Southampton , under McMenemy , were a bit ahead of their time back then. Still remember Ivan Golac raiding down the flank. Supported them since 78. They were always great to watch.
Ivan Katalinić!!!Then goalkeaper for Southampton!Living legend of Croatian F.C.Hajduk-Split!1994-95 leading Hajduk in very good season in Champion League as coach!!Good old times of English footbal! We have been looking at your footbal as some other planet!!Keagan,Rush,Archibald,Best,Dalglish...etc.
I'm astonished how already people are saying there is no comparison to Man city's haarland. Please people never forget the legends that are Jimmy greaves and Ian rush. The talented Norwegian has a little way to go yet.
I taped this on Peter Jones commentating, this was how he called the winner 'and liverpool are just inside the Southampton penalty area, a chance here, OH WHAT A GOAL ! a superb goal, beautifuly taken when it mattered and just for a moment ronnie whelan stood, it may only have taken a second and then BANG bit that's liverpool and that cud be significant for 1982 !
I vaguely remember that when I watched the highlights of this game back in April 1982, there were 2 good goalscoring opportunities that Southampton had that weren't shown in this clip. One was a thunderous free kick by David Armstrong, very well saved by Bruce Grobelaar. The other opportunity was when Keith Cassells pounced on a stray Liverpool pass and made a long lung bursting run to outstrip the defence, only to fluff his shot on goal, when one on one with the keeper
TVS who had just replaced Southern on ITV South pulled off a massive coup by signing Gerald Sinstadt from Granada. A fantastic commentator for football and rowing. Sadly passed away last year.
Commentator: "You won't see a better goal than that this season!" And all these years later I still can't think of many better goals I've ever seen than that, ever!
@@DaveAndBeth1978 Certainly one of the most unique goals you'll ever likely to see, in one touch passing and moving, involving no less than 7 players. Magnificent goal, still one of the best I've seen in an absolute classic match, very well commentated by Gerald Sinstadt.
best saints goal - team goal - ever seen

What about that moustache on the Southampton keeper.
Fair play to Southampton a really good side to watch, channons goal was an absolute ripper.

Peter Jones is still much missed, one of the great radio sports commentators.
interesting to see a 1966 winner in Ball playing against a few Premier League era players

Anyone else notice Alan Hansen wearing the no. 11 shirt?
Who is the commentator in this match? Like how blunt and straight-laced he is
Gerald something...
Gerald Sinstadt

Greatest goal ever

Harry Enfields Scousers were playing all over the pitch.
How could that referee give a penalty for blatant dive.
Look at all those bloody hands going up in the Saints end when Rush scores, plastic scousers!
Southampton lost like they always do against Liverpool so there take it like a man not like mouse
Not so back then. Entertaining games between them, too.
Didn't Saints beat Liverpool on a Friday evening, televised on BBC. 1981? 2 - nil. Wallace overhead kick?
