Wow, I must have missed the 10k subscribers 😊 CIG has to improve something, only a percentage of the people that bought the package could play. Thanks Dave.
The biggest difference to previous generations is that the 9800x3d can actually be overclocked without cooking itself due to the 3d cache now being below the ccd. Since the game likes clock speed this can be a significant factor for a purchasing decision. If you leave it stock you wont gain nearly as much. The correct ram and settings for the infinity fabric are as important as ever.
Thank you so much, I was considering buying it, as I have saved up a long time to get my "Star Citizen" computer, but it was really sad to see the FPS on Pyro. I undertstand their explanation, but it makes me consider continuing to wait for and hope for a breakthrough in hardware.
Thank you for making this video. Currently running a 5800x with 6700xt gpu. Thinking I should probably upgrade the gpu first since that will be transferable when I eventually make the platform change. Especially since they said at citizen con they would be making changes to shift some of the load off the cpu to the gpu.
I got a 5800x3d and let me tell you why I wont upgrade. Its still a wicked cpu for a good price. And I appreciate the hardware videos and support enthusaists that want to do that sort of thing but lets be real here, CIG need to optimize the game. The game is really unoptimized and it requires a lot of work. Typically if you get a mid-range to high-range build you'll get 40-100 fps for Star Citizen, but you'll fly in every other AAA optimized game. Hope people keep this in mind. In addition, it doesn't matter what CPU you have if CIG have server problems.
I have two pc's both 5800x3d builds. I'll be building a 9800x3d to replace one of them. Here's hoping Black Friday or Cyber Monday will help with some good deals.
5800x3D/4090 owner here... was thinking of upgrading but until SC is in a place I play daily, I won't spend more money on it. Definitely looks like there are gains to be had, for a whole new MB/RAM/CPU though. But CIG needs to optimize the cities better. Just imagine when basebuilding will hit the planets. Thanks for the numbers.
Missed you at citcon unfortunately. But amazing video as always! I'm rocking a 3950X, so I think it's time to get on the 3D bandwagon and get a 9800X3D.
Thank you for taking the time to do a review! You are really helping the SC community in a big way with your channel. Have you thought about the performance with overclocking? The 9800x3d seems to be suitabale to do so. Would be interesting to see if the frames keep on increasing or if there is a diminishing return. Edit - i am talking about manual overclocking and not pbo
I just purchased a 7800x3d/4090 system in October. I gambled that the 9800x3d wouldn't be head-and-shoulders faster than the 7800 and I appear to have been correct. I won't be upgrading any time soon.
I have a 5800x3d / 4080 Super system and a 7800x3d / 4090 system. *I dumped the 7900xtx because of the vapor chamber issues I suffered. The 9800x3d / 5090 - is a generation I plan to skip this time. 9800x3d is clearly faster, but it's not enough to chase the upgrade at this point. Moore's law's insight into the 5090 MSRP has also made me consider skipping that GPU generation with my recent refreshes. I'm good for now! Love the work you do, my systems are 100% SC dedicated. I need to stop being lazy and tune my RAM, but I do not think it makes a huge difference with these x3D chips :)
Same , 5950 X , with a 3090 kingpin. Still manage to get over 170 FPS in arena commander . At this point, it's the game Engine and CIG , that has to start doing something. But hey , the sales department is more important .😅
I'm currently running a 5800x paired with an 7900XTX, was waiting to see how much the 9800X3D would cost for a future proofing build. It would be a huge boost for me, generally in Stanton I get around 50-60 fps, but haven't been to Area 18 or Lorvile since 3.24.0 dropped, mainly cause the game was in a really bad state, even the good places were bad. The game has gotten better, just me travels haven't taken me to those cities, will have to check them out.
The 9800X3D has provided the smoothest experience I've ever had in Star Citizen. PBO + 200 Max Clock -40 Curve Optimizer 48 GB DDR5 8400 2100 Infinity Fabric It's a shame that the 285K was a disappointment for gaming. A well overclocked 14900KS can still contend with the 9800X3D in some games, but at insane risk of degradation or just an overwhelmingly high power draw. Maybe if the rumours are true, they'll put the IMC on the compute tile with the 385K. The 285K has a 77ns roundtrip latency for the IMC, whereas Raptor Lake and Lunar Lake have a 55ns latency.
8:00 Tbf to AMD, the 9800X3D is WAY better than the 7800X3D at productivity tasks thanks to the new version of V-Cache. So in THAT sense, it's not quite like 14nm+++++, but I get your meaning.
Im actually waiting for the release date of SQ42 for sure! Then a month earlier I will put together the BEST PC money can buy! Also is good to wait because DDR6 memories are about to get out in 2025.. SInce ram makes so much difference.. We will be seeing ram speeds past 10.000 mhz easily.. Also NVME 2.0 pci 5.0 are past 10000 MB/s transfers.. The best thing now is to wait for SQ42.
Unless the 5700X3D fails to hit a locked 60 by 1.0, I'm sticking with it. CIG isn't even nearly done optimizing, and frame gen / AFMF breaks through CPU bottlenecks, nevermind that I'll be GPU limited at 4K. It's just too much bang-for-buck to upgrade from without more compelling reasons. 🤷🏿♂️
The 9800x3d is a lot cooler and an easy swapout for a £100 upgrade on a 7800x3d (if you where fast). Pyro has tones of logging going on , server meshing will help with performance,
In a very weird spot with my setup at the moment. Running a 3080 and 5800X3D. For all other games the CPU is still easily enough, overkill even, making a 50 series card (when available) the logical next upgrade. But.... I do play a lot of star citizen where the 3080 still isn't really being pushed at 4k with dlss.... Making the 9800X3D very tempting.
In the future when the game is fully multithreaded the 9800x3d will increase its lead because of a way higher wattage budget. 72w vs 120w now, and oc 72 vs 150W overclocked.
Hey congrats on the recovery form the sickness! Make sure to check the ram. I bought cl32 and upping the voltage I was able to even test out cl26 which increased the performance massively. Im also curious if 9950x3d will change anything when it comes out or the framerates remain the same.
Great to see the performance of 9800X3D. But its only for an theoretical purpose ? It will probably take years until SC finally runs stably and then there will be the 15900X3D with AM7 socket ;-)
Thank you very much looking at the reviews the 9800x3d looks great. but in SC we are not using all cores and threads so even if the 9950x3d comes with 2 CCD's with V cache it wont make much difference until all the CPU cores are used. I'll will be keeping my 7800x3d for 2 more years I think when zen 6 comes out with a new IO chip this may help improvements, or not LOL they did say that we would be able to use all our cores so that would help dont you think ?
For me I dont think it's the right time to upgrade from my 3080 and 5800X3D. My system is okay-ish, and as you pointed out late in the video, a lot of the poor performance is on CIG's end with how they release unoptimized builds with heavy logging etc. My plan is to keep my current computer until the next generation of RTX cards, and then buy a brand new computer with the best hardware available which *should* be good enough to run both SC and Sq42. Hopefully that's not too naive!
Great video ! I run on AM4 with 5800x3d. I just upgraded from a 3090 to a 4080 and it's already night and day for me as I play in 4K. I was wondering if I should pull the trigger and continue to upgrade my rig toward AM5 with a 7800x3d or 9800x3d. Tough call indeed. Granted I will get about 15 to 20 fps more in main cities, but the extra cost required for that upgrade doesn't seem to be worth it in the end. How long do we spend in main cities before flying somewhere easier on entity counts anyway ? I think they just need to optimize their game and as you shew on your last clip in Pyro the best gear can't do much vs a game in alpha state which is not yet optimized ! I will try to keep cool with Black Friday ! :D
If you do test the Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU please do so with the 9000MHz or atleast 8600MHz CUDIMM ram, since it is the only platform that supports that high ram speeds atm and could make quite the difference in SC
The only thing I'm waiting for now is if 9950X3D will have 3D-vCache on both CCDs or not. If no, 9800X3D it is. Going to go with RTX 5080 on top of it. Coming from 5800X3D/RTX3080. Want to run 3840x1600 and eventually upgrade to 5120x2160 OLED UW (39-42") when they come out.
7800x3d prices are so high, it now serves mostly for people to say how lucky they were to buy this at its lowest price! If the prices were much lower Id could see myself getting it, but decided to go for 9800 and not think about cpu for some years (the 60 dollar difference made it look good - congratulations amd marketing) Absolutely right on its being CIG turn to bring this performance around. 1.0. may be eternally 2 years away, but 7800 or 9800 is still far away from acessible and we need all peoples able to play this and have fun
When CIG can get over 60fps solidly on a 4090 with a good cpu and the meshing is keeping the servees at a steady 30+, then its time to upgrade, not before then, unless squadron looks good enough to justify
Do you have a recommended AM5 motherboard to get the best from the 9800X3D (without going totally mad budgetwise)? Also seen a lot of reports recently of SC gobbling more than 32GB RAM when available... do you think 64GB will be the new normal for SC in the next couple of years?
Unless you go crazy budget they should all perform pretty much the same. Hardware unboxed has some am5 comparison videos that might be worth checking out! I think if you're wanting to future proof it's worth considering 64GB of ram, but I didn't really find a great reason when I tested recently: th-cam.com/video/7SzCCn2IwKs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PUAER0iNW_oZM5rr
Super bummed the 7800x3d was $350 USD over the weekend and I hesitated. Now back up to $450. Hopefully can get one back at that price over black Friday / cyber Monday
Im planing on upgradig my 5700x and zotac 3080ti with 32 GB ram to a completely new system. Do you think it enough to get the current best thing (9800X3D and 4090 with 64 GB DDR5) or should i just wait and get the 5090 when it comes out?. Thank in advance for the advice.
I really appreciate what you are doing but I always get depressed when we realize that main issue with main render tread will be resolved good knows when. We have beautiful game that we cat really enjoy it is a torture :\
I'm planning out my first gaming desktop after four years of gaming laptops; the plan is AM5 with a 4070 ti super and a 9800x3d but when i put it in pc parts picker the price was $480, now it's $630 and I'm starting to wonder if i should go with a cheaper non x3d just to start gaming and grab the 9800x3d when the prices get more reasonable. Any suggestions?
I absolutely would not expect to see any serious optimization of star citizen right now they're not going to do that until after the game is content complete as they would say
I want to say the Gamers Nexus ran into problems testing their 9800X3D on a 670 board. They switched to a 870 board and the problems went away and the performance tests they had done improved. I don't know what motherboard you tested with.
I have an AM4 5800X mated with a Tuff 3070 and 64GB of ram. I average 55fps at 4k with it dipping to 38fps (still get 15fps to 23fps moments), I monitor everything in my system and have noticed what the cpu and gpu handle seems to be inconsistent in game. Some days I'll log in and gpu working at 80% - 90%, cpu at 35%... then other days gpu and cpu at 96% - 99%. I've been almost considering a 5950 just for the extra cores.
my rigs are 3yo living room family htpc family (steamOS) with b550+5600+6600+16GB@3200MTcl14 and main is 1yo with b650+7800x3d+7900xtx+32GB@5600MTcl26, so in my case I will wait 1 year for Zen5x3d to get bios and windows fixes and then will upgrade, having that time to save more for a better gpu and ddr5 with 64GB,96 or 128GB will do.
That x3d turbo mode (assuming same as mine because it looks like gigabyte auorus bios) disables SMT so just 8 cores but it does seem to boost single core performance by a bit. Obviously games like SC that have a good amount multithreaded it sucks

Thanks. Just upgraded to the 9800x3d from the 5800x.
i am on a 5800 X3D and 7900 XTX with WQHD and i can Wait for AM6/9900 XTX (hopefully) and 4K
Upgraded to 9800x3d from a 5900x. Safe to say the performance increase has been incredible.
That's a great upgrade- enjoy!
In addition, it doesn't matter what CPU you have if CIG have server problems.
i have 5800x3d and ill get 9800x3d if it drops to about 350
@@mndeg Sure and you need to budget for a new mobo too. Which means either you pay to get yours swapped out or you take the time to do it yourself.
I have two pc's both 5800x3d builds. I'll be building a 9800x3d to replace one of them. Here's hoping Black Friday or Cyber Monday will help with some good deals.
I'll upgrade when a working version of SC 1.0 happens, the 11800X3D :)
Great video , would you have some recommended settings for best quality with performance ? As this seems to change depending on the patch
I'm still running the 3900X! Looking forward to the upgrade to 9800x3d
Im sticking with my 7950X3D, still getting 125FPS average in cities at 1440p Ultrawide maxed out.
7950x3D here and I can see no reason but to wait. Don't think I will be upgrading my 3080 either.
Yeah should be good with those parts for a good while!
Thanks. I hope you're gonna test its 16-core cousin when they release in a few months! I hope the 3D cache will be available to all 16 cores.
Yeah if they put v cache on the whole thing I'll check it out!
@@tenpoundfortytwo Well, if they don't, it's going to be worse than 9800X3D in SC. Unless they optimize for 16 threads, rather than for cache.
My 5950x/3080 will be my system for years to come. Thank you
Ayyy same CPU with a 3090. Once my 4k gaming dips below 60 fps with DLSS, I'll upgrade. Either that or something dies
Same , 5950 X , with a 3090 kingpin.
Still manage to get over 170 FPS in arena commander .
At this point, it's the game Engine and CIG , that has to start doing something.
But hey , the sales department is more important .😅
Great Video!
PBO + 200 Max Clock
-40 Curve Optimizer
48 GB DDR5 8400
2100 Infinity Fabric
It's a shame that the 285K was a disappointment for gaming.
Thank you for your videos
No problem!
8:00 Tbf to AMD, the 9800X3D is WAY better than the 7800X3D at productivity tasks thanks to the new version of V-Cache.
So in THAT sense, it's not quite like 14nm+++++, but I get your meaning.
Yeah a very good point!
Yep that sounds like a good plan!
The 9800x3d is a lot cooler and an easy swapout for a £100 upgrade on a 7800x3d (if you where fast). Pyro has tones of logging going on , server meshing will help with performance,
server meshing can only do so much, until they actually optimize the game nothing is going to fix the issues.
72w vs 120w now, and oc 72 vs 150W overclocked.
on which motherboard where the 9800X3D tests made? Great content!
Hey congrats on the recovery form the sickness!
Make sure to check the ram. I bought cl32 and upping the voltage I was able to even test out cl26 which increased the performance massively.
Im also curious if 9950x3d will change anything when it comes out or the framerates remain the same.
Yeah interesting to see how the other 9000 series x3d chips will do! Yeah I'll probably follow up with some tuned ram testing!
@@tenpoundfortytwo good luck! Don't be afraid to push the ram, and also try static oc with the cpu multiplier if you got a good watrcooler.
I'll will be keeping my 7800x3d for 2 more years I think when zen 6 comes out with a new IO chip this may help improvements, or not LOL
they did say that we would be able to use all our cores so that would help dont you think ?
For me I dont think it's the right time to upgrade from my 3080 and 5800X3D. My system is okay-ish, and as you pointed out late in the video, a lot of the poor performance is on CIG's end with how they release unoptimized builds with heavy logging etc.
My plan is to keep my current computer until the next generation of RTX cards, and then buy a brand new computer with the best hardware available which *should* be good enough to run both SC and Sq42. Hopefully that's not too naive!
I'm glad you're resisting! That system is still very decent! Waiting for SQ42 is a good idea!
bro no 4k?, but damn that jump from 5800x3D to 9800x3D cant wait for my 9800x3D on December
Keep in mind that the 9800X3D can use 8000MT/s memory, and that gives it a big boost over the 7800X3D with 6000MT/s memory.
If you do test the Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU please do so with the 9000MHz or atleast 8600MHz CUDIMM ram, since it is the only platform that supports that high ram speeds atm and could make quite the difference in SC
Hell yeah sign me up 67+ Fps from the 40+ I get Now w the 5700X3d? Time to Upgrade boys
If the prices were much lower Id could see myself getting it, but decided to go for 9800 and not think about cpu for some years (the 60 dollar difference made it look good - congratulations amd marketing)
Absolutely right on its being CIG turn to bring this performance around. 1.0. may be eternally 2 years away, but 7800 or 9800 is still far away from acessible and we need all peoples able to play this and have fun
When CIG can get over 60fps solidly on a 4090 with a good cpu and the meshing is keeping the servees at a steady 30+, then its time to upgrade, not before then, unless squadron looks good enough to justify
I think I might have the only 13900k cpu in existence that doesn't have any problems at all 😅
Here we go!
Cache memory and GPU upscaling is the solution to devs not optimizing their games :p
I think the plan is with my 5800x. Is to wait for the 10800x3D to come out and buy the 9800x3D or when the prices settle down.
Yeah hopefully the prices will normalise soon!
i have a 3080ti and a 5900X... i've been waiting period to upgrade lol, regardless, it's a huge increase for myself lol
Yeah that's going to be a big jump in performance!
@ yeah man, can’t wait lol
Love your reviews, but 13th gen i9 for the win!! No e-cores issues, just works. Can you test it?
Still going to stick with the 5800x3d a little longer but if I were buying a CPU today. It would definitely be the 9800x3d.
What resolution do you play at? The 3080 ti is still pretty powerful, so I'd probably get the other stuff first and see if you even need the new GPU!
@@tenpoundfortytwo Im playing at 4k, but tbh even if Turn the Resolution to 1080p it makes no change.
I really appreciate what you are doing but I always get depressed when we realize that main issue with main render tread will be resolved good knows when. We have beautiful game that we cat really enjoy it is a torture :\
Yeah it is a bit depressing to be honest! Hopefully CIG will start some major work to sort out performance at some point soon!
For my electricity bill, I'm holding onto the 7800X3D.
any thoughts on where the MicroCenter Exclusive 7600x3D slots in to these results?
FINALY !!!
Any suggestions?
do you test in the same patch for every CPU?
Yep!
Did you test the 4.0 PTU on EU servers? It was night and day performance wise with USA. Mayde due to the low number of players on the shard thou
Honestly, it's better if the game engine is updated and performance boost will be across the board.
That x3d turbo mode (assuming same as mine because it looks like gigabyte auorus bios) disables SMT so just 8 cores but it does seem to boost single core performance by a bit. Obviously games like SC that have a good amount multithreaded it sucks
