I live in Portland, and have been to Hubers many times.
I'd recommended one little trick they do, which is to rim both the outside and the inside of the glass with sugar. That way, the carmelized sugar runs down into the drink and you get a nice little kick of it every sip. It's deeeelicious!
man this is such a good channel.
Congrats on 500k!!
Yay! Something new to have at brunch!
I have had these at Hubers in Portland and they make them tableside and usually have a dedicated server just for this purpose. Believe me, the guy as always running, even lunchtime during the week. Hubers itself is an amazing restaurant and cannot say enough good about it. Great food, great service, great ambiance.
Hubers is also known for roasted turkey dishes. The Spanish Coffee tableside was very fun to watch
Oooooh this looks GOOD! Thanks for the recipe, been looking for a use for my 151!
This looks great. I am currently watching your videos in a country where you cannot have alcohol( on a year long deployment non military). It reminds me of home where I follow your channel for drink recipes that I would mix up for my girlfriend and I. It brings a little bit of home to a far off place. Keep up the good work Anders. I can't wait to get back to the good old USA and try a few of these new cocktails. Cheers
Valentine’s Day drink! Yes!
Reminds me of the Rudesheimer Koffee. Delicious desert finish.
Thanks a lot, see you on next time
Muchas gracias, Nos vemos a la proxima.
Saludos desde Bogotá.
Spanish coffee is one of my go-to drinks on a cold snowy weekend. So good!
stunning, will definitely have to try this
I'm hosting brunch tomorrow and this timing could not be better
That looks very nice. Love the orange and coffee together. This is fun.
It looks delicious
The Vintage Press Restaurant in Visalia, CA used to do a similar cocktail, swapping out the rum for Galliano liqueur, and serving it in a long-stemmed burgundy wine glass. They called it The Flaming Press. It’s been close to 40 years since I’ve had that cocktail, yet I still remember it vividly.
As far as I know, The Vintage Press is still open, but it’s been 40 years since I lived there.
I looked it up on yelp and it is open! Thank you so much looks like they have really good drinks and fancy bourbon which I’ve been looking for thanks again
fire, coffee, booze! yeah - bring it on!
I live in Portland and have never been there. It’s cool to hear that this was created at Hubers! I’ll have to go try it now!
I’m going to Portland in august & this joint was on my list, I will let you know how good it is! Great videos btw, love your channel Anders!
Anders and Az, as a video editor and cocktail enthusiast, your videos are such a delight for me. Thanks for all of your great content and excellent work all around!
Yeah, as someone else mentioned, they make great versions of this, Sexy Mexican, in Mexico. Tequila, Grand Marnier, Kahlua, coffee, ice cream, cherry garnish. The liquor is lit, poured between 2 tin gravy boats a foot or so apart in the air, then down into your coffee glass. The tins are warmed over hot flame before adding the liquors. It's quite the spectacle to see. I've had these many times over coastal Mexico, Caribbean and Pacific sides, including the Baja. Anders, you need a trip to Mexico :-)
Anders, your my hero! Keep all that coming
In the mid 90s I encountered something similar in Cabo San Lucas. They did it with 2 metal tins with handles. Pouring the rum back and forth while burning and the lights in the place down low so you could see the blue flame spiral around the poured booze. I also recall that they would bring out shaker of cinnamon and shake it over the still burning booze. The powder would burn off in a shower of sparks adding to the show. After the fire was out they would add back some rum and the Kahlua, They usually finished with vanilla ice cream and coffee. Less of a refined drink but an amazing show.
This one looks incredible 😍
Been there...done that!! They're also known for their turkey dinners. Great place...wonderful food and service is top notch. The Spanish Coffee production is something to see!!!
Been watching Anders since ~10k subscribers, and you are still the most interesting and most entertaining drinks channel. Plus you reinvigorated my Old Fashion joy several years ago.
100% worth the trip to Huber’s. On my first ever trip out there a buddy took me to Hubers and I fell in love with it…and the Spanish Coffee!
I had to laugh, but can totally see your point - make one and then everyone else wants to have one! Having a drink that’s also an experience is the way to enjoy the cocktails!
Anders I mean this with full intent, ily and the recipes you provide us 🤗
Having just dug out from the storm in Nova Scotia, I’d really like to try this one (our usual is Irish coffee), but I have two questions… 1) how can you be sure your glass won’t shatter when it’s on fire for that long, and 2) must the rum be overproof to burn? If the answer to #2 is yes, then I’ll have to venture out! Continuing to love your stuff! Cheers!!
Looks really good ❤
Hi Anders…..what a spectacular demonstration and presentation👏👏👌👌……I agree-it’s a thing of beauty…WELL DONE!😁😁…..have a wonderful weekend and as always CHEERS!🥃🥃
Excellent recipe!
I made at least 12 Spanish Coffees when my parent's bar was the only one open during the ice/snow. I always have fun making them although they are a little time consuming.
Yessss! I had this here in STL at a fancy restaurant. Had no idea what it was at that point. Once I had it I was obsessed. I featured it this year on my 25 cocktails of Christmas. It also translates great into an espresso martini.
Yum, can never have too many coffee cocktails
Hey Anders, do you have a video on which liqueurs can age, which can’t, which should be chilled? How do we take care of our bar? Love the videos
I had my first Spanish Coffee at The Doctor's Office in Seattle (great bar!) - they make the whole thing into a spectacle with lights lowered in the bar and a soundtrack with choreographed flourishes and extra flame moments (with a cinnamon shaker). One of my favorite cocktail moments and a delicious beverage to go with the show!
At Huber's and most places in Portland, they also grate some nutmeg over the open flame to send little sparks everywhere, which is pretty fun.
Most likely came from Baja, the whole flair thing in food is done a lot in los cabos, tijuana and ensenada, the cesar salad as well it was exciting because it was made with some flair table side, the cocktails as well and the carajillo what made it different from the Spanish one was pretty much using fire as flair and mexican kahlua instead of other coffee liqueurs from Europe.
brilliant
I just watched the bartender make one of these in Huber’s about 45 minutes ago. They didn’t sugar the rim and were very flamboyant with the pours into the glass. Was mostly show but the patrons really enjoyed them from what I saw
I think this would be my favorite drink. I am determined to try one. I just need to find someone to make if for me.
We need this cocktails!
Gracias Anders! If you're ever in Jersey City stop by 87 Sussex, you're the reason I've made some dramatic improvements in making cocktails. Life changing!
Anders - we live in Portland, been to Hubers many times and love your channel. Clearly, you should come to Portland!
Great show! 😉👍
Saludos desde México, me encantan tus videos
Yay for the Portland shoutout! Folks should definitely experience the theatrics of the Spanish Coffee preparation at Huber’s. Definitely worth a visit 🔥
Huber's is still going, fun place. When people order them in other bars around town, the bartenders all get pissed cuz its such a pain in the ass. Cheers!
Was wondering if you'd been! Hope this did Huber's justice. Cheers
Let's go Portland!!!
The version for Spanish coffee in the Netherlands is with licor 43 instead of coffee- and orange liqueur. This seems way better have to try!
Great as always my go to bartender
My problem is that I live in Hooterville. What that means is premixed margaritas, lots of beer on tap, and a lot of low and bourbon and tequila on the bars around here. I’m pretty sure if I were to go order this at one of those establishments, their head would explode.I’m glad I found your channel channel. Otherwise I would never know about all of these potential delicious concoctions.
Ok…have to admit that looks like a delicious drink. Enjoyed learning another drink while I’m drinking your Sazerac recipe…which I love!!! Keep the great recipes/drinks coming!!
Gonna try that
very nice
Sounds yumm Anders! Looking forward to trying--->next weekend. Hopefully I won't set my hair on fire and get buhnt up 🤪
Have you ever made or had an Asiático Coffee
From Cartagena Spain? Excellent drink!! Love your videos!!
Vos sos muy simpático! Español argentino!
I dont drink coffee and probably wont buy coffee liqueur ever but still watch the videos. So entertaining! Cheers.
Hi Anders, I was at the liquor store looking for a good coffee liqueur over the Christmas holiday, and never have been real happy with Kahlua at all, and whoomp there it was…GRIND Espresso liqueur, says it was created by bartenders, so we tried it. Dude, if you haven’t tried it you really should! We’ve tried 3 flavors (don’t know if there are others); Mocha flavored is good, the Regular Espresso is better, and the Caramel flavored is my favorite. No joke, GRIND is the bomb!!!
Pretty. A bit of a fuss to do at home though. I’d order one.
Rum ✅️ coffee ✅️ Anders approved ✅️ Sounds good to me! Cheers!
Was thinking this would be something with Licor 43 so I'm surprised! Cheers!
Jake's Crawdad also has adopted the Huber's Spanish Coffee flare. Old bars, same idea. Portland through and through. It's been a bit, but same idea. Low-light bars in any case.
Random baking note: you can caramelize sugar in the oven in advance to make this drink a little more efficiently and safely. Spread sugar onto a baking pan and bake at 325 for around 2 hours until the color of dark sand, stirring every 30 minutes or so.
Proud to be from Portland! Might want to make people aware that you have to use tempered glass for this or it could shatter with the flame.
Oh yum
Question. Is it safe to flame liquor in any bar glassware or does the glass have to have a special property in it? Just wondering if the flames could damage the glass or release toxins.
And if you like that PDX drink, The Heathman used make “steamers” with steamed milk and a shot or two of various liqueurs served in a Champagne Flute.
Gran Marnier, Baileys, Chamboard… or mixing.
Where did you get the yellow and blue flannel shirt? I want to order one for myself. Thanks!
I LOVE coffee drinks ! Is that a bottle of Blantons back there. I’ve only heard tails of blantons
I'll have to head out to Huber's Cafe for one of these. I don't live far from there. Looks like a great place!
Enjoy it. Will probably do the same whenever I get out that way. Cheers
Are you able to make your own coffee and orange liqueurs? I'm waiting for mine to be ready so I can make drinks like the one you presented nicely today.
BRUH!!!….
KEEP THE COFFEE DRINKS COMING!!!
Coffee + Booze = 😍🤩😊😎
Almost like a Greenlandic coffee (like Irish coffee). If I remember correctly you mix the whiskey and Kahlua, heat it until it can hold a flame. Then pour in the hot coffee. Add lightly whipped cream on top. And last but not least light up the Grand Marnier in a spoon and pour over the whipped cream (looks a bit like the northern lights or that's the idea anyway). Supposedly it's from a hotel in Nuuk. Hope you try it.
Idk if you’ve heard of it before but there’s a spiked coffee, one actually from Spain, that is called Asiatico. It’s a really interesting drink with Licor43 and brandy and it tastes amazing, would love to see you try it
Wow. I've never been this early. Hey Anders. Been watching your channel for a while. Love the content and you inspired my home bar and mixology adventure.
I've had Spanish coffee at Huber's, they definitely make a show of it. It's pretty dang tasty too.
I just want to say, I've been here almost since the beginning of your channel, and love it. Now that you are getting big, please stay true to the format (making cocktails). There are others that have strayed from said format, and their channel(s) are now often a waste of time.
How would Mr. Black work out for this recipe. I’m planning on trying this one out. Thanks for sharing.
Not sure if you're a fan, btu we've always eschewed the regular Kaluah because it's overly sweet. Instead, we've gotten the Kaluah Especial, which is more intense coffee flavor, higher proof, and far less sugary. That said, there are a number of less sweet coffee liqueurs out there! I do like the idea of a spiked coffee and this one has real interest, though seems to be far more work than others.
Hi, This may be a silly question. In making a simple syrup, can I use Turbinado sugar instead of Demerara sugar? I've been making Old Fashioneds for myself and friends, and getting great reviews!!
How do you keep your heavy cream from separating?? Mine always gets chunky when I float it
Can the glass get too hot and crack? Should I be looking for a special kind of glass this drink?
Who needs a fireplace when you have Spanish Coffee!
Hey Anders! Just a quick question: other than to caremalize the sugar, is there any other reason to light it on fire? That is to say, if you burn the sugar another way, will it change the flavor? I ask because my wife gave me a drink smoker set for Christmas which includes a torch. Can I just torch the sugar? Watching you flame the drink is awesome. But I don't know if I'd like watching me do it...😅
Good question. You could definitely use a torch to caramelize the sugar. If you go that route, you don't need to use an overproof rum (unless you want to). A nice aged rum will taste great. Hope this helps! Cheers
IIRC Three Dots used to have a variation of this on their Bamboo Room menu, complete with pyrotechnics lol
Anders, how particular should I be about the overproof rum? Think I could get away with OFTD?
Is that the ll bean river driver shirt? Looks nice
For the coffee liquor, would Mr Blacks work?
Little unfortunate that the Hubers version is really only okay, but regardless, the presentation is fun and even a mediocre Spanish coffee is still an EXCELLENT cocktail!
Also, when making at home, I highly recommend Goslings Black Seal overproof. I find that it complements the coffee very nicely.
How does the heat from the flames not destroy the glass? And do you need to use a special type of glass for this to work?
Great question! This glass can withstand the heat, but it's also thin - so it doesn't hold the heat for long. A thick glass holds the heat longer, so it's more likely to crack when cooler ingredients touch it
Well, my glass split in half while flaming my drink, after my wife's worked just fine, so I wouldn't suggest using anything but those specific Libbey glasses.
Soy Español y conozco el carajillo pero el cafe llamado Español nunca lo habia oido se " inventaria" en el extranjero ( o Hispanoamerica) y por algun motivo por exotismo lo llamarian asi ya que no es de España
Hi Anders, this was put up by Jeffrey Morgantaller a few weeks ago. I have made it 3 times since to that recipe. It is a lovely drink.
