- Bach orchestrated the enthusiastic and expectant opening of cantata 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, quite modestly. For Lutherans, the festive start to the liturgical year on the first Sunday of Advent had a hopeful character. After all, it was almost Christmas time. But this Sunday also heralded a period of austerity and reflection, which lasted until Christmas Day.

Wao the first movement is so incredible! Such an energy and power, for me it sounds like fury, anger and some sadness. This gives me inspiration for my compositions.
Jos Van Veldhoven is probably my favorite contemporary director of Bach’s choral music. His direction is expressive, clear, and tru to the intention of the music. Watching him conduct, or watching him in rehearsal, his depth of knowledge and joy in the music is palpable. His work with soloists and ensemble allow them to deliver peak performances; his readings are neither florid nor dry. A wonderful performance of this famous cantata. The excellent videography adds an additional depth to the performance. Thank you to All of Bach for preserving and presenting these performances!

I have not paid enough attention to the Chorales in my lifelong fascination with Bach and his music.
Clearly that is my loss! This one is just glorious!
I think the Chorales are among his best pieces, with "Christ lag in Todesbanden" my most favourite.

Das ist eine qualitätvolle und schöne Aufnahme. Viele andere Aufnahmen mit barocken Oboen klingen lange nicht so gut und haben auch keinen so guten Chor. Besonders die Tenor-Arie klingt überzeugend.
These performances continue to entrance me...I know of none better. I always think of dear Simon Preston and Trevor Pinnock when hearing such rare musical excellence.
It is the commitment and sheer joy exuded by performers and the marvellous conductor which grip one's soul.

It's been my experience and it is clear here as well that alternating/mixing up the chorus voice parts (a Bass next to a Soprano next to a Tenor next to an Alto instead of all Tenors together etc) in a high caliber chorus almost automatically makes mini-soloists out of everyone, in a very good way. You can only "hear" yourself and you are almost forced (again, in a good way!) to musically interact with other individual voices next to you, which is what the primary soloists are doing. It may seem like a small "arrangement" thing but it is so much fun to sing this way and produces, well... magic.

Yet another incredible performance by the Netherlands Bach Society. There is very tough competition out there, but I think this is the best version of the cantata available on TH-cam.

Meine absolute Lieblingskantate ❤❤. Meine Eltern hatten vor etwas mehr als 40 Jahren diese Kantate in Zwickau mitgesungen. So kam ich im Alter von 6 Jahren dazu, Bach und dessen Musik lieben und schätzen zu lernen. Es existiert dazu noch eine originale Tonband/Kassettenaufnahme 😊. Ich habe sie geliebt und gefühlt tausend Mal abgespielt. So konnte ich besser einschlafen. Danke ❤ für die wunderbare Interpretation. ❤❤❤ Liebe Grüße
Ich habe in den 80ern , 1985, mal Leute aus einem Zwickauer Kirchenchor auf einer Freizeit kennengelernt. Eine Frau hieß Hartenstein, war sehr nett. Vielleicht leben Ihre Eltern noch und können sich erinnern.

It' s very difficult to synchronize whithout see the director where the ensemble sound travel with delay (it' s a problem for all organists where the pipes body is far from singers/orchestra).

Ich kannte die Nr. 62 nicht so gut wie die Nr. 61, die eine Zeitlang jeden Advent immer in der Nachbarkirche von uns aufgeführt worden ist und die ich auch schon woanders mit musiziert habe. Vorhin lief Nr. 62 im Radio, aber ein Telefonanruf über etwas ganz Anderes lenkte mich ab, und schon war es passiert. Nur noch den Schlusschoral habe ich hören können. Da habe ich hier geguckt, um die Kantate doch noch zu hören. Herzlichen, vielen Dank!

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser perfekt komponierten Kirchenkantate mit gut harmonisierten Stimmen des perfekt trainierten Chors und herrlichen Stimmen vierer genialen Solisten sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. Der intelligente und gelehrte Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockorchester in verschiedenen Tempi und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Wunderbar vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

Thank you for your kind comment. With regard to your question: we do not offer our recordings via audio streaming services. The main idea behind the All of Bach project was to create an online streaming platform for video and audio combined. Most of the recordings are live registrations of concerts of the Netherlands Bach Society and we believe that the video images add an extra experience: as if you were present at the concert. That information will be lost if you separate the audio from the images.
However, for audio quality reasons, we understand the desire to listen to our recordings via high quality audio streaming services. Therefore we are currently looking into the possibilities to distribute our recordings via such platforms. But, at least for this moment, we have not yet decided whether we will indeed offer this service in the future.
@@bach To add to this, I agree high-fidelity streaming would do the musicians and your excellent sound mastering a service.
There is also the risk of TH-cam randomly taking down channels and deleting accounts, it has happened.
It is worth consideration to avoid single-source problems, especially when TH-cam is 17 years old and Bach is timeless!

As I watch the NBS performances I am beginning to recognise some of the musicians. I think the lady cellist is in every one.

I like hearing the big organ playing continuo in the choruses, but I am curious about how NBS coordinates between the Conductor on the floor and the Organist in the gallery: do you use closed-circuit tv?

This is a recording from the early days of All of Bach. At that time we still sometimes worked with two organs, to ensure good contact between the continuo organist and the rest of the continuo instruments (cello, double bass, bassoon) and the ensemble. Later we mostly started working only with the large organ when it was there at a location and in suitable key.
Is Jos going to take over the baton again ?
The application process for a new conductor and artistic director has yet to begin. There is nothing to say at this time about the outcome. We'll keep everyone posted!
