I’m 55 and was fortunate to have been at Austin psych fest in 2014 and had never heard of them. Well I’ve seen them twelve times and have four more coming up next month… I’ve never enjoyed a band so talented and blow my mind every time… go down that rabbit hole, you’ll be glad you did… welcome to the weirdo swarm
They're Australian and did start meeting each other in college. They've done everything themselves from the beginning including starting their own label to put out their music. The album Nonagon Infinity is probably their most celebrated album. The songs blend into each other, have repeated motifs, and the last song circles back and connects with the first again. It's an intense first listen but like all their albums, gets better and better with each listen. They also have some amazing and funny music videos. The Gamma Knife and People Vultures music videos from that album are worth checking out for sure. They're also connected visually and musically. They repeat a lot of lyrics and motifs across different albums in different contexts as well, so the rabbit hole goes as deep as you want to take it. I will add, that they're some of the best live performers in the world and every show is completely different. Anything live is worth watching.
I had Spotify on a random playlist whilst driving, most tunes being appreciated but mostly unnoticed until Crumbling Castle came on. I’d never heard of KGLW before but that track made me take notice and I had to start it from the beginning again…it was a great introduction to them and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed what they’ve produced before and since
your comment on the way they transition is completely accurate. during live shows they sometimes switch out the bridge of a song for a completely different one and still play teases of other tracks as well
YESSSS DO IT!!! You’ve unlocked your new favorite band and I’m so happy for you. The community is next level and the band breaks the scale in every aspect. I would recommend “The Dripping Tap” next, or the ultimate album review of Omnium Gatherum for a taste of every flavor of Gizz. Keep rocking!!
King Gizzard is so awesome. They have both quality and quantity. When I first found them a few years ago, it was the most fun I've ever had discovering a band. Quickly became my favorite band of all time. Seen them 7 times at Red Rocks within the past 2 years. Everything is they do is interesting, and you can tell they have a lot of fun making music together.
Gizz are so worth a deep dive. Crazy talented and so versatile. If you liked the transitions in this song, just wait until you hear their transitions between songs on their albums!
This is a great rabbit hole to fall down. So you’ve done Dragon which was metal You’ve done a live Iron Lung which is jammy psychedelic rock To continue seeing their versatility of sounds I’d suggest the music video for Catching Smoke next. After that I’d do another Live performance. Anything from Red Rocks is great, most popular probably being The River, but also listening to something Microtonal would be cool. There are no bad routes voyaging through the Gizzverse Good luck and enjoy!
@@DadJams many fans will tell you Live is where it’s at and I would agree, but I do think the Catching Smoke music video is unique and great and it’s a song they’ve never played Live, so that’s better to experience with the Music Video. Plus it gives you a taste of another completely different sound they’ve explored. However, after that and hearing another completely different sound, the rabbit hole should be some of their Live stuff. The KEXP and Red Rocks performances are gold mines moving forward. The River at RR22, Magma at RR23 day show, some microtonal material from either KEXP or Red Rocks or you could do some microtonal music videos if you want to go back and forth between Live and videos.
"This is an adventure right now" was my exact thought the first time I heard this song. I had been listening to the album "fishing for fishies" and a few other songs for a few years when I was driving through the ozark mountains and this song came on right when it was new. I then proceeded to fall into the rabbit hole and never look back. Definitely checkout more. They quickly became my favorite band of all time over the last few years.
Awesome reaction, you definitely need to go down the rabbit hole with these guys! So much material and incredible songs, and the tracks you may not like, could be someone elses favorite. You definitely need to hear Crumbling Castle. A irrefutable Top 5 Gizzard track. Might as well start with the studio version, the live on KEXP is great too, its just shortened a bit. A great, fun live video is Robot Stop/Hot Water at Bonnaroo '22 great energy and gets you moving!
Their newest album just dropped in August. "Le Risque" to me is the standout: it's a straight-up bluesy boogie throwback dad rock jam, comes in under 4 minutes, and features four different singers.
DUDE - you seem to "get" them so well! The middle "going crazy" instrumental section comes just after the lyrics, "Gimme the mushrooms, Time to leave." It was precisely a trip; a journey. The reason they have so many albums is IMO because they don't have the same roadblocks to creation that other bands do. They don't deal with contract issues with a label or promoter or ... because they are their own. They don't deal with producers, they do that too. They don't deal with production issues; they have their own vinyl press and make their own merch too. They have incredible word of mouth because they don't fight with bootlegging fans (or reaction channels) they encourage them - in fact, they are livestreaming all their concerts this tour *free* and released an impressive Prog album called Polygondwanaland under Creative Commons licensing and encouraged people to start their own labels and presses using their work. If you want another Gizzy left-turn, I recommend the song, "Grim Reaper" Live from Bonnaroo 2022
Loved this reaction! As for further recommendations, I'd check out Magma at red rocks '23 to see what they sound like on a big stage, or maybe Catching Smoke to see how insanely varied their talent is.
@@DadJams If Not Now, Then When? and Pleura are both songs of theirs off of the album L.W.. I would say a good sample of their microtonal stuff would be the first four songs off of their Live in Chicago '23 album. You'll find it on TH-cam somewhere or under their second Spotify page called bootleg gizzard, where they put their live albums. If I had to pick one microtonal song it'd be O.N.E.. The studio version is great and so are the Red Rocks 22' and Chicago 23' versions.

Sorry to say but your fun fact is not correct. I believe cavs studied music but Stu, Joey and Eric and possibly Lucas went to RMIT and did a course called music industry. This couse covers all dacets of the music industry but is very different to studying music. Stu and Joey have said they know very little about music theory.
@DadJams way cool, l have been enjoying your enthusiasm so far, but you may have to change your handle to @GranddadJams, there's a veritable shitton to work through.
Yeah I think a few of these guys went to college together. They’re also from Melbourne, Australia. They all have other bands and music projects that they work on outside of KGLW. (The Murlocs, Heavy Moss, Bullant) Be prepared. 26 albums that sound extremely different from one another and they’re working on the 27th
@@DadJams 2nd half of their 2024 North American Tour kicks back up Nov 1. They're doing California and moving East to end in Florida. They Did the NE, Midwest, and PNW earlier in the summer. I saw them for a 3hr marathon in Chicago and it was next level. They are live streaming all the shows for free.
If you like straight up classic rock I’d recommend anything off their latest album, Flight b741. Standouts would be Raw Feel, Le Risqué, and Daily Blues, but the whole thing is spectacular. If you’re looking for something similar to this, go find a live version of Magma or Hypertension and thank me later
You’ve tumbled down one heck of a rabbit hole. Possibly the most creative & prolific active band today. You should absolutely check out more of these guys, you won’t be disappointed. You should react to the music video to Catching Smoke next, yet another that will catch you off guard in the best kind of way ✌️🤘
Gizz is the best band out there, so OF COURSE do it! they make fun, interesting, silly, crazy videos and have tons of professionally shot live footage of a huge chunk of their discography so you're choices are almost limitless, and there will never be a bad one!
@@DadJams it's just... so much! but in all seriousness, it's a crazy ride and if you dig it you'll be rewarded with an insane amount of content (as well as a friendly, supportive fan base). hopefully you keep on enjoying them, they do a lot and everything isn't for everyone, but if you get to that point of just loving and appreciating them in all that they do (and it's a lot, even beyond the music) it just all becomes great fun seeing these crazy Aussies do it all with gusto and charm!
If you're gonna go down the rabbit hole (which you definitely should), I think Crumbling Castle is a pretty natural next listen. It's one of their best songs in my opinion. But if you want to jump to something even more different in their catalogue from this and Dragon, then I'd say go to either Magenta Mountain (Live at Red Rocks '22), or do something from their most recent album like Mirage City or Flight B741
I saw them live in August. Hands down the best live show I’ve been to. These guys are on another level. They perform multiple different genres with expert precision over 2 hours. It was like a dream come true.
@@DadJams They’ve been uploading full streams of their US tour to their TH-cam channel if you want to check one out. It’s not really something to react to but something for you to enjoy on the side. They uploaded the show I went to at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine recently
Saw them for the first time last year at an acoustic set at The Caverns in Tennessee... unfortunately, not IN the Cavern, as I discovered them too late to realize they were doing a residency. A few months later, I began listening in earnest, and within a month, they became my favorite band of all time. I am a dad in my 50s, have been to over 400 concerts, and have NEVER seen or heard a band with this much talent. These guys are the best rabbit hole to fall down. Enjoy! As for songs to check out, not sure if there is a video for Change or Ambergris, but those would be good ones to show you more of their range.
KGLW are not crazy. They are, according to many, the best band in the world. I also think so. It is a multitude of musical genres, experiments with theory and microtonal music. Finally, it is a fantastic journey through rock music. My suggestions for listening (and getting addicted): Astroturf, Self Imolate, Magma (KEXP), Work This Time (live in Bonnaroo), Float Along, Fill Your Lungs (live PALP Festival), Ambergris, Change (studio version), Catching Smoke, Hell (KEXP), The Wheel (KEXP), Grim Reaper...
I still think one of my favorite live moments I’ve heard is 2023 Salt Shed, where they played Gaia into Motor Spirit, into Great Chain of Being, BACK into Gaia to finish off the suite. Just mindblowing. That’s more of their heavier stuff tho!
MY MAN! You did it. Okay, so for more KEXP which Stu from the band mixes, check out: Magma, Crumbling Castle, Hell are must views. For more live that isn't KEXP, check out "Evil" River from Red Rocks 22, absolutely incredible jam. For something totally different which is what The Gizz does best, check out the Catching Smoke video. The rabbit hole is DEEP. Keep going and you might be ready for the synth table.
@@DadJams Hmmmmm. Interesting approach. I might consider not doing that as their are 26 albums and it will take a long time to get to what are considered the masterpieces. Can't go wrong with Crumbling Castle KEXP, Catching Smoke video, Gama Knife video, Plant B video, Hell KEXP, Le Riske video... I could go on for days. Live is where it is at though.
Live video recommendations: “Le Risqué” in Troutdale from this year if you want a shorter video, or two great ones: “Grim Reaper” at Remlinger Farms ‘23, or “Magma” at Red Rocks ‘23.
You're gonna have a fun time with this band! They've become my favorite by far. You should definitely give the Live in Chicago '23 version of Change a listen. It's great songs of theirs and one of my favorite live songs. Change also shows off another side of theirs, it's more jazz rock than the metal and jam stuff you've listed to so far.
You gotta listen to Crumbling Castle! It's the first song I've ever heard from them and it instantly clicked. It has a tragic yet hopeful vibe, the song changes time signatures like it's nothing, most of them are odd time signatures, and the band makes them all sound great. The whole thing sounds like a song equivalent of an epic. There's also Murder of the Universe, which I think is their best album narratively. It's divided into 3 parts that all tell their own story with themes of alteration and apocalypse. It's best enjoyed whole, or at least with those 3 parts as their own separate wholes.
Fresh off of watching both your KGATLW reactions and I desperately want you to keep going down the rabbit hole. But also, not sure how you feel about jazz/fusion but you should definitely check out Snarky Puppy and their song What About Me? from their We Like it Here album, there’s a live video of the recording in studio and it’s simply amazing. Also Polyphia, different vibe, equally insane, mostly instrumental prog rock.
So they have been livestreaming their 2024 us tour. First leg is done and second is about to start up again in nov. They are uploading the shows now one a night that is amazing looking and sounding. Every show is different. I got to see them in Richmond in aug. Was my first and will not be my last. Go down the rabbit hole!
If you wanna do see some of their electronic stuff they do, I'd recommend Gilgamesh + Set from red rocks this year or The Silver Cord at the gorge. Crazy performances saw them twuce this year! Absolute legends they are, loved the vid!
Did you say Gilgamesh?!?! Fantastic name for a song.....adding it to the list but I just started my journey into every single one of their videos so make sure to check out the new playlist!
Definitely worth. I really liked Robot Stop, Le Risque, and Lightning Lord vs Balrog music videos. I discovered them in college during 2017 right after they released Polygondwanaland and have been obsessed since because they keep releasing bangers. There are albums where when they first came out i thought they were ok but the more you listen to them the better they seemed oddly as i was able to pick up on parts of the songs i liked more and more. I also guess that Cellophane, Rattlesnake, and Invisible Face are extra music videos you could look into. I was more a “listen to the entire album with lyrics up” kind of guy.
Do one of their microtonal songs for a totally different sound, from the albums; flying microtonal banana, KG or LW! I would say either O.N.E., Pleura, Billabong Valley, Rattlesnake, Intrasport or Straws in the wind
@@DadJams frist two albums are pretty much lofi surf rock, next one is a western spaghetti tale, from there on out everything is all over the place! Me, as well as alot of other people love seeing someone experience this amazing band for the first time, so keep em comin!
If I could throw a suggestion out there, listen to Shanghai or Catching Smoke off of the album Butterfly 3000 (: very different from both that you’ve heard so far! I imagine you’ll be impressed!
Be careful man. You took a couple of hits of Gizz. Yeah you had a good time sure, but one more and you're in for the long haul. There's no going back. Its worth mentioning that you'll have 26 studio albums to look forward to, and you'll probably speed run that in a matter of weeks. Within a month you'll be trying to explain the concept of the Gizzverse to you friends and family, who will start to worry that you've gone a bit mad. Just a heads-up
That is the funniest comment I've seen in a long time. Totally accurate, though. Took me a couple of months to get totally hooked on the Gizz. No going back. You've reached the end of the cul-de-sac 🤘🏻🐊
@@DadJams I'd watch that. Don't think I've seen anyone do the videos in order yet, and it's a bit less daunting than their entire back catalogue. They've probably realised another 2 or 3 albums since I typed this. Lol

As a continued contrast from Dragon, and Iron Lung, now do… The Wheel on KEXP. This will book end their capable sounds/styles. Now if you continue down the KGLW path, you will learn they are capable of everything in between these book ends.

26 albums is insane!!!
Rattlesnake - Live at the Gorge 2024. KIng GIzzard. Tour De Force, show opener.
ok ok, added to the list!
@@DadJamsI was in the front row and lost my hat in 5 seconds. lol.
Yeah babyyyyyy 😎
HELL YEA!
They play all genres
I'm starting to realize this!!!
Amby kills the Iron Lung vocals so hard
crushed it!
Yup this is them live! Best concert experience you could ever imagine.
Need to see them live
@@DadJams 2nd half of their 2024 North American Tour kicks back up Nov 1. They're doing California and moving East to end in Florida. They Did the NE, Midwest, and PNW earlier in the summer. I saw them for a 3hr marathon in Chicago and it was next level. They are live streaming all the shows for free.
Yes! Another reactor has found the crazy band KGLW! You'll have SO much fun with these guys, they do like a different genre almost every album.
Already having a great time with them, they are incredible!....thanks for watching!
If you like straight up classic rock I’d recommend anything off their latest album, Flight b741. Standouts would be Raw Feel, Le Risqué, and Daily Blues, but the whole thing is spectacular.
If you’re looking for something similar to this, go find a live version of Magma or Hypertension and thank me later
oooh ok ok....added to the list!
"KEXP Crumbling Castle" next
ok ok!!! Thanks for watching!
The (evil) River from Red Rocks '22 is a must add to the list. Maybe one of the most incredible live performances of any song of all time.
ok ok, added to the list.....thank you!
You’ve tumbled down one heck of a rabbit hole. Possibly the most creative & prolific active band today. You should absolutely check out more of these guys, you won’t be disappointed. You should react to the music video to Catching Smoke next, yet another that will catch you off guard in the best kind of way ✌️🤘
“Possibly” lol it’s not even close
Catching Smoke is on the list.....thank you for watching!
Gizz is the best band out there, so OF COURSE do it!
they make fun, interesting, silly, crazy videos and have tons of professionally shot live footage of a huge chunk of their discography so you're choices are almost limitless, and there will never be a bad one!
I think I'm going to do all of them....why not, right?
But if you want to jump to something even more different in their catalogue from this and Dragon, then I'd say go to either Magenta Mountain (Live at Red Rocks '22), or do something from their most recent album like Mirage City or Flight B741
ok ok.....added to the list, thanks for watching!
ROBOT STOP music video would be a good one for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
ok ok....added to the list, thanks for watching!
if you really want to get confused try Catching Smoke :)
That's what's next!
Honestly, check out their Theia/The silver cord/ Set music video :-) completely different stuff but super cool
ok ok, added to the list....thanks for watching!
for what it's worth, if you go down this rabbit hole all the way i will be there for every single song.
I HAVE to do it....definitely seems worth it.
The world of KGATLW is a varied and crazy ride that any classic psychedelic rock fan should experience.
I saw them live in August. Hands down the best live show I’ve been to. These guys are on another level. They perform multiple different genres with expert precision over 2 hours. It was like a dream come true.
I NEED to see them live!
@@DadJams They’ve been uploading full streams of their US tour to their TH-cam channel if you want to check one out. It’s not really something to react to but something for you to enjoy on the side. They uploaded the show I went to at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine recently
@@youtime18 definitely watching it, thanks!
Gotta check out Magma next!
ok ok!
@@DadJams YES! magma live on kexp is crazy as fuck too
@@DadJamsmagma 2023 red rocks. Mind blowing.

Warning! This is a very deep rabbit hole! 😂
that's what I'm learning....however, I'm here for it!
The (Evil) River!!! Live at Red Rocks ‘22
DONE!
@@DadJams the studio version is really good but they took it to a whole different level at red rocks
If you want another sonic whiplash like the one you got going from Dragon to Iron Lung, check out Grim Reaper live at Remlinger Farms 2023.
ok ok.....added to the list! Thanks for watching!
Greatest band of all time.
oh wow, big claim.....but you may be right...time will tell.
Catching smoke is my suggestion. Once again completely different. Le Risqué is also good. But I’m sure everyone here has different suggestions
ok ok.....added to the list, thank you!
listen Magma live Red Rocks 2023
oooh on it....thanks for watching!
its called Dwagon. if you know you know
hahahahahah ok ok!
They are sooo talented....I'll definitely add those to the list, thanks for watching!
Laughed out loud watching your eyes open wide when Ambrose started his vocal part 😂
hahahahah I couldn't help it....crazy talented!
You're having the privilege of watch future legends in real time.
I'm here for it....thanks for watching!
If you keep up with the king gizz content, ill be a well hydrated person. thanks man. 🤘
Oh it's happening....stay thirsty my friend.
I definitely agree with you from what I’ve seen thus far! More to come, stay tuned!
The answer is yes
I still think one of my favorite live moments I’ve heard is 2023 Salt Shed, where they played Gaia into Motor Spirit, into Great Chain of Being, BACK into Gaia to finish off the suite. Just mindblowing.
That’s more of their heavier stuff tho!
love heavy stuff....looking this up now, thanks for watching!
MY MAN!
I think I'm going to start from the beginning....do every single video.....Why not right?!?!
Live video recommendations:
“Le Risqué” in Troutdale from this year if you want a shorter video, or two great ones: “Grim Reaper” at Remlinger Farms ‘23, or “Magma” at Red Rocks ‘23.
ok ok, added to the list, thanks!
Nanogon Infinity and Murder of the Universe are MUST listen to albums, skipping those out of their discography is literally a crime.
I promise I won't skip them....definitely don't want to be arrested!
I'm loving this journey....stay tuned, so much more to come! Thanks for watching!
Its called Gizzverse for a reason.
Its a mesh of amazing experiences.
You will never, ever listen to anything like this
That's what I'm realizing!
THE (EVIL) RIVER LETS GOOO
LFG!
@@DadJams 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I mean YES, but do you need to hear The River first before you hear The (Evil) River?
You gotta listen to Crumbling Castle! It's the first song I've ever heard from them and it instantly clicked. It has a tragic yet hopeful vibe, the song changes time signatures like it's nothing, most of them are odd time signatures, and the band makes them all sound great. The whole thing sounds like a song equivalent of an epic.
There's also Murder of the Universe, which I think is their best album narratively. It's divided into 3 parts that all tell their own story with themes of alteration and apocalypse. It's best enjoyed whole, or at least with those 3 parts as their own separate wholes.
Ok ok….added to the list. Thanks for watching!
Oh I'm doing it....about to record some reactions right now! Stay tuned.
Even more contrast? "Sense" from the album Paper Maché Dream Balloon! All acoustic album about a serial killer on a brutal spree... lol
it's about a serial killer? Crazy, need to do it....thanks for watching!
3:39 correct, 3 or 4 of the 6 did. There’s even you tube vids of their end of year assessment posted by their lecture.
stop it! I have to find those videos!
@@DadJams they’re pretty interesting
So they have been livestreaming their 2024 us tour. First leg is done and second is about to start up again in nov. They are uploading the shows now one a night that is amazing looking and sounding. Every show is different. I got to see them in Richmond in aug. Was my first and will not be my last. Go down the rabbit hole!
I'm definitely going down the rabbit hold and definitely getting tix to see them live.....stay tuned for more and thanks for watching!
@@DadJams enjoy!
Not only all that, but they have an almost insane cult-like fan base. They are, frankly, the new Grateful Dead.
That's what it seems like, very cool!
You should check out Gamma Knife followed by People Vultures. Classic Gizz!
DONE, added to the list....thanks for watching!
If you want more jam like from King Gizz this whole album they did is jam I very much recommend: Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, and Lava
ok ok....added to the list, thanks!
Well now you gotta do Magma (either the one they did right after this on KEXP or the Chicago Salt Shack 2023 one).
if I must....then I MUST!!! Thanks for watching!
I think I'm going to start from the beginning and do every video....thoughts?
Do one of their microtonal songs for a totally different sound, from the albums; flying microtonal banana, KG or LW! I would say either O.N.E., Pleura, Billabong Valley, Rattlesnake, Intrasport or Straws in the wind
Deal! Might have to start from the beginning and do everything! Thanks for watching!
DEAL! thanks for watching!
You've reached the end of the cul-de-sac 🤘🏻🐊
my hairline looks like a cul-de-sac so I feel at home with these guys....might have to start from the beginning and do every single video....thoughts?
@@DadJams I'd watch that. Don't think I've seen anyone do the videos in order yet, and it's a bit less daunting than their entire back catalogue. They've probably realised another 2 or 3 albums since I typed this. Lol
“Magenta Mountain into Grim Reaper Live at The Caverns 2023.
The Caverns is a subterranean cave amphitheater in TN. Basically this is a synth pop song, then synth jam that segues into a satanic flute rap song, then synth rap jam.
th-cam.com/video/-wGbG2vR8wc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IPSdElWml0cXYzFI
did you say "satanic flute rap song"?!?!?! what in the sam hell is that? Now I guess I have to react to it.....thanks and stay tuned!
As a continued contrast from Dragon, and Iron Lung, now do… The Wheel on KEXP.
This will book end their capable sounds/styles.
Now if you continue down the KGLW path, you will learn they are capable of everything in between these book ends.
oooh, added to the list...Thanks for watching!
I actually thought thr music video for iron lung accompanied the song really well but sure.
agreed, thanks for watching!
