- -Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

Cattle prices are really good right now…. Steers looking great….New baby probably ripped his cord falling through the barb wire…. Super nice calves….Loving the sunshine….Beautiful day in the Dakotas….

Great mother. Concerned but not aggressive. As always really enjoy your videos. Hope your calves bring top price. Your cattle price lots good our corn and bean price was much better at harvest. That is farming and ranching. Next year will be much better. God Bless.

I totally understand the culling out some steers that stick out among a group of others it affects the price. I use to go to the sales all the time . They all looked good.

With the sale of those steers, is that the ranches pay for the year or are you able sell more later.
Just depends. Some people keep the smaller to sell later. Some people will also sell the heifers later and some will keep them for brood cows.
I know this is part of life but I'm glad you aren't mean to your cattle. Sometimes I can't watch other cattlemen.....Hey have a beautiful Easter.
It’s definitely our main source of income each year but we also sell our cull cows and we cull through our heifers in the summer and sell them!
So how many head of cattle went to the sale barn? Just curious but how many head of cattle do you have now? Including calves.

I have always felt bad for cattlemen who have short-tailed and boob-eared cattle cut out at the sale barn. That said, when I buy steers to fatten for the butcher market, I look for those very ones to buy. As I say to people, I don't eat that part anyway.

What does the length of a cows ears have to do with anything?
Absolutely nothing but buyers will dock you on price pretty hard because of it. They just use it as an excuse to get a deal
Depending what region of the country you're in . In the south you'll get lots of eared cattle ( Brahma ) influenced. A good part of a sale last week had many tiger striped cattle Bradford's, Brangus . As well as some stockyards dock you if you're cattle aren't all black . Had a mix of Balancer steers and Braunvieh/Herefords and took a small payout for the off color ones.

He said around 900 lbs since weaning at 700 lbs. might be the camera angle.

Why AI your heifers, then use a bull on the cows. Could it be the size and weight the bull produces?
