Roland's videos are very refreshing and tranquil for me on any type of day anything can be going on! Thank you Roland, (its deeper than just fishing) Ps Good luck to you and Jerry in those tournaments!!!
I remember in one of Roland's original TV episodes he caught a huge bass on a fly rod lure he made - he took a small floating Rapala, cut the lip off, removed the trebles and drilled a hole in the end for a single hook, which he epoxied in. Cool!
My favorite bass bug is the Dahlberg diver, a floating deer hair bug that dives 1" when you twitch it and then bobs back to the surface. Caught a 5 lbs largemouth bass, nice pickerel, and huge warmouth bass in one day on the same fly. That collection of Dave Whitlock hair bugs is priceless though!
Roland, I enjoy using a fly rod now and than. Have fifty bass rods but also 3 fly rods. I go outside my house here on the lake and enjoy catching bluegill to bass. I have used Dave whitlock flies for year's.🎣🐟
Hey Roland, If you put a tea kettle on the stove and hold those flies in the steam they snap back to the way they looked the day Dave tied them. It works like magic!!! But I am not telling you anything you probably don't already know.
Thank you for the class on fly fishing. I have been collecting items to start flyfishing. Just about ready just in time for Spring 😊. Now to go get some popping bugs...
I have not used a popping bug in a long time. Now I want to try them again. I would think the silicone would repel the fish. Looks like fun. Some very nice bass. I hear red wing black birds.
The reason I don't ever fly fish for bass, though I have a combo, is that I don't want to hook and lose a PB because I was handicapping myself just for the sport of it. There is one place I fish full of dinks that it could be good at. But even that place is full of standing timber.
Try the Orvis Hydros Bank Shot shooting head line for far fewer false casts and far less effort, especially when fly fishing from a kayak, when a regular WF line feels like you are casting uphill. Might be easier while your shoulder is on the mend.
Roland, when fly fishing from a bank, use a stripping basket. Keeps the line from getting tangled in grass and brush. Probably help in the canoe too. I use one, been fly fishing for a long time.
Great video Roland. I use the same techniques up in Lake County, Fl, but with a lighter 6 wgt and smaller popping bugs. Do you tie to a straight mono leader, tapered, or do you tie in sections of mono in incremental size. I read an article in a Field and Stream Bass Edition about 40 years ago where you wrote that you made leaders for flyfishing with 3 sizes of mono. Thanks! Bass Wishes.
Mr. Roland I went into an old store looking at fishing rod and reels and they had Popping Bugs on a large card. I ask is that the right price you have on those popping bugs and the woman looked and said yes that is the price. I got all 40 of them at .19 cents each. I paid 7.60 plus tax for 40 popping bugs spring can't get here fast enough. !!!!! GOD Bless !!!!! James and Judy Hopper Joshua 14:15.
I’ve done it. Caught a small bass. My old friends laughed. Mm Kay. Speaking of the white river In bull shoals Arkansas, thought it was trout until I caught a bass da I said do what. Little slack water below the camp ground standing on the bank during slack water tide. Using a ultra light rod n reel. My fly 🪰 days I’m out of practice
Not really because the poppin' bugs don't weigh enough, with a fly rod the line itself is what loads the rod and allows you to cast. However fly casting has come a long way in the last 10 years and now there are short fat shooting heads that are super easy to cast that one can pick up and be fishing effectively in the same amount of time it takes to learn to cast a bait caster.

I wonder if he could rebroadcast that hack
@@garycox6169 I don't know, I remember it was in the 70's when I was a kid, so it might not exist anymore.

Good show Roland.
Brought back memories of bass fishing with my dad every spring with poppers. Ouwwweeee! What fun!

Wow, I'm going to try that
I wanna learn to fly fish and catch bass now. Looks like so much fun.
Cool video Mr. Martin.

Sun fish blue gill their fun to. On dry flies
A.D. Livingston's "Fly-rodding for Bass" was my favorite book when I was 14 years old.
Loved this fly rod episode! I would love to see you catch more bass on the fly!!

What would the max line size be for my 5wt(mystic rod)

Good point,im always gettin my line hung up on my foot, standing in my kayak
Yes I use a stripping basket sometimes when I Tarpon Fish
@@RolandMartinOutdoors I wish I lived in a place where I could fish for tarpon. Lucky you!
i used to tie a popper on my cane pole for bass when i was a kid.

Thanks for the fly fishing tutorial. I’d love to learn how to tie some flys. Happy New Year, Roland.

Great video
Your cameraman needs to be off your left side and including the popper in the water cuz top water is the funnest when you see that strike.😀
Fly fishing is the funniest way to catch a bass. Olé Rolland.

Mr Martin, are you still planning to get back in the game and fish the Elite’s and travel with Scott?
Did you hear about the 20lb bass that someone caught on your helicopter lure some years back? people make fun of it but it works good!
That was Ray Hill of Phoenix, AZ on lake Baccarac in Mexico and it weighed over 19 pounds!
Any chance of using a baitcaster with poppin bugs for tournaments!??#RippinLipsInc

I’ve never gotten the chance to fly fish. It looks really fun though!
How's the shoulder been feeling, Roland ? seems it's back in top shape.
What President of United States, specifically you went fishing with?
George Bush sr.
Think he took a hook out his hand too!!

I met Dick Cheney in 1999 on a hunting trip on Texas.
