This series has given me a lot more perspective in regards to what's kusoge and what's just a really bad idea.

The riding on enemies mechanic is used once or twice in the later levels, at least in the NES version, to get a little more height to your jump.

Some decent music in this game though

As clunky as it is, I always like when a game of this vintage completely switches up the gameplay style in such a drastic way, they could have had the auto scrollers use the same sprite as the regular side scrolling stages, but chose to put in extra work, coding and sprites just for this which, hey, that is some pretty commendable effort at least.

I remember playing the NES version, yeah it wasn't great. I wonder if 'big mode' was a Japanese only thing? if not I certainly never got far enough to see it. Also can absolutely relate at 2:24, haha! my wife's cat has a tendency to get in the way of the TV as well.

No, Big Mode is in the international versions, but you don't see it until you've cleared 4 regular stages, though whoever wrote the English manual may not have been fully informed of this change as it once states, "You begin in Big Mode 1." I decided to view this version in an emulator and learned that in Big Mode, only Dutch and the floor are backgrounds; the Predator is actually rendered with sprites! I suspected this since the two characters aren't kept a set number of tiles away from each other, and even on good mappers the Famicom can't be relied on to change the scroll position anywhere but between whole rows as it draws the picture downward.

Watching this, I think the biggest problem is how dated this game looks: 'Big stages' aside, this game essentially looks like something from 1985.

I love the first Zelda game, as I'm blinded by nostalgia, but I dislike Zelda 2. I often find the game to be overly challenging, even if it can be fun at times.

It's one of those games where you have to learn the little quirks, but it's not THAT hard. Heck, master jumping attacks and you'll conquer enemies no problem
