Fellow bird nerd here, so glad the bird videos are most popular... that's what I want to watercolor the most. I'm keeping track of the birds that visit. Had an indigo bunting a couple weeks ago, and an oriole. Not bad! I'm near Conestee so I'm not too surprised, but it's been at least four years since I've seen the bunting!
Cool! I saw the Indigo Bunting this year too and some Rose Breasted Grossbeaks. Those were a first for me and a real treat. Would love to see an Oriole in our yard but haven't yet.
Yes! We saw a mom and dad Rose Breasted Grossbeak, and what appeared to be their juvenile son from last year! They were all together feeding, and it was the first time I had seen a chick from the previous year with the mom and dad still! Gorgeous birds!
I'm with a lot of others, I totally enjoy your bird videos. I feed, water and house the little critters. They can be great entertainment, and drawing and painting them is oodles of fun!
I’ve been trying to be a watercolor purest but lately this is exactly the way I journal in my sketchbook. First a pencil sketch, then delete some graphite, then use waterproof ink in various nib sizes, followed by a watercolor wash. I like photorealistic and whimsical watercolor art. Thank you. I find these fun too.
Line and wash saved my watercolor journey, from ending too soon! My 1st try was a classic wet on wet landscape attempt, that ended up miserably. The painting wasnt even a painting, just the worst failure I ever had. Then,I drew a perfect camel walking in the desert, using a simple pencil. I painted it with my mix of colours for both the highlights and the shadows. The outcome was outstanding. It took my watercolor painting from awful to amazing, just by using the line and wash method!
Thank so much for inspiring me. - - I already made a humming bird and my wife loves it. Thank you so much not just for your expertise but for your heart's kindness and good will that comes across your work every time. - God bless you. -
These bird pics of yours is what I think really kept my interest in watercolor. I'm a detail artist and pen gives me the control I crave, but still allows me to incorporate wc. I basically learned WC exclusively from your channel btw! 😅 I'm always suggesting your channel to people. One of the best resources out there! Thank you 😊
Awesome vid, and I really enjoy the fluent and upbeat narratives. I never saw Tufted Titmouse in the wild until last week. My wife and I visited friends in Walhalla, SC. They had these birds all over the place, including a variety of finches, Downey headed Woodpeckers, Blujays, Cardinals, and Black capped Chickadees. The I find this watercolor and ink tutorial. I'm inspired.
I have been using a rigger brush with acrylic ink for my ink and wash paintings. I absolutely love the idea of this pen for portability. Thank you so much for making me aware of this. I don't want to always schlepp a bottle of ink, or a rigger brush with me everywhere I go. The micron, like you say, is not very expressive like a brush. Opens up a whole new world. Thanks again!
Hi Thank you for all the tips and tutorials. I have painted with oils and acrylics but mostly with oils. However, I recently got interested in water colours but know very little about how to use them. I have just spent the whole day watching your videos and have learned so much. I can' t draw but found I could draw the birds and then watched how you painted them, especially with the ink and water colour. I am really excited now to learn and to use them. Thank you so much. looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Maria
I have been doing mine in pencil mostly but I am going to try my new Pigma Micron pens that I got yesterday. Going to have to get the Pental Pocket Brush pen next. Now I understand why there are so many different types of pens for certain techniques and uses. Thanks for explaining the techniques and why you use them. I’m still having a hard time with getting my paintings loose too. Love all the bird videos!
Just found your 'The Mind of Watercolor" videos today. Watched a few and tried the titmouse drawing. I am beginning watercolor painting and love it. Lots to learn. So glad you are posting such awesome videos. I will learn a lot, I am sure. Great help!
This is it man! This is the kind of stuff I want to do with my art. Ink drawings with a splash of watercolor. This is kind of the look I want my art to have. I'm so glad I've found this video. I feel like I've just heard my calling or something. Yeah, this is it.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom of watercolor! I drew this bird and colored with colored pencil (since I drew on cheap drawing paper) and I was surprised at how well I did (I'll try a watercolor version soon)! I'm okay at following along and drawing, but when I observe I get things out of proportion. I'm following several watercolorists so hopefully something will click in my eye to hand soon! I love your style and how you talk in a rather relaxed consistent pace compared to others I've watched. Thanks again!
I am a huge fan of sketch marks and mixing meia to get there. I have an inexpensive permanent ink 9 pack from Ama that I think is super for beginners! I'd feel incomplete without it. Another beautiful painting. I am disabled(chronic pain) so I will often watch you for hours.
Thank you for the tutorials! They are beautiful and inspiring. I'm illustrating my own children's book with water color pencils but love the other techniques you use.
I absolutely love this. Birds are always a lovely subject and the treatment here is just wonderful. I must have a go at this. Thanks Steve, please do some more of these. :)
This is so gorgeous! You didn't spend more than 45 minutes because you are a professional with years of experience, knowledge practice - and it shows in your work.
Thank you! I've finally discovered my favorite watercolor technique! I like to make detailed drawings and I'm not great with allowing watercolor to run wild so this is a perfect combination. Thanks💗
I've done some ink and watercolor wash drawings lately . I really like it. It kinda clicks with me, the quickness of it, how one gets away with very loose coloring when you made a thight ink drawing. Very nice video, great channel.
I know that you must get tired of me saying the same thing about your artwork but it is just so beautiful to me. Thankyou for sharing and giving us tips along the way. I know how hard it is to be loose in your drawings. That is what I am striving for right now and it is difficult for me to do it. It is so easy to get caught up in the realism of the subject. Again thankyou and have a wonderful day.
Jan Shamer Very kind Jan. NEVER get tired of hearing positive comments from great fans like you. It is difficult to stay loose for sure but its fun to push in that direction.
I started out with pen and ink and colored ink washes, which, drew me into watercolor art. Ha, ha,.... get it? "drew" me into watercolor.... Anyway, love the birds! Keep doing it!
I'm really drawn to this way technique! I will definitely follow your board about this on Pinterest. Do you have info on how to do those expressive lines? If not would you consider doing a video on it?
This weekend, I tried my first pen and ink wash (before watching your video). I did the opposite of how you did yours. I painted forget-me-not flowers and then inked over what I had painted. I wanted the style to be loose and I know when I ink first, I can't stop myself from coloring inside the lines completely. I'd like to try it again with the ink pen brush you used. I always try your techniques after watching your videos and I'm having an absolute blast! It's been very satisfying to actual see my improvement in painting. Thanks so much for all your videos!
Lynette T Yes, I've seen the paint first, ink last technique a few times and its a good way to go also. It can definitely help with the looseness as you said if you are comfortable with it. Thanks for watching!
I absolutely love your work & your videos! I always carry a Moleskine sketchbook or two, Micron pens, a waterbrush, and my little handmade palette book of colors for impromptu sketching. I'm going to find that brushpen--love the line variation! Thanks for sharing the joy Steve!
Steve, it’s hard to believe I just recently discovered your channel! So glad I did; thank you for your wonderful teaching methods and sharing your talent. Also, RTR!
Enjoyed watching this and hearing your thoughts about the techniques….I personally like the amount of paint you used…I will have to try it. I don’t really care for the style where they leave whole areas without paint as it looks unfinished to me, but I do like the loose look.
LOVE this.....will have to try.....you are such a ***phenomenal** teacher. Maybe this will help me get over my "fear" of watercolor!!! As always, you are a blessing Steve!!
I'm a beginner with watercolor. I just love how it is though I end up trying to hard and it's a problem. but your videos are helping me, very easy to understand! I love love your videos. thank you so much!
Wow! I just stumbled upon your channel while looking at Zentangles that were water colored. Can I just say it was heaven sent. I love your videos and simple friend to friend approach of demonstrating. I always wanted to be an illustrator but was always told that I couldn't make a living as an artist. Boy I should have ignored my elders. I love the fact that you were an illustrator by trade and now you struggle with control. I have a tendency to over work my watercoloring until it looks like an acrylic painting. I really love the comment about Breatrix Potter. Your work is so similar to hers, light and airy. Well, so I say thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing these videos. I watched all of them at once. I have subscribed, followed and liked all of your links.😘
Susan Gillespie Thanks for the kind, encouraging words. We are what we are and all our experiences bring something to the table. Good or bad. And...I love talking with people who share a love of this medium.
Loved this demo of ink & watercolor wash! Going to try my hand at rendering a Scrub Jay on a branch. Have painted an old house that is a B&B in the California Central Coast. Used Pigma Microns and Sennelier watercolors. Turned out really nice for a beginner! Thanks for all your great videos.
Yes I do like this technique, I want to paints birthday cards for my friends and this is ideal. I will try the birds specially for Xmas time, and then carry on from there. Thank you for sharing.
I do so love your videos... this one in particular struck me and I am going to need to watch it again... (an yet again i expect) ... I am struggling with the whole "line and wash" "ink and wash" thing.. I start out fine.. but i just can NOT help myself and end up painting more than I had intended to. Old habits die hard.... Now, they turn out fine.. and I am mostly happy with the pieces.. but my goal....... *sigh* is to do as you illustrate in this video.. I love the "look" produced in a line and wash technique.. the less is more philosophy...... so...... onward and upward as they say... Who thought it could be so difficult to do less? ........... anyway.. thanks again.. great video... (love them all by the way) cheers!! )
Loved this video! The titmouse is one of my favorite birds, along with the chickadee. Thanks so much for demonstrating them with your watercolor paintings! Now I need to get one of those pens...
Really appreciate this video! I constantly fight against my urge to overwork the color in pen & wash pieces or treating them like a coloring book. Thanks for the instruction.
Love the titmouse. Think he/she is my favorite at the feeder. And we have some spectacular birds. Love this technique, Steve. Thanks for sharing. And I'll look for you on pinterest.

Love the transparency of painting

tillygirl56 Oh, by the way, check out Beatrice Potter's books from her garden, you would love her ink and wash inspiration. Actually, you are spot on.
tillygirl56 Thank you! Exactly why it appealed to me.

I'm beginning to explore pen and watercolor wash. Excellent introduction. I liked seeing the contrast between the Pentel brush and Micron Pen.

Hi. At the ripe old age of 76 I have started using watercolour pencils to create paintings but this looks like so much fun. I love your work and if I can find the pens I need in South Africa I will give this method a try. Love to Reece. Elizabeth
+Elizabeth Harris You should try it. Old fashion dip pens with india ink also work fine for this and may be easier to find. Thanks!
