Lawn Mower Repair - Won't Start After Rain - Water in Fuel

  • This is a Briggs and Stratton 355ex Lawn Mower 140 cc Engine. After 4 days of rain, even with the mower covered, it would not start. I go through the troubleshooting process to fix the issue and found water in the fuel.
    I removed the Fuel Tank and Carburetor Bowl to find the water mixed in with the gas.
    This is a great Average Guys Garage fix. Do it yourself and save all the labor costs.

    Hi, I just did what you showed in your video. I really appreciate your time and effort to upload this video. I am a 44 widow and this is the first time I screw and screw something. I feel so happy with myself that I solved this pro lem. I had a contaminated gasoline after rain. God bless you. You don't know how much this means for me.

    My toddler decided it would be a good idea to run the hose into my gas tank. Just did this myself and found about 75% water at the bottom of my carb.. Hoping to God that fixed it.. I'll put it back together in a while and let you know. Thank you for the video!

    Thank you for your video! I used it to work on my mower today and even though the gas was fine, I guess something I did cleared it and it started right up. It was blowing white smoke and then just stopped this morning. I thought it might be oil in the carburetor, the sparkplug did need cleaning. Anyway, I was ready to junk the mower and take it to the dump. You saved me the $75 I paid for it a month ago.

    Thank you, mine was the bowl with little water in the carburator bowl, not much, maybe 1 tablespoon. I will advise to start troubleshotting at the carburator bowl if you left it out in the rain. I also removed the spark plug as there was some water in the combustion chamber. then just cleaned the plug good and wetted with gasoline and installed. those two things made it work.

    Yep, this did it!
    It could’ve been a tiny bit of moisture on the spark plug, but I’m inclined to think there was some water in the carburetor bowl. My Honda lawnmower had a bolt in the bottom of the bowl, so I loosened it one turn, let it drain onto some paper towels, and put it all back together.
    This is a great video-thanks for posting!

    In the fall my brother and I put 30/1, 2 cycle gas mixture in our lawnmowers. We are not sure if the lean oil helps the fuel lines and the guts of the carb, but we discard the gas in the spring and put medium gas in and never ever have fuel issues. We are 58 and whatever we do works. Of course we take care of our equipment...new 10/30 oil sometimes synthetic and the occasion rjnce with gas or solvents or kerosene, new spark plugs dry shelters, etc. Weve had our machines for 25 years! Hope this helps.

    i didnt have time to take mine apart today bc i have work meetings all day, the trick that worked for me was bringing my non-covered when it rains out never starts days after raining lawnmower inside my 60 degree Air conditioned house for an hour then brought it outside and it started like normal. gas tank was empty between uses but i filled it up b4 i realized it woudn't turn over. I hit the carb with a wrench handle a few times to solve the lawnmower wont stay started - but when it doesnt want to even show the signs of initial starting I put it inside of house - it does stink like gasoline afterward for a while, but just the hint of it gives me energy bc my brain associates it with working outside in daytime or something. I couldnt find a single video online about brining a lawnmower into an airconditioned low humidity environment - but i swear it has never not worked for me, I know its not fixing the real problem but it must be a hack for someone who doesnt have so much as a screwdriver.

    I just got this mower under a different brand name. The engine and deck are identical. Leaving a mower out in the rain is just a simple maintenance goof, and I'm not too worried about that. However, I'm going to get super upset if the fuel tank gets punctured or cracked that easily on mine. I'm expecting at the least 2-3 years before I have do any replacement parts if I take care of the thing... Thanks for the info.

    To all youtuber diy'ers. My 4.5 B&S flywheel cover violently blew off. Exploded may be a better description.We'd worked on it many times. I put bolts in it to firm it up plus bolts and nut under rotten frame to no avail. I'm going to wire the cover back on just to see if I can "fix" it. It was my secondary mower. Its 20 years old and kvetching had it gir 8 years. I paid $40.00. Its likely hoped but I'm determined to fix it.
    But, when it blew apart I immediately went to Home Hardware and bought a new Powermore 132cc at the sale price of $241.00 including taxes. I used it twice and put it in my basement for the winter.
    Bottom line....
    I've been a loyal dyier youtuber and I tried to fix everything based on what I learned on TH-cam intructionals. I just could not fix my old lawnmowers anymore. I bought new and I'm not ashamed. FYI

    Great short video on the main reason lawnmowers die. One thing, though. At about 9:10 you show gas poured from your gas can into a basin, and because you can't see any "air bubbles" (I know, you meant water bubbles), you assume that the gas in your can isn't contaminated with water.
    I had a similar problem, and used the same approach to test the gas in my can...but I forgot, water is heavier than gasoline, so it was all down at the bottom of the can. To do a better test, shake the can (pretty hard) for 15 seconds, and THEN pour some out into a container. The shaking will have distributed small water globules all through the gasoline, and when you pour some out and let it sit for a few seconds, the water will gather into a bubble at the bottom.
    A neat trick -- pour that gas back into the can, and let the can sit for ten minutes. Then carefully and gently pour off the good gas into another container, without stirring up the water at the bottom. Don't take this too far, though, or you'll just be pouring the water into the new container.

    About 2 years ago, my toro mower wouldn’t start; I assumed water in the gas was the problem.
    I took it to a local machine repair shop, and when I picked it up, it started up like it was new. NO PROBLEMS FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS! The mower even started on half a pull.
    Today, I sprayed off my mower because it hadn’t been cleaned in a years; it was caked! Now it won’t start! Again, in assuming water in the gas/carburator.
    So....are you not supposed to clean your mower?!?!?’

    I saved an old Victa Powertorque mower from a rubbish collection which had been sitting out in the rain.
    The engine was full of water as it had been sitting in the rain & Victa still position the air cleaner assembly on the top of the push handle.
    The rubber bits on the carbys kill switch was deteriorated so was shorting the leads out so I had no spark.
    I tested the engines compression after spinning the engine out & letting it dry out for 24 hours, it tested at 107 PSI after removing the decompressor & plugging the hole,so it's a runner.
    I just added fuel through the inlet & it fired over for 10 seconds, I refitted the carby but it leaked fuel as the primer bulb plate is deteriorated,so the carby needs to be rekitted as well.
    I'll get it fired over with a rekitted carby but the engine still needs to be stripped down as it needs new crankshaft bearings due to water damage.
    So,I'll do that,replace the wheel bearings, lawn mower blades & repair a rust hole in the deck by welding a new piece of metal in.
    I am looking to paint the motor silver & the red base gloss black,anyhow,I"ll have a good mower after that.
    I have a Briggs & Stratton powered one which needs new rings,after that,I'll paint that motor gloss black & the Victa will be a backup mower.
    I just need to find a catcher for both,failing that,I could probably make one out of Hessian material !!!!

    Hi good video........ but, After you put fresh fuel in the tank, I'd grab a bottle of gas line Antifreeze. punch holes in the cap and squirt some the fluid in the tank. this will take the moisture away from the bottom of your tank.

    It sure would have helped a lot if you wouldn't have skipped the part of actually taking the bowl off instead of jumping to it already taken apart

  • @GreenGateTV

    If water is heavier just flip the mower upside-down for 20 mins let all the water drain out.

      Did you discover any water in the gas? Sometimes you have to take an air compressor and blow some air through the carb. Also, one time I did everything and it still wouldn't start but a new spark plug made it fire right up.

    I own that same mower and I removed, disassembled and cleaned the carburetor and now it wont start. What should I do? Before I removed the carburetor the mower was extremely hard to start and it ran very low. Why would it do that?

    • @averageguysgarage
      @averageguysgarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Mott Did you remove the plastic plug at the bottom of the carburetor bowl? This is where some water will hide as well

    • @brianmott728
      @brianmott728 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I didn't know that plug could be removed. What do I remove it with? Do I remove it from the inside or the bottom of the float bowl?

    • @averageguysgarage
      @averageguysgarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes an allen wrench and can be removed from outside of the float bowl.

      My mower runs very low so should I bend the piece the governor spring hooks on to toward the front of the mower? It stands at 90 degrees now like it does on your mower even though your mower runs as fast as it should.

      +Greg Berry Take out the spark plug and let it dry out for a day. Then do the procedure to make sure that your gas is clean and give it a go
