Really enjoyed this. As a kid and teen I always had a sketchbook and loved to draw. Adulthood and life got me away from that. I'm now 49 and have noticed I am missing that creativity in my life and thought adding watercolors to drawings could be cool. Thanks for the great video.
Daniel Ilievski it is awful comment to do. When you grow up you will understand sometimes responsibilities takes us for what you have to do and forgot it the way have some fun too. We deserve it.
Hi there! OMG! I so excited! During the plandemic I taught myself how to watercolor by watching video on YT. Watercolor was ALWAYS my evil nemesis. The only medium I didn't understand because of my dyslexia. Then I bought these TOMBO Ink pens, made in Thailand. I didn't knw what to do with them. Ive even forgotten how to draw. The other day I started drawing. Theses pens are a trip! Then I added my watercolor. When everything dried the result was incredible! Now I am addicted! I found you.. and have fallen in love! Thank you so much for being here!! I went to you website too! WOW!!You are amazing! Thank you thank you thank you! xoxo
0:00 to 1:30 ...as if I didn't respect and like you enough. I'm really glad your channel has gone so well. You really seem like a great person and I'm proud to support you and your art.
Thankful for TH-cam folks like you. I’m 51 and without the tutorials from everyone I would still be light years behind. Wish this was around when I was a child. Thank you for sharing.
You are so amazing! I'm shocked to hear that you're self taught! You do indeed have a gift. Thank you for sharing it with us. I'm learning so much from you!
I am also trying to teach myself - you are an inspiration VERY GOOD ARTIST - and a GOOD teacher - thank you for helping me to develop my skill as much as I can -
thank you, I've watched a bunch of your videos and finally had a breakthrough moment today where I finally feel like I "got" watercolors! I used to only use gouache in an opaque fashion, so the idea of transparent layers was daunting for me. But your videos and language about layers really helped, you are a wonderful teacher and artist!!
Thank you so much not only for sharing your talent but your reassurance as you speak makes it easier for those of us who are still intimidated by art to listen and learn.
Sir, you are the best teacher on the web as far as I'm concerned. I've been watching many of your tutorials for the past few days and barely drawing just because I was enjoying your teaching ways so much. As a teacher myself, for more than 25 years, and always a pupil, I have to acknowledge a master of the trade when I see him and you are one. Thanks so much for your generosity. I will be basing my next months of learning to draw on your lessons. I feel I have found a treasure. And of course, if you ever want to learn maths, I'm your man!
And yet another super tutorial on flowers!!! The one I was waiting for so long!!! I was about to abandon water color because I sucked at it. It always look liked like gouache in the end. But now you give me the courage to try it again in a different ways. And it was the same with my design. I was about to give up but since I began to watch your tutorial... it is hard to explain. It is like listening to you help me dig down my buried talents that were 6 feet under the ground. So thank you again for your excellent work and also to be the best teacher of all time. Thank!!! :) Sim
Simonomis Legare No problem at all. But dont give up! I'll do more videos that will give more tips on the process. Try starting light and ending light, its easy to overwork watercolor
***** Ok so you sugest me to start as light as possible and finish it ligth also! I`ll try this the next time I use watercollor. And we'll see. And yes , I will be exited to see you show us another video that explain the process of watercolor. Thank you then!!! :)
you can literally do everything with watercolor, except using a lot of layers i guess since its not really thick and opaque. just use less water and learn how to fade it out and control it
Ozterkvlt Well for sure I was not using to good technique at all. But since I know this, now I can move on. And learn different approach from others. Thanks :)
That was so amazing! I agree with your "idea" for watercolor, the beauty of it is when there is "no control". Just let the watercolor flow naturally. Beautiful art.
I'm just trying to learn how to watercolor and your tutorial has really helped me. I had no idea that even used a pen with your paint. I have learned something already and I can't wait to watch more of your videos. Plus you seem so laid back it makes it easier for me to follow. Thanks again!
I remember viewing this vid. I love the way you draw you bring the lines and etching together to form something, hard to describe how I see it. Anyway, the colors and all came out beautiful, I could watch you all day. Thank you for sharing!!!
Your videos are so awesome Alphonso ! Never stop doing them ! I am in no doubt this is the best resources for drawing/pen & ink techniques that I have found. Thanks for everything !
These two videos are great. I really appreciate you making them. The tips of being less aggressive with your ink lines for watercolor was definitely helpful. Thanks!
"Beautiful..." I too am self-taught... and I agree with you about not having a heavy hand on the "Ink" (I still use India Ink and a cheap nib) OLD SCHOOL ... LOL... and I thought I was the only one to "layer" the colors... You do a Great Job... Love your tutorials... ;)
I love what you said about watercolor being a "fragile" medium requiring a light touch. So true! Your flowers are beautiful! I'm a beginner, and hope to someday get to this skill level. You're amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
I just love what I've seen so far. Been painting about 5 years and some of my stuff turns out really nice, but not so good on others. Love your use of ink and watercolor. I think it adds a lovely dimension to it. Look forward to seeing your other videos!
Watercolor is my favorite medium, but my weakest. I love it for the challenging aspect of controlling the color and water mixture. I tend to struggle on it when it comes to being patient, waiting for something to dry or layering if I'm in a rushing mood, or if I'm trying to do a wet-on-wet technique and I don't use the water spray bottle in time and allow parts to dry. I got a Winsor & Newton watercolor pocket set too, and I love it. I have cheaper quality as well, in case I won't to try something new.
Thanks for showing us your art and process! Seeing your skills in action helped me understand that I'm not pushing value and contrast enough in my own paintings. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Alfonso. Man, you make it look so easy. I've been watching how people watercolor for years. I've come to the conclusion either you got it or you don't. I don't. But I keep trying. Mahalo.
I upgraded my watercolor pencils to good ones from beginner, and did the lily tutorial along with you. I was especially keen to learn this the ink sketching and shading techniques for flowers. You have a distinct way of making the initial layout so darned easy to grasp that by the time you get to the details they are almost afterthoughts. Once I started laying in color with the new pencils holy smokes did the flower pop! It is such a pleasure learning from you, Alphonso. Keep up the great work!
Finally, someone that is actually a great teacher for beginners, on youtube. I have rarely commented on videos, over the years and can count them on 1 hand, yours is one of those that have moved me to do so. I'm impressed on how you break down the steps and give us crucial tips on things, since I am a newbie you helped me alot. You actually keep the attention audience with your sonant voice. I am a fan now, keep up the great work.
Thank you so much! I didn't have anyone who can teach me to paint (somehow, none of the art teachers in my school draw or paint -they're more on the "history of art" teacher, if you know what I mean. They can't draw). Nobody around me can draw (or have time to sit down and draw with me), and parents didn't allow me to go to art school or take art/painting course either, so I was really on my own, and it was a really lonely world. It really is a blessing that now we have the internet and infrastructure supporting it. Watching your videos motivates me to take another try on drawing and watercolor (I really suck at it, and wish I have someone who can show me how to use it properly). Thank you for laying it down so clearly, and simply. I will continue watching your videos and listening to your explanations. They really are the best! Like having a brother who teaches me to draw and paint. Thank you. I have a 2 year old daughter. She's been my motivation as well. One day, I will show her your video too!
lisa gorrin practice makes perfect, just keep practicing on what you lack perfection in drawing and you will improve in your technique. By the way, I think your cute.😉
Stunning outcome Alphonso and thank you for taking the time to share. I particularly liked the way you explained breaking the line, something I've not done in my pen work before. I slavishly follow each line!!!! Pen and wash is a "loose" and lovely way to paint (I also use acrylic paint and acrylic ink) and your expression adds so much to the sense of fluidity and delicate nature of flowers. Getting ready to use your insights in my art class on Thursday where I hope to surprise my teacher. Thanks again
This is great, the way the water flows and falls unpredictably is just gorgeous. I love the feel, it's an amazing form of illustration possibly and as an piece of art is fantastic. I love using water colours, I don't use them as much as I want to but this will push me to do so. Though, I currently have a clothing design project aimed (16 - 25) for a clothing store under the tittle "Born Wild", but I don't have anything in mind yet, no fixed ideas whatsoever but the way you explained this and the outcome of the way the colours and the drawing look just may give me a great leap and now its up to the design that reflects the title. (Don't know if I'm supposed to talk about it, oh well... Oops.) I've been a little ill so I've been laying off the PC but man, it's great to see your tutorials. It was awesomely done!
Alphonso, your drawings and paintings are beautiful and you have a lovely, peaceful way of presenting your demonstrations. I am definitely going to have a go at painting some flowers like these.😊
You're videos are absolutely brilliant and I've learnt so much already! I don't know if you take requests for topics but I thought there's no harm in asking :) Would you be able to do a video on materials and tools? I often wonder when I'm watching your videos what grade of pencil you're using, what width of pen nib or what type of paper you're using. You've mentioned a few times that it's important to know the limitations of your chosen pens, pencils and papers, and I thought it would be great if you could let us know when you'd definitely not use certain pens, pencils and papers too. What would you say the essential travel pack for an "urban" sketcher should contain? No worries at all if you can't. The videos are invaluable and it's great you find the time to make them! Really looking forward to your book :) Thank you!
Inuka Jayasekera Thanks and no worries at all. I did start a materials video. Part 1 is here th-cam.com/video/9srD5CxeOWU/w-d-xo.html . I will eventually discuss paper and on to pencil as well. However I don't advise being to extravagant with supplies at all. Simpler is better, especially in the beginning. For outdoor sketching you really just need simple stuff. I'll discuss that in that series as well. But for know this can include a soft lead pencil (perhaps HB-2B, eraser, a small ruler (6") if you think you need it, pen (ball point, roller ball, drawing pen, brush pen, etc), small sketchbook, portable watercolor set.
***** Oh! I'm sorry, I missed the ink pens video. I'm fairly new to your channel and have a lot of catching up to do! :) Loving everything so far and so grateful you make the time to do the videos and reply!
so truee watercolours are fragile and allowing the to run definitely give your art work life!! you are one amazing teacher!!! i recently got to ur profile and i got soooooo much to learn!!! absolutely loveeeeeeeee your work and your way of teaching! thankyou!
Your videos are great! I have done art for many years, but you are clarifying many techniques, helping me to be a better artist and teacher. Thank you!
You have such a nice voice; very calm and reassuring. You are an excellent teacher and I appreciate your kind efforts in helping us learn. Thanks so much! Please watch: geniusthemovie.com and please share this very important message.
Golly Alphonso, I love the way you demonstrate your drawings...I've been painting for years but never could really draw....I think now I may learn to draw, thanks to you!! Blessings to you...
Alphonso, this is truly a beautiful and inspiring combination for me. You break your lessons down into their beginnings, middles, and ends so well. I follow all your videos. Thanks, Paula Bendall
Thank you so much. I know your channel since few years. I came back now, and your tutorials are there 😍 I'm gonna do some piece of art for my mum for Christmas. Beautiful and zero waste 🎉
Aside from being an absolutely brilliant artist, you are extremely humble, respectable and honest. This video was a great pleasure to watch - keep up the good work!
Thank you Alphonso! thank god for the internet! I am self taught too...but the internet has helped me go so far, its amazing the artists u find on line! Your art lessons r fantastic! Well appreciated!
Thank you for the water color tips. I originally wanted to learn ink and wash. But knew I had to learn the ink part first. So glad you are teaching the wash part too now. Thank you again!!
Thank you for hitting the beginner tips before you delved in. This video is very helpful! I usually color with marker but I find the free-flowing nature of watercolor very beautiful and have been thinking of trying it out.
Thank you so much for your calm and therapeutic approach to teaching, I have learned more in the first few minutes than I have ever been taught before :)
Clicked video... Watched... Subscibed... Been looking for something like this for so long, I love watercolor with all my heart. Thanks for the great video..
Thank you for your tutorials. I’m trying to teach myself to be an artist, again. I followed along with this and so enjoyed being able to finish something. I used Apache Sunset, Red and Black fountain pen ink. Sennelier watercolor. Great instructions.
I just found your channel. You explain things so well. It's easy to understand. You inspire with "down to earth," explanations of what you are doing and why. Thank you.
Ordering your book! Thank you for sharing and being so open with your talents...Absolutely love your kind, gentle, caring manner and teaching techniques! Blessed Be ~ G
What a gifted teacher!! I have had two college drawing courses and numerous hobby courses and you are just superb. I picked up so much from this short video. Thanks!! bill
this is the first video I'm watching of yours and I can totally sense the connection and understanding you have with this medium. Great video, thank you!
Alfonzo...finally got your first one pen & ink book. It is so awesome and this 78 year old is a happy camper for sure.. Hope to get 2nd book soon. Thanks for all you do. V. Stamps
I have always done pointillism in house portraits, etc. I am so impressed with your lesson and it encourages me to try this with watercolor. You are very patient and you explain very well. Thank you so much and God Bless!
Hi I have a kind of whimsical greeting card line & paint with acrylics but just became interested in watercolors. Thank you! I just came on to ask about micron pens & water colors & almost bought a course before I found you!!!! What an amazing artist AND teacher you are! Soooo useful!
Thank you for your inspiration and thoughtful instruction. Your channel is exactly what I've been looking for. You are a very talented artist and teacher. Gods blessing to you! .......Caroline
Thank you. Six years later this video is still heading home for people inspiring people and educating people thank you so much

Felt the same way about using watercolour. It just looks like crap w/o any knowledge or training on how to use them.

Alphonso Dunn: By chance, are you related to Garfield Dunn?
Also can you slow down the speed to 2x, so we can see the step by step of your drawings and paintings??
Your videos are so awesome Alphonso ! Never stop doing them ! I am in no doubt this is the best resources for drawing/pen & ink techniques that I have found. Thanks for everything !

thank you. Watching you tutorials gives one a better understanding of painting, from what we can learn from books alone.
Fred Kroesche glad it helped :-)
I LOVE YOUR TUTORIALS !! also i love how you still interact with everyone even though youre so huge now
Dans Vlogs always! :-)

Sandy K thanks so much and I appreciate the support.
So gorgeous! It is so helpful to watch how you started out light and then added colors.
Thanks : )
Watercolor is my favorite medium, but my weakest. I love it for the challenging aspect of controlling the color and water mixture. I tend to struggle on it when it comes to being patient, waiting for something to dry or layering if I'm in a rushing mood, or if I'm trying to do a wet-on-wet technique and I don't use the water spray bottle in time and allow parts to dry. I got a Winsor & Newton watercolor pocket set too, and I love it. I have cheaper quality as well, in case I won't to try something new.
Andrew Inman Just keep at it, your patience will develop. Do what I do work on multiple parts simultaneously.
Thanks for showing us your art and process! Seeing your skills in action helped me understand that I'm not pushing value and contrast enough in my own paintings. Keep up the great work!

Nope. I disagree lol. It can be learned, i'ts just a tricky medium but it can be learned
I add way too much color. Very frustrating. Drew some anthuriums yesterday, then added too much paint.
I upgraded my watercolor pencils to good ones from beginner, and did the lily tutorial along with you. I was especially keen to learn this the ink sketching and shading techniques for flowers.
