I’m health compromised. Been locked in my home. Modeling keeps me sane! Your my favorite molder on TH-cam. Building models takes me back to childhood. And NOBODY has more fun building than you! Keep modeling everyone.....
Constantly going back to some of these older videos, I haven’t built models since before I moved when I was 15 so probably 13ish got back into it after 5 years of being settled in the new state, just built a riviera and a jeep honcho and really wish I would’ve watched these before I started building my stash 😂 seriously! You have the best tips and tricks that no one else mentions or even thinks to implement, keep the awesome sauce you been working with cause it’s a winning formula
I LOOOOOOVE IT! Exactly what I am trying to do with my 34' Ford Slammer! I really appreciate your sharing and tips to get me started. As a kid I(5-11 yrs old) made tons of models(never painted). I'm now 67 and wanting to capture this hobby from my past, I bought 6 models and they're just waiting to be put together. You have definitely encouraged me to start my journey. Thank you so much!
I’ve got to thank you for all your great videos and tips. I used to build as a teenager before I started working full time. Now that I’m retired I’ve started again. Funny I still have some Testors paint 15 cents Testors paint and it’s still good. Built this same kit in purple and it came out great. Thanks to you I’ve added a green cutting mat, gel pens, super glue and indirectly an idea for wood blocks to hold my alligator clip/ bamboo skewers for paint. I missed the video on stripping paint but I’ve used auto brake fluid before to strip a bad paint job. Thanks again.
Great build!!! I grew up in New Jersey and a lot of guys I knew either raced homegrown stock cars (Wall Township) or 1/4 mile runs (Englishtown) in their supercharged/turboed and tuned late model Stangs and Firebirds/Camaros. Good memories. Stopping by the airport for aviation fuel prior to racing, lol. What a beautiful purple that fuel was. Thanks for the short tutorial.
Appreciate you showing goofs as well as successes ( hood paint issue). Man this looks like a fun kit. This one just moved to the top of my list of wanna gits
Cracking job, looks fantastic, just ordered one of these for the Christmas holidays, looks like a great kit, love your build so much i think i'll copy the lime green paint and weathering, will probably do the wheels and cage white though, will also add some wiring to the motor. Greetings from Scotland.
That kit is actually a replica of a Northeast asphalt modified from the mid ‘70s to the early ‘80s. Great build! MPC also released a Ford Pinto, a ‘34 Ford coupe and a ‘36 Chevy coupe
One thing that will really set these models off which you probably already know but when i was modeling I just did race cars, I alway's used yellow sewing thread and used them for the spark plug wire's. Keep up the good work, just subscribed.
Thats cool i remember islip speedway and Freeport raceway in the 70s long gone here on long island ny nice job on all the models you do .you make it look easy Tom ny
You killed again Chris, another excellent build and video with valuable weathering tips! I love it!! Now on to the 70's "Patty Wagon", I can't wait to see what you do with that!!!
Looks great, nice job! I'm pretty sure this is the kit I built about (ahem) 40 years ago. It was the only one I entered in any model contests and I got 1st in whatever class it was. I think I need to buy one & build it again. Keep up the cool videos!
That is a really badass kit and build. I love when you go into detail on weathering. I still a novice builder technically as I’ve never done the weathering thing before. I build big rigs and am currently building the recently reissued Freightliner cabover as a CF Daycab. If you’ve ever seen one of those back in the day, they were anything but clean. I’m still trying to get the whole weathering and dirtying thing down. I’ve learned a lot here though.
Awesome Chris! That turned out amazing! And once you get the other version of this kit. you should put some dents in that one!! Because athey tenant to hit each other a lot. I should know because I have a local race track here for those!!! :)
I don't know why MPC put dirt/groozed tires in this kit as the rat trap Vega was pavement race car also the Lakewood bellhousing decal(lower rear 1/4s is upside down. excellent build and video you did a great job building and weathering this kit! don't worry to much on the tires as AMT put slicks in the east coast dirt modified kits
Turned out very nice. I am really happy these new (re) releases come with painted or pad printed lettering on the tires and I wish that they would start selling these in tire and wheel kits. I always hated trying to paint those! I prefer kits like this where things are a bit simpler and just go together nice and not having separate door panels and roofs and just things that just complicate the project and not quite fit right in the end. The choice of Key Lime works great for a race car.
Decent build man! Stinks messin’ up on the paint, though! I don’t use cleaner or paint stripper, so if the paint gets all screwy I have to use sand paper to remove the paint! Sometimes works quicker and cleaner, but still a hassle!
You can get the 74 Vega. there's an AMT kit and a Motormax diecast available in 1/25. I've been trying to get a factory 71 vega for some time. there's a promo available, but they usually go past $100.
I'm personnally not into those type of car. Maybe 'cuz we don't have much of those here in Canada. But you really did something neat with this one. I like the color, the weathering and so on. That said, it would be SO nice to get a re-issue MPC '72 Vega (the daily driver version one).
Another great build. I’ve been wanting to ask you. What do you do with all the kits that you build? Do you have a display showing off all your great work? Maybe you have children or grandchildren you give them too. Do you ever enter any local hobby shop model contests? Or any online model contests? Just wondering. Thank for all the videos, I’ve learned so much from all of them.
Hi Joe, thanks! I store my favorite ones in glass cabinets. I give others away if friends or family like the subject. The rest are stored nicely in boxes and stacked in the shop. I don't do the contest stuff for my own models. Too many chiefs and not enough indians complaining about other people's work. Being critical of other's work or having some guy nit pick my work is not for me. I attend shows when I can and love seeing others work especially kids, and I like encouraging people to just have fun and build what they want how they want it.
I’ve been having bad Luck with the 2x rustoleum paint. Comes out like undercoating, In globs. The flat black did it also but it actually looked good on the undercarriage and really looked like undercoating.
Try putting the can in a bowl of warm water for about 10 minutes, to warm up the paint, warm paint seems to spray better. I also seem to have to change out the nozzle, for one that sprays better, even if you keep them clean. Some just never spray right even when new.
Question if I may? You do such great work, I am just wondering why you don't detail the engine with sparkplug wire and such? Maybe show just a little more detail with things like that? I'm just asking man, not in anyway putting down your work, it's awesome!
Hello, I try to review the kit as it is out of the box so that buyers know what to expect. Sometimes I'll add little diorama things but I have to repeat over and over that those items are not included or the model companies get emails asking why this and that wasn't included when they saw it on my review.
Hey Hpiguy, I got a question. I just bought 4 kits and 1 was this VEGA RAT TRAP. I have been on Google & Utube looking for researh photos of a circle track VEGA like this kit but I come up empty. Is this a totally fictitious type of race car ? Maybe Im searching for it by the wrong type ?

Right on!
I can’t wait till summer I can hear the roar of the track from my house on a Friday night I love hearing them motors wide open
Yeah, I'm a long ways away but it echoes off the mountain nearby and can be heard all across my town.
Built this kit before and was glad to see that they was releasing it again. Will be picking it and the pinto kit up when they hit my hobby shop.
Cool, yeah, hoping to get the Pinto and maybe the other two in the set with their old school bodies.
Enjoyed watching the build. I have built most of these releases over the years and like they are available. Again, Thanks
Awesome build for as quick as you build your work is phenomenal love your builds
I’ve got to thank you for all your great videos and tips. I used to build as a teenager before I started working full time. Now that I’m retired I’ve started again. Funny I still have some Testors paint

What a great build! I really like the weathering, it makes it look like a used race car.
Thanks!
Awesome, Dig that Green too!
Great Show, Unreal finish.

Another really nice job - love the key lime color.

Another great looking build Chris. I just found the model king version of this kit at a local hobby shop that's closing. Can't wait to build it.
Sweet, thanks Joe!
Just when i think the last 1 was the best 1 u hit me with another great build real kool build

Excellent kit build it looks really good as it came straight from the race track.
Thank you very much James!
Love the workshop videos. You have given me quite a few ideas. Keep em coming. Awesome stuff.
Thanks Mike!
You killed again Chris, another excellent build and video with valuable weathering tips! I love it!! Now on to the 70's "Patty Wagon", I can't wait to see what you do with that!!!

Looks great... love the old school Saturday night stockers
Thanks!
Cool kit Chris! The weathering looks good. I’m glad you didn’t leave it “clean.”
Thanks Buckner, yeah I've never seen one of these cars go longer than one race without being filthy.
That color is awesome!! Great video
Thank you!
Great review/build. I have the kit and now can’t wait to get it started. Dave
Thanks, enjoy your kit!
Great build review and I appreciate the weathering tips too!

Cool looking kit .... Great detail
Thanks Charles!
Awesome job mate !! Love the weathering
Thanks Gary!
Give us some history on this kit if you can, always appreciate it!
@@hpiguy I'm embarrassed to say I don't know much at all about these dirt track cars lol
Hahahaha, you'll make up for it on the Police Van next weekend. LOL
great weathering tips
Thanks man!
Have you done a video on simulating a vinyl top?
Nope, I have only done that on one kit years ago.
Great videos! Very helpful!!!
Glad you like them!
Very cool kit my friend...It looks fantastic!
Thank you Todd, always!
Nice model, well done, some screen material would look great for the windshield.
Thanks, good idea!
another great build chris .
Thank you!
Finally a good use for a Vega.
LOL
Very cool!! Love the model!!
Thanks for watching and Happy New Year from hpiguys Workshop!
I really like how you do these videos

Love the model & the work you do hpi. Keep up the good work!

You should build a late model or modified! Great videos!
Maybe someone will make a kit and I'll be able to !
Nice build
Thanks Jeff!
Awesome brother keep up the awesome work
Thanks Tom!
These were asphalt modifieds but the finished kit is awesome. The old coupe bodied modifieds raced on both surfaces
Thank you!
do you glue your wheels to the tires if so what glue do you use
You usually don't have to, they fit in the wheels fine. Rubber cement works well if they don't fit right.
I really have to get one of these and the pinto Saturday night short track at it's best
Thanks, me too!
Looks awesome buddy,i like your vids
Thanks Duster!
@@hpiguy do you have a vid on how to distress chrome
What did you use to strip the paint on the hood? I have the same issue.
Thank you!!!!
Super Clean works well.
Thank you! Love your videos!!!
I wish they would release the stock version I had a 74 Vega was a great car to own
Cool!
I had a friend that had a 72 Vega with a Motion Big Block kit. I'd love to build a model of that car!
Ross Egan Jr didn’t they already release a Vega? I remember seeing a Vega repop Kit last time I went to the shop!

I find it kind of unusual this kit came with a 427. A lot of dirt trackers run a small block
Chevy made a 427 SB.
@@ansleyk7977 Chevy never made a 427 small block. The 427 small block a bored and stroked 400 small block
Can you imagine driving a hollowed out Vega with a 427 and a 4 speed. That car would outrun 99.9% of the cars on the road.
How many peace’s does the kit have?

What do you use to strip paint & where do you get it..Been trrying a few things with mixed results.
Super Clean degreaser from Walmart, soaked for a couple days. If that doesn't work I soak it in cheap Dot3 brake fluid.
looks awesome Chris i should post a video of mine that i did nice kit i agree on the cage other ten that sweet kit i just picked up another one
Thanks Jeff!
Do they make a dirt modified I race one on Saturday nights and would love to build one of my car
I do not know. I'd google it and see what's out there, or try Ebay.
kool , thanx ...nice kit
been usin' that same paint...works well , Way ta build 'er ....lookin' good

Do you use different tips on the spray paint cans? The stock ones come out so fast, it’s hard to do a light coat.
As always, enjoying the videos
Hi David, I use the stock nozzles.
You'll learn to use a softer pressing of the nozzle and quick passes for light coats. Just takes practice.
Back up and you'll get a lighter coat. It wastes a lot which is really a shame, but it gets the job done.
Metal Retard will do. Thx
Sweet!!!
Thanks Larry!
No idea if it's based off anything real but it a cool kit, thanks for watching!
Nice
Thank you!
Vega modifies stockcars were big and started in the Northeast. The only place you didn't mention!
Thanks for watching!

I started this kit tonite and noticed some light brown stains at the injection pins. I assume this was mold release agents. So scrubby dub dub
Yup, mold release or the pins were hot.
Do the jim Cushman Plymouth duster short track sportsman
That's a cool kit too.
Can you do one ive got a kit thats not even opened up
I don't own it.
Sounds like a great opportunity for you to crack yours open and do a fun build up!
It wld be neat if amt/mpc made a imca modified race car that way I cld make it look like my dads old one
Sure that would be fun to build.
