I'm an old head like you and got completely hooked on KGLW a couple of years ago. These dudes are on another level musically! They will keep blowing your mind the more you listen to them. I caught one show and it exceeded expectations and some.
@@DadJams And an acoustic band, and a microtonal band, and a spoken word band, and a garage rock band, and an electronica band, and a folk rock band, and a country band, and the list goes on and on and on…. You’re gonna love them
Seeing them live for the first time in November. Crazy excited. They just finished up the first leg of their 2024 North American tour in September. They’ve been insanely generous to fans this tour, live-streaming all shows for free and releasing them all as bootlegs. All the shows are up on their bandcamp, and have been trickling in on Spotify and Apple Music through their bootleg gizz profile. So much fun to be able to experience a tour from home.
Nope, they are the phish of every genre. They only have a few metal albums. If you want to hear the polar opposite of this then watch the video for Catching Smoke, one of their all synth albums. They also have some microtonal albums and some other stuff. Their newest album sounds like the stones and The Band. Real dad rock. I’ve seen them 3 times at forest hills stadium, nyc. Fanfrickintastic. First one was hands down one of the best shows I’ve seen in my life. Their goal is to not repeat songs at a venue and so far I haven’t heard them play my favorite song, Crumbling Castle. You’ll love that. It’s amazing. Mosh pit is super fun to watch. They sometimes coordinate and get into a perfect circle. A guy planted himself in the middle and everyone ran around him for a song. It was gorgeous to watch from above. Ambrose sang Billabong Velley while crowd surfing on an inflatable alligator, a young girl came up and sang the opening words of Nuclear Fusion. Great crowd, old young and fairly weird.
Their concerts are truly the craziest thing in this world, I saw one of their “3 hour marathon sets” and they jammed so many different genres for nearly 4 hours. For their heavy songs the pit was crazier than anything Ive witnessed and Ive been to over a hundred shows
I have seen them live a few times, they are unreal. At the last show they put away the guitars and brought out a table full of synths and samplers and rocked out on that for a bunch of songs. There are a lot of their shows on youtube, totally recommend watching them
Saw them live last month, and had a blast. I discovered them shortly after their album Nonagon Infinity came out, which is such an amazing album. The first song on that album is Robot Stop, and I think that is a good one if you want to check out more.
Saw them live in my country and it was amazing! A 3h marathon show, two sets divided by a 15 min break and since then they’ve released like 6 more albums
These dudes can be that intense for a 3-hour marathon set. The mosh pit during Dragon IS exhausting. Saw them twice in March (also met 4/6 of the band, lucky me) and I had to leave the pit a couple of times when they played Dragon. Insane. 10/10. Also, the didgeridoo bit is actually Stu throat singing.
Watch their 2023 PALP performance if you want one of their strongest live performances, with a pretty diverse setlist. However, since The Silver Cord came out, they've started incorporating roughly 30-min synth-heavy parts into their sets.
Their concerts are absolutely epic. They’ll play for as long as they can, and don’t tease the audience with an encore. They’ll play as long as the venue allows. This is some of their heavier stuff, but they’re genre-bending wizards. I’d check out some other stuff if this is too heavy for you
You have only scratched the surface. They cover nearly every genre you could imagine. Definitely not a purely metal band. Saw they live once. Two drummers. 0.2 seconds into the set the mosh pit was a bucket of worms. 3 hour set straight through! Epic.
Saw them in Chicago the last few years, was in the pits for most of the heavy stuff they do. They are streaming all their live shows now. Everything is on TH-cam . Check them out
Hey DJ! I just came across this and soon I’ll be checking out your Iron Lung reaction because I’m certain your response will be worth the price of admission. KGatLW is such a fun band to discover and take a deep dive into. As others have said, their live shows are very life-affirming…full of energy and top tier musicianship. I started listening to them during the pandemic. I had just turned 50 and was feeling isolated so I turned to music which has always been there for me. I had heard of them but had only heard one song of theirs before, Crumbling Castle, and it didn’t land at first. They clicked for me when I listened to 2 of the 5 albums they released in 2019, Fishing for Fishies and Infest the Rats’ Nest. I was shocked, jaw on the floor shocked, that these 2 albums were from the same band. As a fan of bands like Phish, Tool, King Crimson and Frank Zappa, the experimentation and fearlessness of this band really hits the spot.
This album (PetroDragonic Apocalypse) is actually the first part of a sort of yin and yang thing that they did. The album that they released after this one (The Silver Cord) was a sort of "part two" and it is kinda the polar opposite of this one. It's all synth, sort of psychedelic and the first time I listened to that album, I just about ascended to a higher plane. And they also have extended versions of all of the songs on that album which farther solidify the jam band accusations, lol. The extended mixes also have lyrics taken from the corresponding song on this album. They both have 7 songs. And in the last half of the last song on this album, called Flamethrower, it switches from guitars to synths and it sounds absolutely wild. Also, just to pile onto the other comments, listen to Iron Lung live on KEXP next 😉
FYI king gizzard have 26 albums over the past 13 years. This frankly insane pace allows them to change up genre from album to album. You really started at the deep end with this one. Controversial opinion but I think this is one of the weaker songs on the album (I find it quiet repetitive). If you're looking for a more jammy experience you should check out the music video for Iron Lung
The river by king gizzard is probably their earliest signs of being a jam band. Really they are am everything band genres wise. So you never know whatcha going to get if you true hit random on each song
While you were recording this reaction, these guys were recording 7 albums at the same time. They're insane, it's impossible to put them under a single category, your brain could melt. And despite appearances, they will play exactly what they recorded in the studio when they play live, not a jam band. I saw them and they played for 3 hours, it's such an experience.
They do respect the general forms of the songs and play intros/verses/choruses etc. exactly like the studio recordings, but they are well-known for jamming on instrumental sections, throwing in melodies from other songs and transitioning between them in different ways. They never play the same setlist twice. So saying they play exactly like the recordings is a little inaccurate as I think their ability to improvise on the fly and the unspoken chemistry between the members is a huge reason why they're so interesting to see live, over and over again :)
@@jjhenn45 You are right, I meant that they will respect what's been recorded and then they might or not add something new to each song live but I dunno, perhaps it's because I never liked that they're considered just a jam band instead of an incredibly talented group of people that can make musical alchemy on studio and extend it on stage. They might be a "jam band" I just think it's an under appreciative statement. They're way more than that.
@@laeonflux Yeah I get where you're coming from. The "jam band" label seems to have been slapped onto them in the last couple years and it does undermine how meticulously constructed a lot of their music is. Gotta love a good jam though!
The funny thing is they'll mix their heavy metal stuff in between their jammy psychedelic songs live. Their finale in Asheville this year went from "Float Along Fill Your Lungs" one of their most trippy songs, to THIS near seamlessly. It was an amazing finisher, and it's up for free on "bootleg gizzard" on youtube. I was there live, forst concert ever and I want to go again when they come back to the states. Gives a good feel for what ine of their live shows looks/sounds like.
Also I hope all the Gizz fans come here and subscribe because you were a blast to watch. I’m curious what you’ll say when you see their actually jam material (iron lung and such) I’m subbing and liking of course :D
Stu is throat-singing, no didge (didgeridoo) Their range is extraordinary! Try their latest (dad rock) album or as suggested, their KEXP sessions which are all fabulous.
Ive been a fan for a while now. They are just the best. From acid jazz to dream pop, tanning and insanely good step in thrash metal while maintaining the high title of psychedelic rock genius. They got the kind of fan that will go see 5-10 shows and more in the same tour. React to catching smoke soon. It’s probably the biggest clash I could thing of. And the jam band not a jam band debacle is one since the beginning 😂😂
the whole Petro album is like one big song, same with The Silver Chord. They do that a lot, albums like "I'm In Your Mind Fuzz", "Quarters!", "Nonagon Infinity", "Murder of the Universe", "Sketches of Brunswick East" are all albums that are like one big song or a few big songs. Also all the albums mentioned are bangers
Welcome to the Gizzverse brother. Like others have commented, only 2 of their 26 albums are metal, and they both kick ass. They definitely jam a lot live and never play the same setlist, but aren't a proper jam band. Their shows are some of the best in the world and you never know what to expect. Check out Iron Lung live on KEXP for a different size of what they can do.
I welcome you on your KGLW journey! Each album is extremely diverse from one another so there's so much to explore. They're a phenomenal live band, I seriously recommend you check out their KEXP performances

And yes, definitely review Iron Lung the KEXP studio session. Dragon is a bit of a weird one to get introduced to KGLW with, unless you're a metal head.
Fun fact, this song is off their SECOND metal album about climate change. This one tells the story of a world where humanity worships the “motor spirit”, resulting in pollution so severe it starts forming supercell storms that destroy cities. Then a coven of witches get together to try to conjure something to stop the storms, but a black cat disrupts the ritual and they accidentally summon a Gila monster who eats all the witches and grows into the dragon you see in this video, where it burns the entire world. Their first one, Infest The Rats’ Nest, is more thrash metal ala old Metallica. That one tells the story of the world going through similar massive climate change, but this time all the rich people flee to colonize mars, leaving the poor behind on earth. Agricultural collapse and superbugs start to wreak havoc, leading to them taking a spaceship with half the remaining population and attempting to colonize Venus. That ship crashes into the sun. They try again and successfully make it to Venus, but it’s so horrible that they all go crazy and off themselves via self-immolation. Then they end up in hell where satan himself sends them back to the realm of the living to get revenge on the rich population that left them to die on earth. Metal as fuck. Glad to find your channel. Welcome to the gizzverse
I don't know if someone already said it, but 2 Parts of the Song that are sung by Joe are in LATIN; this is the most metal shit you will ever experience!
@@DadJams Their recent tour really highlighted his ability to growl through the Latin incantations. I recommend searching YT for “King Gizzard Dragon Vancouver” for the best focus on the Latin. It’s wild 🤣
oOOH YEEAAhH!! Going to see them next month! Seen them once in Austin years ago. Own every album. (except the live ones) Would check out some of their softer stuff just to see what kind of range these dudes have. Check out "Candles" =)
Yes, they are good live. ive been going to shows on more or less a monthly basis for the better part of my 37 years and they are by far the best live band ive ever seen, without question. They played 125 different songs in 6 weeks on their first leg of the US tour and thats only half their catalog. I think there's "only" 45-50 songs of that which have never been played live, but they are still somewhat regularly doing first plays of material thats years old, which is a lifetime in gizz time. All that to say literally anything can happen at a gizz show. You will never see the same show twice no matter how often you go (including watching every show live on YT from your living room). And they will intentionally not play a single song they played last time they were in your town. Only in the few rare places that get them doing regularly doing multi night stints like red rocks, you might get a couple repeats in 12-15 hours of set time across 6 shows on 2 consecutive tours. Unless you are an extreme tour chaser, most times you do get to see a song multiple times, they will be distinctly unique performances even on the same tour. New material does take a bit of time for them to get to a major degree of unpredictability vs their matured material, but they'll still never be identical performances even when they're tightly rehearsed brand new releases. "Dang dude, you must be a long time fan" Barely known them a year since i was told "just buy the ticket you wont regret it" and I only really started listening/watching them when the latest album came out August and i knew the show was coming up in Sept. Then the streams started and they blew me away. Now its november and ive got 4 lives in the bag and 2 more next year. Help.
@DadJams you really do! Bring the family. Symphony tour gonna be something truly special. We're hitting NYC for back to backs. Looking forward to working thru your growing collection of reacts.
Uh oh. I’m sure you’ve heard enough from the comments but this is only a fraction of their sound. This is a huge rabbit hole and the fans will only stop when you’ve listened to all 26 albums (all in the span of 13 years)
This is their best song. So heavy and just bad ass. They have so much material. 26 albums, each changing genres. If you want some Dad rock vibes their new album "Flight B741" is blues rock with just the catchiest tunes. Id recommend "Antartica", "Daily Blues" or "Field of Vision". They have an incredible thrash metal album called "Infest the Rats Nest" and the track "Mars for the Rich" is just pure incredible MC5/Stooges/Metallica rock n roll. You cant go wrong with these guys. I hope you give them another chance, they have quite a plethora of incredible tunes and incredible live performances. Their "KEXP" sessions on youtube are them at their best. The tracks "Iron Lung" and "Magma" show off their jamming skills.

so sick.....can't wait to do more of their metal songs!
“Is this English?” Yes, until Joey throat sings the Latin incantations 😂
insane he can do that!
Check out "Candles" =)
ok ok....added to the list. Thanks for watching!
Help.
I have to see them live....definitely on the list for next summer!
@DadJams you really do! Bring the family. Symphony tour gonna be something truly special. We're hitting NYC for back to backs. Looking forward to working thru your growing collection of reacts.
"Yes, it's fucking insane"
agreed!
Uh oh. I’m sure you’ve heard enough from the comments but this is only a fraction of their sound. This is a huge rabbit hole and the fans will only stop when you’ve listened to all 26 albums (all in the span of 13 years)
hahahaha, I've gone down a rabbit hole before with an artist (NF) and I might have to do that with these guys....Thanks for watching!
Welcome to a wild ride…. Kglw best band out rn
I'm definitely starting to realize this.....I need to do another reaction...Thanks for watching!
6:10 they throat sing
I didn't even know that was a thing!
please do iron lung on the kexp set!! its so good and closer to that phish / grateful dead sound you were thinking of
DONE!!! Definitely doing it soon. Thanks for watching!
Suggestion? Another one from King Gizz. There’s a 92% chance it’s going to be something completely and utterly different.
haha, that's what I'm learning about these guys....they cover every sound it seems...thanks for watching!
Second Coming - Confessional
ok ok....added to the list!
Some of the lyrics were not English! Latin
I knew it! Thanks!
Empire - Frankie & the Witch Fingers
ok ok.....added to the list, thanks!
Check out Hell's Itch... it has a Phish sound. One of my favorites by KG.
oooooh Ok Ok, added to the list......thanks for watching!
@DadJams the instrumental starting at 6:40 on Hell's Itch is mind blowing 🤯
I am definitely going to do another reaction to one of their songs.....give me one, there are too many to choose from! Thanks for watching!
The weirdo swarm comes for us all ...
haha, I'm with them now!
Just found the channel so not sure, but if you like King Gizzard, check out Ningen Isu or Slift
ok ok.....added to the list, thanks for watching!
It's not in English, it's in Aussie.
right right, makes sense!
Yeah i dunno man
me neither!
Fontains dc romance
ok ok.....added to the list. Thanks for watching!
the best label or genre for Gizz is Gizz. not a jam band.
Straight gizz!
