    I think one of the things that gives a wider appeal to Pikmin 4 is that there is no time limit. There are people that enjoy that, and let's be honest, you can impose that limit on yourself. But one of the best parts of Pikmin has been the beautiful scenery of the world itself.

    Pikmin 4 is gonna pop the series. The breakout begins NOW!
    It's popularity is picking up & it's no longer overlooked & buried on consoles that didn't get mass sales from the public.

    I think it's more significant than some people realize that Pikmin 4 has been heavily marketed as a "Dandori" game. It was one of the very first things we learned about Pikmin 4 for a reason. For the past 15 years, if you had googled "what genre is Pikmin" it would probably tell you that it's a real time strategy game. This was the best English term to describe it, since you manage an army and strategize under a time constraint. But Pikmin isn't very comparable to RTS games like Starcraft, Warhammer 40k, and Age of Empires. By marketing Pikmin as "Dandori", Miyamoto has made it abundantly clear to new audiences that Pikmin is an ambitious pioneer into what, even 20 years later, might as well be its own genre.

      What is Dandori?

    • @da_pikmin_coder8367
      @da_pikmin_coder8367 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @auraguard0212 it is a term coined by creator Shigeru Miyamoto. In short it defines the genre that Pikmin is. It is described as the art of using your Pikmin efficiently; multitasking, leaving no Pikmin idle, utilizing the abilities of Oatchi and the captain, strategic combat, all of these play a role.

    • @senseinosenryaku1998
      @senseinosenryaku1998 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    • @nyon7209
      @nyon7209 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@auraguard0212 as a broad concept, Dandori refers to planning to optimize efficiency.
      This is different from strategy in that, the number of turns a game of chess is won in, or the number of pieces lost, are not important. Sure, losing pieces is bad, and doing things in fewer turns means your opponent has less time to develop themselves, but your main goal isn't "be efficient". You're moves should always be made to optimize your chance of success.
      In Pikmin, you always measure success by asking "could I have lost fewer pikmin?" and "could I have gotten more done?" The hard questions are "is sacrificing 3 white pikmin worth killing a Snagret faster?"

    I've been hard at work at compiling a sort of Video Game History gateway playlist, collecting various documentaries, game reviews, editorials, game design analysis vids and such, as well as an assortment of commercials/news clips/etc in between the segments to set the tone and make for a better flow. While the 20th century part is already very well rounded, there's plenty to gather for the 21st century portion.
    I mention this because I'm strongly considering making this video the Pikmin series introduction in that list. It strikes a great balance between focus on the development of Pikmin 1 and the wider context it applies to without jumping around too much or speaking of it in too isolated a context. Really, this turned out super well, and it fits perfectly where I want to place it.

      @@zeroni77 it didn't revive the series, but it renewed its popularity (as I had said).
      To put in more technical terms, Forgotten Land was the only game in the whole Kirby series to pass the very first Kirby's Dreamland in sales, and Star Allies, Kirby Fighters and Super Kirby Clash all had released a while ago if I recall.
      Kirby being in 3D really piqued everyone's interest.

    Long-time Pikmin fan, right here. Loved Pikmin since the beginning. I was six or seven when the GameCube came out with the classic first game, and it was the start of my love for one of Miyamoto's most beautiful and unique creations. I always felt that Pikmin never quite got the love it deserved. Here I am, having just bought my copy of Pikmin 4, madly excited to play it soon. It's been a long time coming! Here's hoping the latest installment will introduce many newcomers to this wonderful series.

      Deluxe actually got me into the franchise (finished it and some side mission). I had fun and have always wanted to play 1 and 2. I wanted to, I didn’t feel I needed to. Pikmin 4 came out and I was hyped for it. I was going to play it even if I never played the first two. I knew the story of the first two and felt that was enough. Then comes the Nintendo Direct. I understand Pikmin while having a good story doesn’t need you to play previous games to get into one. But I needed to play 1 and 2 at this point. There was no excuse not to anymore (getting a new console and og games for it). So I played and finished them before the launch of 4. Pikmin 1 may be my favorite of the series if the trilogy at that moment. It’s so fun beating it in little amount of days as possible, it clearly shows growth. Something all games have but what helps this one is how short it is. How little collectibles and layouts there are to memorize compared to the rest. This does not mean it lacks depth, far from it. It makes it easier to speedrun. The strict deadline was stressful at first (1st attempt 29/30. 2nd attempt 30/19). but you improve on your 2nd run. Pikmin 2 was my least favorite but I did have lots of fun with it. Some stuff felt cheap but it will go better when I do my second run. My only real gripe is the hole of heroes. It reuses a lot of bosses and level designs. I get the intention for it to be a challenge of your skills but it was boring and tedious. While the caves has similar themes layouts were often different and each cave provided a new boss. This cave had a great final boss but the rest was lackluster. This was my last cave and had the last treasures I needed.
      Souring the game for me, but in hindsight I still love it. A tantalizing name for a so so cave. Next time I won’t make it my last cave so I could appreciate it without having high expectations of it.
      Pikmin 3 as I said was also pretty good, it’s been ages since I played it but it was a fun game nonetheless. From what I have played of 4 it might becomes my favorite if it already isn’t. Won’t spoil a word, will just say it’s so good. If your on the fence play the demo, if doesn’t convince you that’s fine to. This game might be my game of the year. Sorry for the rant but this is my Pikmin Journey from the 2019 - until now.

    pikmin 1 and 2 came off as weird to a lot, but it really built the fanbase of us pikminians, or pikmen if you will.
    pikmin 3 was amazing and godlike but came from the Wii U, a (in my opinion amazing but widely received) bad console.
    hey pikmin sucked
    pikmin adventure on nintendo land was so small nobody knew it existed (i thought it was fun)
    but when pikmin 3 deluxe came out on the switch, people were like "oh this game actually matters." but still decided not to play because they thought they wouldnt get it because they didnt play the first 2.
    Nintendo was losing this incredible series, so they did the best thing they could. Create THE pikmin game.
    Pikmin 4, in all of it's design and thought process, is a quality over quantity game. The content might seem short, as you're completing stages very quickly, but the work put into every mechanic and enemy and object will leave a heavy impact. Every little thing in pikmin 4 is so memorable because they're made to be expressive and different, down to the poisonous variant of a dwarf bulborb. Pikmin 4 is also supposed to be a love letter to the fans, and a key to the gate of pikmin to the newcomers. Bringing back, i'm pretty sure every single enemy from previous games and adding new ones and bundling it up makes nobody feel left out. Pikmin stays true and faithful to past games, and I'm so glad there are now a million "playing pikmin for the first time!" videos because people FINALLY tried something different!!!!

    La Planete Sauvage? You mean Fantastic Planet, the one with giant aliens treating the small humans as pets, and how the humans start an uprising? (Not recommended for children, at all.) The animation is very weird on that one.
    The Tim Burton influence, I can see, but I think it would be interesting to see the Pikmin drawn even MORE in the Burtonian style. You know, with more lines than necessary around the eyes and outlines. Then again, maybe I'm mistaking Tim Burton's art style for Gris Grimly's. They do have similar art styles.

    I just watched the intro and a bunch of what you said is arguably wrong. Nintendo did cared about graphics and technical power, (the GameCube was more powerful than the ps2) it was until the Wii they went with gimmicks instead. And WTF Pikmin short films being directly related to the super mario movie, that was made by the minions studio Illumination, nothing to do with Miyamoto.

    I think calling something pretentious is ironically pretentious but for a different reason, which is that i think things are called pretentious when they pretend to be deep and avant guarde when in reality they're very basic and not actually worth peoples time, and anyone who actually spends their time with this thing is pretentious because they themselves are trying to look deep and avant guarde by engaging with this thing. Like wine tasting for example, to people who consider this pretentious, wine tasting is really just people drinking wine, pretending that they're doing something ultra deep which requires a high, elite level of skill and experience. Labeling wine tasting as pretentious though ironically comes across as pretentious because it invalidates people and their hobbies and tells them that they're not worthy of being considered a legitimate thing, there by gate keeping hobbies, art forms and peoples enjoyment of them from whether or not they can be considered valid, which is pretty pretentious. Just let people enjoy what they want and leave them alone

    Wait, wait, wait. Nintendo TOTALLY COMPETED in graphic fidelity during the game cube era, I'd even go further. I think it's safe to say that the Gamecube, despite its limitations, had the strongest graphics of all three main consoles of that era.
    Nintendo DOESN'T COMPETE in graphics since then BUT, that's not because tehy are poor or something like that, which is inferred from the writing in this video. They just don't want to compete in graphics. Because their consoles are cheaper that way. They try to differentiate themselves in different ways, different gimmicks.
    It's not that they can't. They just don't want to.

    Holy SMOKES is this some absolute fantasy material.
    No offense to Pikmin as a series, which is perfectly respectable in design and execution, but far from "saving" Nintendo, by every conceivable objective measurement its been an absolute and complete failure. It consistently, consistently undersells other Nintendo IP's. It consistently fails to sell platforms. Even the overall design direction of gamecube games has consistently failed Nintendo at market when applied across the line, as seen on both the Gamecube and Wii U.
    The only way in which the premise is supported is by attaching concepts completely unrelated to Pikmin to Pikmin to inflate the game's credit. To hand the success of the Wii or the Switch to Pikmin is so far fetched that you may as well hand the success of the NES to the Adventures of Lolo.
    And hey, I'm a big Lolo fan, just like I enjoy Pikmin, but its just not reality.
    Yes, Miyamoto and Nintendo love the Pikmin series, but it isn't particularly different from the large cavalcade of moderately successful to outright failures that Nintendo also loved, from Labo, to e-reader cards, to Nintendo Land, to Wii Music.

      There was nothing inherently wrong with Nintendo Land, at least as a multiplayer game, maybe not worth as much money as it went for but the Wii U days weren’t the most ideal for Nintendo, it had plenty of charm, but it did feel a bit underbaked as a game collection, the games and challenges were really fun with some pals though, it’s a neat party game
