    Really enjoy all your reviews, you give solid advice, and do a great job discussing the pros and cons of using specific art materials. You're my favorite TH-cam guide. I recently picked up the 12-color set of these, for $27.00 on Amazon, the packaging was damaged, but the markers are fine, and work great. The watercolor markers are quite handy getting ideas down in the sketchbook, and as you stated, really nice medium for ink-line washes. With all the cuts to the Arts and Music programs throughout the US, I'm thankful that there are good people here on the internet, who enjoy and promote art. We need Art in our lives, it's important to create art.

    Finally a properly instructive video on how to use these markers. A shame I came to it seven years after it was posted. I have a 40 year graphic design career behind me and in those early years I used professional markers (Magic Markers and Letraset Pantone) to produce highly finished client visuals. Fast forward to now and I'm producing watercolour prints through my Etsy shop using W&N traditional watercolour paints. Then I thought how much less hassle it would be to make plein air studies for the finished paintings with the convenience of markers. I will always use paint in the studio. I don't know why this connection had eluded me for so many years! My approach is probably to use palleting for those background washes with a brush but the dedicated paper seems a really good match. I already have a few of the markers in primaries for mixing. The W&N paper will be the next purchase. Many thanks!

    Hi. There are a wide number of mediums available today for water colourists and the advertisers make them desirable. Point being that you can spend money on products which don't get fully utilised. This video,and others you have made show some of the great possibilities open to their usage, so thank you for you're thoughtful and thought provoking videos.

      Graham Heywood Thanks! You've pointed out a main reason I do reviews. Getting the most from their supplies. Also, not every art material is for EVERY artist. Informed buying decisions are always better. I'm just as happy for someone to learn through my videos what NOT to buy.

    It was great to see you really testing ( pushing as you say) this unfamiliar medium. I was amazed that you could use so many standard/ typical watercolour techniques. You also provided a very honest final summary of the product and the possibilites and limitations of it. Thanks.

    Hi, Steve -- I have tried watercolor in the past (LONG before there was such a thing as You Tube) and got so frustrated because I didn't know what I was doing. I put everything away and let it age like the finest wine. Well, now that I have found your You Tube channel and a few others, I am ready to drink deeply from that wine! I always said I needed someone to show me how, but I live in a rural area and could never get to a watercolor class. Besides, I like a certain style, and one never knows exactly what a particular instructor's style is going to be.
    Thank the Lord for You Tube! I can see how things are done and I am enjoying playing with watercolors again. I am about to sign up for an online class with Anna Mason--just waiting for the free one to show up so I can be sure that it's for me.
    I found your channel just today and am enjoying it immensely. I really like your style and I LOVE the Bible verses at the end!

    Nice one Steve! And to think you like Star Wars and drafting pencils as well. I have used those draftmatic pencils since back in my undergrad days in engineering school. I love those things. I broke down and bought a Rotring 600, another fine pencil if you ever have 30 bucks burning a hole in your pocket haha. You have about convinced me to go get some of these markers. My son especially, he is 8, and says he thinks they'd be a good addition to "our" art supplies. Thanks for your videos as always. I do enjoy and look forward to them!

    I love your paintings with birds, really love all your paints. I just love watching you paint birds. I've so much from you, thanks. At my gift shop, which is an old house that's been redone on the inside for a gift shop. There was a kitchen in of, obviously, but all is gone except the kitchen sink & counters, anyway above the sink is a lovely double window & a pretty good size tree there. We have a very young red cardinal that is constantly hitting the window. He goes from the tree hits the window back to the tree, over & over. I put a large fake cardinal in the window the 2 of them. Just made it worse. (I do floral arrangements & use the birds for the arrangements) He's now been doing that for over 2 years. I was afraid he'd get some kind of concussion doing it because he really hit that window hard. I did get some pictures of him but he just to fast. I know he thinks there's another cardinal there from his reflection but I can't cover up the window I need the light. Now it's been 3 yrs & he still doing it. Silly bird❣️ I just thought you'd enjoy that story. Sorry it's so long. I wish you'd do a pair, male & female Cardinal. They are so beautiful. Thank you for all the great tutorials you share!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get bird strikes on our front living room window frequently and its often a cardinal. Not sure why them and not other birds. Maybe because they're large and aren't as agile. Small birds rarely hit the window. Had a cardinal unconscious on the front porch for almost a half hour once. I though it was going to die. We have a bird feeder 20 feet from the front porch. Farther than what they recommend for minimum distance. Difficult to figure out what to do. We also get a great crested flycatcher every spring that attacks its reflection in an upper story window. Very funny, and annoying.

      The Mind of Watercolor It is funny but I feel bad they do it. You would think it would give them some brain damage. Silly birds! They are a wonderful bird to watch in the gloom of winter, or when snow is on the ground... I'm happy to hear I'm not got the only crazy cardinal that wants to fight his reflection 😜😀

    I recall advise that one needs to prioritize equipment before strarting: paper, brushes then last, brushes - can you expand

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean exactly but if I'm guessing you're referring to quality. It has been said that you should prioritize the quality of your supplies and what you spend your money on. Paper is the most important so get the best which is 100% cotton paper. It's the most important for getting good results. Paint is second, get the best you can afford. Fewer colors of higher quality are much preferred over lots of colors of lower quality. Brushes can be the lowest priority for quality. There are many watercolor rated brushes that are inexpensive and will suffice very well.

      I think it would be awesome if an atheist saying about common sense was posted at the end, but neither has anything to do with watercolor. But I would really prefer that people not proselytize either way when we're dealing with something totally unrelated.
      It doesn't keep me from enjoying these excellent presentations, and I don't bother reading things that irk me.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't engage you on this originally but now I will. Posting a verse from the Bible is not proselytizing. I think you should look up the meaning of the word. This is my channel and my content. I don't charge a dime for any of it. The ads are far more intrusive than any verse I post which comes at the end and interrupts nobody. Your original comment, not to mention your follow up, is just so totally unnecessary and feels like its meant to start a debate (which it won't, not here).

All I want to do is enjoy your excellent channel, and I apologize that my reply to Sara came off as a second stab at the issue.

    I had a question about the marker tips. I am watching you apply the different colors directly on top of one another. Have you noticed any bleed back onto the marker tips or were you waiting for the paper to be completely dry between color applications? Is there color mixing on the tip of the markers?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahnriel Mann In the video I was applying additional colors to a dried surface. But I've also done it wet. On wet color it will bleed back into the tip a little but its not severe. In my experience with them so far, painting out a few strokes on scrap paper will bring back the full original color.

Oh also I went back and with the few markers I got several years ago started to play with them it getting great rewetting and results (except for mid blue) on Legion 100% cotton multi media paper and hot press wc paper.--just sharing

      I confess I don't use them regularly. Just habit mostly and forgetting to pull them out. I like both brands but probably the Albrecht Dürers just a bit more.

    I looked up watercolour markers form W&N since you interested me. There are W&N pigment markers, or their pro markers and also blending markers.; which exactly were you using?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Watercolor. Their other pigment markers are permanent and solvent based.

    That was great! I love your demos... & the soft music too is just right! ... one question with the watercolour markers... can they be refilled?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Officially no, W&N doesn't offer any refill color. Unofficially, I think some people have tried it with mixed success. The tips do come off and there is a sort of sponge reservoir. You'll need a liquid based, concentrated watercolor and eyedropper to refill it with. Something like Dr. Martins Hydrus. I can't personally attest to the success of it, but theoretically it seems possible.

    Just out of curiosity, what was the small brush you were using to lift the paint? Was that just a cheap old scrubby brush or did you buy a specific brush for that purpose? Also, how was painting in larger areas with the markers? I can see some streaking with the blue, but it looks like most other color dissolved fairly evenly.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Shannon Poehlman Its a small hogs bristle brush that I use for gentle lifting. I did buy it specifically for that purpose. Normally those are used for oil painting or acrylics. I have a video on my various lifting techniques if you haven't seen it yet I talk about this brush a little and various other lifting techniques. th-cam.com/video/441zE7tETQs/w-d-xo.html

    Just wondering if the W & N watercolor markers can be reactivated with water when they have dried on paper for a longer period of time (1 week or 1 month or more) equally as well as when they have first been applied. Thank you. In either case, after seeing this demo I think I will have to give these markers a go. :)

    Hiya,
    How are the markers 9 months on? Are they refillable at all? How long do they last?
    If you put a line or patch of colour down on a vertical easle do the colours run like paint would normally? ...or only if you add water to blend?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +theartyone I haven't had to refill one, I did have to reclaim one that was dryish. It took a few attempts but finally came back full strength just by putting in a few drops of water on the dry side of the barrel. I have plans to make another marker video soon. I'm finding they are a better supplementary tool than using as the primary painting medium. They are great journal sketching especially for ink and wash. They also are a great way to pop in low light details in a standard painting. Still experimenting though.

      The Mind of Watercolor
      Thanks for the feedback. I was wondering if they'd be good for colouring on the spot caricatures at festivals, etc ...there's the fact paint has to dry though. Markers can cost a lot if you need to refill them or replace them.
      I wonder if these watercolour markers have a chuck of watercolour inside them and just adding water will keep them going for ages (like using pans or tubes of watercolour). I'd love to open one up.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +theartyone The barrel ends come off and there is just a fat sort of wick/sponge inside. So they must use a concentrated fluid WC like Dr. Marten's Hydrus. My thought was if they ever go dry I would try refilling with Dr. Marten's.

    Hi , Do those markers blend well on canson watercolor paper 140?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tried them on Canson. They tend to stain on most papers and not fully rewet on anything but their special marker watercolor paper which, unfortunately is a drawback. But I like them for touch ups to standard watercolors or coloring ink and wash.

    Wonderful job you do, with all mediums in my option... Very nice work you do indeed...
    When working with pen and watercolor, what kind of pen/pencil is good to use if I'm sketching n such while away on holiday? I'd be interested in finding something that would be permanent so that the watercolor does not make the pen bleed. I'm giving sketching a first try while in Sedona for Mother's Day visiting with Mom-n-Law, so I thought I'd put together a travel kit to play with when I'm out in nature. Now that I've seen this great video, I'm lacking a few supplies like a pen/pencil of some sort. For sure I'm bringing a little palette of watercolor as yesterday I purchased some tubes of M. Graham. They were on sale at almost half off so I hope I grabbed the best colors to get started. Ultramarine Blue, Quinacrindone Red, Hansa Yellow Deep, Olive Green. I received Indian Yellow for free... for purchasing three 15ml tubes. I can't find the Silver, Black Velvet brushes so I've have a few Princeton & Cotman to get started.
    I truly enjoy your videos and look forward to being seated in my soon to be, place to create. My studio project to coming along to being finished very soon.
    Warm regards,
    Karla

      Karla Smith Good choices on the paints. For a pen try the Pigma Microns. They won't wet or smear when dry. For a pencil, on location I prefer a mechanical pencil so I don't have to bring a sharpener into the field. Thanks for the comments and for watching!

    Thank you for this. I am curious: it has been two years -- do you still find yourself reaching for these or are they wasting away in the drawer? I don't think we have seen any other videos since these first two ones using them, but more interesting if you use them for your own work?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, kind of wasting away honestly. Not because i don't like them or they aren't usable but mostly I just forget to pull them out or don't have the right project for them. Markers are not my go to medium in general. Also because I've reviewed so many other products and paint since. I've really wanted to do another video or two at least on these markers. Great reminder. I have used them a few times for deep value touch ups on nearly finished paintings. That may make a good angle for a video.
