I bought the Sony today and compared it with my friend's Bose. Found Sony waay superior. From this video, I think the Sony was on flat sound mode or 'bright' mode? I'd go for 'Excited' mode which has more base, sounds much more fuller. This is the thing, because of Sony's highly customizable app, it can produce any sound that the Bose already has.

Listening at both using a DT 990 Pro i must say that i felt that the sound from the NC 700 was WAY better than the one from the XM4. It felt a lot more natural compared to the sound from the XM4 that felt a lot more artificial and cold despite its better spacing and clarity. The music from the XM4 felt a lot more distant and somehow smothered while the voice felt sharper BUT artifical and cold.

I already own Bose NC 700, they sound good a little on the darker side but I feel that is good for long listening sessions. But one really annoying thing is multi-point connectivity especially with WIndows 10 and a phone. There are sooooo many times that the connection to the phone is lost when taking calls via Zoom, Skype on my PC, and also there are frequent distortions with sound from coming from the other party and when I'm speaking. This is really annoying and Bose is aware of this issue, but even after months there is no firmware update to resolve this.

I own the bose. I am a musician and use them for just casual listening. The only thing I don't like about them is the compatibility and bluetooth connectivity. There are some hiccups every now and then. The software from bose is not that refined. I used my friend's xm3 and never found that problem in them. But as an audiophile let me tell you. Both bose and sony are shitty when it comes to sound. Sorry to break this to you 😂

I ended up buying Sony the moment they launched here in India on the first day, to be precise (today :) ). I do own beats studio wireless as well as bose wired pair. I fell for Bose over the years as initially, when I bought them, I was not very happy with them, but then I started noticing sounds on them, which I never heard on other headphones. Bose is not for bassheads for sure, though the bass is not bad. The reason I chose XM4 is that initially, with past experience, I was inclining on Bose for comfort, but then I noticed XM4's are lighter than 700's. I had then no reason to spend extra bucks for Bose. Ah, and to tell the truth, I am blown with XM4 quality, especially with ANC. I can't believe the superb quality of ANC. It's like you put it on, and you are in space - pin drop silence. If not for music, I will definitely wear these when I need to concentrate. You can't go wrong with either headphones though.

  • @rossheard9446
    @rossheard9446 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

And this is why I LOVE headphones in general. People keep speaking of sound as if it's mathematics. 2 plus 2 equals 4. It doesn't work that way. Sound is a salad bar. It's a taste preference. I have listened to $1500 headphones that have not sounded as good to me as a pair of $80 headphones I own. I own a lot of different headphones and the reason is I truly enjoy the differences in the sound. These two sound very different yet they are both on the high end for choices in the main market. There's nothing wrong with either set....this is about personal taste. The Sony's seem to hit the high's well and the sound is very crisp whereas the Bose has great mids and more neutral. Truth for me....I like em both depending on what I"m listening too. If you're into it, grab every headphone you have and sit down and listen to each with your favorite songs, you'll be surprised to find that maybe different cans will play different songs better than another to your ears. Fun to me anyway. Cheers all.

The Bose were much clearer and cleaner in their sound. I actually bought both of these headphones and spent a few days listening to them. The XM4s just don't separate out the instruments as well. The XM4s produce "more" sound, but at the cost of it being muddy sound. Even the bass is much more clear on Bose. Xm4s produced more bass on the second song, but it was not clean bass. The Bose 700s are just superior, no matter what type of music you listen to. In the second song the vocals and the instruments are "mushed together" on the XM4s. They are also superior in build quality, the Sony are just "plastic" everywhere and feel cheap. The Bose have a stainless steel head band and even the ear cups seem far more solid.

I recommend that all audio reviewers get a pair of flat audio sources to use as a reference and to acclimate their ears too BEFORE reviewing headphones or speakers. The audience needs to know that the opinion you give is not...an opinion. For example, I got the QC35 ii because I play drums at church, I make custom IEMs, custom speakers and do acoustic consulting. Yes, the 35 iis resonant stability falls apart at louder volumes but I also know that I did not get them for that. I have my custom IEMs and flat custom studio monitors as well. My control to make sure both my customs are accurate are a DSP, a pair of Adam A6 and pair of Polk LSi9s.
All that is not necessary of course. A pair of 35iis are gonna be fine. I will be switching to the 700s again soon simply because it is more functional for me. It helps that, except for the inaudible range of sub bass, the frequency signature is identical to the 35iis....ish. close enough lol.
Thanks again for the hard work brother.

This doesn't really give me anything, it's recorded through a mic and then I listen to it through my headphones. I can hear the relative difference, but that doesn't say much.
But sure, the first song sounded infinitely better on the Bose, XM4 are incredibly V-shaped with no midrange. The other 2 songs were maybe a bit more fun on the XM4 because of the more pronounced highs.
I do own XM3, which apparently sound quite similar to XM4 and I can't say that they sound good. I mean, I didn't buy them for the sound quality, but the praise they get is a little confusing to me. One thing is that they are closed-back, so they lack air, but that's understandable. I just don't like the tuning, there's a lot of midbass that's overpowering the sub-bass and lower mids. The overall signature just sounds wrong. And the 5 band EQ is... eh. You can't do much with it. Every time I switch to them from my Hifiman HE-400i I have to get used to the more unnatural sound. I don't know, maybe I'm biased.

Honestly guys I have right now the xm4 and the 700 bought the 2 for test, it's pretty hard to decide wish one to keep; for me comfort wise its way better on 700s, Sony are bigger ugly, the cups touch on my ears and get hot too, NC on the Sony are better to block sound but at the same time is not natural and mess with the pressure wish is pretty uncomfortable for me , sound quality on bose at least for me are more natural and way less volume; sony sound for me it's likes pictures on a galaxy phone full of filters; the app for bose its garbage compared to Sony's but at the same times turning off and on on bose its way more easy and practical, speake to chat it's still garbage and some features are pretty useless at least for me. I have till September 5 to decide 🙄

@Sayem AK Go with Sony. If it's bose vs Sony. I haven't listened other two. I have used Bose sound link 2 and Sony wh-1000xm4. Xm4 is next level compared to sound link in terms of sound quality. I don't know how good are bose 700.

@Sayem AK I know. Take it for what it is. I also want to buy a headphone, but I don't wanna go out trying headphones during this times. So I am just order the Sonys online and be happy with what I got.

The very first transition from Bose to Sony and immediately sound feels like going through a pillow. It sounds muted and artificial. Vocal moves away and builds in to a solid wall of other sounds. Like You are looking a piece of glass, then sand it with a sandpaper and try to look through it again.
I don’t own any of this headphones and seems like not planning to. Will give it one more try at the electronic store.

So the XM4s were using AAC during your test? If so, I wonder how much better they will sound when using LDAC. I've only tried the XM4s when paired to an Xperia in a store (somehow I managed to forget to pair it to my own iPhone while there for comparison T^T), and they sound absolutely clear and bright when on LDAC!

We all appreciated the time and effort you put in to be able to make the video. But, the type of music is not the best to evaluate the headphones. The sound of a full orchestra will be very helpful to evaluate the separation of instruments, the sound stage, and how natural do the instruments sound.

Great Review.. I own Bose NC 700 and they sound good..only issue I feel is treble in few songs seems a bit harsh particularly if lot of Instruments are going on in background. On this video, I liked NC 700 over XM4 overall.. Can you also do a comparison with Momentum3? I saw your earlier video of comparison of XM4 and M3.. How about all 3 together?

Listening to this using my xm4, I still prefer Sony since it has fuller sound to music instruments and bass, however as for the vocals I give it to bose but if you adjust the eq settings of the Sonys to have fuller vocals you can make it sound closer to the bose.

Bose makes everything sound good somewhere in the middle and mashed together the rest. the sony's will make it sound like its all over the place seperated. But because the sony's is all over the place its a lot harder to capture the sound of the sony's with a microphone. I own both. bose for work cause the mics on the sony's are better than xm3 but still trash. the xm4 for my own enjoyment.
side notes: the app of the bose needs major work... bose's ear cushions are WAY easier to change and buy.

This almost seems like iOS vs Android, Bose being iOS and Sony being Android.
    Bose sounds better, but also.....sterile.
The XM4s sound actually worse, but the raw sound seems like a wild horse: You need to tame it for it to be any good. With an EQ, I'm pretty sure that tailored to my taste, the XM4s will sound better.

Boss sounds heavier and like surround sound, where as Sony felt like kind of flat and crisp. Agree with Milo D'Souza sounds like with Sony listening from neighbors house. Thanks when I tried them the other day couldn't listen to the same song as Sonys music player was broken in the store. So I listen the song from my phone with Sony. And I had the same feeling being Bose 700 bit heavier which I loved. But was not quite Sue as I was listening to 2 different songs from 2 different outputs. Thanks for this review now I know definitely for me Bose 700 is a go 👍
