As previously noted, Agnes Moorehead was a fabulous actress. If any of you watched the TV show "Bewitched", You'll soon recognize Agnes as Samantha's mother in the show!
This aired a week after Kennedy was inaugurated as president in January 1961. The space race with the Soviet Union was in its infancy. There was a push at this very moment to go into space. The Air Force was heavily utilized in the space program.
I grew up with this show. I loved it and still love it. One of my favs is "Time Enough At Last". This one you just watched is a favorite also. Please know that Rod's last name is usually mistaken as Sterling and it is actually Serling.
Congratulations on reaching 10,000 subscribers! 20,000 subs is just around the corner. It's great watching different generations react to classics like The Twilight Zone. It may not have today's special effects, but it causes to think, and to think hard. Mental suspense is better than any special effects. This actress does a great job with just her body posture. She speaks volumes with it. Great review!
i'd say the genius of the time was the plot twist at the end - it was a single frame at the very end that set your mind to understand the entire story the other way around. Must have been something like watching the matrix :D btw..i think i dated the story back to Moebius and his comics... he had one story where the exploration ship finds super huge planet... with a super huge structure , which colapses on them. THe last picure is an alien dad draging his so by his hand from the beach , with a collapsed sand castle in the corner.
Yeah! Been waiting on this one. Almost all visual without dialog. During my young days, it was a big and scary deal when the Russians put up Sputnik. And there was so much science fiction. War of the Worlds, Them, etc. 1961 was a little before Vietnam came into households as advisers were going to assist the Vietnamese Army.
I saw this episode originally as a child, and I will tell you, it was so creepy and terrifying, it scared the daylights out of me. The spaceship, I think, was a reused prop from the 1956 movie "Forbidden Planet", which I totally recommend to you all. Great special effects! Twilight Zone used many props and costumes from that movie during its run.
this reminded me of a story by stephen king - a hired killer receives a shipment full of toy soldiers who attack him. it turns out to be a "gift" from the mother of his latest victim!
Hi Guys, before I ever saw this episode of TZ, Classic Dr. Who had a story called (Planet Of Giants) in Nov. `64 with the 1st Dr. This idea interested me, so when the U.S. Series (Land Of The Giants) arrived in the U.K. towards the end of `68, it joined my list of programs. Glad you enjoyed the episode & the twist at the end.
There was a whole TV show based on this years later ... but both civs were on the same level. "Honey I Shrunk The Astronauts." ;-) Was years after this show that I got my own TV in my bedroom. Now I watch you guys, not NBC ... from my laptop. Damn ... where is that Twilight Zone theme coming from at my house ...
That's so cool, you are sharing our moments of TV life. I hope you told them that's how they gave it in TV during our time and they kept it original Black & White.
You said she was doing good acting. You should expect no less from Agnes Moorehead. She's won an emmy, two golden globes, and has been nominated four times for an Oscar. She was in what's considered by many critics to be the best movie ever made: citizen kane. However, she is best known for her comedy acting in the 1960s TV series Bewitched
This show aired on January 27, 1961...while the first human in space happened on April 12, 196 with Gagarin's Vostok 1 orbital flight...so it was darn close, but when the episode was made it was only animals that had been to space along with a few satellites and probes.
Rod Serling fought in the Philippines in WW II (The way he 'd sometimes palm cup his lit cigarette was common to G.I.'s in the field to hide the lit cigarette at night.) and was into the equal rights movement of the early 60's as well as the human condition of the different classes. He used the cover of Sci-Fi to convey his ideas on both. A number of his war themed episodes stemed from experiances he'd had or observed.
I like the episode, but like a lot of the original TZ you have to allow for unrealistic things like physics. You couldn't have a giant sized human like that. Look into the Square-cube law. As the person gets bigger, the support structure bears a much heavier load that is increasing at an even faster rate. So in reality that woman would collapse under her own weight. But the story is good enough for me to not care about that. The first time I saw this I didn't even notice that she doesn't talk. Since there is no one for her to talk to, it didn't seem unusual.
People in the 60s weren’t that stupid. They knew those were puppet or toys. People have a concept about a space way before this. Even in the silent movie era the idea of a rocket going to the moon was thought of.
If you like this episode, you guys Have to watch an anthology movie from the 70s called, "Trilogy of Terror." Especially the last story, which is The best and most notable of the three stories. I think the actress playing different characters in each story is Karen Black. It's well worth checking out
I would like to see you react to invaders from Mars. It’s from the 1950s which is the best time. For science-fiction movies. Very campy but very lovable

Giant Space Grannies is why we never went back to the moon.
The spaceship used in this episode was the filming miniture used in the movie "Forbiden Planet".
Does anyone know what happened to it? I would like to have it...

It looks like the spaceship was a model of the ship from “Forbidden Planet.”
It is, in fact, the studio scale filming miniture used in "Forbiden Planet".
You got to keep these episodes coming they so interesting and classic! and there's so many other hit episodes that you guys have to see 💯🙏

i'm impressed with the knowledge they have of the 1960s considering they were born in the 2000s

The concept is we are all alone holding a candle in the dark and death is inevitable.
If you haven't watched The Twilight Zone, Eye of the Beholder......it's a classic, classic.

Thats the ship from Forbidden Planet.

6 foot Grandma from your last viewed reaction ain't got nothing on Space Giant Grannie!
One of the greatest shows ever.

People have a concept about a space way before this. Even in the silent movie era the idea of a rocket going to the moon was thought of.
Rod Serling was the same size as the giant.
Review the movie "October Sky" ... to see what this was really like. Eh, younger associates? Don't keep them up past their bedtime ;-)

I love The Twilight Zone. I have the complete collection on dvd
I would like to see you react to invaders from Mars. It’s from the 1950s which is the best time. For science-fiction movies. Very campy but very lovable
I want to know how long you were watching before you realized there was no dialogue. How did that affect your enjoyment?
There are a lot of great episodes, but this isn't one of them. Try, for example, "Walking Distance."
