That "oil" that you took out of the rear-end is actually called cushion grease my vac had the same thing in it. I later found this out and had an old timer tell me this. And I wish I would have put it back in cause it ran really quiet with it in there and now I can hear the gears. So my recommendation to you is as long as it not metallic long or has broke metal chunks in it put it back in you won't regret it like I do.
