Without a doubt the greatest Rotherham Utd performance of all-time. I was there with my granddad. He died last month aged 89 but thankfully lived to go to the New York Stadium (he called it 'Bloody marvellous'). We watched this clip not long before he died... so epic. Ronnie coming to the club was key, but for this kid, Rodney Fern was the man. Forrest Stancliffe Breckin Towner Mountford Goodwin... all true RUFC legends. Golden days.
I remember this game we were in the home end as we were escorted out by the time it took plod to put us in the away end we were 2 or 3 nil down good days
These days the nouveau Chelsea often bait us oldies with "you're be telling us you were at Rotherham next!" I was and can offer no excuses - 6 of us did not utter a word in the car coming home til we got in the pub and laughed that we would look back on it one day and laugh some more!
Im Chelsea through and through. First game was 1977-78 away at Everton. Score was Everton 6 Chelsea 0. Next game was 1979-80 Notts County 2 chelsea 3. So trust me over the years ive seen some pathetic peformances but this was chelsea! thats why we love them and Chelsea had a GREAT AWAY following. When we was shit they say but not shit no more are we? CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE NOW. I remembere this game i was 11 and i saw the score on Ceefax lol. then 2 years later chelsea stormed division 2 with Dixon,Speedie etc. Rotherham was relelgated in 82-83 i remember also. I have respect for Rotherham though, no hate her unlike Manure and shitty whom i despise lol. Keep the blue flag flying...unless you wear red lol
what rotherham can do within a few years i wish we had still got these players now we would win all the times and i wish we would go back to millmoor :)
I can remember when Rotherham produced a similar result against against Liverpool in the late 50s/early 60s in the old second div. I don't suppose anybosdy has any pics or info on that?
fucking hell, I was at all these games with me grandad, back in the days. SOOOO close to going up to the old 1st division. Tony Towner and Ronnie Moore lived just round the corner from us, we knocked on Tigers door god knows how many times for autograph he must have been well pissed off!
We had a penalty in the second half. Bumstead took it and it was saved. The ref gave us a second chance as he was probably feeling sorry for us by then so he said the Rotherham keeper moved. And what happened, yep, same player and we missed it again. Crazy but I preferred this team to the current team. Maybe I felt happier supporting a team who all knew the significance of Churchills "No surrender" and "glorious few" speeches. Or maybe I just liked being able to pronounce their names :-)
Nice one, most Chelsea fans these days will probably never even heard of Rotherham Utd, but this wasn't that long ago... BTW, fair play to Mark Robins, he has done a great job there.
I went. I was ever present home and away with Chelsea from 1979-1983 which includes our worst 3 league finishes in history. Of this match..on the Monday the team, myself and another supporter were due to fly out to The Sudan for 2 friendlies. The team had their jabs on the Friday and this made them weary and sleepy. Study the film and you will see what I mean. No excuses for our 1-4 4-1 home defeat to Rotherham that season. The Sudan trip was called off when civil war broke out on the Sunday!
There just a team built purely on money. Never won anything you could call fair, as you can see here. Imagine if there were a level playing field. Unrealistic I know but imagine.

Possibly Rodney Fern's finest hour in a Millers shirt. RIP Rod, thanks for the memories.
Fantastic... I can see myself and my grandad in the crowd. Classic.!

I was there as a 15 year old CFC fan what a long day that was.
Sad to think that Peter Borota is dead great character
I have the shirt that Rodney wore this day framed on the wall, happy memories.
Well done Rotherham. Chelsea one of 5 most supported clubs in English history, before Abramovic.

02 May 1955 - Rotherham 6-1 Liverpool - Wouldn't have minded seeing that one!

Still to meet a Chelsea fan that can remember this game.
I was there
I was there, and the next season when we lost 1-0

The score was a surprise but not the result, as United finished 7th and Chelsea 12th.
