More like late 90s/early 2000s, but yes. I still love an Amaretto Sour, but I'm definitely making it with high quality ingredients and fresh juice when I make them nowadays! I'd say I make one at least once a month.
This is the best amaretto sour I’ve ever tasted my normal recipe is 45ml amaretto, 15ml bourbon, 30ml fresh lemon, 20ml 1:1 syrup after watching a couples months ago I’m proud to say that I’ve managed to put your cocktail on the menu at the restaurant I work at, it’s a real hit (I’m also using 3years calvados it’s the cheapest “apple brandy” we have) the owner and managers weren’t too happy but after seeing how popular it was he had nothing to complain about, I’ve been following you for almost 2 years as I would have never come as far as I have now thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and spreading the word, you do so much more for people than you’d think, I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart
Agreed, I've been using a cask strength 4 grain whisky when I don't have bourbon and feel like using something a little too expensive (it's less than an ounce so I don't feel too bad) and it's reeeeally good. I usually use simple instead of demerara syrup, but Anders' video got me wondering if orgeat might work well with this, particularly with the spicy rye. I'll try that the next time I make it.
Morganthler's Amaretto sour was one of the first drinks I discovered on the internet and made at home and thought. 'This is fun, I'm going to keep making drinks at my house!' so it has a special place in my heart.
I'll never forget that, either. I'd been watching Small Screen Network, and somebody mentioned Jeffrey Morgenthaler. I Googled him, and two things stand out to me to this day: his crack at the Amaretto Sour(which was my (now ex-) wife's favourite drink), and his home-brewed ginger beer with Kaffir lime leaves. His tequila-sherry egg nog recipe is worth a visit at this time of year as well.
Amaretto Sour enjoyer here! Going to love trying this version, but my go to that I really enjoy is: 2oz Amaretto 1oz lemon super juice .25oz simple syrup(rich) .25oz maraschino I think the maraschino gives just enough extra flavor and bitterness to take this drink to a different dimension while keeping it low proof.
That's just the way I like it. I typically drink pretty dry cocktails, but when I am in the mood for an amaretto sour I am looking for more of a dessert. So if you want less sweet simply leave out the simple😉, also depending on the amaretto you are using it can be more or less sweet.
Some of my frequent favorites is something I call "lime in the coconut" which I am sure has an existing analog but it is just: 2oz rum(over proof, typically) 1oz lime juice 1oz unsweetened coconut water And bitters if I am feeling it. And what I like to make as a Gin Oldfashioned: 2oz gin .25oz lavender syrup 1-2 barspoons Fernet Branca for bitters 1-2 drops Orange blossom water And express and garnish with lemon peel.
I make these all the time since my girlfriend loves them. I use Morgenthaler’s recipe except that I prefer Rye to the cask-proof Bourbon. The bar I used to work at also had a version on the menu that was very popular. In my opinion, you have to serve it up and make some hearts with bitters in the foam alongside the cherries.
We have been making the amaretto sour you shared 4 years ago any time the mood hits us for something sweet. It's my mother's favorite, and we are required to make a batch of them every Christmas. I have a nephew who turned 21 in the last year and it got back to me that his drink of choice is amaretto sour... so just two days ago I went searching your old videos to send him the link. I can only hope he goes down the rabbit hole and binge watches your channel. He will be the best educated bar tender at college. Thank you for the endless inspiration.
Yo! So i made this but instead of Apple Brandy, I used Cognac and no egg white and it is still amazingly tasty! I gotta say, I think Morgenthaler's Amaretto Sour is definitely in my top 10 favorite drinks!
Well, you got me again! I didn't care for the versions I have had before but your version got me hooked. I actually tried it with Laird's Applejack as well as BIB whiskey and they both are awesome! Now to get a nice fire going so I can enjoy this sour the best way I know how. Thank you again good sir!
I very recently got into cocktail mixing for me and my brother in law and subsequently found your channel, but I was disappointed there was no amoretto sour video as its my current favorite drink, today is my lucky day!
Just made my first Anders video cocktail and this Amaretto Sour was fantastic!!! Made it for my parents and my husband and all were impressed. So smooth and lovely! Thank you!!
Hi! As an aficionado and a bartender I love your videos 😍 The last pronunciation you said, the Italian one with a "harsh T" is the correct one here, but I get in English sounds a bit awkward. Second of all, actually the word "amaretto" originates from a particular type of cookie really crunchy, kinda dry and which tastes like almond and bitter almond. So the liqueur has very similar tastes. Thanks a lot for your time reading this. ❤
the way I make this drink when I'm working is 4cl amaretto 2cl bourbon 3cl lemon 1,5cl simple syrup (with a little msg) egg ofc, but i actually add two dashes of peyshodes in as well before double shaking. I think it makes it a lot better and it also removes some off the eggy smell
Amaretto sours are a tradition in my family around the holidays! Most of my family arent big drinkers, so an easy, sweet amaretto sour is just the ticket!
Love this recipe Anders. Never would have thought of it myself and personally consider it a definite improvement over morganthaler's from the perspective of it being an Amaretto drink first and foremost. And perfect for fall. Thanks!
Amaretto sours are the go-to sour cocktail I make for guests who are new to bourbon or cocktails in general, although I do enjoy them from time to time. I'm excited to try the applejack idea! I stick with bourbon generally, but not cask/barrel strength. Just a solid base 80-86 proof bourbon.
When i make it for myself i do 50 ml amareto, 20 irish wiskey,30 ml fresh lemon,15 ml simple siryp,15 fresh orange juice, egg white and for garnish ORANGE PEEL IS A MUST dont say otherwise and some times dash or two of angostura. I find this combination of ingredients is the perfect comb for me. Now you have picked my interest with this recipe i must give it a try.
I have had certain success using the Morganthaler recipe without egg white, but I have since been using Pfaff’s cocktail foamer for all my sour style cocktails, and it stay true to the spirit of egg white sours. I highly recommend it.
From an other barman and cocktail enthusiast, lovely content! Fun fact, I'm from Italy and for the Amaretto Sour we use "Disaronno" amaretto liquor, wich is the most common amaretto liquor here: also, it's called "Disaronno" because it was born and still produced in the city of Saronno (in the north of Italy, about 1/2 an hour from Milan) and in italian Disaronno means "From Saronno". I work in a small city wich is pretty close to Saronno, so we have the priviledge to have it produced "around the corner"
🍒 I love the Amaretto sour! Especially with bourbon instead of brandy. And maybe a halved fresh bloody cherry in the shaking tin, for the fun colour. And this is saying that my taste has aged rather well! as a teenager I used to get drunk on redbull+amaretto. Tasted like a bright red cherry Kojack lollypop and did the job😬
my wife's favorite drink. used to make it with jameson to beef up the abv, have more recently turned to the morgenthaler recipe as inspiration as well. don't sleep on mellow corn in there as well!
Amaretto Sour lover here! My friends and I reallyyyy love this cocktail, I would say this is our #1 cocktail hands down. I don't use anything other alcohol than Amaretto tho, I'm eager to try your version ! Also, for the egg white I like to shake it before putting any ingredient, using the string of my strainer that I can take off, to help emulsify the white. A special technique a Mexican bartender taught me once. Cheers !
Amaretto sour is my absolute favorite drink. I've shared it with all my friends and now many of them love it. I will definitely try this recipe at home, drinks that cooperate brandy is in general very interesting and good tasting.
I love these. I have been drinking them for the last few weeks. My recipe is simple. 8oz can of sprite, medium lemon, and 1.5oz of Disaronno. Fast and tasty with no eggy smell.
I just got home to Nova Scotia after a visit with a lovely friend in Brooklyn… found this latest video of yours after a walk on the cold beach and made one for myself and my husband. I have a hard time getting a decent apple brandy here (the price of living in paradise!), so I substituted it with something called Granny’s Apple Pie Moonshine - an apple cider/whiskey-based distillation produced by a local small batch distillery. This made it somewhat sweeter than perhaps it should have been, but it was some good! (as they say in the Maritimes 😊). Thanks again to you both… it’s always a pleasure!
One of the only cocktails my dad would drink, so I grew up loving them. Definitely going to give this upscale version a whirl with an amaretto from my local distillery.
I find that the "old school" amaretto sour gets way too sweet, and that the Morgenthaler variation does make up for that, but there are so many good flavour pairings that go well with almond. Apple is definitely one. Apricot, pear, peach, maple, plum, cherry... So many ways to play with and tweak this cocktail.
Amaretto famously goes well with coffee in tiramisu so a coffee liquer and amaretto drink could be a tiramisu themed drink. Some sorta chocolate garnish Just a thought… tiramisu even is made with egg whites
Amaretto sours were the drink that got me into making cocktails. Current specs are: 25ml fresh lemon juice 15ml sugar syrup 1 egg white 1 dash Angostura bitters 10ml Cointreau 10ml Jameson Caskmates: Stout 40ml Disaronno Will have to give the apple brandy a try.
Loved the new condensed intro and the goofy energy in this one! I love Morgenthaler's recipe and I just picked up a bottle of Laird's bonded. Making this tonight!
Keen to try this. I’ve made Morgenthaler’s recipe, but with cognac instead of bourbon and it’s great. Tonight I dug in my in-laws cabinet and found some B&B (Benedictine and Brandy) and used that instead. It was also nice.
Love the video and the fun idea of mentioning what "cocktail day" it is. I've swapped in Applejack for whiskey sours before but never thought of doing the same in an amaretto sour. I recently switched from Desarona to Luxardo, and this seems like a great opportunity to try it out on. Thanks again, guys, and cheers 🍻
When I started working at a bar in Chicago I asked the great bartender, Damien, to make me an amaretto sour with di saronna and not the well amaretto and he said I couldn't tell the difference. He set up a blind test with two shots of amarettos and I picked up the first shot, gave it a smell and knew it was the di saronna. Dang if it hasn't become so expensive now so it's a rare treat for me to get a bottle for myself. But at that price I have to encourage myself to use the fresh fruit in my (Martha Stewart's) sour mix recipe. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories!
My fav version is morgenthaler’s but with Bardstown bourbon’s new rye whiskey that is finished in toasted cherry barrels. That cherry note with the amaretto is just perfect
Fantastic. Can’t wait to try this. Have a bottle of Amaretto that I haven’t touched in years. Same with the apple Brandy. So many bottles I need to find new drinks for. Yeah!!!!
Amaretto sour was my cocktail of choice when I first started drinking in my 20s. I definitely burned out on them. Now that I’m in my 40s and my husband likes to make craft cocktails (which I love) I am looking forward to trying your version and seeing if I can rekindle my love for this drink!
The Amaretto Sour was my first ever cocktail back in 2001 (liqueur+sour mix), and it remained my favorite for years, until I discovered the art of craft cocktails. After that, I quickly realized its shortcomings. Morganthaller’s recipe rejuvenated my love for this drink. However, I, was not using cask strength (it was probably Bulleit), and I quite liked the balance. I have a bottle of Calvados I’ve never used for anything. Perhaps I’ll need to give this recipe a try. Thanks Anders.
Long time viewer, first comment - just gotta say I love your videos, very inspiring! The amaretto sour is my go to drink, make it almost every week and I've been through a ton of variations. Never tried it with apple brandy though so that's something new I'll have to do. I like it with equal parts Amaretto and bourbon or even rye actually. I've spiked it with some scotch too once or twice for a little bit of smoke. Anyway, the reason I took to the keyboard is the lack of Angostura - to me a cornerstone in this drink and knowing you like it so much I'm surprised it's not in your version! I have at least two good dashes in the shaker and one or two drops in the foam for garnish. I guess the apple could take the Angos place so I'll have to try that. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Made this (like I make all of your cocktail recipes) for the family tonight. They all loved it! Have to say though, adding at least a half ounce of bourbon really helps this drink
Yes! The old amaretto and sour mix was the first cocktail I loved at the dive bar we were young. It was that or rum and coke or beer or tequila shots… I enjoy the improved versions occasionally now and I can’t wait to try yours with apple brandy!
Wow! I just learned that I've been making Amaretto Sours wrong for years now. I've always made it with Triple Sec instead of Bourbon, probably because it was one of the first cocktails I ever made and I didn't have Bourbon at the time, but my wife and I absolutely love it so I'm not going back now. 😅
One of my top 10 Drinks! My girlfriend and I love the cocktail with a bit of fresh orange juice in it. The orange goes really well with the almondy amaretto. For her its only amaretto, I like it with a bit of monkey shoulder. It gives the drink a honey esk sillage.
Amaretto is by far my favorite cocktail. I've made them with about a dozen different amaretto bottles, but Luxardo is probably my favorite one. And I personally don't like Morgenthaler's recipe as written on his website. I think 1/4 ounce of cask-proof or 1/2 ounce of 80 proof is just enough to add a little bit of dimension to the drink without overpowering it. And replacing simple syrup with demerara also adds a nice touch. I've tried replacing the bourbon with other spirits, but I hadn't thought of apple brandy, sounds interesting. One of the better attemps was Grand Marnier. I'd absolutely love to try it with a sour cherry liqueur
I did drink Amaretto sours in the 70’s…might have preferred Amaretto slammers…probably an immature approach, and more for effect but tasty nonetheless! 😊 I look forward to trying your recipe! I thoroughly enjoy your content and many of my friends enjoy my application of your content!😂
I recently had the unfortunate occasion of not been able to use eggs OR aquafaba in the bar. So I switched to limoncello cream. It produces enough and thick foam that lasts without any distracting flavor. However because it is sweet you have to remove the syrop and adjust the lemon juice accordingly to how sweet the limoncello you can find is.
When I make my amaretto sours at home, I’ll usually do it with skrewball whiskey. It has all the flavours you’d expect up front, but with a peanut butter finish. I’ll usually skip the simple syrup due to the sweetness from the whiskey, otherwise same ratios. Cheers!
This was my drink of choice when I first started drinking/clubbing. I haven't had an amaretto sour in ages, but now I have to add your version back into my rotation. Thanks for always elevating the staples!
I love the Morgenthaler version, but then again... I am a whisky/bourbon drinker. I read below that someone uses rye, that is also something to try. But I gotta get me a bottle of applejack, this looks very very interesting.
love this revamp of Jeff’s revamp! I heard about Jeff’s about a year ago and loved it as I am a fan of the overproof whisky… and I guess that’s what I enjoyed, the bourbon;)) made it the exact Morgenthaler way with my favourite bourbon, Booker’s. which is around 130 proof making it stand up nicely to all the amaretto and lemon craziness. also, used Lazzaroni amaretto. Your idea with the apple jack is great too and someone in the comments smartly suggested Cognac, good ideas. after trying Jeff’s I was so blown away that the drink was.. drinkable that further experimentation never crossed my mind. but now, thanks to you, further experimentation IS indeed. everything will stay the same but we’ll sub out the whisky/a.brandy/cognac with an almond friendly spirit. I’m thinking a nice Jamaican rum with some good hogo… Smith&Cross definitely goes with almond because orgeat… TO THE BAR
The Amaretto Sour is one of my favorites from college back in the 90s. So we were anxious to try your recipe. We had to sub Captain Morgan Sliced Apple Rum for the apple brandy because we live in Alabama, and when you go to the ABC store and ask if they stock apple brandy you’ll either get laughed at or a look like you’re crazy. Other than that, we followed your exact recipe and it is AMAZING! We’ll have to grab a bottle of apple brandy the next time we’re in Tennessee or Georgia (which have far better selections of spirits) because we would love to try the recipe as you created it.
Instead of bourbon I've been using a high rye or a straight rye myself. This makes me now want to try changing it up with different things like cognac and if i'm feeling really frisky perhaps and Irish whiskey for those butter cookie undertones.
The first bar I worked at made Ameretto sours with 1 part Ameretto, 2 parts margarita mix. I thought it was the nastiest drink on the planet. When I came across the bourbon variant, I actually started to like the Ameretto sour as a dessert cocktail. But when people would order one, they would send it back disgustedly. Your variant is genius and I can't wait to try it at the bar
Haven’t had amaretto sour. But have had bourbon amaretto sour. 1 oz each bourbon, amaretto, simple syrup, and lemon juice, 2 dashes black walnut bitters, half egg white, garnish with nutmeg.
Amazing video as always! Will definitely try that recipe. 😃 Fun fact about amaretto tho, although it tastes like almonds is it not necessarily an almond liqueur since it's often made with apricot kernels and sometimes peach and cherry pits.
One of my favourite drinks to make and consume. I usually add a couple of dashes of Angostura Bitters to enhance it instead of bourbon as I don't like whiskey, and always aqua faba instead of egg so it's vegan friendly! 👍
Always been a fan of the Godfather sour, and Morgenthaler's version. Need to try your take on it! Also I just got myself a bottle of Cocchi Vermouth di Torino because it seems you like it's one of your facorites. What cocktails do you think I should make with it to get the best experience?
This amaretto sour sounds great! I have had one at a bar a few times that has lazzaroni amaretto, wild turkey 101 bourbon, lustau amontillado sherry, demerara, lemon, lime, hazelnut oil, black walnut bitters, and egg white and it was incredible.
Great video. I'll definitely have to try this one. I like the Morgenthaler amaretto sour, but I can see how apple brandy and amaretto would go well together.
Amaretto, pronounced the way you do is more international as the “a” is sounded out as “ah” in many languages. Loved these when first ordering cocktails in the ‘80-90’s.
The timing of this is hilarious! In the last week I had just tried a whiskey sour with Amaretto and loved it. I didn't know there was a whole history to the drink.
Oh wow, Anders, this is fabulous! I used Amaretto di Mombaruzzo, Jack Daniel‘s Apple Liquor and my home made fermented demerarra sirup. My girlfriend loved it, drank it in 3 seconds flat, and now wants more! Thanks for a great recipe :-)
I just discovered the Amaretto Sour. Di Sarona made them as a canned coctail, but discontinued them after I fell in love with them. Of course! Question about the egg wites. Do you use the more watery whites or the thicker whites that hold onto the yolk? For a perfect fried egg you need to let the watery white drain using a strainer and the thicker whites are better for cooking.

My very first sip of alcohol was an amaretto sour, back in the mid 90s. I was nearly 20, and it was delicious! And very sweet, but I like sweet.

More like late 90s/early 2000s, but yes.

Sounds about right

This is fantastic! If you swap the apple brandy for rye whiskey, it cuts the sweetness a little and gives it more body.

Exactly what i was thinking…to the bar - wonder if i even have any amaretto stashed away.
Great idea! I like orgeat - now I’m thinking of other combos- orgeat instead of amaretto plus bitters, and trading rye and brandy….or a bit of both.
This is the way. The spice of the rye offsets the sweetness this drink can have with bourbon. It's just fantastic.
Ohh I love it that way too buddy

Some sorta chocolate garnish
Just a thought… tiramisu even is made with egg whites
Amaretto sours were the drink that got me into making cocktails. Current specs are:
25ml fresh lemon juice
15ml sugar syrup
1 egg white
1 dash Angostura bitters
10ml Cointreau
10ml Jameson Caskmates: Stout
40ml Disaronno
Will have to give the apple brandy a try.
Loved the new condensed intro and the goofy energy in this one! I love Morgenthaler's recipe and I just picked up a bottle of Laird's bonded. Making this tonight!
You're all set. Enjoy the weekend!
Love Amaretto. I usually make a quick Godfather on the rocks, Amaretto and rye whisky.
This is easily one of my favs. thanks!
That is a really great drink. The applejack and the amaretto really play well off each other. This one is going in the rotation for sure!
It was that or rum and coke or beer or tequila shots…
I enjoy the improved versions occasionally now and I can’t wait to try yours with apple brandy!
Wow! I just learned that I've been making Amaretto Sours wrong for years now. I've always made it with Triple Sec instead of Bourbon, probably because it was one of the first cocktails I ever made and I didn't have Bourbon at the time, but my wife and I absolutely love it so I'm not going back now. 😅
That’s how I’ve always had it too! Amaretto, Triple Sec, simple syrup, and Lemon/Lime juice
Merci beaucoup, Anders !
My wife's favorite cocktail... and I'll be whipping up this awesome new version for her to try. Thanks!
An AMARETTO lover is here! Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe. Definitely gonna try this.
One of my top 10 Drinks! My girlfriend and I love the cocktail with a bit of fresh orange juice in it. The orange goes really well with the almondy amaretto. For her its only amaretto, I like it with a bit of monkey shoulder. It gives the drink a honey esk sillage.
I love amaretto sours! My favorite version so far is made with dark rum. Your version sounds so I'll have to try it out.
Not something I will be trying. But as always I absolutely love the content. Your personality is so engaging and an absolute treat for us viewers.
Appreciate the kind words! Cheers
I fell in love last summer with a riff on the amoretto sour that had abricot in it. I'l surely try your recipe.
I love Amaretto, and will often drink it straight after a nice meal. It’s definitely a dessert booze.
It's my partner's favorite drink. Sometimes I make a classic and sometimes I make a Morgenthaler. She likes both. I think she will like this one too.
Dude been waiting for you to do this video since I’ve known you! It’s my favourite drink. It got me into making cocktails! And I love it! Great video!
Fabulous! I’m a fan of the Amaretto Sour from the 1980s. Yours is magnificent straight up!
love this revamp of Jeff’s revamp!
I’m thinking a nice Jamaican rum with some good hogo… Smith&Cross definitely goes with almond because orgeat…
TO THE BAR
Looks great! I've always used 2 or dashes of angostura bitters in my Amaretto Sours, should I not?
amaretto sours are one of my fave cocktails to make... can't wait to try your recipe anders
I sure do love Amaretto sour. And normally I do the Morgenthaler version. And now you gave me a new one to try. Thank you!
Hope you enjoy this one. Cheers
Found your channel a few weeks ago,
I’m not really a drinker but I will try this. Sounds like something up my alley
So happy this came out on National Amaretto Sour Day! Very timely.
One of my favourite drinks to make and consume. I usually add a couple of dashes of Angostura Bitters to enhance it instead of bourbon as I don't like whiskey, and always aqua faba instead of egg so it's vegan friendly! 👍
The Amaretto Sour was the first cocktail I ever ordered and was what got me into making cocktails, very excited to try this version
I’m curious if it would be good with 3/4 oz lemon juice and no syrup instead? Bring down the sweetness a little?
Always been a fan of the Godfather sour, and Morgenthaler's version. Need to try your take on it! Also I just got myself a bottle of Cocchi Vermouth di Torino because it seems you like it's one of your facorites. What cocktails do you think I should make with it to get the best experience?
Az always comes thru with best soundtracks!
Amaretto sours were the first cocktails I started making at home about a year ago. Im excited to give this recipe a try!
The timing of this is hilarious! In the last week I had just tried a whiskey sour with Amaretto and loved it. I didn't know there was a whole history to the drink.
This is my moms favorite drink. Been making it this way for some time. She loves them. The Lairds is a fantastic recommendation!
The Amaretto Sour is OK. But the Amarguinha Sour (Amarguinha being a Portuguese almond bitter liqueur) is amaaaaazing!
Amarreto Sours are my favorite drink. Thanks for a new version. 🎉
Nice update to Amaretto sour!
In lack of apple brandy in my bar I’ll try with some cognac tonight.
Even when I "know" the drink, you always show something new on it, thanks for all the tips! 🙌
While not an Amaretto Sour drinker myself, my wife is, so I'm looking forward to trying this out. Thanks!
