- Back in August 2023 I uploaded my first video - John Blanche discussing a few of his most famous pieces of Warhammer Art. It was really well received as there wasn't much of this sort of thing online. Since then I've gone on to do a number of other videos, but John and I decided it'd be good to do another Art video. Similar format as before, we picked a few of his iconic pieces and just got him on camera chatting about them.
Note: Some of the BFG art from the rulebook is by artists other than those John mentions. I simply chose those pieces as I felt the really fit the tone of BFG. For example, the art piece of the ships at 06:18 is by Des Hanley.
These videos were made in my spare time, and if you wish to pop a donation my way to help support me it'd be greatly appreciated:

This channel needs to be uploaded to the Black Library (the real one, in the webway, not the GW publishing house) and preserved for all time.
It's such a privilage to watch John Blanche reminiscing about his works
Lifelong fan here. These videos are such a gift to us. Thank you!
I actually won a print of the BFG cover art signed by Mr. Blanche. It was included in a White Dwarf contest I won where I got to choose a boxed game of my choice. I chose Epic 40k and i think they felt bad for me, like I didn’t know what I was doing, and so sent me that print plus a copy of the 40K 3rd edition rule book signed by everyone. That print, is a little rough for wear these days because it’s been up in every cubicle in every office I’ve ever worked in. Still have it. Still love it.
Blanche is looking much happier infront of the camera now and much more confident that he was originally, great job in bringing all of this out of him
For people of a certain vintage (me!), his vision and art are utter, glorious peak Warhammer.
John Blanche's pictures are a great inspiration for the hobby. I hope he knows how many people around the world he as inspired. Recreating his pictures with miniatures is very satisfying! Thank you for the videos!
"I'd love to do everything....i just dont have time" that hit deep
Was great to hear John talk about the Windsor and Newton inks, as I've always wondered how he gets them to work so well not only on his artworks but also his miniatures. Calling him talented is a vast understatement. Thanks again.
He’s so humble about his work. The Battlefleet Gothic painting is one hundred thousand times more inspiring and technically proficient than any of the modern digital stuff GW put out. I adore his art. A true inspiration.
Brilliant! Kettle on and nearly 20 minutes of John Blanche talking about artwork 👌
These videos are gold. They belong in a museum.
Thankyou once again for sharing this fantastic artists memories with us, I hope he knows how inspirational his work has been and how many people love him and hold him in very high regard.Really well done, love it.
Listen at this man being all humble about this picture of a spaceship he made that set my imagination on fire and utterly engrossed me into bfg and warhammer in general and i just love him!
I would pay an insane amount of money to have the privilege to see John blanche's original versions in an art gallery. Never has an artist been so inspiring to me personally.
Let's tell james workshop! An exhibition would be incredible
These interviews will be archive gold in just a few more years. People will speak of John Blanche and the other original staff at GW/Citadel in mythic terms. But these videos will show the truth about the decisions they had to make to create the super iconic franchise we have now. thanks very much and please do more if you're able.
These interviews have been amazing. Thank you for this series.
Thank you for sharing this! Love hearing from Blanche.
I really like these. These artworks resonated so strongly with me as a young kid - it brought the universe to life and there is nothing else like it.
Thank you very VERY much !
He's a brilliant artist, looking forward to seeing what he brings to Trench.
I could listen to John talk about art all day long. What a legend.
For the Emperor (and the algorithm)!
Thank you for these videos. I always loved his style and it's very inspiring to hear him discuss it.
Awesome!
thank you so much for those videos, they are such a treasure!
Always love that Harry The Hammer has a lump hammer and not a Warhammer.
Thank you so much for uploading this. I'm currently sat painting some Imperial Battlefleet Gothic models some 20 years after seeing THAT image which got my imagination fired. Never got to play at the time but nor did I ever forget that artwork on the side of one of the big starter boxes as a kid.
Absolutely delightful!
I feel you John. I'd love to do everything to - but I don't have time. Even gaming now by the time I start picking up on how to play one edition, the next one comes out.
Thanks filmdeg.
This is a gift and a service to history
John Blanche is Punk rock as fuck and I am here for it.
Minute 14:45 that Yet was the nicest representation of GWs gollum transformation
Harry the Hammer is such an iconic piece of art. It has a hammer, chaos and a skeleton being bashed in. Quintessential Warhammer really and far and away so much more soul and character than any modern digital artwork.
I love how Mr Blanche is so self effacing and humble. Thankfully he seems to know how much he is appreciated by the fans.
I am not surprised by his opening comments about preferring to draw living things. His BG ships do look alive. The man is specifically to 40k what Macquarie was to Star Wars.
Skeleton Horde, We Are Legion...Omg. 😎🤘🏻
Nice. Could we have the sound up?
❤
Perhaps you could ask JB about "ArmourCast" and their background history ... i'm sur we would all like to know more about the OG Ork battlewagon / mole / Eldar titan... Thank you so much!
I'm quite fond of Boris Wuhuhu myself.
Amazonia Gothique and Harry the Hammer are of course still going strong, I was zero when he did Harry the Hammer it is is one of my all time favorite pieces.
MOAR
Proper armour with 9 inch heals
Documenting the history gw should but won’t
I get the impression that this is not one of Johns favourites
Yep. IP laws ruined creativity.
Great stuff as always.
Was just watching through a lot of your interviews the other day to show them to some friends, crazy how I always do that or something similar right before an upload
