Oh super accurate. As a white man, I haven't had to pay for anything in years. I think the last time was at a coffee shop. Would've been free there too, but there was a black couple at one of the tables.
One of the greatest segments in SNL history. I watched this when it aired live with my older sister. 40+ years later we still once in awhile say to each other, "Go ahead, take it. There's no one around." Eddie Murphy on SNL, before he got really famous, was amazing. Buckwheat, Gumby, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood, Velvet Jones. So many great bits.
Eddie may have done a reverse scenario based on the nonfiction book, Black Like Me, first published in 1961 by journalist John Howard Griffin recounting his journey in the Deep South of the United States, at a time when African-Americans lived under racial segregation. Griffin was a native of Mansfield, Texas, who had his skin temporarily darkened to pass as a black man. Black Like Me, became a bestseller and a powerful indictment of racial injustice. It was made into a movie in 1964 starring James Whitmore. A generation later, Robert Bonazzi published a biographical book about Griffin, these events, and his life: Man in the Mirror: John Howard Griffin and the Story of Black Like Me (1997). As a Canadian who had attended college prep school in the states, I had read Black Like Me after it came out and later saw the movie. It was a revelation. Never saw the clever SNL skit though.
I'd say make that definite: a tribute to "Black Like Me", a book I read in 1999 and found a little disappointing for the level of racism expected. I did all my education in Canada.
This was one of my favorite Eddie Murphy performances on SNL. When you get right down to it, satire and exaggeration produces some of the greatest comedy.
Did you see the one he hosted Christmas 2019? If not look it up, think most of it is on youtube. He has not lost a step. He does some really good stand up and movies but to me he best work was on SNL. He is more himself on SNL I think. Just a guy you can't help but to like.
@StanSwan yes I did see that, he revived all the old characters that he was famous for back in the day. It was great to see him on SNL again. He's such a talented comedian and actor. A lot of younger people think of Shrek or Dr Doolittle when Eddie's name comes up but he was such a huge star during the 80's and 90's, before any of that came out.

I told them about "the talk" that black parents have with their kids sometimes, about how to behave around the police. They were STUNNED! They almost didn't believe me.
This is one of my favorite SNL skits. I also love how he said the mustache was a little Harry Reems-ish. HR was a famous porn star of the 1970's (he was the male lead in perhaps the most famous porn ever made, "Deep Throat" which made over $600 million dollars). HR famously had a thick mustache.
You mention this not looking or feeling like an SNL skit. They used to have such "movies" quite often. I can remember a special where all they showed was their greatest ones. One I remember laughing at quite a lot was James Belushi playing an high school chess team coach where he would act similarly to a football coach.
Dynasty was a prime time soap opera in the 80s. Filled with beautiful rich people double crossing each other every week. iirc, the main character’s name was Alexis. (I never watched this show myself. But I did watch a similar one, named Falcon Crest.)
This aired when I was in HS in the ‘80s, and it was amazing. There weren’t as many black comedians, and SNL was huge cuz limited cable and no internet, right? Eddie’s work on SNL reached all of us teens living in small towns & suburbs that were essentially all white. It was eye-opening and just so damn funny. It is an accurate parody in a lot of ways. I literally met 3 black people in my life up to college, and the white people i grew up around were very nervous about black people. We were also raised by parents who were born in the ‘20s-‘50s, and their attitudes toward race were prehistoric! Not everyone, but the majority. Eddie stole our hearts, and a lot of our parents hated it. Mine sure did! You should watch any of his SNL stuff - so good. And he was only 19-20 at the time!
Eddie Murphy probably never did “regular” comedy , his style was always cutting edge and in your face, being funny at the same time. And he’s kinda still like that today if you think about it. But in the 80’s it was really cool to see him take what Richard Pryor started in the 70’s and make it even cooler.
The best I have EVER seen are the barbershop scenes in "Coming to America" where he plays the old Jewish guy!!!!!! I was raised a Jew in New York and the realism is astounding!!!!!!
Eddie Murphy has played being Caucasian at different times. In the movie "Coming to America" he played the main character (the African Prince) as well as a Jewish man hanging out in the barbershop (and a couple of other characters in that movie too).😊
We used to watch Dynasty when I was growing up. There’s a reason it was a big hit show. Starting in Season 2, and going for several seasons, it’s terrific entertainment.

Eddie is great but as a white guy when the last black person leaves the room some idiot says something racist. One St. Patrick's day a couple mixed race, black man and white lady came in a bar I was where everyone was white. I saw them come in and could tell some people were giving them funny looks. His wife laughed and we had a few drinks and a great time. I went to school with a beautiful girl who was half French and half black. My mother hated her and his father hated me. We were 17 and it was too much to deal with. Racism to me is just proof of ignorance and fear. Hope for a day we love everyone for who they are. Like the John Lennon song Imagine. Just say it (white privilege) it's real and it's not right. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and equally but unfortunately here we are 39 years later and things have not improved as much as they should have in my opinion. That was so cutting edge for 1984. Eddie Murphy is a once in a lifetime talent.
Hey Eddie, that is cultural appropriations, welcome to the club, I’m white too.no,not the cultural appropriations club. I would get cancelled for that. You see, some people think minorities can’t be racist because they don’t have the power. By this reasoning, if the leader of the clan moves to Japan, he is no longer racist, he is a minority. Btw, everyone feel free to wear white face, who cares. If it bothers you, first find out why they did it. Most people are not overtly racist.
Back before they installed all these cameras, that's exactly how it was......jk You need to check out Raw and Delirious. Those are his 2 standups. They wouldn't fly today but hilarious.
This is how humor used to be. People weren’t offended, it was just funny. We all got along WAAAAAAAAAAY better than today it seems.

i’m never sure if i should suggest this but there is a classic chevy chase/richard pryor SNL skit that will drop your jaw for a week. its funny but harsh. a very enunciated n-word. i can’t believe they got away with that. it was in 1975. you have been warned.
It's hard to believe that this is a 40 year old sketch
Top dog on SNL.
Yes, Eddir Murphy is actually Irish....but they keep that under wraps so shhhh...

What candy are you eating?
Back before they installed all these cameras, that's exactly how it was......jk You need to check out Raw and Delirious. Those are his 2 standups. They wouldn't fly today but hilarious.
Oh yes, Eddie Murphy Raw was awesome stand up.
I think Charlie was in end
