Roland is so kewl a living legend that despite worth millions, uses a $100-200 combo Redington fly outfit to catch the big ole largemouth bass. I love how Roland always Keeps it real for the average fisherman or woman. Nothing pretentious about him thats what makes him Americas greatest beloved fisherman! ☺️🎣🎣🎣
You make fly fishing look so easy, heck you sitting down and making effortless perfect casts. I have been happy to watch you fish on tv since the 80's. I can't thank you enough for all the great videos! LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE!!!!!!
My favorite bass fly is the Dahlberg Diver, a deer hair bug with a conical nose. Twitch and it dives an inch under the surface and then bobs back up. Bass can't resist it. Caught a 5 lbs largemouth bass, a nice pickerel, and a huge warmouth bass on the same outing all on the D D. Also recommend the Orvis Bank Shot shooting head flyline. Greatly reduces fatigue from much fewer false casts, makes casting big bugs and poppers easier, greatly increases distance, and is especially good when sitting low in the water in a kayak, when using a regular weight forward line feels like you are casting uphill.
100 Dave Whitlock hair bugs with the correspondence could be really valuable someday! I would mount them in a display case (and fish with a few of course)!
Roland, I’ve been fishing for over 60 years now and I started fly fishing about 8 years ago and I still bass fishing, but you are so right about landing a 5 pounder on a fly rod. I caught a 3+lb largemouth on my 3 weight last year and it surprised me I could even play such a fish, but I landed her I’ve got two Lefty Kreh flyrods from TFO, an Orvis 6wt, and two White River rods from BPS, and dozens of hand tied poppers, but those Betts brand will get it done and in all sizes and have been around for decades. It’s great to see you out there being stealth, and peaceful enjoying yourself fly fishing ... loved this video.
Biggest i have caught on a fly rod is 3 1/2 lbs. Was just learning to fly fish. It was a 7 weight rod and line. Didn't know the correct way to hold the line. Now little over 30 yrs later i still have a scar on my left pointing finger where the fly line burned into it. Best scar i ever got lol. Great Show Mr. Roland love your vids.
Up here in the NW we get so trout/Salmon/Steelhead centric we ignore the Warm water species! Never a better day than float tube pop-pin and best thing, no competition and no gators! Thanks Roland!
I grew up in the 70s on Back Bay Va..My pops always fished the grass beds with a poppin bug..brings back great memories thank you...I can see him now...wading in chest deep water..cigs rolled up in his sleeve to keep them dry...and an old black straw cowboy hat loaded with poppin bugs all over it...Miss you Pop
I really enjoyed this video, Roland. It's been way too long since I fly fished for bass and bluegill. I grew up doing it and it won't be long before I'll be doing it again. Thanks.
👍👍 Professor Fly! I started flyfishing and tying flies 2 years ago..now I hardly use my 40 plus conventional rods anymore, and almost always catch fish.🎣 Great fun! Thanks for showing us “how it’s done..son”! Best wishes and God Bless Roland
Oh my gosh! I've been throwing poppers and streamers to bass for years, so I wasn't all that mesmerized by the fly rod, but the very first thing I noticed was the boat fenders being used for ready-made canoe outriggers! Slap my forehead! Why haven't I thought of that before? I enjoy rowing a canoe down small streams, so a little extra stability is always handy.. Thanks for the idea.
I loved it. And I don't mean to make you feel old, but this video reminded me of fishing with my paternal grandfather. Thank you for that. We spent many days in canoes on farm ponds. He had a fly rod and I had a bait caster. Anyway, thank you again. Oh, and nice fish.
Great memories, my wife & I fished poppers on the Snake , Brownlee and Oxbow impoundments hour before dusk 3Lb + smallies , you think there going to China as hard as they pull.. times past:) appreciate your shows keep them coming.. Mat M
This is how I started bass fishing! Clousers, deceivers, woolly buggers, and "bass bugs" work pretty great too. As water warms obviously fly fishing becomes less effective as you can't get deep enough very effectively. Anyway...that's when I start senko fishing! Great video.
Amazing fisherman and good to see several things here. I loved seeing your bass pro shop/ nitro boats in addition to the favorite rods emblems on the side of your canoe. Johnny Morris is the real deal . Dave Whitlock is the real deal also, what a talent that man is. Loved watching your talent of fly fishing, and although I'm no fly fisherman, it was easy to follow all the tips you were giving out as you applied them. Great video👍👍
You need to get those big fish on the reel so you don't have to deal with all of that slack line that will come back to haunt you. Great video, keep them coming.
When I'm fighting a big tarpon or any other big saltwater fish, I get it on the real as soon a I can. I've fished big rivers with Lefty Kreg for smallmouth where we got them on the reel after hooking them on a long cast. Fly rodding big Stripers also. For the most part, bass don't make a long run so if the water is weedy, I don't want to slack up on him by tryin to get 20-40 feet of line on the reel
My fav type of fishin lakes/ponds! I have a blast on poppers while watchin my buds troll buggers...zzzz. Poppers are so much more fun and similar to dry fly takes, but can be much more aggressive takes. Good health to ya Roland!
Great video! Shows you can have a lot of fun fishing cheaply. Couple of hundred bucks for a used canoe, another hundred for a cheap Bass Pro fly outfit and you are on the water like the great pro Roland Martin.
Roland is being way too modest, he’s been fly fishing Tarpon for many years and won tournaments. I believe he was the first guy to use an elevated casting platform on the front of a skiff.
One of my favorite ways to fish is with a fly rod. I'm in the deep south, so no trout here. Bass, Bluegill, saltwater trout, etc. Love the top water strike, sometimes ferocious, others so soft you just see the bug disappear with barely any water movement.
Its not to often you see , Roland Martin fly fishing, I'd like to see more fly fishing for top water on lake Okeechobee , you just never see it , i know, I'd love to throw top water poppers on that lake for huge bass.
I remember watching Roland catch the biggest bass I’d ever seen on a fly rod using a popper. This would have been about 1979-80. I had never seen a fishing show before. This would’ve been around 1980. It was probably on ABC wide world of sports or something. I remember thinking who is this guy? Guys get paid to fish on TV? Bass get that big? Anybody know if that video footage still exists???
Sounds like me saying outloud to myself..."match the hatch" and throwing shad flies with my fly rod...its all some of us have. When there feeding on shad there feeding on shad.
So alot of people I've fished with just want to cast out, let there lure sink to the bottom and spend the day drinking beer, but I want to catch fish, and I feel like this passive style of fishing is ineffective, I've watched tons of videos about working a sinko or a variety of other soft plastic lures, but my pals tell me to stop it, I'll never catch anything like that, just be patient and wait all day. so my question amounts to this; is working the bait more effective than just sitting a live worm on the bottom? And also, should I work a live worm like a sinko (lifting up and letting it sink down)?

Roland Martin flyfishing with flies tied by Dave Whitlock..... Legend on legend, this is a rare and precious video !

Ol Jack gave you that bumble bee fish.
Thanks Roland, I love fly fishing for bass in the summer.

Mr. Versatile! I grew up reading Livingston's books. He loved fly rodding for bass.

I have a flyrod.now to learn and practice casting. Thanks for sharing

That was a neat shot of those fish taking the lures on topwater

He is America’s Greatest fisherman 👍
100% I agree... Mr. Roland is head and shoulders above the competition.

Roland has a recent video out on attaching the fenders. Good tips on install.

If you did nothing but told us stories about the old days I would tune in every week! I love story time with Roland lol! Keep up the vids awesome

Looks like a relaxing way to fish Roland.👍😁
It's relaxing until a 5 pounder hits, then it gets heart-pounding exciting real fast
Go get them Roland you the man my boy broke his pb the other day 9.5 pounder in the rain training them right

Ever tried leather patch for straightening your leader/tippet. Work amazing
Please add equipment and links to what your fishing with in your description :) thank you

🙌🏾 he’s so incredibly modest that’s why he’s so easy to watch and listen to
Keep em coming Roland 👍🏼great video
Your Great Roland! Love the videos. #RMO
Keep em coming partner!
Good stuff Roland! 💯
Nice big bass on a small bug. You got a good bulk deal on the 100 flies.
Love it Roland...
My Grandfather had popper bugs for fly fishing when I was a young man great men must think alike.p.s Grandpa used a bamboo pole.

Great fun! I do this alot from my Yak
Hey Mr. Roland Martin...I have a Interesting suggestion....have you ever fished the banjo minnow....I think it could be a great video
Pretty cool
That bee popper is legit...
While you were tying the bubblebee, fish were surfacing all around you
Now that’s my kind of fishing, 90% of my fishing is on a fly rod, I live in trout country, bass fishing isn’t very abundant locally unfortunately
I never knew you knew how to fly fish. I'll be in your shop in February so maybe you can give me some pointers.
Its not to often you see , Roland Martin fly fishing, I'd like to see more fly fishing for top water on lake Okeechobee , you just never see it , i know, I'd love to throw top water poppers on that lake for huge bass.

I'm writing Roland Martin in on the presidential ballot in November.

Can you describe that leader again? I thought leaders or tippet were like 4 lb or very light. I thought you said 14 lb?
In that heavy Hydrilla you need a heavy leader like 14#
Enjoyed it ,stay safe
If you ever want big bass poppers let me know and if you ever get out west the California Delta is a fly Fishing Paradise.
It has been a long time since I used a fly rod.
What do you call those floats on the side of your canoe?
Very cool.
Yea son👍👍
Wooo
What size popper?
Rods and reels??
Legendary 👍
#goat
Don't move your rod to pop a fly folks... just strip line
Too many adds Roland. Great video but too many adds
