I I just received mine after a very long backorder and agree with your assessment. Also I believe they addressed the hardware issue as mine is different. I found it interesting that you considered the weight as a con. I considered it very light weight when compared to other quality racks. For instance the Versahaul weighs in at around 100 lbs as does the high end Black Widow. I can't say enough good things about this rack. It reeks with quality. Great review. Thanks for posting.

I just need a lock on my carrier for peace of mind. I have the sport model with normal antiwobble and I use retractable ratchet straps way better option for bike tie down. great video

Nice bit on the justification for one with a pickup. End up with so much gear and tools in my cab that I look homeless because bikes and ramps take up 75% of my box. Been considering going this route to get the box back.

I have a question and hope you can help me. What size front tire is on your bike. Mototote says 5” is the max and my bike has a 5.1” front tire. Thanks and I enjoy your programs.
Nice review. I’ve been looking into these more especially with knee surgery coming up...may not be as easy to get the bike out of the truck afterward. Could you use the Stowaway Hitch Tightener instead of the bolt tightener?
Thanks Garrett. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use the stowaway hitch tightener but you would still need the bolt. A standard hitch pin won’t fit through the mototote hole.
I know this is old but we have had 2 moto totes. One suggestion after years of use is instead of the strap on the rear tire or in addition to it put a strap from footpeg to footpeg under the rack, compress the shock a little and its bomber. It also takes pressure off the forks. I have see that many fork braces brake and or fall off so they are a little sketchy in my opinion.
Yeah, that’s a good point. I have switched to straps with carabiner type S hooks so if the fork support did break they would hopefully stay connected. I’ve been to 5 states with this thing and still loving it.
@@DirtBikingwithDonnie yep overall still the best rack out there. Not without flaws but it lasts 10x over cheap aluminum ones. I had had the cheap ones and moto jack racks (all of which broke). We upgraded to a newer model moto tote before their prices went through the roof. I had a Yamaha Tenere 700 and got the heavier duty model. I sold my m3 for a good price. Anyway after many years of service we have the moto tote max. Of course I shattered my ankle and have 5 plates and 30 screws so no riding for a while! Thanks for posting the video.

do you have a link or name of the straps you use, especially the footpeg to footpeg tie down tactic you mention?
@@keeganbennett6724 pro taper swivel for the fork triple clamps and not sure on the footpeg to footpeg. Those don't really matter as it not really carrying weight it's just stabilizing and taking a little pressure of the fork seals.

Thanks for watching. You can't use a traditional locking hitch pin so if theft is a major concern you would need some custom way to lock it. A thief would need the proper tools to remove it so that is a barrier to a degree. I don't worry too much about it getting stolen, I worry more about the bike.

Mototote suggests a cable lock as a theft deterrent.
What do you do when you ride with your son? I have a 12yr old and looking at the double carrier. I have a 2500 so the run up (especially after a long day) can be steep and challenging. I'm in the exploring my options stage. Enjoy your channel and am about to sell my 300XCW for a YZ250FX.
I have a 5x10 utility trailer that I use when I need to haul more than one bike. I’ve seen double carriers before but I think I would be more comfortable with a small trailer in that situation. Thanks for watching!

I'm probably bad at physics, but I would assume this sort of thing is putting a twisting force on a hitch carrier that it isn't designed for? Or is the bike weight simply not enough to be a factor. Other than that it seems like a great solution!
I’m assuming you talking about the anti-wobble bolt. Yes, exactly. It’s designed that way and that’s what caused the original bolt to deform and break. The only difference with my grade 8 bolt solution is that it is much more durable than the original socket head bolt. I’ve been using it for years with no further problems. Mototote has now redesigned the bolt with the newer carriers but it’s still the same concept of tightening the hitch against one side of the receiver.

Sounds like they need to fix the hardware issue. Otherwise, appears to be a winner.
why didint you add a bushing to the nut side. keep both sides stable.
The bushing on the right side is what makes the clamping function work. If you put a bushing on both sides there would be no clamping force between the Mototote and the hitch. Hard to describe without pictures.
Do you know your receiver height? From road to top inside of tube.

Have you come up with a clever way to store this thing when it’s not on your truck?
I usually put it on the garage floor just under the rear of my truck so it’s out of the way but easily accessible when I’m ready to use it.
