Wow, I must have missed the 10k subscribers 😊 CIG has to improve something, only a percentage of the people that bought the package could play. Thanks Dave.
Moving from AMD 5950 and 6800xt with a 34” va 1440 screen to a 9800x3d and 7900xtx and a 4K 34” oled monitor. Cost me two years of work bonus and some overtime but man I am excited to put it together once the motherboard finally arrives.
I´m currently on a 5800X3D and as that system is basically topped out I´ll most likely end up getting a 9800X3D sometime next year when I´m building my new rig.
In a very weird spot with my setup at the moment. Running a 3080 and 5800X3D. For all other games the CPU is still easily enough, overkill even, making a 50 series card (when available) the logical next upgrade. But.... I do play a lot of star citizen where the 3080 still isn't really being pushed at 4k with dlss.... Making the 9800X3D very tempting.
I have a 5800x3d / 4080 Super system and a 7800x3d / 4090 system. *I dumped the 7900xtx because of the vapor chamber issues I suffered. The 9800x3d / 5090 - is a generation I plan to skip this time. 9800x3d is clearly faster, but it's not enough to chase the upgrade at this point. Moore's law's insight into the 5090 MSRP has also made me consider skipping that GPU generation with my recent refreshes. I'm good for now! Love the work you do, my systems are 100% SC dedicated. I need to stop being lazy and tune my RAM, but I do not think it makes a huge difference with these x3D chips :)
Native frame generation would be so welcome to have along this new chips that this game would stop being perceived as a performance behemoth and maybe it can be more accessible to newcomers.
Same , 5950 X , with a 3090 kingpin. Still manage to get over 170 FPS in arena commander . At this point, it's the game Engine and CIG , that has to start doing something. But hey , the sales department is more important .😅
I have two pc's both 5800x3d builds. I'll be building a 9800x3d to replace one of them. Here's hoping Black Friday or Cyber Monday will help with some good deals.
I'm on a 5800x / 3090 for the last four years and I'm happy with that for about another six years. It's fun to theorycraft about what tech will be around in 2029.
Yeah from my humble 5800x, i think its massive upgrade but the price of the cpu is so all over the place. I'll wait and let the price settle at normal standards.
@ that’s a good idea. I have a 7700x and I got it because it got me into amd5 componentes, but with a prebuilt was $600 cheaper than if I’d gotten a 7800x3d. I’m just not sure if I’m going to wait for the 9800x3d’s piece to go down or for the 10800x3d to come out lol
@ It’s a 20-30% gain in every game so long as your graphics card can spit out the fps so I’d say it is if you’re ok getting what’s basically a whole new PC since you’ll need a whole new motherboard. I would not upgrade JUST for the cpu from an intel, but if you’re already upgrading, this is definitely the way to go
@@asog88 you must be joking if you expect 20-30%fps gain in any game just by upgrading 14900k to 9800x3d, considering the fact that single core performance is way lower in amd
I'm upgrading because its been a bit since I last heard positve things said about a CPU release. That, and I built my last PC in anticipation of the Fallout 4 release so I think its time.
Not sure if you live near a micro center, i'd guess the 7600x3d would just be abit lower than the 7800x3d. Was just checking if you'd agree or not :D tyty for all your videos LOVE THEM!!!!
i have still got my 5900X which is fine, but i am waiting to see how performance looks between the 9800x3d and the 9900x3d/9950x3d with the different CCU/V-cache layouts to see which i upgrade to. if there is no lag issues for multi CCU I would prefer to upgrade to a chip with more cores. also didn't like the 7000x3d series due to the thermal throttling with the v-cache placement. would be nice to see more of the none X3D models in your charts. 9900X, 9950X, 5900X, 5950X, 7950X etc... if the price is prohibitive you could always ask some of the community for some loaners while doing your testing. as always thanks for the hard work.
5800x3D/4090 owner here... was thinking of upgrading but until SC is in a place I play daily, I won't spend more money on it. Definitely looks like there are gains to be had, for a whole new MB/RAM/CPU though. But CIG needs to optimize the cities better. Just imagine when basebuilding will hit the planets. Thanks for the numbers.
The biggest difference to previous generations is that the 9800x3d can actually be overclocked without cooking itself due to the 3d cache now being below the ccd. Since the game likes clock speed this can be a significant factor for a purchasing decision. If you leave it stock you wont gain nearly as much. The correct ram and settings for the infinity fabric are as important as ever.
I'm currently running a 5800x paired with an 7900XTX, was waiting to see how much the 9800X3D would cost for a future proofing build. It would be a huge boost for me, generally in Stanton I get around 50-60 fps, but haven't been to Area 18 or Lorvile since 3.24.0 dropped, mainly cause the game was in a really bad state, even the good places were bad. The game has gotten better, just me travels haven't taken me to those cities, will have to check them out.
Just bought one (along with whole new PC). Going 2700X/RX580/16gb => 9800x3D/RTX4080S/64gb. Hoping that will bring the game from barely playable at 1080p to best performance available at ultra-wide 1440p.
It will perform about the same at the 9700x in SC. I'm no expert on streaming at all but I've found the 7800x3d to be fine to stream with as long as I'm using the GPU to do the encoding.
I just purchased a 7800x3d/4090 system in October. I gambled that the 9800x3d wouldn't be head-and-shoulders faster than the 7800 and I appear to have been correct. I won't be upgrading any time soon.
That x3d turbo mode (assuming same as mine because it looks like gigabyte auorus bios) disables SMT so just 8 cores but it does seem to boost single core performance by a bit. Obviously games like SC that have a good amount multithreaded it sucks
In the future when the game is fully multithreaded the 9800x3d will increase its lead because of a way higher wattage budget. 72w vs 120w now, and oc 72 vs 150W overclocked.
im still on AM4, 5800x3d. If im not able to push 120 fps anywhere and need frame generation to get a stable 120 frame rate on 4k with a 4090. Im not going to pay for an upgrade. I will wait until either CIG optimizes, or AMD/Intel releases something new that does it. aslong as stuff keeps working im staying on 5800x3d.
I’m actually in the market right now for a new cpu and motherboard. I’m upgrading from an ancient i7 6700k and I’m torn between the 7800x3d and the 9700x. I realize the 7800x3d is more powerful than the 9700x, but the chip alone is $200 more (in Canada) compared to the 9700x, and the bundle I can get a 9700x with motherboard and ram is $678 vs about $1150 for the 7800x and I really don’t want to spend that much right now.
I have an AM4 5800X mated with a Tuff 3070 and 64GB of ram. I average 55fps at 4k with it dipping to 38fps (still get 15fps to 23fps moments), I monitor everything in my system and have noticed what the cpu and gpu handle seems to be inconsistent in game. Some days I'll log in and gpu working at 80% - 90%, cpu at 35%... then other days gpu and cpu at 96% - 99%. I've been almost considering a 5950 just for the extra cores.
When CIG can get over 60fps solidly on a 4090 with a good cpu and the meshing is keeping the servees at a steady 30+, then its time to upgrade, not before then, unless squadron looks good enough to justify
I'm going from a 5900x to a 9800x3d and wondering what discord he's talking about. I want to tune my ram and get the most out of my upgrade as I plan to daily sc
Great to see the performance of 9800X3D. But its only for an theoretical purpose ? It will probably take years until SC finally runs stably and then there will be the 15900X3D with AM7 socket ;-)
I don't tend to get too deep into motherboards, but the general advice is that you don't particularly need the high end board. I'd recommend coming over to the discord to ask for some help (plenty of people there who know more than me!). Thank you very much looking at the reviews the 9800x3d looks great. but in SC we are not using all cores and threads so even if the 9950x3d comes with 2 CCD's with V cache it wont make much difference until all the CPU cores are used. I'll will be keeping my 7800x3d for 2 more years I think when zen 6 comes out with a new IO chip this may help improvements, or not LOL they did say that we would be able to use all our cores so that would help dont you think ?

Any suggestions?
Im actually waiting for the release date of SQ42 for sure! Then a month earlier I will put together the BEST PC money can buy! Also is good to wait because DDR6 memories are about to get out in 2025.. SInce ram makes so much difference.. We will be seeing ram speeds past 10.000 mhz easily.. Also NVME 2.0 pci 5.0 are past 10000 MB/s transfers.. The best thing now is to wait for SQ42.
If you do test the Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU please do so with the 9000MHz or atleast 8600MHz CUDIMM ram, since it is the only platform that supports that high ram speeds atm and could make quite the difference in SC
Not that easy since these speeds are reserved for expensive RAM which often requires additional cooling (and air cooling is ineffective), stability is an issue as benchmarking is one thing, running stable - another. I'm saying that because I own 14900KF with proper RAM, but using it over 8000 has always been an issue. Runs great until it deces not to after some reboot.
I am abit on the fence I actually got my 7800x3d for $290, but delayed my Pc build for months due to various reasons now I’m wondering should I get the 9800x3d now and use the 7800x3d to another project
@ true the original plan back in June was get 7800x3d +new MoBo etc. then around March start ITX build move 7800x3d and replace Main PC with 9800x3d. But it’s so late so I’m just thinking now
looking at my 5 5600x so far down on the chart hurts. but its starting to get older. feels like i just upgraded yesterday though and now its already outdated.. ugh
Super bummed the 7800x3d was $350 USD over the weekend and I hesitated. Now back up to $450. Hopefully can get one back at that price over black Friday / cyber Monday

The 9800x3d seems to be suitabale to do so. Would be interesting to see if the frames keep on increasing or if there is a diminishing return.
Edit - i am talking about manual overclocking and not pbo
Just got rid of my 7800 for it. Definitely worth the extra $100, especially when $1500 GPUs are coming out in a couple months. Ill take 10%
Wow, I must have missed the 10k subscribers 😊
CIG has to improve something, only a percentage of the people that bought the package could play. Thanks Dave.
Thank you for your videos
No problem!
My 5950x/3080 will be my system for years to come. Thank you
Ayyy same CPU with a 3090. Once my 4k gaming dips below 60 fps with DLSS, I'll upgrade. Either that or something dies
Same , 5950 X , with a 3090 kingpin.
Still manage to get over 170 FPS in arena commander .
At this point, it's the game Engine and CIG , that has to start doing something.
But hey , the sales department is more important .😅
Here we go!
Id never say its worth an upgrade from a 7800x3d, but from anything else? Yes
Yeah I think that's probably a good summary of it all!
I would not upgrade JUST for the cpu from an intel, but if you’re already upgrading, this is definitely the way to go
@@asog88 you must be joking if you expect 20-30%fps gain in any game just by upgrading 14900k to 9800x3d, considering the fact that single core performance is way lower in amd
i am on a 5800 X3D and 7900 XTX with WQHD and i can Wait for AM6/9900 XTX (hopefully) and 4K
I'll upgrade when a working version of SC 1.0 happens, the 11800X3D :)
I'm upgrading because its been a bit since I last heard positve things said about a CPU release. That, and I built my last PC in anticipation of the Fallout 4 release so I think its time.
Thanks. I hope you're gonna test its 16-core cousin when they release in a few months! I hope the 3D cache will be available to all 16 cores.
Yeah if they put v cache on the whole thing I'll check it out!
@@tenpoundfortytwo Well, if they don't, it's going to be worse than 9800X3D in SC. Unless they optimize for 16 threads, rather than for cache.
Upgraded to 9800x3d from a 5900x. Safe to say the performance increase has been incredible.
That's a great upgrade- enjoy!
I'm still running the 3900X! Looking forward to the upgrade to 9800x3d
Not sure if you live near a micro center, i'd guess the 7600x3d would just be abit lower than the 7800x3d. Was just checking if you'd agree or not :D tyty for all your videos LOVE THEM!!!!
Great Video!
i have still got my 5900X which is fine, but i am waiting to see how performance looks between the 9800x3d and the 9900x3d/9950x3d with the different CCU/V-cache layouts to see which i upgrade to. if there is no lag issues for multi CCU I would prefer to upgrade to a chip with more cores. also didn't like the 7000x3d series due to the thermal throttling with the v-cache placement. would be nice to see more of the none X3D models in your charts. 9900X, 9950X, 5900X, 5950X, 7950X etc... if the price is prohibitive you could always ask some of the community for some loaners while doing your testing. as always thanks for the hard work.
I think Ill get the 9700x, it performs well enough close to 7800x3d for half the price when memory is tuned
can't wait for the 9950x3d, especially when streaming and recording in 4k, discord, at the same time. would be sweet to see testing with all that
Yeah if both chiplets are faster and X3D'd that may be the new king.
I honestly wonder how intel core ultra performs with Star Citizen. Even just to see if it's worse than previous chips
X3D turbo mode on Aorus disables SMT and optimizes some RAM timings
The biggest difference to previous generations is that the 9800x3d can actually be overclocked without cooking itself due to the 3d cache now being below the ccd. Since the game likes clock speed this can be a significant factor for a purchasing decision. If you leave it stock you wont gain nearly as much. The correct ram and settings for the infinity fabric are as important as ever.
I have a 5600x... driving 6 hours round trip tomorrow to get a 9800x3d from microcenter for 470
Need to test in cockpit where the MFDs push performance.
any thoughts on where the MicroCenter Exclusive 7600x3D slots in to these results?
Thanks for this, glad I stuck with my OC 7800x3d. Really wanted to spend that $480 on a 9800x3d and instead got a $499 M4 Mac mini to play with.
what aboput the 9900x for streamers?
It will perform about the same at the 9700x in SC. I'm no expert on streaming at all but I've found the 7800x3d to be fine to stream with as long as I'm using the GPU to do the encoding.
I just purchased a 7800x3d/4090 system in October. I gambled that the 9800x3d wouldn't be head-and-shoulders faster than the 7800 and I appear to have been correct. I won't be upgrading any time soon.
Im sticking with my 7950X3D, still getting 125FPS average in cities at 1440p Ultrawide maxed out.
That x3d turbo mode (assuming same as mine because it looks like gigabyte auorus bios) disables SMT so just 8 cores but it does seem to boost single core performance by a bit. Obviously games like SC that have a good amount multithreaded it sucks
ive already bought one
9700x is still a good option, and gives you upgrade options in the future!
@ I guess that’s true, so long as they use AM5 for a while.
@iKevinF should get at least the 10 series- the x3d chips should end up being a decent upgrade for you!
bro no 4k?, but damn that jump from 5800x3D to 9800x3D cant wait for my 9800x3D on December
Discord link should be in the video description!
Gonna upgrade from a i7 6850k to the 9800X3D, GPU is the 3090 atm, 5090 in Jan probably. Will I get some serious fps gains?
The cpu should make a big difference! I'd see how the 3090 is doing before picking up the 5090- the 3090 is still pretty powerful!
Great to see the performance of 9800X3D. But its only for an theoretical purpose ? It will probably take years until SC finally runs stably and then there will be the 15900X3D with AM7 socket ;-)
Great video , would you have some recommended settings for best quality with performance ? As this seems to change depending on the patch
Which mobo would you recommend for 7800x3d and Star Citizen?
I don't tend to get too deep into motherboards, but the general advice is that you don't particularly need the high end board. I'd recommend coming over to the discord to ask for some help (plenty of people there who know more than me!). But also hardware unboxed does some good MB comparison videos: th-cam.com/video/ZtHOOyWYiic/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/UN2gkbMQ2fs/w-d-xo.html
@@tenpoundfortytwo Thanks a lot! Love your vids! May I ask another question, how does the 14900k compared to the 7800x3d for Star Citizen? At my place they have the similar price, but the 14900k is cheaper for me because it doesn't need a new mobo.
I'm curious about the ryzen 9's Like the 9950x as SC loves multicores now with vulcan ^^
Thank you very much looking at the reviews the 9800x3d looks great. but in SC we are not using all cores and threads so even if the 9950x3d comes with 2 CCD's with V cache it wont make much difference until all the CPU cores are used. I'll will be keeping my 7800x3d for 2 more years I think when zen 6 comes out with a new IO chip this may help improvements, or not LOL
they did say that we would be able to use all our cores so that would help dont you think ?
I'm planning out my first gaming desktop after four years of gaming laptops; the plan is AM5 with a 4070 ti super and a 9800x3d but when i put it in pc parts picker the price was $480, now it's $630 and I'm starting to wonder if i should go with a cheaper non x3d just to start gaming and grab the 9800x3d when the prices get more reasonable.
Hmm interesting one, that's a good price for the 7800x3d. You might actually be able to sell it for more if you decide to get the 9800x3d!
@ true the original plan back in June was get 7800x3d +new MoBo etc. then around March start ITX build move 7800x3d and replace Main PC with 9800x3d. But it’s so late so I’m just thinking now
do you test in the same patch for every CPU?
Yep!
I thought the only major difference between the 7800 and 9800 was the structure for heat?
looking at my 5 5600x so far down on the chart hurts. but its starting to get older. feels like i just upgraded yesterday though and now its already outdated.. ugh
Good news is that the 5700/5800X3D are not too expensive!
It would be awesome if you could add ultra widescreen testing 3440x1440.
I think the plan is with my 5800x. Is to wait for the 10800x3D to come out and buy the 9800x3D or when the prices settle down.
FINALY !!!
Sitting on a 5800X3D and definitely side eyeing the 9800X3D pretty hard. But then it's also unobtanium and also about $300 more than a 9700x...
5800x3D is solid! Wait one more generation
@@_TrueDesire_ too late!
Super bummed the 7800x3d was $350 USD over the weekend and I hesitated. Now back up to $450. Hopefully can get one back at that price over black Friday / cyber Monday
Yeah hopefully the prices will normalise soon!
How about the 14900k on DDR5 6000+? I think it would do similar or better than 9800x3d, is that the case?
