Gotta admit, when I saw the title I thought it was "Moonshine, why carry?" And this would show me how to make a still on the trail out of moss and acorns or something.
The best container I have found to transport alcohol is an old Elmer's School Glue bottle. Weighs almost nothing and the twist nozzle makes pouring easy.
Stainless steel flasks are about ten dollars. They are built to take alcohol without leakage or damage to the sealing element, usually silicone rubber. A little silicone grease on the threads helps make it easy to open when needed.
I worked for a natural gas co for 22 years. We used a couple tanker loads of methanol per year to keep our lines from freezing and breaking frozen lines loose. Almost all the store bought shine has been cut with water, especially if it has been double or triple distilled. Glad i saw the wax. I ran across some yesterday and was trying to remember what it was. Thought it was lye soap. Bought it from you a year or two ago.
Thanks for point out to the uninitiated that alcohol stoves burn almost invisibly. A little trick to use to make using alcohol a touch "safer" to use is to mix/dissolve some salt into the alcohol. Which salt you use will cause the flame to burn a color, common table salt generally resulting in a yellowish flame. Usually yellow means cool but in this case it's the minerals in the salt burning at a specific temp resulting in a specific wavelength of color, while the alcohol is still burning hot.
Dave I watched many.you're the best .I worked with a retired forest ranger for a few years.he taught that one should always work top down when splitting ,when cutting off branches, even de -barking,he wouldn't leave his axe sticking in the chopping block either he would lay it.I watch all these guys sticking their axes, hatchets, even mauls in the chopping block and laugh,at that practice aprofessional just doesn't do show-off moves like that however subtle.
You can use sassafras root bark to get a tincture that works great on rashes, infections, and swelling of the skin. It also helps to soothe an upset stomach and detoxifies the blood/liver.
Alcohol is also a good barter item. Folks are willing to pay a hefty price for their vices/comfort items. I recommend carrying nips, because it gives you a chance to negotiate. Instead of trading away a full flask size container you have the option to increase your end of the barter in 50ml increments. It also gives you a chance to carry variety. You can carry several types of grain alcohol, all of which will work in the above uses, but it gives you one more advantage in a trade situation.
Dave, I did some of my own experiments with both ethanol as well as rubbing alcohol for the purposes of use with stoves as fuels. But what I've found with my Esbit stove, is that Clorox hand sanitizer (71% ethanol) would NOT bring water to boil. Even with the higher heat output of 90% rubbing alcohol, it plumed up in about 45 seconds, and will boil 32 oz of water in Pathfinder bottle in 24 minutes. When I added rubbing alcohol to the hand sanitizer (1:1), boil in 32 minutes, with less soot.
I threw together a kit I keep in my truck without much of an idea of what I was doing. I filled a plastic juice bottle with some vodka for disinfectant then sealed that in a ziplock for extra protection from leaks. I'm glad to see I had a half decent idea in that. I took a lot of helpful information away from this for future ideas. Thank you.
Great Vid dave... someone may have said... but try that stove about 2\3's full and it should get a good bloom happening out of those top jets. If u keep the stove in your pocket (more so for winter) it will have an easier time getting to full bloom as well.
My Granddaddy was a Moonshiner. He said it (Cañita) healed a lot of ailments and was 160 Proof. Man this video brings back memories. And, I have a bunch of black walnut trees right in my yard. Good to know. Southeastern Ohio has been a blessing for my knowledge. I can walk right outside my door and learn a lot more than when I resided in New Yorkistan.
Dave, Loved this video. I would suggest that the glass bottle is stronger than that plastic bottle. The glass bottle also has uses when empty a a material for making tools and points. If the bottle was kept in a bag made of oil cloth, then if the bottle did break then the glass would be contained. Testing the bottles for strength might be a cool video.
Thanks Dave, excellent info.I had not heard of this tincture before,so good to know.I use tinctures for many things so will put this in my file.God bless you & yours Dave, thanks for your work.
Thank you for another important use, or might I say multi uses for grain alcohol Dave. I really learn lots of different things by watching your video's brother, Terry.
Don't forget that in a long term situation grain alcohol would be one of the most valuable trade commodities a person could have with them, a pint of booze could get you just about whatever you needed.
add new kettle with large insert for herbal tinctures just on your latest video this is a treasure! I am a naturopath\herbalist I get so frustrated that the basics of health care is not taught in school! Tekos Russian school where kids 7-17 teach each other and kids have built their own school grow own vegies and cook plaster paint and learn self defense! and a 16 year old boy at the school said he can build his own home now and grow a farm etc. is empowering kids not making them intellectual nerds! Kids will feel useful and be ready for life as it definitely needs to change and we need to live self sufficient in communities where we can give back to each other not just take! tks great videos!
Hey Dave. I completely forgot, but I wanted to wish you a happy Independence Day from England. Hope you and the family are doing well, keep up the good work.
Since I watched your herbalism videos I've been very interested in medicinal alchemy. This is a pretty cool addition to what I've been learning. Thanks.
One may use a stick to guide liquids from one bottle to another. Surface tension of the liquid causes the pour to follow the stick. Still have to go slow, pour too much at once and it will go straight off the stick.
Black walnut is a rare tree here, any other tree or plant that might worK. . Every time i see your video's i learn something new. Thanks Dave we appreciate all of your Video's
I burn 120 proof everclear in my alcohol stove, works great. I used an old nasal spray bottle that holds about 4 fluid ounces with a squirt nozzle, easy to add fuel to the stove when needed.
Two thoughts, some camp grounds/parks do not allow alcohol so be aware. Also, there is a company called Pocket Shots that makes small plastic packets of drinking alcohol that are perfect for this sort of thing.
Great Video Dave.... Here in the Wilkes County NC Corn Likker is King and everybody makes some kind of tinctures... We make cough syrup w/ shine or 100p vodka and black strap molasses and ground up peppermint candy's..... More video's on Tinctures and herds and such please.... Country folk can survive .... Greetings from NC tim
If you can find someone who has a cannibus plant, you take some of the leaves and place them in alcohol soaking, over time the thc leaches out of the leaves into the alcohol over time. This makes a very strong analgesic. This can be rubbed into sore muscles, joints (no pun intended), and the temples of the forehead for migrains.
They sell really cheap metal flasks @ Walmart. I prefer the metal over the plastic. Could also use it to signal if necessary.. I carry 1 with oil and sometimes 1 with alcohol.
Thanks Dave...people thought I was crazy for carrying shine on hunts and not consuming it. I don't like drunks and you video emphasises what I've been saying for years. Shine has MORE purpose than just recreational consumption.
Dave, I use one of the old Swedish army issue SVEA stoves like you used and it was too full of alcohol. If you overfill it the jets don't bloom and you just slow burn the vapor from the middle
any liquor store or major grocery store that sells hard liquor will have either everclear or an off brand. just ask for grain alcohol or the strongest clear liquor they have, its usually what your looking for.
Another great video! I haven't heard about everclear since I was given some more than forty years ago, Monkees concert in Jacksonville, Florida. It was medicinal in something called "Purple Jesus". I remember drinking grape juice. It was so strong "Jesus" was my only comment!
Yep, that is the stuff, that and other brands of 190. The problems are cost (in large part due to taxes) and availability (due to the legalities of what neutral grain spirits may be sold in any given locality). 190 isn't necessary for tinctures. But for fuel for use in a stove, the higher the proof the better. I have not been able to bring 32 oz to a boil with 71% ethanol (142 proof) alone. When I add 1:1 mix with rubbing alcohol (90%), 32 minutes to boil. Rubbing alcohol alone 24 minutes.
You might want to mention for people to label it as everclear. It would could be a bad situation if somebody grabbed it and took a big swig from it. Great video
Don't forget anesthesia! Alcohol was actively used in that capacity until the Civil War era. If you had to reset a broken bone in the field, a swig or two could make all the difference for the patient's comfort.
Take 1500 ml of 100 proof vodka add a cup and a half wild cherries and place in a dark place for a week. Strain out liquid and add 500 ml of water and a cup and a half of sugar. Shake and let sit for a few days shaking occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves. Mixture will treat what ails you.
another good reason for moonshine and other alcohols is that it's a highly sought after trade item if the going gets rough in the world, there's a reason why farmers in the appalachians used it as a base form of currency before the government got involved, it's sought after and has value to it. if a real situation arises where the governments of the world fail(it's possible, anything is possible), having a still handy might not be a bad idea.
That may have been the case then and also in movies today but it's never good idea to thin out your blood if you're hemorrhaging as you're likely to bleed out. Even in the case of a broken bone depending on how bad a break it is, you don't know if you've punctured anything inside and the absolute last thing you want in a survival situation is internal bleeding of any kind. I would personally abstain from imbibing any alcohol or blood thinners in this situation. -Tom
Great video. It's nice to know how to deal with poison ivy. Have you ever tried jet lighter before? They produce a hot steady flame even when aimed downward like you were doing with the alcohol stove, and in wind to. I had a solder-it for around 10 to 15 years before it broke. I picked up a $3 and some Ronson one at Walmart that I think will hold up better because it's all metal. Both of them are refillable. You can also clean them out if you get them wet or dirty.
I read somewhere that the bark of the black walnut tree could be used in a tea and possessed some anti-anxiety properties. Have you ever heard that Dave?
By drinking the alcohol you can disinfect you mouth an throat if you have cuts or infecitons in your mouth. You dont have to swallow, you also can keep it in your mouth for a bit, an spit it out again... A thing you cant do with regular disinfection spray...
Agreed, you can use a still for many purposes. Water, herbs, fuel and of course moonshine. I do believe it is 100% legal to own a still in all states as well. Where I am many people make moonshine and many get a license to make their own fuel. I used to work for a company that manufactured stills. :)
Dave, your videos are great. I like how you clearly, and with intelligent rhetoric, explain things in detail. I'm getting past the point of watching video after video. I'm ready to hit the hills (Colorado) and start using some of this info in order to truly 'know' and learn. Do you have any suggestions ?
My old Mexican friends would make tinctures with Tequila. One of them told me that his grandmother would use Marijuana leafs with Tequila then bury it for 30 days and that was used for her arthritis.
Yes, but the tannic acid and other compounds found in black walnut are present in much lower quantities and concentrations in English walnut. Simply use more.
A benefit of using grain alcohol for an alcohol stove if it leaks into your food it does not poison the food. Just makes you a happy backpacker. :)
Gotta admit, when I saw the title I thought it was
"Moonshine, why carry?"
And this would show me how to make a still on the trail out of moss and acorns or something.
Dave,
As far as I am concerned you are the best at what you do. love your work!
Tim
knowledge is power & you share your powerful knowledge with all of us!! Thank you, Dave!!
The best container I have found to transport alcohol is an old Elmer's School Glue bottle. Weighs almost nothing and the twist nozzle makes pouring easy.
Good thing about NZ, Moonshining is completely legal to brew for your own consumption. ( Not for distribution obviously)
So THAT'S why that flask is always in my pack! ;>)
Stainless steel flasks are about ten dollars. They are built to take alcohol without leakage or damage to the sealing element, usually silicone rubber. A little silicone grease on the threads helps make it easy to open when needed.
I don't think I've ever seen a cheap flask that didn't leak and turn green on the first use.
Always a pleasure to see what's going on here Dave. Thanks so much for spending time with us.
you can also use oatmeal make a paste out of it with water and use that for a seal. Moonshiners use it to seal up their stills.
I worked for a natural gas co for 22 years. We used a couple tanker loads of methanol per year to keep our lines from freezing and breaking frozen lines loose. Mr. Canterbury...all these years later, and I STILL LOVE all your informational videos you keep putting out! Keep on keeping on! ;) Later...

My wife and I enjoyed watching this very well done and informative video. Thanks for sharing. We learned much.
I truly appreciate the info you presented here...but have to admit, I shed a tear seeing that "shine" burn.
U can't beat these old school remedies on a different note the trangia stove is the only alcohol stove ill use, nice job Dave.
Thank you brother! you put so much thought and positive energy into your posts.
Respect, Michael

Fixin' wax seems like a no brainer in the kit. Thanks.
You can use sassafras root bark to get a tincture that works great on rashes, infections, and swelling of the skin. It also helps to soothe an upset stomach and detoxifies the blood/liver.
i would love to sit down with dave and have a couple beer and listen to his storys
Really love watching your videos from the UK. I am also a Chemist, if i can be of any help, please give me a shout.

Hey Dave, Another use for alcohol cough medicine mix some ginger and honey, or sore throats, pine needles mix in a jar for joints pain.
..
Excellent information and presentation. Thanks Dave !

Note to self : Add 1 x bottle of Strait Lightning to the cache.
That's what our legal 75% moonshine is called here in PEI.
Great video Dave!
The national champion Black Walnut is actually out here in Oregon. This is relevant and great info. Thanks.
Thank you for another important use, or might I say multi uses for grain alcohol Dave. I really learn lots of different things by watching your video's brother, Terry.

Yet another awesome video Dave. Had no idea about high grade alcohol infused with black walnut leaves would help heal from poison ivy.

Yup! I carry small batch rye whiskey (Templeton Rye, from Iowa) in my kit, intended for trading.

A similar concoction can be made from Yarrow and used as an insect repellent.
Is this the making of a new series? Good medicine here brudda. Keep up the fine work.

A few bockets of moonshine is a must for camping trips. Them wilderness nights are often pretty lonely and sad.
Devil springs vodka is 150 proof. I like it for making tinctures. Actually my favorite is ever clear grain alcohol.
In certain situations, the alcohol would also be good for trading. Great ideas!
Very cool, best video yet.
Another great video! I haven't heard about everclear since I was given some more than forty years ago, Monkees concert in Jacksonville, Florida. It was medicinal in something called "Purple Jesus". I remember drinking grape juice. It was so strong "Jesus" was my only comment!

Moonshine... just like our founding father's. Loved the video man!
Great video Dave!

Always get something out of your Video's Mr. Dave Thanks and Take Shot of Shine for me!!
Whiskey is a grain our sour mash that begins clear and is "browned" by barrels. So whiskey would equally do as well.
Love your video's Dave. Thank you Brother.
Saki is a beer like drink, often called a wine, with a relatively low alcohol content of about 15-18%

Black walnut hull is a good fungicide you can use it for athletes foot, toenail fungus, etc.
Have you made any videos on making a penny stove? I've seen them before and it would be interesting to see how they are made.
this is a very good idea! deffinately adding some one that!

great stuff..thanks Dave.
Multi-use, rubbing alcohol is isopropyl, cannot be used for a tincture for internal use.
Very good video, and information! Thanks.
awesome stuff im an eagle scout going in the air force hoping to get a sere position right now since there arent any tacp jobs love his stuff
We used Moonshine, Peppermint, Liquorice, Lemon, and Honey for Cough Syrup/Cold Medicine in my family growing up

Awesome, very useful. Thanks for sharing!

ethanol is the only alcohol that wont poison you (in small doses). Rubbing alcohol is propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol

You said it was an old bottle but had it been cleaned prior to your using it? Good ideas.
informative video as always Dave
thanks
My old Mexican friends would make tinctures with Tequila. One of them told me that his grandmother would use Marijuana leafs with Tequila then bury it for 30 days and that was used for her arthritis.
One more question, can one use English Walnut leaves to create the same tincture or will something similar be made? thanks again.
Yes, but the tannic acid and other compounds found in black walnut are present in much lower quantities and concentrations in English walnut. Simply use more.
TheKez1998 Thanks for the info
Love this one, thanks for your work!
