Exploring WILLEMSTAD, Curacao - Otrabanda Cultural Quarter

- Hi everyone! This is episode seven of my Dutch Caribbean series in which I travel to Aruba, Curacao (Curaçao) and Bonaire. In this video, I explore the Otrobanda (Otrabanda) neighbourhood of Willemstad, the capital of Curacao.
Otrobanda is known as the cultural hub of Willemstad, and means "the opposite side" in Papiamento, the local language. The area was established in 1707, and is connected with Punda, which was established in 1634, via the Queen Emma Bridge.
The vlog stars with me having a Curacao breakfast at the hotel, where I also admire the view of Otrobanda from the rooftop. I use this opportunity to talk about the meaning behind the word "Curacao" and different interpretations.
I then hit the streets of Otrobanda for some exploring. I visit a few clothes shop as well as a place selling lottery tickets, and engage with some locals throughout. I also explore some residential parts and learn some interesting facts about some of the houses.

Hi willie once again you showed to the world the beauty of curacao or Dushi curacao the one happy Island with friendly .You had Arepa with chicken with cassava .Arepa is south American food .best arepa from Venezuela. The building u showed with Flag and security is called Kranchi or registry office.

I just discovered the vlogs you made in Curaçao some time ago and enjoyed these a lot. At minute 37 in this video, you were wondering who this gentleman was and why this engraving was located there. Alfredo Capello Sr. was my father and he was a successful businessman in Otrobanda. He was also one of the pioneers in organizing and uniting the other businessmen and women in Otrobanda. As written on the engraving, he died in June 1992 and before that for a long time had been the owner of a small-scale department store called "La Bonanza." It was located in that building but the business went south and had to close forever in April 2005. 😪

A fascinating tour, Willie. Thank you! It seems the island is such a confusion of languages and currencies, too. I always admire people who are so multilingual and effortlessly switch from one to another!
Nice one Andy! This really was a nice day of travelling. Glad you enjoyed it! Yep, most of the locals speak four languages. You can use US Dollar anywhere in Curacao but change is mostly given in the local currency.
Not sure what those pink trees are, but they had them all over Argentina and Uruguay as well, very beautiful. The coloured buildings are also very nice. Atlantic Canada has some places that do the same, but I've always liked the diverse colours of these regions.
Loved all the variety of colours in these cities / towns re the buildings. I still wonder what makes someone pick a particular colour over another. As for the pink trees, good question! Maybe someone can help us out in the comments
Such a beautiful place, Willie. Even the more run down buildings had character with all the colour and the plants. Interesting fact about the sun glare too. The hotel and the food looked very nice. Hope the gentleman was lucky with the lotto 😊.
Thanks Sheila, I really hope those numbers brought him luck! The sun glare fact is fascinating for me, not least because of South Africa's Dutch colonial past where most of the colonial buildings are white. And let's not forget the colourful clothes in the shops too! Cheers for watching, as always

I can see why you say that! Definite similarities in architecture but no big mountain :)
I imagine the way people speak Dutch there sounds a little like Afrikaans, too, but I wouldn't know...haven't been to that part of the Caribbean yet. Anyway many thanks for sharing your videos. I've enjoyed the ones I've seen.
