This is exactly what YES did back in '71 with their "Fragile" album, they had 4 songs written by the band together and 5 songs written by individual members of the band with their own instrument (or voice) as the focal point of the arrangement scattered between the songs written by the band as a whole. Makes for nice albums with lots of variation.

I write 95% of our songs, like this; starting with our drummer: he plays, I riff, until we like something, then we build... I then develop the song structure, our bassist improves it, vocals comes up with melody, I write lyrics, vox rewrites lyrics, and when we put it all together, we play with it in different ways, until we find a standard... it's mostly based on having fun and each of us focusing on our strengths. it always produces something I like much more than the songs I write on my own, the whole way through... the songs we write together always end up surprising me and I tend to like the song more over time, whereas the songs I wrote on my own, tend to disgust me over time.
    Great video!

Sure you could go to the next track but you were normally restricted to 24 tracks. A lot of techniques were developed and improvised to make room or clear tracks usually by ping ponging or bouncing tracks together.

As a solo artist i start with whatever instrument i have the idea for first. I might have a drum beat in my head i record that first. Sometimes i get an idea for a bass line so i start with that. Same with guitar. Just depends on how you want to work with it. Most of the time it works out well.

In my experience ideas coming first on strings (synth included) flows better than starting with drums or vocals

I just found your channel, but your guitar playing just inspired me so much man. There is so much boring metal out there and this is straight up the opposite. I needed to hear this.
Also fun fact, I specifically only write riffs to drums that are laid out first!

Awesome approach, I have tried it and it works really nice when one feels stuck on using the same kind of riffs. It also helps to get out of our comfort zone and experiment with other rhythmic possibilities. I used this approach on my upcoming album and it worked wonders. Thanks for sharing, you are an incredible player...I subscribed. Greetings from Puerto Rico!

1:45-2:10 I loved the dissonance into Jazx chords. Something I've strived to do and Jinjer actually succeeded at. I'd love to hear more of that, hell I'd love to create more of that but I struggle with getting the dissonance to come through.

Damn the second run thru of the second beat, the riff starts at about 3:16 and ends at the two down chugs at 3:20. That dissonant thing before the slide down into the down chugs. SO KILLER. Wish I could figure it out.
