      I just wanna preface by saying that I'm also doing a Gen 3 living dex, and I wanted to share a bunch of advice with you:
      1. Colosseum has a really easy bug where you can essentially reuse the same pokeballs infinitely, and you might wanna exploit tf out of it to complete that game. Pretty much all you have to do is, with at least two separate types of PokeBalls in your inventory, use the PokeBall you want with the first Pokemon, and then swap it's position in the bag with the second pokemon and do literally anything else.
      2. You don't need all 7 games to get a Gen 3 dex, you only need Emerald, Colosseum, XD, and LeafGreen (not FireRed, because for some weird reason, there's no other legit way to get the Slowpoke line).
      3. Pokemon Box can allow you to easily "trade" massive amounts of Pokemon simultaneously between the GBA games, as well as act as a single hub for organizing all of your mons. You still have to painstakingly do 6 by 6 trades if you wanna get the mons out of the spinoffs however.
      4. Take advantage of Goppier's recent reverse engineering of the gen 3 event cartridges to get all of the event items, now including Wishmaker Jirachi and SAA Celebi, completely bypassing the need for the colosseum bonus discs as well as Ruby or Sapphire to claim the US Jirachi. Although if you want to use this approach, you need a GBA flashcart and two GBA Wireless Adapters (th-cam.com/video/UZpdaHS9l2g/w-d-xo.html) (the link for the distro ROMs for Jirachi and Celebi can be found in Goppier's first community post)

    Thank you so much for talking about the sentiment of "living in the wrong side of the world" in regards to Pokemon. Just reading about all the missing content, like the old man's house in Mossdeep, or the e-Reader berries, as well as the Old Sea Map, made me feel bad for something I had no control over, just like you mentioned. And it's important to share that sentiment with most people, who probably never understood how huge of a problem splintering Gen 3 was when it first came out.

      I'm from India and Nintendo had never sold consoles in India. So I emulate all the Pokemon games as close to the original experience as possible. (No emulator perks or speed-ups). Fortunately, if your consider it legit, you can connect all the games upto gen 5 on your phone alone! (Except the jump from gen 2 to 3 of course). But I've played all the games upto gen 5 as legitimately as possible. So if you are also from the "wrong side of the world", you can find plenty of extensive guides online.

    • @Lyra
      @Lyra  ปีที่แล้ว +49

      I am glad I was able to explain how you felt. The fact that before you even put the game in the console, you know you won't be allowed to access the content and feel like a persona non grata sours the experience in a way that is difficult to explain.
      And it sucks, because the games themselves are fantastic!

    Something often overlooked is that, midway through the generation, there was a massive shakeup in the way the series was ran in the West. Notably, The Pokemon Company took advantage of the lull in the series to essentially consolidate and centralize their control over things.
    Wizards of the Coast lost control of the Trading Card Game to them after Skyridge(leading to Jamboree being cancelled mid production), merch was brought in house and taken away from other companies like Kellogg or BBs, and the anime was taken away from 4kids and had the entire original voice cast fired suddenly after Season 6. This was very controversial at the time, and rightly so(It lead to a massive disconnect in the cards, hurt merch sales for a bit, and the original voice cast in English got screwed over), but it probably made things smoother down the line.

      It sucked for someone like me, especially just being young. Grew up in Wales and me and my friend adored Pokemon to a point that looking back at it, my autism diagnosis was not surprising.
      However, being in Wales, being kids and just not being particularly wealthy, catching ALL the Pokemon was impossible for us. We tried, but we missed events, we didn’t even know about things like the mythical Pokemon you could get in game at the Pokecenter and as more games came out, it was harder and harder to keep up. (Especially since more spinoffs were needed) Furthest I ever got was Pokemon Yellow, only game I finished the Pokedex because it was thankfully just Yellow to worry about.

      Well most events are available through certain DNS servers that you can connect your DSI/3DS which will allow you to obtain the Pokemon/event item.
      It is legal? Yeah, and who cares? Nintendo was the one who shut down the servers, people just found ways to make their own. The DS has been discontinued for several years. Nobody's gonna break down your door because you got an event Pokemon lol.

    The real reason for the lack of compatibility between gernations 2 and 3, at lest partially, was actually down the new GBA Link cable being wired differently than the Game Boy one. A Game Boy Advance in GBA mode couldn't communicate with a Game Boy Color or GBA in GBC mode nor the GameCube via the GC to GBA cable with a Game Boy Color cartridge inserted. Also getting Ho-oh in Colosseum Gives you access to nearly all the extra Pokemon added into emerald's postgame anyways.

    Speaking as someone who started with Pokemon Yellow and then went on to play every game up to Black/White 2, let me say this: I did not enjoy any game more than I did Pokemon Emerald. Sinnoh was fun, Unova wowed kid me with 3D stuff, Kanto gave me the original experience that led me to everything else and Johto excited me even further, but something about Hoenn clicks like no other gen does.
    I didn't care that there were some mons locked behind crazy requirements and other games - I was too busy exploring the world and collecting all the new gen 3 mons that I could get my hands on. If someone else got one of those crazy hard mons to get, that was UNIQUE for them as a kid - not something expected at all.
    Honestly, the idea of feeling forced into buying 7 games and 2 consoles just to fulfill some arbitrary goal feels so alien to how kid me viewed Pokemon I don't even know how to respond. I never visited any events, never bought any of the side games, and Emerald was one of the best Pokemon experiences I've ever had. The double battles, natures, the extensive postgame with the Battle Frontier and grinding to get highly trained versions of my favorite mons to tear down the Frontier Brains - so much more fun than anything Gen 1 or 2 offered to me.
    I don't care if catching every single mon in Emerald is ridiculous, and maybe you shouldn't base your entire enjoyment of a game off such a small part of the actual game. It might be a healthier way of viewing the region in general.
    Now I don't deny that what game freak/ the pokemon company is attempting to do is scummy, releasing 2-3 different versions of the same game and then locking goodies behind entire other games to try to bait kids into playing them, but in my opinion they failed to convey this to most kids.
    They failed in general to attract me or anyone I knew to buy all their other stuff for the sole purpose of getting a few more mons in the main game. They didn't make their tie-ins between games strong enough to force this sort of relationship you're describing, and I'm glad they didn't because that would be a major pain in the ass. GameFreak/The Pokemon Company are scummy af (just look at what they did to the latest games), but that doesn't mean they succeeded at forcing this cinematic universe on consumers.

    • @Lyra

      The issue I had as a kid was not necessarily having to buy all the games and consoles, but knowing before I even started playing that I would be missing SOMETHING. In the grand scheme of things, that something wasn't that big a deal indeed, but it tempered and soured my excitement. Why buy an incomplete game when I know of a lot of complete ones out of the box?
      Having started Emerald not too long ago, I absolutely agree with you: Emerald is fantastic! I cannot wait to spend hours playing it through and through, exploring the world and seeing all the game has to offer! I am having such a blast so far :'D

    Ever since watching Tama Hero's videos on gen 3 it's like I know something about a key generation of the franchise that many don't, because she had stuff in those videos that I didn't see anywhere else before and clearly almost no one knows about that or people wouldn't be talking about aspects of gen 3 or the remakes in general the way they do. I can't recommend them enough, her videos have incredible stuff that explain a lot of stuff of how gen 3 was made and it changes your perspective entirely about it and why Pokémon made the changes it made over the years and into the DS era. It's extremely interesting. The fact that they made it mandatory to complete the game in the Kanto remakes to trade away mons to other games to complete the Hoenn dex just to circumvent the problem of people renting games for a weekend and completing their dexes that way without buying a cartridge, worsening everyone's experience with the game just so they wouldn't lose money because of rentals is so...

    • @zjzr08
      @zjzr08 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      My issue with Tama's video is that it's conjecture, and while could still be true as highlighted with how rentals are IMO bizzarely banned in Japan, in another angle could be seen as a way to preserve the original feel somewhat of RBY, but still having access to the rest of Gen 3 content as post-game.

    • @Nyzer_
      @Nyzer_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zjzr08 I'd definitely have to agree that that idea doesn't make sense. Game Freak always used the idea of needing badges to make high level Pokemon obey you, so it really just seems like preserving the original feel of the games as well as another factor to prevent the player from getting non-Dex mons and trading with Ruby and Sapphire to be able to blitz through the games, especially since Colosseum came before FRLG and didn't have badges or an obedience mechanic. Ruby and Sapphire released so long before the rest that it does make SOME kind of sense for Game Freak to limit trading in order to prevent that from happening.
      Not to mention that if people can complete their dex in a weekend just from renting the games... what was stopping them from beating the game? Mewtwo is a post-game Mon, exclusive to FRLG. Several different Mons are late-game, such as the fossils. What's the idea there, that the player got a 100% Kanto dex (at least for their Kanto version) but the extra hour and a half to unlock Hoenn trading is the one thing keeping them from trading it all away to another game? What would stop them from trading it to a different Kanto game, then? And sure, this other Kanto game could also be used to power level their team, but it's a lot less likely to happen when the Kanto games released at the same time, but Ruby and Sapphire had released like two years prior to that.

    Colosseum was a really fun game. A more teenage edgelord vibe than the mainline games, you played as either a reformed villain working to atone for your past sins, or someone who was working undercover and had to bail on it to fight them more outright (I don't know if they ever clarified this or if it was up to you to fill in the blanks).
    The game was exclusively double battles, and you start with both Espeon and Umbreon at level 20-something, feeling like you have a jump start to the game.
    Plus it was the first 3D Pokemon game, which made the game feel more alive. Only downsides were that if you wanted to trade any Pokemon you caught, you had to purify them first. And you couldn't catch wild Pokemon, you could only "snag" shadow Pokemon from the villains of the game, and there were very few available in comparison to a mainline game.
    As the budget option for trading, they had the Game Boy Player was $50. I already had a GameCube for playing other games, and a second GBA would have cost $100. Plus if you wanted to play GB games on the TV (larger and no batteries required) you could do so.

    I love colosseum. It's so refreshing the whole deal of everything being a double battle and hitting the floor running. Plus that early 2000s vibe will always hold a special place for me since gen 1 and gen 3 were my first Pokémon games (i had gen 2 but slept on em until their batteries died for some reason). My only issue is its closeness to me playing stadium 2. Though i appreciate playing with all these johtomon, i was really hoping to see more Hoenn since theyre actually new models and animations than stadium 2. Then after finally beating the game and collecting all the shadow Pokémon, a problem: my memory card was on the fritz. Almost every time i'd boot up the game, it'd flag a save file corruption and send me to a previous state. My third party big chungus memory card was effectively baking itself due to that capacity, according to my reading, this meant at any time, all my Pokémon could be wiped out. So, I had to blitz through the mount battle game mode, get Ho-Oh, and start the exodus. Thankfully everything went smoothly, I even got all my tms and rare items out with my Pokémon. The save even corrupted, cloning my Zigzagoon i had carrying shadowball tm30. So i named both of them and left the clone behind in colosseum to keep watch until the end of time. Also you cant move colosseum or XD save data between memory cards hence the exodus was necessary to save them. On the bright side, this means one day I'll be able to shiny hunt through colosseum.
    This exodus and sapphire being my most favorite child of gen 3 with most of the Hoenndex filled, lead me to filling the nationaldex in sapphire. All that's left are the Kanto legends, Mew, Celebi, and Deoxys. (My firered copy is used and they game ended the birds and i wanna shiny hunt them in leafgreen. I am glad that Sun and Moon finally set a new precedence for the Pokédex after around a decade of... this.
    Sun and Moon were the first games to to get rid of the National Pokédex. Now this isn't like Sword and Shield which made Pokémon straight up unavailable through any means. It made any Pokémon outside of the regional Pokédex not count towards any completion. With Sun and Moon, all 300 Pokémon required to complete the Pokédex could be found in those 2 games, meaning at minimum, you just needed another friend with a copy to complete it.
    Another reason I'm glad for this is because of the Shiny Charm. It was an item introduced in Black 2 and White 2 as a reward for completing the National Pokédex, and has remained the reward for it since. It effectively doubled the chance of finding Shiny Pokémon. But it just made the task more demoralizing to know that in B2W2 and Gen 6 locked such a valuable (to certain people) item behind such an arduous and unreasonable task.

    Long story time:
    As someone who grew up in India, getting a GBA and buying Pokemon games was a big challenge in itself. I got introduced to the games through a bootleg CD containing a modded Gold ROM and an emulator. The ROM was the Japanese version with a half assed attempt to add English dialogue - the game text was basically wingdings by the time I reached Goldenrod and I ended up beating the E4 with absolutely no idea what was going on story or dialogue wise.
    Nevertheless, I enjoyed the games so much that my parents got me legitimate copies of Sapphire and Diamond and a GBA and DS. I became more serious about emulators once more and opened me up to a whole world of games I could have never afforded. I marveled at the passion that people had for games and technical problem solving and that is what got me into programming, which I really enjoy doing day in and out.

    As someone who has and plays exclusively Japanese stuff I don’t see a problem with this. Considering Japan is the size of the State of California and both of those cultures and areas are relatively similar. The premise and concept of Pokémon was to find a community and play locally with friends which was easier in Japan. I think Pokémon was more corporate and cynical outside of Japan with the catchphrase “catch them all”. So I guess that’s more of miscommunication or misunderstanding of how to implement and introduce Pokémon, but was also a catchphrase that worked and made it the popular media it is now. As far as events and other games I never saw it as bad unless you were a hard core dedicated person who took “catch them all” to heart and the primary objective of the game. Fire Red and Leaf Green were meant to be retrofits of the first games and be an accessible way to implement Red and Blue Pokémon while also adding harder to obtain Gold and Silver Pokémon. Which is what the Colosseum games did too with the mythical and legendary Pokémon being relatively easy to get while also having a newer experience. Plus they needed a game to play for TV monitors like what Stadium 1, 2 and Stadium Gold and Silver did for earlier games.
    Never seen your videos before and this is my first. Had to watch it because it’s my favorite and the generation we play on our game store too.

      A lot of the features in Pokémon games and Nintendo consoles make a LOT more sense when you consider they were specifically made for Japanese players. ....I understand your frustrations relating to catching every Pokemon, but I fail to see why the Pokemon anime and Adventures manga are specifically brought up for Gen 3. And there's no Pokemon rewards for watching the anime or reading the manga, is there?

      @@arthurkernkamp5062 I'm not detracting from his personal experience, I'm just...confused. He's not wrong in pointing out the ways that the Pokemon Company shifted focus away from the games in favor of the overall brand, and it was formed after the release of Gold and Silver....but those two things in particular didn't make sense to bring up. And he does have a point about how Pokemon operates basically purely on massive inertia and does a lot of things just for the sake of it.

    • @Lyra
      @Lyra  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right, it is not presented well, and some examples I used were not specific to Gen 3. The goal was to evoke the feeling that Gen 1 felt like everything revolved around Red & Blue, whereas Gen 3 felt like it was going through the motions and not relying on the core games as much anymore.
      For instance, I show the cartridges of both Pokémon Pinball games, as it shows the Gen 1 game being a genuine attempt at bringing something new to the table with the rumbling cartridge, while Gen 3 is a straightforward sequel without the rumbling feature and just new Pokémon.
      Admittedly, it is a very clunky and lacking way to present this for sure, and I am not super pleased with it as well. I'll do better next time!

    Lovely video, but the opening feels kind of inaccurate? The pokemon craze was HUGE for gen 1 and 2 if you were around. The “spinoffs, movies, and card games” you listed all existed for 1 and 2. We had several seasons of a tv show, 4 movies, and a tv special (mewtwo returns) all based on the first 2 gens. The movies were big theatrical releases too. We had the TCG, we had the manga, we had all sorts of merch and aisles of toys. Pokemon marbles, pokemon pogs, pokemon figurines, pokemon playsets, everything. We had books, magazines, guides official and unofficial. We had Pokeballs at Burger King. It was inescapable. We had spinoffs like Pokemon stadium 1 and 2, pokemon pinball, pokemon TCG for GBC, pokemon snap, hey you pikachu, pokemon puzzle league, and 6 mainline games all within about a 3 year span. We had event pokemon with mew and UNOBTAINABLE pokemon like celebi due to not getting the GS ball. We has spinoff exclusive pokemon too like the surfing pikachu from stadium. As someone who has been into pokemon since it came to the west, it feels wildly inaccurate to say it exploded during Gen III. Gen III is my favorite old school gen gameplay wise, but the reality is it was actually in decline at this point, though you may have become more aware of the franchise at that time.

    Not sure what the rant about Gen 3 was about since that's kind of how all Pokemon games operated: "Gotta Catch em' All" was a slogan invented by the international markets while Japan's was simply "Get Pokemon" or something. Also I find the inclusion of other Pokemon merch like the Manga and Anime as contributing to the rant as a bit weird since that's pretty much how all multimedia franchises operate. As an example I'm not going to miss out of Lord of the Rings lore because I didn't watch The Rings of Power or buy the Lego sets.

      I see a few comments but I'll reiterate here, Colosseum locks getting Ho-oh until you complete not only the game, but the additional battle mode, as well as capturing and purifying all the shadow Pokemon. So maybe keep that in mind before going catch crazy for things in Emerald and Leaf Green. No point in wasting time if you're going to have to do it again as part of a mandatory section. And getting Lugia in XD isn't as involved, but you need to do a lot. You will need to catch and purify 36 different Shadow Pokemon before you can even get a chance. And.. well maybe it is a lot. Without getting too into the details, just know you're better off capturing and purifying every Shadow Pokemon as you go in both games, makes it a lot easier.
      Also I am glad you're playing through them, they are great and I feel more people should experience those two games. Pretty stoked to see how you like them.

    Personally, Gen 3 was my introduction. My first impressions of gen 1 and 2 were how slow and broken they are, with none of the streamlining of gen 3 onwards. I also was surprised by the lack of the Sevii islands if you can believe it. I can also tell that you never played the gamecube games since, despite not playing XD as much as FireRed or Emerald just from having less content, I remember my time with XD much more because of the completely different atmosphere the game had (I never actually played Colosseum). I consider XD to be one of my favourite Pokemon games period, easily above the mainline games of the generation (though Emerald does come close).
