1994 Lollapalooza Randall's Island NY. Beasties hit the stage while the sun went down. It was fully dark during the silence before the final verse in Sabotage. Then the bass line, the drums and all the lights and "BWAAAAHHH" and the pit was jumping sky high. One of the best days ever. It should be a holiday.
The Beastie Boys’ Sabotage is such a fascinating departure from their earlier sound, and it’s awesome that you’re experiencing that shift! To understand the significance of Sabotage, it helps to know a bit about their journey. The Beastie Boys started as a hardcore punk band in New York City in the early 1980s before transitioning into hip-hop. Tracks like Paul Revere (which you’ve already loved) established them as pioneers of rap-rock, blending irreverent humor with their sharp lyricism and beats. But Sabotage brings them full circle to their punk roots. By the time they released Ill Communication in 1994, the Beasties had evolved artistically and socially, exploring more experimental and eclectic sounds. Sabotage reflects their hardcore punk origins but with a polished, rebellious energy that channels their growth as musicians. The song is chaotic yet meticulously crafted, making it a perfect anthem for their ethos: breaking boundaries while staying true to who they are. This genre shift wasn’t just personal for them-it also symbolized their refusal to be pigeonholed as “just” a rap group. It was a bold statement to critics and fans alike, showcasing their versatility and passion for music across genres. And let’s not forget that Sabotage’s iconic music video, directed by Spike Jonze, became a cultural moment that cemented their legacy. So, when you’re stunned by the genre difference, you’re witnessing not only a throwback to their roots but also a testament to their fearlessness in embracing change. Sabotage proves they weren’t just artists-they were innovators who constantly pushed the envelope. Full circle, indeed!
You nailed it when you said you could picture people going wild to this live-what you’re describing is called a “mosh pit”! Mosh pits are common at punk, hardcore, and some rock or metal concerts where the crowd expresses their energy through aggressive dancing, pushing, and jumping into each other (all in good fun… usually). The goal isn’t to hurt anyone-it’s more about releasing raw energy and connecting with the music on a visceral level. There’s even an unspoken “mosh pit etiquette,” like helping someone up if they fall or making space if someone needs out. Given Sabotage’s chaotic, high-energy vibe, it’s totally the kind of track that gets a pit going. The fast tempo, the raw guitars, and that rebellious energy make it a perfect storm for moshing. It’s cool that you picked up on that vibe, even without knowing the term! If you ever get a chance to see a live concert performed of this song, you’d definitely witness a pit!
The writing of this song was awesome. MCA came up with the bassline before the other guys arrived for rehearsal. Mike D. Immediately loved it and laid down drum tracks. It sat on the shelf as an instrumental until Adrock took the track to Mario C’s to record. He set his mic up facing Mario and proceeded to just freestyle roast Mario like he was an enemy stifling their creativity.
Since their recording studio was the old set for the BARNEY MILLER SHOW (a 70s cop sitcom)and most of their influences are from the 70s, they recorded this video in their parking lot and the hotel across the street from G-Son studios in L.A. They kept most of the show set as original as possible, but added indoor B-ball hoop and half pipe for skating in the basement.
Saw these guys at Lollapalooza 1994 in Barrie, ON. I wish I could remember it more I was pretty wasted. And I lost my camera. This is one of the most versatile and creative musical acts to ever exist. They crossed multiple genres from punk rock to hip hop to alternative rock to electronica and had some jazz and funk elements to their sound as well. Sabotage was released in 1994 on the Ill Communication LP. It goes down easily as a top 10 track of theirs.
Yep, as long as you didn’t stop jumping till the song was done, you’d be just fine. Now kids just stand around, too cool to even move, boooooooring!!!!! Damn we had so much fun being there, (not holding up phones for a video we’d never watch again)
I do believe this was picked for best MTV video of all time some time back. I was in the Navy in Hawaii watching MTV in the barracks when this video dropped in summer '94. I remember feeling the oxygen leave the room with the reactions of my shipmates being the same. We witnessed a Goddamn miracle of modern music. My ALL TIME favorite song right here. So glad you found it too young man
One of my most solidified memories from childhood is freaking out when this video came on MTV (back when they played music videos). I wasn't alone either; MTV used to have bumps (short films the length of ads) with recurring characters, one was Jimmy the Cabbie, and his thing was reacting to new videos by talking to a fare. For this video, he was CERTAIN that it was a commercial for a 1970s-themed cop show called Sabotage that he couldn't find the TV listing for in the paper. Someone posted it on TH-cam under the title MTV Jimmy- Sabotage.
The fact they dropped this alt rock anthem as the first single from Ill Communication is still mind blowing. The Letterman live performance of is worth a reaction.
I was lucky enough to see the Beastie Boys live. They played quite a few of their songs on instruments at live shows. They would also play and record different instruments in the studio and then use those recordings as samples in their songs.
This song was on their album Ill Communication and it's my favorite of their albums. Nearly half of the album was made up of amazing instrumentals. We'd put this album on and just sit back and chill for the rest of the evening.
It can not be overstated how big of a hit this was. You could hear this on the radio like every 20 minutes. Music video on MTV several times per day. This and _Intergalactic_ let you know that the Boys were still musical geniuses.

I was stage crew for the main stage of Wakarusa in 2011 and between sets before the headliner the came on, people in the crowd were knocking around dozens of beach balls. This song started playing and the crowd started burst into a frenzy and the balls were bouncing more erratically. A tour manager had me a 5 other guys form a line on the front of the stage to protect the artist and their equipment from the deluge of beach balls. The crowd thought we were part of the act and the intensity went past 11 with anticipation. The amount of energy that was buzzing was incredible! That was my literal 5 minutes of fame.

good hyped up song, lyricism and a great movie too - that's why everyone said to do this one next... I can't wait to see how your musical journey progresses
Moshing is what you're talking about. If you ever decide to check out a metal performance, Pantera performing "Domination" in Moscow is the one that always blows people's minds the first time they see it. I would recommend watching Amon Amarth perform, "put your back into the oar." I've been a row pit, they're a lot of fun.
The Beastie Boys started out as a punk band in the late 70's/early 80's, then jumped in hip hop with their single Cookie Puss. They ocassionally go bask to their roots with songs like Sabotage, Mullethead, and Square Wave In Unison. They also rereleased their pre Licensed To Ill stuff on an album called Some Old Bullshit.
I'm old enough to say, here in L.A., I saw them on Debut Tour (w/ Fishbone @ Hollywood Palladium), and 3rd album tour (w/ Cypress Hill @ Universal Studios), and they busted out the instruments for the punk set, as well as MC work. We did "MOSH" to these fast songs. KEEP IT UP, DUDE
Saw them when I was 13 at Lollapalooza 94 and their set definitely rocked the hardest, harder than Smashing Pumpkins or anyone else there and as for the mosh pits it was definitely happening but chill tho I nearly got squashed being a little kid in the middle of all that. Their page in the Lollapalooza program zine was genius too, with mosh pit etiquette drawn in 60s comic book style and telling guys not to perv on girls in the crowd, I wish I had held on to that piece of history
You gotta check out their second album Paul's Boutique. Back in the day they got a lot of shit for it but it is a GEM, more on the funky side. No one can match the uniqueness of the Beastie Boys. I'm blessed to have been a teen in the 90's and saw them play live several times, they are pure magic live and played their own instruments! RIP MAC.
This B right here is a play on the cop shows from the ‘70’s. Like super cheesy. Just poking fun, having a good time. I think it’s lit!! Hip Hop at its finest.
been to several beastie boys concerts, first one was somewher 1989, then it was rap concerts, later i had concerts that were strictly instrumental, and yeah moshpits were going on
It’s called a MoshPit. Yes they played live and left bodies hehehe I grew up in Pits and am lucky I survived some (Slayer- Megadeath- Pantera) GenX was a great time to be a kid/teen/young man. Don’t dish out what you can’t take!!
There's a good video of them performing this at the 1994 Grammys. That was the first time I saw them playing their own instruments. This song was a huge cross-over hit, charting high on R&B and Rock charts...

Bro... how did not know that's what mosh meant? Lmao I've been in so many pits 😂
If you are after seeing the true glory of a Beastie Boys Concert, look for their 1999 Glasgow one!
that has it all!, even the "mosh pit" circles
I’ve been waiting for this song
Hell yeah, Beasties punch to the dome!
Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two 🔥
They started as a garage thrash band....listen aglio e olio...awsome
Beastie Boys actually started out as a punk band in NYC and had a girl as a band member
RIP MAC.
Best music video ever!!
This was also on the first Star Trek reboot with Chris Pine. its badass...
This B right here is a play on the cop shows from the ‘70’s. Like super cheesy. Just poking fun, having a good time. I think it’s lit!! Hip Hop at its finest.
I remember when this dropped. I was a Freshman or Sophmore, one of the two. 96 I think, so Sophmore. Great times before the world went bye bye.
Boogie... ya gotta say with the small sample size of their music, they have a very diverse range of styles all with varying degrees of rap/hip-hop.
THE SUGARHILL GANG - " Apache (Jump On It) (Official Video) " Old School 80's HIP-HOP and FUNK Classic Jams 🔥 highly recommend this song too.
been to several beastie boys concerts, first one was somewher 1989, then it was rap concerts, later i had concerts that were strictly instrumental, and yeah moshpits were going on
It’s called a MoshPit. Yes they played live and left bodies hehehe I grew up in Pits and am lucky I survived some (Slayer- Megadeath- Pantera) GenX was a great time to be a kid/teen/young man. Don’t dish out what you can’t take!!
Hey Boogie...Nice & Smooth "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow"... you're ears will thank you...👍
Make no mistake. That is Mike D on the drums, MCA on the bass, and King Ad-Rock on the guitar. They work this song out!
YES, Bestie Boys do have Mosh Pits in front of the stage!
Do DJ Quik "Tonite"
beastie boys were originally a hardcore punk group, bar scene NY, 1 album punk before Fight for your right
B-Boys! B-Girls! 🎶
Check out their album "The In Sounds From Way Out"
There's a good video of them performing this at the 1994 Grammys. That was the first time I saw them playing their own instruments. This song was a huge cross-over hit, charting high on R&B and Rock charts...
This was a bit of a throwback to their punk rock roots. But, that scratching on the turntable, tho!
This came out in 1994. The live on Letterman will really blow your mind.
Watch sabotage live on David letterman 1994 i think. They play the instruments live it’s awesome

@ You're right. I didn't see a good video before.
I’m gonna guess there’s been some mosh pits at beastie boys shows. That’s what they’re called. Mosh pits.
Go watch this song LIVE on The David Letterman show!
