I love it when gamedevs from the 90s come and help the new generation out with their expierence. I've also listened to many podcasts of retro gamedevs. Learning from the limitations devs had back then is really aspiring

Incredible interview! Scott Miller is a living legend. I grew up playing those shareware games; he's a rare combination of an incredible developer, designer, and business mind. Thanks so much for continually bringing us informative, educational, and entertaining content to cultivate healthy habits, advance our skills, and bring smiles to our faces! I can't be the only one who squealed at all those show-and-tell items. And thanks to Scott for delivering the edgiest, coolest games of my youth.

Nice interview, Thomas! A little feedback on the editing for whoever is doing it: its a bit too much imo, like at 3:41 where every couple words has a sound effect and text popping up on the screen for half a second. There are other instances like this where the sound and visual effects are a bit over the top and unnecessary. Hope this is useful.

Excellent interview and I'd love to see more. I grew up during those early years. I have a Max Payne mouse pad a friend gave me but never played the game. I think he's a very pragmatic person - he's in indie games (also) because there is a market for it. Honestly I didn't even know Apogee was still around but I just recently started spending more time "in the industry". More interviews like this would be great.

"We just did it because it was cool". Just blew my mind. As an indie myself the financial worries are real an a lot of thoughts go into "what to build", in order to make money. But to be fair this was also another time back then. There was less competition and just beeing able to create such a product was already a seperation criteria.

Expanding on the conversation around 1:01:00 - people new to game development (any skill) must take on appropriately sized projects. You have a better chance at success when you take small iterative steps towards whatever "success" is to you.

How to actually be successful in game dev today: start back when demand for games was high and supply was low (this was the 90s for PC, mid 2000s for casual portals, and later 2000s when Steam was open to indies), and the barrier to entry was high. Establish a foothold as a brand and build wealth.
Once the market becomes saturated and highly competitive stop making games yourself and pivot to publishing games other people make; this minimizes your own risk and allows you to cherry-pick only exceptionally good games that have a chance to be successful.
The honest truth is that most people teaching the "secrets of success" in this industry were just first or early to market back when there was a mismatch between game demand and game supply. Their games are not that good; competent, but nothing mind blowing. Now you believe they have the super secret formula, but they don't. They were just creating competent content back when there was little to no competition.
Wow, amazing how we're pivoting to selling courses as a primary source of income. Imagine that. This is the same pattern I see in literally every mature earn-money-online industry (fba, ebay, retail arbitrage, crypto, game development, and much much more).
If you want to be successful today you need to be exceptionally talented AND lucky. There is no formula you can recreate as an average developer that will work. That's nonsense.

    • @PharmacyBrain

@@FutureChaosTV No. Flappy Bird is an example of an extremely simple game that when viral for no discernable reason. This is what you call dumb luck. Dumb luck is not a business plan. Neither is buying Powerball tickets.

    • @turbo8628
      @turbo8628 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@PharmacyBrain i agree with everything you said. I feel like a lot of youtubers and their watchers are too interested in financial success.
Yeah, making money from it would be great, but there are easier ways to make money, and if you are only making games and assets etc for monetary gains then that will eat into the fun of it.
I will be buying a pc soon so i can develop my own games, and i am fully expecting to "fail". My sucess will be based on the enjoyment i get from creating and playing my own game. It is a hobby, and i think a lot of indie developers fail to recognise this! There are very few developers who actually become successful, and if they had that formula for success then they wouldn't be giving it away for free.

I would approach this publisher (if i made a ecent game), not because of their success or because they are recognised, but because of the pure nerdery at the end where he showed the games he made. No replacement for passion, it can be way more important than talent, espeially in a subjective medium like video game development.

I have a tendency to drop a game im working on once I find similar idea already made, no point in trying even because even for free its going to be played less. And Im enjoying it less, have less motivation once Ive seen someone already did X idea I just had or already work on.

    • @FutureChaosTV

Then you can stop coding games forever as any idea has already been done.
      (Same as with all arts)
