@michaelkearney2186 I've told them many times that they should never do a live version of a song. They should always listen to the song the way we first heard it on the radio so they would have the same first experience that we did.
Not really. I was a kid in grade school when they hit the charts and they were considered one of the great bands in the late 1960s and early to mid 70s. Staying on the charts is the hard part and it meant a lot to bands then and now. Of course with the demise of Rock FM stations people just aren't exposed to them any longer except through TH-cam.
It's a terrible SHAME that this band never made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. They sold out Shea Stadium in NYC in three days beating the Beatles in that regard. HOF is rigged!
Killer song. I particularly recommend it as the concert opener for their live album “Caught In The Act”. If that song as an opener doesn’t get you ready to rock all night I don’t know what will.
Their quintessential hit is Closer to Home (I’m Your Captain). You could never possibly know Grand Funk Railroad without listening to that song first. And I’m talking about the studio version.
Mark Farner is probably the most underrated musician on the planet! He is an excellent songwriter. He wrote nearly all of GFR’s songs including 80% of “We’re An American Band”, which he GAVE the drummer Don Brewer 100% credit to out of the goodness of his heart. He plays multiple instruments, is an awesome guitarist and a top tier vocalist. Plus, one of the nicest guys that you could ever meet.
@@danieldeblass8341 If you had heard it done where I did, in Pittsburgh at the Point, with a train passing by on the track above us while they are making the same sound instrumentally, you may have a different opinion.
In the 70’s when I was a teenager, Grand Funk was all over the radio and they became one of my favorite bands. I was 12 years old when they played Shea Stadium in 1971 and I wanted to go but my parents said no. They sold out Shea faster than the Beatles did.

More people were attending concerts and buying albums during the Grand Funk heyday. During the brief Beatles US touring years, not all parents would permit their kids to attend a show. For Grand funk, most people were of age and could afford to go.
@johnsilva9139 I was thinking that also, but maybe she was just thinking of suggesting more 70s music. Not sure. Sometimes she will ask for more Little River Band when they're listening to Bread, maybe that's just her way.
I feel the same way about RRHOF. I feel sorry that all the early inductees didn't realize one day it would get watered down to just about anyone hall of fame. The same goes for the Hollywood Walk of Stars. It comes down to who can pay for the spot on the sidewalk. I was shocked Martha Reeves just got hers after 50+ years.
