    Here in Central Florida has been unbearably humid and hot. I put my garden bed to rest with cover crops like sweet potatoes, cowpeas, peanuts and marigolds. I am taking a break from the garden only watering when necessary in the late afternoon and enjoying the A/C inside. I love to see your garden thriving, especially in the Polycrub.

    Hi, here in Ireland, it's been the worst spring and summer. Luckily we decided early on this year to get a polycarbonate greenhouse in addition to our 3 year old polytunnel, so we've already harvested garlic, carrots, onions, celery, some cucumbers and a few beans and peas. On the way are tomatoes, a single melon (!), sweetcorn, sweet potatoes, chillies and more carrots.
    Last year was so wet the garlic outside would not store well and we got very little sweetcorn.
    Our red cabbages are finally forming heads, partly thanks to the cooler temperatures and yes, mostly due to near non-existence of butterlies too this year.
    It is relatively depressing and we've hardly sat outside on our furniture either.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Outdoor garlic and onions seem to be suffering from rust right across Britain. I've seen quite a few people start planting theirs undercover this year! You also have my condolences on the weather - Ireland certainly takes the brunt of it coming off the Atlantic. Hang in there 💚

    Last Spring and Summer here in Australia sounds like yours this year. We had prepared for a dry summer but that soon changed very quickly and I found that we were making decisions to create poly covers to protect our beds from the excessive rain and as we are on a farm and catch all of our water in rain tanks we made the decision to hand water everything that way we controlled the moisture levels. Autumn was very wet with torrential rain and now winter has arrived and we are a lot warmer than normal and we are finding that our flowering bulbs are already beginning to bloom. We’ve recently finished our 5m x 8m poly high tunnel so that we can get things inside and will be starting all of our spring seed next month which is our last month of winter. If Im being honest Im worried what our summer is going to be like…wet….dry….but regardless we learned some really valuable lessons last season and have found ways to adapt. Thankyou for the tips about striking the lavender. Ive tried unsuccessfully a few times last year and will give your method a try as I want to plant out a full hedge of lavender for our bees and found that the culinary lavender seems to be handling the weird weather better than the English lavenders here. Many Thanks for your tips. Cheers Theresa - Australia

      @@helenklingberg1975 We are on the south coast where the bushfires hit in 2019/2020 Ive been a bit worried that we might get a hot summer as the bush behind our property has just exploded due to the weird weather we have had. We will be mulching very heavily this year but as we made the poly covers last year we have folded those up and should we have to get them out they are packed in the shed really to go. As our soil here was depleted of everything from the bushfire we are growing in raised beds. Im hoping for an ordinary summer but we haven’t seen that in a few years now. Poor Mother Nature just doesn’t know what’s going on. At this time of year I shouldn’t have beans growing but I do.

    Haskap are native to Canada and I have grown them for years. There is an excellent table online that cross references the appropriate pollinator by variety. I have never known them to be self pollinators and they are sold as companions here. I grow Tundra, Borealis and Aurora and prefer the Aurora and Tundra for picking as they are larger berries. It is an annual race to beat the birds to the patch. I have hardly even seen a cabbage butterfly this year!! My Zone 3 garden has the same problems as yours with a cold, long spring, then drought, and now we are burning up at 35C and the forest is on fire again. Your polycrub and greenhouse plants are lovely.

    Can you leave the wormery outside over winter? The summer here in the Seattle area of the USA has also been colder than normal. We started off super hot with an early heat wave where the temps got up to 97 and were in the 90s for a few weeks. But that heat fizzled out and the rest of the summer has been so much cooler and overcast than normal. Oh well, each year is different. Last summer was glorious and lasted well into October. Take care.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mine stays out all year, but the worms slow down their activities. In places where it snows or freezes, it's best to move them into a shed or unheated garage.

    Can sympathize with you regarding the Courgettes - here in the west of Ireland and in the same bed where courgette/zucchini have prospered so well before are producing great flowers, little finger sized courgette and then go rotten and drop off....
    On the other had I am dead jealous of your great crops of strawberries. I put mine in hanging baskets to keep them away from my dog who steals them(and any other fruit here get his gob near) but nothing... just loads of side shoots and no fruit.....
    Thank you for the video - will take your advice on getting more lavender, Old plants got overgrown and leggy so it is nice to know how to create new versions....

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What you can also do with your leggy lavender is re-plant it deep - I've done it before with success. This winter, dig your plants up, maybe dig a bit of grit into the planting hole, and then replant the lavender up to the first sets of green leaves. The buried stems will form roots, just like cuttings, and the plant looks a million times better :) Also, our Josie pup is becoming a strawberry and raspberry thief, too! 😂

    Hi Tanya. The summer here in Poole, Dorset has been a mix of, windy, rainy, hot, humid and unbearable, all at the same time. lol. The huge slugs have had, and indeed are still having a field day in the fruit and veg beds. There were some cabbage whites in late spring, but then they disappeared. Until about two weeks ago, when it seemed like somebody had opened the floodgates here, and now they're absolutely everywhere. It's a daily task wiping off the eggs. I am having a bit of trouble though with my german chamomile. I want to harvest it for drying, but teeny tiny caterpillars keep showing up on the flowers whilst airdrying them. These weren't visible to the naked eye when harvesting them, but only showed up when drying. I think my patch has been visited by shark moths? Have you come across this, and can i still harvest the flowers? I don't want to risk it all going to seed if i stop for too long. Appreciative of your advice, please. xx Mojo xx

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You may be right about the type of caterpillar. If they're present, you have two choices, really: leave the flowers to help encourage biodiversity or pick them and contend with caterpillars. I think many may be squeamish about using the flowers, knowing caterpillars might be inside, so it might be best to leave them. With vegetables, you can soak them in a vinegar bath to get worms, slugs, and caterpillars out, but that could affect the flavour of the chamomile. Next year, you could net your chamomile patch with veggie mesh ( gardening-naturally.link/SP7Bz ) to keep the moths from laying eggs on the flowers.

    I noticed your tomatoe leaves in the self watering container in the greenhouse are curling. Mine are too, but they are in deep metal beds in my greenhouse. Is it due to too much or not enough water? It's been difficult this year in Sequim too. So appreciate your efforts and educational style.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Joan, the leaf curl on my plants is from heat, and it's completely harmless. Though it has been cooler on average, there are still hot days inside the greenhouse and polytunnel. Yours may be curling for the same reason, but if you notice the plants sickening and not producing fruit, it could be a pathogen or herbicide poisoning. Aminopyralid contamination is still very much an issue with compost made with horse and cow manure.

That's just at my vacation home in the mountains. A rain barrel will definitely help you. Plus, rainwater is WAY better for plants than tap water or well water. So the yield will be greater.

    What is the type of liner you used in the side yard? My garden is surrounded by big trees and their roots have invaded my beds. I'm thinking of placing a liner like what you did when I redo my beds.

      There's no liner there now - the black plastic sheet was there temporarily to kill off most of the weeds. We lifted it and then piled loads of wood chip on top. The only 'weeds' to make it through are a couple of mature buddleia we left in and some bracken (ferns)

    I got seedlings from likely the same company and they’ve done really well! Such a bargain.

    When you have taken rosemary and lavender cuttings and put the plastic bag over, do you sit them in a tray and keep it watered while waiting for them to root?

      Yes, exactly.

    Rentals don't allow covered growing areas, unfortunately. Some don't allow pots unless they're flowers.
    The UK, Ireland and Europe have allotments, but they're not available in most of North America.
    Some condominium towers ban anything larger than small geraniums.
    I deliberately looked for a place I could grow at least something, so everything is in pots, in very limited shaded areas. It's a whole different way to have anything to grow, but I have. Everything is leggy, slower, and needs to be started indoors obviously in a very limited way.
    North Americans need to change their perspectives on food, lawns and people who need some ground to use for their own use.
    Community gardens have people who do the gardening but get none of the food.
    City dwelling has serious drawbacks unless people push city hall for changes.
