We are not paid media for Sena and so we will give you a Honest Long term owners Review of the Sena 50 S. Long Story Short.... Avoid this intercom System if you live anywhere it rains! It is not waterproof and does not Carry a Waterproof IP67 Rating and so it s only good for the Trash.

I’ve never used sena, because like you, I did some research and saw some reviews that they weren’t water proof. Ive got two Cardo packtalk bolds and I ride everyday. Through all weathers, between 8-14 hours a day. I’ve ridden through some biblical rain 🌧️ and it has never failed me. I thoroughly recommend Cardo.
Cardo is next for us in fact we have been using it since yesterday and impressed so far! I wish we did the reaserch many years ago before the many annoying moments with sena we had!
You were smart to research them first! Not a cheap mistake to make!
@@batotofhell your not wrong!
I'm sure these were being sold at a discount a few years back but all the reviews said they weren't up to scratch.
I use the Sena in the same situation like you describe and it working amazing too.
I have used the Sena system for over 10 years, the 10's, 20's, 30's without any problems. I have used it in the rain, fog, dust and extremely rough terrains. I am now upgrading to the 50's and look forward to a quality product with the ease of firmware upgrades and upgraded sound. The battery life is phenomenal and the range is great. I don't understand the problems you are experiencing. Good luck.
I had previous models which were never effected by the rain but the external fitted units on the 50 seem to suffer badly with water ingress. If you can get a unit built into the helmet, but Sena themselves dont claim there unit is waterproof and it carry's no waterproof rating
My experience with the 50S is the same as you...faultless...even in Belgium downpours! :)
I would be fuming if I was you and also sorry for anyone else getting Sena without watching your video! LOL I had Cardo for many years and could not be happier. Maybe cardo next?
I have Cardo, I also had a much older sena that worked well but I heard the new ones were not so good
Exactly! Cardo is our replacement and we hope the experience will be much more positive and user friendly!
Just blows my mind how they sell so many of them! Feels like a daytime robbery
@@Freespeach123 we have seen recent marketing of adventure bikes splashing through rivers with the senas. We commented but had no reply surprise surprise!
That’s naughty and only going to lead to disappointed customers
I got Sena 50S because my father and brother have Schuberth helmets and Sena is the proprietary system for that helmet. Will see what happens. We only got it for convenience. Why manufacturers don't have a standard infrastructure is just a PITA and honestly should be a requirement. What I don't understand is, why is comes such a crucial necessity for you?
Seems to me a object designed to work on the outside of a motorcycle helmet needs to be waterproof as a basic standard, if it is not it’s simply not fit for purpose
Interphone and NComs. I use both and both have been through biblical storms on my tours without any problems whatsoever. The NComs with the Nolan N70X helmet which Bridge organised for me is an integrated neat solution which is brilliant
I’ve not heard of the NComs one, but we have seen that the interphone ones are becoming popular, how is the music sound quality? Bridge are having so many problems with the Senas they are stopping stocking them
I also have a Nolan helmet and was looking at their NComs as they are specific for Nolan and very streamlined, but it seems they use very old Bluetooth technology. If you just want to integrate your phone (android) and bike (Honda Road Sync) is the quality and reliability (not dropping out) good enough?
@@mrcintheuk4641 that’s right! We found singing the bike to the phone was interfering with the usage of sena but this could be better and different when using some other comms. Would be interesting to test this on the Honda now
Mine when paired caused all kinds of problems, none of it seemed to talk to each other correctly
@@batotofhell it didn’t work well with the twins either
Don’t bother with Interphone they are awful!
They randomly turn up to defenening levels. We aren’t the only ones to get rid of those.
Are you on sena now?
@@ontheroadadventure yes we have the 50s and so far they have been ok.
They are great when they work! I hope they will stay that way for you 😃
Hi, I had a Sena S21 never had any problems with it in the rain, but the sound quality was rubbish, fast forward to this year, I bought the all singing and dancing cardo Packtalk edge duo from sports bike shop around £478 pounds would never buy anything else but cardio, everything is quality.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Sounds amazing! I hope we will be equally as happy with our packtalk Cardo! Do you think the music sounds better on Cardo? Sena was talking so much about their headset sound quality but I think Cardo beats it by far!
@@ontheroadadventure the music is definitely better on the cardo
@@petercole9343 Excellent we do love to listen to the tunes to pass away long mileage days
I know a few people who’ve had problems with Sena which is disappointing… My 8 year old though does have the Sena 50s on his crash helmet but of course we avoid the rain so no problems so far. Personally I’ve not had any problems as mine is the SRL2 that’s of course the integrated version for the Shoei GTAir2.
Keep up the good work guys..
People seem to have no so much problems with the intergrated ones which is good news for you, but the 50s is definitely no good in the rain, don’t chance it as once it’s damaged it’s never right after even once dried out
@@ontheroadadventure it’s ok… Wife won’t let me take out the little one unless dry roads are guaranteed. 😅
The integrated one is great but then again I don’t have much choice if I want the GTAir2 🤷🏻
Your set on that lid?
@@ontheroadadventure I already had the lid before the intercom… Love the lid and love the SRL2 but if I change helmets I won’t get Sena again.
@@TheBucksBiker-lh2nm No we are finished with sena
just watched your review video for intercoms i've used cardo for the last few years i ride all year round i've got the freecom 4 and it is waterproof i've been out in really bad rain and it still works fine
It seems the cardos have really good reviews from owners, we will be looking at the new ones from them I think
I had the sena built intercom for the GT2 air helmet and it was utter garbage never worked last time I used it I ended up ripping it out the helmet and throwing it down the drive.
I’ve got a Cardo edge now and it’s much better not perfect but good enough.
This is exactly how we felt with the senas! I wish we could see you ripping the sena out and throwing it! That got us laughing 😂😂 Sena was very frustrating to use and never again unless something changes dramatically
What problems did you have? If it’s built in is it waterproof or no?
@@batotofhell Our senas would repeatedly disconnect, turn themselves off, crackle and be distorted even when we were right next to each other at lights etc. Very frustrating. No idea how the built in ones are or what the issues are in those senas
It never got chance to get wet, it kept loosing connection to my phone. Voice commands didn’t work, kept loosing connection too other intercom in the end it was completely useless. I contacted sena and they never responded
@@ontheroadadventure they bounce very well only thing it was good at.
I went from Sena to Cardo. Love it.
Which one did you go for? Did you have trouble with sena too?
The Sena was disconnecting every so often and in the middle of the conversation. Volume was way too low at highway speed, not possible to hear what they say.
Got Cardo x2 and it works as supposed to. Talking to a passenger or other rider. Listen to music, talking on a phon... Never problem with volume. All clear..
My other friends have x4 and also the one you can talk to many riders (Edge?) and happy with it too.
@@FxRiderST we wish we did this research before we bought Sena! Looks like everyone is happy with the Cardo and everyone had similar experiences with sena too
May I know which country makes Cardo and Sena?
No idea, check them out on Google 👍
Cardo FTW
Cardo seems to come up trumps in this comments section! We will go with the majority on this
Just got a cheap one to listen to music and sat nav! I think you recommended it? Lexin B4FM it was on offer so very cheap
ohh yes they are great at the price and also they are IP67 waterproof
Excellent buy, has all things you need and no more and doesn’t cost £500!
A fair point made well!
hi all, same thing with the Sena 50C, last big Tour it rains strong for 1hour - the Sena quit. Yes the dealer changed it by a new one, but this don‘t solve the Problem with driving in the rain. At this time i always put a new condom in my pocket so i can use it also over the Sena when it rains 😉
We heard of someone else who carries gloves to cover their Senas too
I never knew that sena was not waterproof! It blows my mind as I had same trouble and always blamed myself for it due to sena being complicated and the endless updates! What’s the solution? What’s next?
exactly same experience here! If anything we feel silly for not reading the small print that is in. fact not waterproof
You shouldn’t blame yourself, shame on Sena. They will get left behind by the better brands if they don’t up their game
@@momo-go4pl we live and learn!
@@momo-go4pl it looks that way already
I had the same experience with Sena being not waterproof but like an idiot I stuck with them for years.I'm not vloggng like you guys I just wanted communications and music with navigation prompts.Like you say we assume they're waterproof because they are marketed to us bikers. The first one I had was the old SM10 and the first storm I was in it packed up.I saw the rep at Arizona bike week that year and he told me that they weren't waterproof just resistant.Anyway I've now gone with the Cardo packtalk edge and so far it's been great and like you say they're waterproof. So easy to use and great features and no connecting to my Macbook to update for which I had two apps....one for Sena and one for Harley Sena
No problem with our Cardos either and we test them more than most 👍
It’s criminal of sena and the price of them ? Unbelievable! Any how Merry Christmas to you both hope you both have a good one all the best xx
Absolutely agree here with you, the price is not adequate to quality level provided by Sena. Merry Christmas to you too! What is your comms of choice?
This does not look good on the sena brand
@@momo-go4pl It’s a shame really
I feel that this were always and forever problems with Sena but I had no idea it is not waterproof at all! It’s shocking how it’s marketed as this durable motorcycle accessory
How do the get away with selling it for outdoor sports and use if it’s not suitable for the rain?
@@batotofhell That is exactly our question as there is clearly other waterproof products. You can not have not waterproof comms in the UK, just makes no sense
@@batotofhell It's easy! They put on the box that it's only water resistant and rely on people not read the specs before buying. I've had a 10c Pro for about 8 years and it's never missed a beat, I've just ordered a 50C but will be looking in to ways of water proofing it, maybe a little none conductive Vaseline over any exposed contacts.
Sounds like it's for dry summer use only at best..
Which is ridiculous right? We tried out some LEXIN ones that were IP67 rated at £70 the pair, and sena cannot do that?!
It's a great work, I wish you success 🌹❤️
Thank you :)
Guys, some thoughts, IP67 is for dust protection, and water proof, 1m underwater for 30 minutes, I know it rains a lot in the UK, but you're not holding your breath that long. IP63 or IP64 would be enough to deal with rain or a splash from a river crossing. To be IPwhatever certified you have to actually send away a product to have it actually accredited, this costs time and money and it's not uncommon for companies to design a product to meet an IPwhatever requirement, but then never actually get it certified, because often, it's just not worth it. Hence why I suspect they specify "water resistant", it doesn't need to be water proof, you're not using it under water. It is common however, for very cheap brands, to claim they are IP10000 certified by NASA and the FBI, because that sells units, and the company will be dissolved and disappear long before anyone can prove otherwise.
For the record, I have both cardo and sena, and they're both junk in my opinion, but not because of the IP67 thing
Well we are hoping are cardos out perform the sena as they failed us miserably in bad weather
I’ve had the Cardo edge for about a year with no issues, went through proper biblical rain on NC500 no problem at all. The group I ride with love their Sena’s and wouldn’t entertain anything else🤷🏼. However they put a nitrile rubber glove over them in the wet😂.
Wow, that’s unbelievable about the glove! Although I wish we knew this before parting with over £500 for our Senas! That’s just ridiculous
How do you rate your Cardo? Have you tried the new voice recording feature?
hahaha never seen anyone with a rubber glove over Sena! must look comical! Can you connect to your friends through mesh between cardo and sena?
No I can’t say I’ve tried the new voice update. I’ve done the update just not used it but I’ve seen other TH-camrs rate it. I think it’s good. Activation using ‘hey Cardo’ is bit hit and miss but using Siri is good. The back ground noise reduction is brilliant, had telephone conversations and people can’t believe I’m riding the bike. So my experience so far has been excellent. Not sure how good Sena range is but Cardo is good twisty hilly areas it is reduced but expect most would be.
@@ant25ify we have been watching others review the new Cardo and we are definitely interested. We just need solid reliability especially when your at the premium price point
I can highly recommend Cardo Freecom 4x absolutely brilliant . I ride all year all weathers including pouring rain no issues at all. Audio quality for music is great too.
What’s the difference between this one and the new edge ones we have seen?
@@ontheroadadventure I believe the biggest difference is the number of riders/units you can connect in a group - the 4x is up to 4 I think the Edge is up to 15.
Ok, we don’t like huge groups on the com’s so just me and ewa is fine
Thanks for the heads up guys, I'll be getting one soon and it won't be a sena, for sure.
If this video saves one biker from the horrible user experience we had then we are happy to save you! 😂 what do you think you will chose as your next headset?
@ontheroadadventure I'm not sure yet , I have some training to do in January then I'll be seriously looking for one.
Seems like a wise choice looking at all these comments

I need to pick a Sena up just for when i go on Casual rides out so looking at getting the ST1. I have a packtalk edge on my touring helmet so didnt think the 50S would warrant the additional £100 over the ST1?
I don’t know anything about the older Senas to be honest I would be looking at only Cardo after our experiences with both companies
@ontheroadadventure Yeah, I'd gladly stick to Cardo but for the life of me and others, can't figure out how to connect Sena and cardo..
@@inked-96 Yeah id bet they each make it difficult so as not to support the other brand
@ontheroadadventure Absolutely. States on their website that they connect, but I've no luck, lol. Enjoy the rest of your evening 👊
Yeah it’s no accident
I'm getting old.
I love the disconnect from modern life that riding my bike gives. No phone, music, or earache etc etc.
Perhaps different because my better half rides pillion, not her own bike. Ironically she has a comms ( cardo, i think) to listen to music.
Even when riding in groups i abstain from the group chat. Silence is golden.
Ride safe and happy travels 👍
We love to use our coms, but we too have long periods where we do not talk to each other, we listen to music etc and not chat constantly. However it’s invaluable to us being on separate bikes when touring. We don’t like the group ride chats though so much, it’s too much going on
Exactly same for me, I like my comms to be there when needed but also enjoy riding in the good old silence
@@Freespeach123 We hear ya!
Seven days on the road with my friend round the Lake Supior Circle Tour. Five of those days in cold artic downpours that penatrated my "waterproof" riding gear until I was soaked.
Not once did our Sena 50s's give us a problem. Not once!
The only thing we did before leaving was dismount them and spray silicone lube on the contacts. Then each day we made sure the flap over the charging port is secure.
I've been riding with this 50s for three years now and it has performed flawlessly.
Sorry your experience wasn't as good, but for me I really like my 50s.
Long may it continue for you, we didn’t have much luck but when they are working they are amazing bits of kit. We have the Cardo edge now and so far so good 👍
What do you mean by this?
Too cool for us to understand too lol
We use the Interphone comms. Had them for 4 years and never had any problems. They’ve been used in all weathers and still work perfectly. Good clear signal and never any issues with connecting them.
Amazing, we have seen this brand has some new ones but not sure of the features etc. How is the speaker quality for music on these?
@@ontheroadadventure good speakers and great sound quality
@@cherylclarke5322 Interesting, I wonder how the process compares to the cardos
Tnx for the advise. I use a cheep bluetooth set for connecting to the bike to use the android-auto system. But i am looking for an intercomm-system.
We are also now looking for our new ones we will see what’s best voted here
I find the quality really good. It integrates with my Ducati and I can control everything from dashboard. If you want to try mine you’re welcome. It’s an adventure helmet with a fully legal detachable chin guard, sun visor and unlock. I’ve got the ladies one too
You have senas built into the helmet?
Sena is garbage. I bought the SRL when I bought my Shoei Neotec. You can barely hear it above 60mph even after doing all the resets etc. Sena are well aware of the issues and have produced upgraded speakers for other models but not the SRL. I have a cheap Cardo in another helmet and it is much better than the Sena.
We also upgraded our speakers but they have been constantly problematic
I bought a Sena ST4 because like you my mates had Sena units. It's great for music, often low quality sound as an intercom. Never tested it in pissing down rain. I am reading so many reviews of cheaper better units I will take a punt on one if I need to change the Sena. I usually ride alone so it isnt the end of the world at the moment. Like you I assumed waterproof but just checked my unit, it says 'water resistant' as you said. Load of crap, I am gutted
Yep, toilet paper is water resistant to a point! It’s completely unacceptable
Me and my wife use Interphone Tour for about six years in some absolute downpours, battery life is brilliant, I wouldn't use anything else.

Look in to Jess expensive. Unknown brands. Cardo and Sena are crap.
We tried some cheap LEXIN ones which were good for the money but not the sound quality of the more expensive ones
I bought a couple of Fodsports M1-S Plus after I broke the charging port on my old set of cheap BT2s which I've had for years. The fodsports have been faultless in every weather conditions. Works perfectly when taking to my daughter when shes a pillion.. connects everytime to my phone/sat nav and other units. I have a Sena SMH5, very old and cheap model, never failed me, rain or sunshine, must be how lucky you are, some might get issues some might not, keep in mind that they sell probably tens of thousands of those intercoms and you only get a few bad reviews and people tend to only leave reviews when things go wrong almost never when everything works ok.
Looking at the comments most people with the newer senas have had the same troubles. I think the weakness is in how it connects, I think the electrical pins are too exposed to water damage.
I was already looking at an intercom, but after your video I bought the cardo4X, without your video I would probably have bought the sena, so you saved me disappointment and a lot of money, thanks for that.
Glad we can help. We want our viewers to have faith we will only promote products we like and know to be good, and if we find fault we will tell you too!
Good vid. I have always used Cardo, currently with the slightly older Packtalk Bold and it's never let me down. Every time I check out Sena u read about lots of problems. Unfortunately, the integrated systems on some high end helmets use a Sena system - don't know if they would be better in the rain bacuase they r built in. The problem with any integrated system Sena or Cardo (on AGV I think) is it seems u r always buying older technology for high expense! It makes more sense to me to buy the later tech on an independent system. I think wind noise is likely to be reduced if u do use the integrated versions though. All the best to you both.
I believe the integrated units fare better but you need to replace the unit when replacing your lid too
We use some FOD sports intercom and they have been surprisingly solid. We haven`t ridden in any biblical rain but we`ve been caught out a few time and had no issues.
We have not heard of this brand? Where did you find them for sale?
Good crack , cheers ✌
Thank you! Cheers!
Cardo all the way
Did you have the Sena experience previously? Cardo is looking like a clear winner
Like you, I’ve been using Sena for several years. We needed mesh for group riding, and therefore everyone using the same systems. I just accepted that the inconsistency and unreliability was due to technical limitations. Sometimes they worked great, sometimes the sound quality or range was poor and, if it rained, they would stop working. We all know who’s fault this is 😉
Yes! We hear you! 😂😂
Well know we now! It is just a basic product at a premium price that does not even meet the basic requirements of being able to be used in the rain. We have all been had! Cardo’s seem to have all the good reviews here so we will be doing that next
I am a motorbike instructor in newton abbot, I have had cardo freecom 4 plus for 3 years and as an instructor have used them pretty much everyday and they are brilliant and are still the same units I bought 3 years ago. The ubits i use are Bluetoothbut the packtalk bold is the one up from freecom4 plus. I believe the cardo edge is the new mesh version from cardo. Cardo all the way for me. I believe interphone and similar brands are actually under sena as they can hook up with them through Bluetooth. Cardo is not under sena.
Hi, thanks for joining us on the channel. Another fantastic vote for Cardo, we wish we had done this before spending our on the latest sena’s! We will be getting the latest cardos. Never again will we buy a sena product.
Me, my lad and most of the group I ride with have the older PackTalk Bold and they have performed flawlessly in all weathers over several years. I know the newer models have more features but whilst our PackTalks are still working I see no reason to upgrade but I would recommend the cardo brand wholeheartedly
Thanks, we will be trying the new cardos 👍
Ive been using a Cardo Packtalk Edge for about 6 months and its been faultless even through downpours, i had an early Sena and had trouble and like you did some research and found many people saying scrap it and move to Cardo

Cardo, been using a cardo freecom for over 4years now all year round... torrential rain, sleet, snow, even sunshine occasionally as it's the uk and never had a problem. Also new cardos can link into sena headsets too now.
Thanks, the senas are for the bin we will be getting new cardos based on the comments here. This is a perfect example of us bikers helping each other out. Knowledge is power!
I switched from Sena to the Cardo Packtalk Edge, it connects first time every time and I've had no problems. It has the facility to record audio which should suit your needs.
Does that audio feature work well?
ive had the exact same experience, me and my partner have sena 30k and we started having loads off problems like the volume control would not work at the time i thought this was from wear and tear but i know now it was water damage. i didnt realize till you just said that no where do they say it is waterproof and i like you assumed it was. looking at getting Cardo's next, fingers crossed they are better.
