    I'm SO glad you focused on Sting for this vid! Sting is my favorite LOTR sword as well as my favorite movie sword!

    It's amazing to see what Peter Lyon can make with just a grinder. The fact that he tempers his swords with just an oxy acetylene torch is very impressive, most of us sword makers use a digitally controlled kiln.

    He's a lot more clean-cut here than in the Extras bits from the LotR trilogy. :D

    Humm I never had much interest in Sting before, it always seems so small in te hands of the hobbits, but here it seems pretty decently sized. Theres no mistaking it for a short sword, I like it!

    Amazing he does it all himself, watched a cultural video from Japan and all the labour to make a katana is divided up. One person for the blade, one for the guard, one for the handle, one engraver etc. Etc. About a dozen people are involved.

    I'm only 12 but I am SUPER interested in crafting medieval weaponry, armor etc. everyone tells me that, that is foolish but this is my pashon and I'd do anything to do this.

      +FlamingAbyss there are people who make a living as a blacksmith/ master sword maker for theatre, film, costumes, even renaissance faires! Begin studying your craft. Start small. Ask for materials to make chain mail. Watch all sorts of tutorials. Learn to sew, too- costuming and custom art is a really sought after profession when done well.

    stock removal really isn't traditional to medieval swords, that's hand forging. But it all really is in the heat treat. And Peter is still a master at his craft.

    Is there a video where you talk about filming "reforging the broken blade"? I just saw someone trashing that scene. "That's not how forging works. They should've consulted an actual blade maker, etc" I KNOW your people actually did that scene, not just actors

    Does Peter have an apprentice?...because I'd leave Tasmania without hesitation to learn how to forge swords from a professional rather than my basic attempts at backyard crafting.

    • @jamproductions5621

      Cody Cole unfortunately if you check out his website, he says that he doesn't take apprenticeships. However he does have a long list of suggested books about blacksmithing.

    How many "final copies" of the swords did you make? I'm assuming they didn't use the one and only Sting for all shooting all scenes of the film.

    • @elzar5987
      @elzar5987 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      they usually end up making two. one out of spring steel and the other out of aluminium.
      the spring steel one would be used for close up shots and the charaters holding them since steel allows for fine details.
      the aluminium ones were used for the action scenes since the metal would flex more when coming into contact with something dealing a softer blow
      you've waited 4 years for an answer and there you go

    Can somebody help me understand, are the elven vines on the grip of Sting raised or flat? From what I can see from the film, online images (even from the sword they use here as a reference) that they are flat. But the copy they finish in this video has raised vines. The Noble Collection Sting also has raised vines, whereas the UC version has flat ones.

    • @No1sonuk
      @No1sonuk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From a realistic, practical point of view, I'd expect them to be raised to help with grip. It's possible that "non-hero" versions were made simpler for cost. Maybe the "flat" ones are painted?
