use Sony's LDAC codex to get the best sound quality from them. So it seems fair to compare the difference with the Sony's using the better LDAC codex because as the old saying goes... "garbage in... garbage out" still applies and many users claim LDAC has "way more detail, richness, fuller audio and all other aspects of better music" (off TH-cam even) and may fill in the gap mentioned compared to the AirPod's detail that do not support LDAC. Increasing information will likely increase detail that Sony engineered to be present using LDAC without adding "information tricks" to get around what's missing.
In the end music data is information and going wireless via Bluetooth reduces it so to be fair the LDAC codex which is available to use and supported by Android 8 and above should be used for a true comparison. High resolution wireless consumer audio has been slow coming, but time has been favorable to LDAC where audio latency for video can be adjusted on good equipment so not an issue to worry about IMO if there is a better sounding solution.

I've finally got my XM5 (for 359.99 euros), and i'm loving it, so light, so comfortable, I'm using LDAC so I can get the best sound quality, and very important I can use the equalizer to my preference. I do have a pair of AirPods Max, but the trouble is that I live in Portugal, and here the temperatures can reach 109º Fahrenheit in the summer, I started to have a condensation problem on my AirPods Max, and with just a few minutes on my ears, finally after 2 months the condensation build on the drivers made it fail on the right cup, so I returned the AirPods Max, waiting for them to arrive from Apple repair service and as soon as they arrive I will sell them online. Apple please learn with other brands, going for stainless steel and aluminium is a wrong move, and that's why most of the brands go for plastic or composite materials. The Apple ones are very heavy and bulky, and like me, many people complaining about Apple AirMax, having condensation build up inside the cups and on the drivers too, making them fail over time, and thats because aluminium dissipates heat better, the difference in temperature creates condensation, and they are not water proof.

I completely agree with your list. I listened on Soundcore Q30's. The XM4's just sounded cleaner and clearer than the XM5's on everything (which really surprised me) while the Apple Max cans were way better than I thought they'd be. The Bose, well they might be open and if that is a flat response, then to my ears they just sounded tinny, too much treble and high end. The XM4's just seemed to my ear to be the sweet spot for my hearing. I'm looking to upgrade my cans soon, and was looking for reviews of the new Soundcore Q45's when I came across this video. I'm now thinking that with the price drop of the XM4's because of the XM5's, that might be the way I go as the increase in cost over the Soundcore Q45's isn't as big. The only fly in the ointment now is the new Sennheiser Momentum 4.

What’s with the steep rolloff on the XM5’s? It makes the headphones sound a little dark and murky. There’s also some kind of weird manipulation of the soundstage happening. The XM4’s sound more balanced and probably best for a wide range of music. The Apple Airpods would be a close second. The Bose sound a little flat but probably best for midrange spoken word or vocals. I don’t understand what Sony is doing with the XM5’s.
The difference is way noticeable with the second song. Can’t really say which ones I prefer as I believe that the fact I am listening through a pair of AirPod Max may influence my listening experience to its advantages

Thanks for the video. I am a fan of your channel. Personally, I'm not real thrilled with any headphones straight out of the box. That's why an app and a detailed EQ is paramount for me. After hours of tuning my headphones to MY personal taste the XM4's are definitely my favorite all around headphone, taking into account not only sound but my total experience with the headphones. I have one suggestion and that is that you use different genre's of music which are sonically and dynamically diverse to give a full spectrum of the sound we might be looking to achieve and which headphones we might use to achieve that sound.

The sound from the AirPods Max is richer and "warmer". The Bose is on the other extreme, "colder" and less detailed. The 2 Sony's are in the middle, very close to each other.
Thx for this comparison. Now I know which headphones I will buy. XM4 has the best sound quality for me. The worst has the xm5. The AirPods and the Bose are very clear and are also good quality but not so good balanced as the XM4. In my opinion the AirPods has more „focus“ on the right ear side, by track 2 and 3. That was not so nice. If I had to make a range: 1 XM4 - 2 Bose - 3 AirPod Max - 4 XM5
1. XM4s (EQ options unlimited to the user’s liking, more bass centered)
2. AirPods Max (Apple’s “ideal” sound quality makes them flat, yet spacious sound gives them immersion)
3. XM5s (EQ options unlimited, but more flat)

I never understand why people like bad sound? the xm4s are the worst in the ranking. it's the only ones that destroy voices and make medium instruments bassy. the airpods max is the only one in the ranking that deserves to be audiophile
@@delamain1559 as a audiophile i disagree they aren't necessarily flat sounding as we can see the frequency response graph. The XM4 doesn't sound bad at all, although they do sound bassy. I enjoyed the Bose that low frequency response at the sub bass was gorgeous and that's about it. Bad sound to you doesn't necessarily mean it has bad sound since that is a taste.

To me the AirPods Max sounded most natural and the rest sounded more processed but i am listening on AirPods Pro’s so that have something to do with it. Of course its all about personal taste so one persons meat is another persons poison. Good video too really enjoyed it 👍

I think if you like clarity and richer sound get the Airpod Max but for muffled and base sound get the sony and BOSE in between
Listening on my B&O H95 the Airpods Max have a slighty better soundstage and more detailed sound than the rest so it's #1, the XM4's has a more upper bass kick than the rest but can be EQ'd to sound better
so #2, the XM5's sounded bad with a scratchy sound 🤔 the Bose sounds cold and lifeless to me 🤮 The best value IMO is the XM4's which can be bought for $150.

XM5’s & Bose 700 sounds not only narrower than the other two (which are XM4’s & AirPods) but I also hear less instruments so I don’t feel as connected to the music. After a thorough listen AirPods Max are my new favourites! :)
The Bose 700 was great sounding for it's time but we have come a long way, XM5 and XM4 aren't really the best but there is more separation on the sounds, well, that is what I heard, but the real thing could be different.
I'm shocked how good XM4's are. I tried XM5's almost everyday for 30 days, but I ended up returning them and I got XM4's for an awesome price on Prime Day and I love them so much more. XM4's are my favorite at the moment.
I agreed with you and I think Sony could have made xm5 completely different range and name, just like what Bose did to NC700 previously, rather than making it a direct update to QC35.

I think there is a weird thing with your xm5's because if you look closer to the eq there is a big drop on the highest frequency, according to other test on youtube this big drop is not recurrent on any of the videos I watch. Even without LDAC this frequency is normally supported by this headset.
No measuring rigs are accurate at those high frequencies. So take those graphs as relative to each other and not on absolute terms.
Frankly the work is top and the intention very very commendable.
But the problem with this kind of test is that everyone's feelings will be different since we all listen with different earbuds and headphones, therefore with different sound signatures and equalizations.
And above all, 1 headphones can seem to us to be the best because they have the same sound signature as ours or because they are the same headphones and therefore have the same sound signature.
The only real way to know who really is the ′′best′′ is to listen with a neutral calibrated earphone.

C'est surtout d'écouter avec un écouteur qui n'est pas dans la liste, si possible audiophile, sinon pour être honnête j'ai entendu la différence entre airpods max et xm4 (préféré airpods max) même avec des earpods... Le son est mauvais, pas de basse, pas d'aigus, que des médiums sans détail, mais les airpods max avaient sonné comme si j'entendais juste ma musique sans passer sur un test audio, alors que les autres si. (Ça me le fait avec tous les casques sauf mon casque audiophile justement où j'entends par contre les limites du airpods max)

Well, I still think this test is a very useful one, but only if it is being used for the purpose that it was made for.
This kind of comparison will show the relative difference between each headphone and the others. It is not ment to define the sound characteristics like a frequency response graph measured on a standardized test equipment would do for example.
No matter the equipment used to listen to the comparison (so the headphones used by us, the viewers), if it is good enough to reproduce the signal as it was recorded in the video, the difference between the tested headphones will still be audible.
I own a pair of XM4s but I prefer the sound of Airpods Max, the sound is much more clear and balanced. Surprisingly, XM5s sound muffled to me, but in the end this is just personal opinion

The Sonys have the Equalizer configuration… you can change the sound of them. Whereas the Airpods Max you cant. So I guess you configurate the Sony to your musical taste… big advantage too

Xm5 is not the brighter in base setting (mass people asking for bass bass bass oriented them toward this imho) but they could be the most pleasable one for long term listening. It is like silk vs jean, sure one has more texture but to sleep I am taking silk everyday.
AirPod max clearly sounded the best, i wtached the video with the XM4 and forced LDAC Bluetooth encoding.
I don't know much about headphones and music, but a bit curious. Is it possible to change eq on xm5 so you can listen to a wide range of songs without making them sound different. At least to make them sound more "neutral" I guess.

What codec were you using? Are you using AAC on the xm5, if it is does it makes a different when you use ldac?
Xm4 were my favourite, but bass can get tiresome so would want Bose 700 too....depending on mood.

The xm4 sound noticeably better than the xm5 in terms of the vocal range. But In the background you hear a lot more on the xm5.

If sound quality is the main goal, have you checked out IEMs? They are of course wired so outside of the remit of this channel but even FiiO FH3s at 120 UKP/$ make all of these sound as if you have a pillow between the ear-cup and your ears.
I ended up giving my Xm4s to my wife and now use Moondrop Blessing 2: Dusk IEMs which are more or less the same price but sound better than pretty much anything under S500 and certainly anything wireless I have tried. Add a small DAC and you're in heaven.

I am so surprised by the XM5, honestly was expecting more, between the XM4 and the XM5 i have to go with the XM4 as being the better pair of headphones. It's more clear on the 4s compared to the 5s. Now comparing the AirPod max to the XM4, i would have to go with the Airpod max, only because my mind is stuck on them, i also believe if you've got the apple eco-system (which i do) the airpod max will be a better choice for you. If you use the apple max with say a Samsung device, you're really missing out on some of the main features that come with the airpod max, hence the price being 500. My overall opinion is buying the Airpod max. Great video!
Came across this vid now as yesterday I bought XM4 😊 and they are just awesome.
According to me XM4's are the Winner 🏆. Keeping Price, travel friendly, lite weight (AirPod Max biggest problem) and compact design, in mind. It is cheaper too thn all others in list and still stands at 2nd position after AirPos Max.

when you add in planar phones from Hifiman and those similar then the test will open up a can of worms e.g. clarity, openness and soundstage etc.
Overall good test. Next time try throwing in cheaper headphones from Soundcore Q30, Moondrop, etc. to shake up the comparison.

I recently bought a MOMENTUM 4 but I'm thinking that my iphone doesn't have enough power to push the phone
I'm thinking of replacing it with the WH-1000XM5, it seems like it needs less power to push. the impedance of MOMENTUM 4 is 60 ohm and it seems that the WH-1000XM5 drops to 40 ohm

I am actually looking for reviews for xm5. Went to a store and tested it myself. And yes similar to your review here vioces does sound clear but its so sharp that has tht harshness. Waant able to make adjustments though since i did not dl the app. Out of the bat thats my take. Aiming to get this mostly for voice calls but listening to muaic would be 2nd for me still of course i want it to sound good. I have no doubt that the amax will blow everyone out of the water but for voice calls its 👎🏼 for me. Plus its heavy and gets uncomfy for long period of time.

I prefer xm5. I do try xm5 in store with my custom EQ. Yeah it sounds better to me. I didn't buy it because I'm going back to work overseas and using a headset is not allowed. So for what I would spend for a product that I won't use on a daily basis.

Nice comparison, I would have to go with the AirPod Max and the XM4 to be the top two then xm5 putting the Bose last place although they all do have excellent quality in their own way but as far as my sound preferences go this is what I feel are best to worst. Although there is really no worst in this case 💯💯can’t go wrong with any of these as a selection.

I've owned all four and ended up selling the Bose and the AirPods Max and kept the Sonys. I'll probably end up selling the XM5 as well. I still prefer the XM4.
Own the Airpods Max now but i have owned the others at a point of time. My opinion of the sound ranks as follows (Best to worst) → Airpods Max → XM4 → NC700 → XM5
Price aside, based on sound quality alone. Airpods Max sound spacious with good clarity and bass. Tonality is great and natural, i love listening to it. XM4 is close behind, it sounds great really but does not sound as good compared to the Airpods, it sounds rather mushy or bloated. NC700 sounds decent but is a master of none. It sounds "OK". XM5 was the worst which i've owned. I was thoroughly disappointed with the update. It was a cosmetic overhaul rather than a technical one. The sound was boxed in, bloated and full of mid bass. Everything sounded like it was mashed together with little separation. I tried using the EQ but there's only so much an EQ can do.
IMO, Apple users should definitely give Airpods Max a go, if not the XM4 for Android/Apple users.

xm5/4, nc700: more narrow (bose is more narrow) though i can't judge the noise cancelling for these which i would have liked-
the xm5/4 are a bit muddy around the low-mids, though i hope the app EQ can fix that when i get a pair later this year
I bought mine second hand (used max 10 times) for 275€ you really don’t need to buy them from apple, there are tons of people selling brand new or barely used pairs

XM4 for my ears sounds clearer than XM5. guess im goin with XM4, thanks for the video
I think the air pod max is the best sounding, but it's double the price of the Sony Xm4's wich is by far the 2nd best. Big thanks for this video its made up my mind to get the XM4s as its around £200-220 right now. I'm disappointed with the XM5's and the Bose is definitely not for me.
