Really? I'm so sorry to hear that. Do you know the reason why Shunske Sato is quitting the orchestra? His brilliance in the orchestra is so different... Oh, I'm really, really sorry... 😢
Even for this expert ensemble, this performance is outstandingly beautiful and thoughtful. Many thanks on USA's Thanksgiving Day for this masterly interpretation of our greatest composer.

This whole thing is amazing, and I especially love the opening movement, but that chord progression at the opening of the chorale 14:30 is nuts! Bach always delivers with some crazy genius!
Amazing, it's always delightful to listen to the music of Bach and this performance is absolutely awesome. Many thanks, "Netherlands Bach Society", for sharing!
This is providence, it is not possible otherwise! Last year I presented a work in which I played several versions of the Violin Concerto in Am, BWV 1041: you published your recording a few days before and I was very pleased. Here, I have to present Berg's Violinkonzert "dem Andenken eines Engels" which quotes this Bach cantata in 2 days, and once again I will be able to play your interpretation! Thank you very much for your work!
I can't always hear the solo violin (could be going deaf...), otherwise exceptional performances by all. The counter-tenor's wonderful voice quality saves the secco recitatives.
A truly remarkable comment is given in the annotation to this video: "There was plenty to fear in the Lutheran faith of Bach’s day. Life on earth was a cesspit of afflictions - one long string of laments, complaints, worries and moans. At the end, a heavenly reward awaited you, if you were lucky. But how could you be sure you would receive it? This question instilled great fear in the congregations of Bach’s time." Fortunately, in our enlightened time, life is a series of pleasures, "Die Todesangst, der letzte Schmerz" are meaningless words, and such things as "Ewigkeit", "Seele", "Heil", "Verderben" can only be taken seriously by deeply backward people...
In the meantime, here are a couple other versions of BWV 20: La Petite Bande/Sigiswald Kuijken: th-cam.com/video/RaWkWtC6s_s/w-d-xo.html J.S. Bach Foundation, St. Gallen (Switzerland): th-cam.com/video/vJX8hlCZC8M/w-d-xo.html
Dear Ulises, at this moment we don't have a Spotify channel. The All of Bach project is deliberately set up as an online streaming platform via allofbach.com and since a few years on TH-cam as well. We believe that online streaming is a very effective way to spread our recordings to a worldwide audience. Also, video adds an extra experience: as if you were present at the concert. That information will be lost if you separate the audio from the video. On top of that, the legal agreements with our musicians prohibit the separation of video and audio.
Hi Deborah, that's Matthias Havinga on the organ! You can always find more information about the performance credits on our website www.bachvereniging.nl/en/allofbach!
appreciate the explanatory written intro - insightful and engaging. but where is the biblical verse being sung? including these words is a big + The Word.
I'm struck by the dissonance between the subject -- 18th century music on antique instruments -- and the frantic video editing, where it's rare to be able to count to three before the camera cuts to a different instrumentalist (the vocalists are treated better). A little more time spent on the players would go a long way in matching the music, and letting the audience better appreciate the quality of the musicians.
Thank you for your two cents on the adequacy of the intensity and dynamic range of "counter-tenors" for this cantata. How did you reach this conclusion, given that (1) the alto part was composed for a boy alto or an adult male falsettist and likely performed by the latter and (2) the cantata was composed for the Leipzig liturgy, not for a weekend at the opera? BTW, _countertenors_ is unhyphenated.
@@declamatory What about the "timbre"? This is a historically informed performance of music composed for the Leipzig liturgy, not for the opera. The alto part would not have been sung by a contralto with the thick, warbly _timbre_ you admire. The last coral is quoted in Alban Berg's masterful violin concerto (for the memory of an angel) of 1935.

Got so lost when I was trying to follow along with the lyrics at the first chorale. At least the arias are manageable.
