You MUST do this in Willemstad, CURACAO

  • Hi everyone! This is episode eight of my Dutch Caribbean series in which I travel to Aruba, Curacao (Curaçao) and Bonaire.
In this video, I explore more of Willemstad, the capital of Curacao and showcase what, in my opinion, are some of the must-do things in this beautiful city. As the thumbnail suggests, I will have some food, go to the beach and explore some sights!
The vlog starts with me visiting a local food market and trying my luck with finding a stall that sells conch. I was recommended to eat this by a friend and I finally manage to find a stall that was selling it on that day. I also engage with some locals as well as another tourist who joins me for lunch.
After lunch, I explore the colourful Pietermaai district. It was first constructed in 1675, so it is younger than Punda (which was established in 1634) but older than Otrobanda (which was established in 1707). I admire the mix of architecture and get an idea of how the locals live, as well as the hardworking Curacao population.
I then head to Mambo Beach with a local bus and take a dip in the Caribbean Sea. I also try a local banana soft drink that I saw the locals drink in the food market.
After visiting the beach, I explore more of the Punda area including a clothing shop and take in the sights such as the Queen Juliana Bridge from different vantage points. I also marvel at the colourful Handelskade from Queen Emma Bridge again.
The vlog ends with me exploring the souvenir shops on the Otrobanda side of Queen Emma Bridge, as well as the Rif Fort that was built in 1828.
I hope you enjoy this video of Willemstad and that it gives you some ideas for what to do in this beautiful city. If you haven't done it yet, please hit the LIKE and SUBSCRIBE buttons - it really helps this channel to grow and allows me to make more videos such as these for you, for free!
Please also check out my other videos on Willemstad - this is effectively 'Part 3' of the Willemstad videos in the Dutch Caribbean series.
    Happy exploring!
    Willie

Hi willie you had the best local food from the plaza .you showed the most of the places before you went to Mamboo. Mamboo one of the the best beaches of curacao, tourist love it ,easy to visit till late night. During night more activity and you have happy hour after 70m.I used to live near Mamboo .
You showed the flooting market by the venezuelan vendors ,they come from Venezuela with products in thier boats and sell .
The Local and tourist like to buy from them, because of variety and the price.

I thought you might enjoy this one, Jagadeesan! I really enjoyed the food, the walk around Pietermaai and Mambo beach. Those floating markets are very interesting too and, as you said, there is a lot of variety. Cheers for all your support my friend, it is much appreciated :)

Hi fascinating vlog on curaçao. My daughter and I are going to Aruba in August. Not been there for more than 20 years. It seems to me Curaçao is like Aruba was many years ago. Must think about doing curaçao, much more European too. We live in north wales uk. So it’s as you know a long flight . Will check out your opinion on Aruba too. 😊

Ah, Willie ... you're still having a great time in Curacao, and meeting lots more people from all over! Just love your approach to food ... eat local whatever and whenever you can!! Way to go. And you're (at least) one up on me ... I haven't yet had conch, but one of these days! And and ... bet you have another country on your go-to list, too ... Egypt! Soon? Stay safe, travel well. Thanks for sharing, as always. (BTW ... my sister-in-law lives in Brighton ... Michigan! Does that count?]

Thanks for watching Jim, as always! Hope all is well in Tucson. Loved the locals in Curacao; they are so friendly and engaging. Yep, my approach has always been to follow the locals when it comes to food (notwithstanding the guy with the McDonalds!). I'd love to visit Egypt one day - hopefully I can have a hassle-free experience with the camera as I've watched several videos about content creators running into trouble. But so much to see from a historical and natural perspective. Brighton Michigan certainly counts Jim! Haha! Have a great day across the pond :)

Another first class video from Willie thanks for showing interest on this topic with knowledge of the place especially foods and drinks but what about as stated living looks good but what costs as i bet the housing is very expensive? Nice areas thought streets and looks good place especially to invest during carefully consider thinking planning plus decision making to make a go ahead of things that would be a appreciated valuable asset for investing. Willie very grateful for your wonderful video and thanks for sharing your thoughts and explanation experiences during your journey and travels!

Looked like a great atmosphere in the restaurant, Willie. Friendly people and great food although I would have to pass on the conch as I am not a shellfish fan. Loved the guy eating a McDonalds hahaha! The coloured houses in Willemstad really are like a storybook. Every street was better than the last one. The little ones at 26:50 were beautiful. Could I live there? Yes, if the temperature was much lower! A lifetime in a Scottish climate means I would likely die within a few days in that heat😂. If you got your beach house, Willie (and you might!) what colour would you choose? I think I would have to go for the shocking pink or turquoise. The locals are clearly very proud of their town. Great vlog, full of content, as always.

    • @willieexplore

Cheers Sheila! I really had a great time and met some friendly locals who, as you say, are proud of their country. I didn't think I'd enjoy the conch as much as I did, but I am a fan of seafood overall. The guy with the McDonalds was classic, almost making a statement with his food! I have to agree with you regarding the climate, it is maybe just a touch too hot, but I'd rather have summer all year long than winter! Re colour for my house - that is actually such a tough question! I do like the idea of a teal, turquoise or even a coral. Thanks for your support - as always!

That was a bit of a mission to find that conch mate but Luli took care of you! The fruit punch looked refreshing! Local food looked a lot better than Maccy d's 😂 Fanta is made by Coca Cola so probably is the same thing (Fria means cold in Spanish)
I'm hungry now seeing your dinner 😅 Some beautiful buildings there mate! Sea is a beautiful colour as well! Let's buy that plot of land and build a youth hostel mate 😂 I hear you about the 30 degree stuff, every day would get old I think. Ah more dodgy Fanta 😂 looks like pure sugar and colourants but I bet it was nice in the hot weather
The street towards the end reminded me of a tropical version of Nyhavn in Copenhagen
What a great place to visit, looks awesome mate! Sorry I've waffled a bit 😅

That is an awesome waffle mate! Haha thanks as always for commenting! Definitely a mission to find the conch and some people were not willing to help me find something that their stall didn't sell, but got there in the end. The food, buildings and beach were all great mate. As for the soft drinks, I would still go for the blue one I had in my previous vlog but on a hot day any of those cold (Fria!) drink would suffice :) Definite similarities with Copenhagen's Nyhavn in parts. Well done on 800 subs mate - onwards and upwards! :)

Hi, Fria is not a fake Fanta. It exist for decades. The botteling company from Coca-Cola Curacao has just change the bottle to be the same logo as Fanta. Fria akways had its own house style. I don't like it that they make it looks like Fanta now. About the taste, Fria has noting to do with Fanta. It's more like Busta or KA. Like the video by the way.
