Great video , the old people in the mountains where I grew up said if you had a 12 gauge & a 22 pistol that was all you needed . Back in the early 20th century & depression era when my grandparents were young.
You know, I know you're out there trying to make a living, support your family, etc. What I appreciate more than you know is your forthrightness, and the very noticeable sincerity, and total lack of hype, fluff, deception, misleading speech, etc. So refreshing, and it keeps me coming back to hear what you have to say, and raises my trust and respect in your word and methods. God bless, brother.oh...great video!
A lot more deer have been killed with 22s than people will admit . I was in a situation and all i had was a 22 auto loader with a 4" barrel .it killed the deer faster than an arrow .not as good as a rifle .you have to get very close and get as goid a shot as possible.but it can be done well . Had 5 hungry kids and no way else to do it .it was survival for real .
Just a tip- I have a Ruger Single-Six, and was troubled with a way to keep both cylinders with me. I found that the extra cylinder fits perfectly in a round leather holder designed for a .357 speed loader for duty belt, and you can keep it loaded, so you always have an extra 6 shots of .22mag on hand.
I love Davids channel because I don't have to be a billionaire to get the stuff he shares with us. Such direct and practical knowledge I have YET to hear a SINGLE word of advice from David that hasn't been gold.
I know that this is an old video, but I just stopped carrying my H&R 12 on Weekend trips and started carrying a Ruger American .22 magnum compact. The rifle really shoots very accurately. 500 rounds of ammunition fits into the space of one box of 12 gauge #5s. I can take deer reliably with the .22 magnum in an emergency and I know that I can hit the center of a pie-plate (or the vital zone of a target) at 200 yards because I have done it. I wouldn't shoot a deer that far away, but defensive shooting is possible at 200 yards. 125 yards is easy shooting. The versatility of the round and the affordability and accuracy of the rifle just pushed the old H&R out of the BO/Bushcraft kit. And, with the H&R being discontinued, parts are going to get scarce. I still hunt with the H&R (it's a 1970 model with red rubber butt pad), but it isn't my go-to. Frankly, I can't help but wonder if the marlin/winchester 30-30, a .22 Ruger Auto and a glock with 6 mags might not be an even better "long-term" combination. We spend a lot of time concentrating on "common man" meaning "Poor guy" preps when our message to those guys maybe ought to be, "Cut some bills, sell some useless crap and get a couple or three high-quality firearms." The Heritage and a H&R probably going to prove inadequate for what most of us see coming. Any way, nobody will read this because the video is so old, but I just thought I'd post some ideas.
Dave, excellent video. You might want to add air rifles to your list of sustainable arms. A air rifle will last quite a while in the day after. The ammo is very cheap and light. A .22 air rifle is very good for acquiring small game.
can't understand how people can waste so much time watching consecutive full seasons of stupid TV shows online, when Dave has over 900 videos here where you can actually LEARN something.
My preferred combo is a .22LR rifle and a .44mag handgun. Most of your foraging will be small game and sitting birds. If you encounter dangerous game without your long gun (ie: fishing, setting traps) it is comforting to know you have something potent on your hip.
Dave , I thought a lot about this video and your are correct , keep it simple . Although I disagree with the Heritage 22lr Revolver . I've shot the Heritage before and didn't care for them at all . The ones I shot weren't nearly as well machined and tight as my Ruger Super Single Six's . However , if a Heritage is all that a beginning prepped can afford it's better that nothing . Again , I think your keep it simple strategy is best with the single shot shotgun and 22 or/22 mag revolver combo . I think often times people get survival and combat mixed up . When your trying to survive it's best to keep unheard and unseen and to avoid all conflict at all cost . Where as combat you take the fight to the enemy .
Informative....I like the fact that you address the 'common' man who may not make a six figure salary. In American today, there really isn't a middle class anymore. There are the have's and the have not's. You are doing an invaluable service to the rest of us...and for that, I thank you.
A 12ga is by far the most versatile firearm in existence and I love my 590a1, that said.. my Ruger 10/22 is about all I'd ever need to stay fed. The reality is few things would chase me out of my house. Chances are the cause would be human, and in that case we all leave out the back with our AR's and packs loaded for life in the bush, plus the Buckmark Hunter :)
This guy is why I bought my HR. I have one of those heritage revolvers. 22lr is great, 22 mag cylinder had some problems ejecting the cartridge, in fact I still have one stick in there.
Dave, thanks for always making awesome videos and getting people to think. Whether they agree with you or they don't, you're getting their neurons firing about survival and maintaining the real traditions of the older times. Too many people plop in front of the TV.... some kids are growing up without ever firing a slingshot... WTF? So thank you, you're raising the bar.
They didn’t have/make .357 inserts when I checked a few months back. My .38 adapter got a 3” group at 100 yards with a front bead sight only. I was sold. PS. I now have rifle sights on my 12 gauge topper. I expect with them to get an even tighter group.
Dave, I admire the passion you have for teaching others and for going out of your way to help other people. You truly are a pretty good person, god bless you brother and I hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving.
Dave/Pathfinder School, I cant believe the quality of information you provide in every video. I have just finished your Modern Trapping Series and now have moved into your other video and I can tell you I feel that my chances of survival and long term sustainability have multiplied ten fold. Your attention to detail and clear passion for the natural world are truly inspiring. I give you great thanks for posting these videos. I hope to make it out and learn hands on at the Pathfinder School.
Thanks for all your hard work Dave! I think your recommendations are spot on for these weapons however, having a Heritage Rough Rider .22 and shooting it a lot I have to warn everyone that the hand spring WILL break under normal use. I have broken 3 so far under normal range use (about every 2000 rounds) and each time it renders the gun inoperable. It's cheap to replace but needs to be considered before staking ones life. Thanks again! I've learned a lot from you.
Dave, liked your show with Cody, love your series here on TH-cam, with that said I am retired Navy. I was an armorer for most of my career of 22 years. It's not a good idea to run steel wool through your firearms. Although a shotgun is more forgiving on what you can fire through it, it will shorten the life of the barrel to run scratchy steel wool through it. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your series here.
I use a 12 gauge single shot. it is my only shotgun. It came with a secondary barrel in .243 which I use to hunt big game including elk. Your mentioning the .22 wmr is great. I think .22 magnum is the best round made; I use it to put many meals on my family's table. Thanks for the video.
I carry a Heritage 22lr/22mag myself and love it as a small hunting gun, i use it a ton and it really is bomb proof and a great price. hoping for a 22lr adapter for my 12 ga from mama clause this year.
Great stuff as always from Mr Canterbury. One of the comments below mentions H & R not being available. I am (mostly) based in the UK. I have have two Rossi single shot 12 bores. (Yes they are not made in the USA , which may be an issue for some. Not me though) . One with a matched .243 barrel. (Yes, amazing, we can own guns in the UK!!) Sadly no handguns anymore in the UK unless you are a criminal who isn't bothered about the law. I partner my single 12g with a .410 adapter. Covers a few bases , packs easily .410 rounds weigh not a lot. After the fact I would for certain take the single 12g with the .410 adapter. Would like to take all my guns of course but most likely take the BRNO .22 if I can carry that also. However would bug in as long as possible as I have a rural location. Keep up the good work David. God bless and thanks.
i got that same pistol as well as other .22 pistols and rifles. i actually just got a .22 savage single shot bolt action rifle for 50 bucks at some guys garage sale and that is all i use for squirrel hunting now. rock on Dave!
Dave just watched 4 of your "Bullet Proof" series. Just want to say Awesome job! and Very helpful and very informative. I see them almost as short equipment summaries and I have recommended them to family and friends already. Home run Dave!
Good suggestions for everyday woods guns. Telling my age a little here but i carry a savage 24-c backpack gun and a H&R 22/22 mag for everyday woods carry. Both are getting somewhat rare and the Savage is expensive now if you can find one. They were both very cheap 30 plus years ago.
I pre ordered that 45lc adapter and put the pathfinder code in the coupon box and you get a 10% discount not 20%.. Either way I own a bunch of these for my 12g my 16g and my 20g. For the 12g I have the full length rifled in 9mm and .22 waiting on the 45lc and I have the shorty's for my other single shots. I let the quary dictate which adapter I bring out with me. Thanks for the great product info.
If companies can't discriminate based on sex, color, or religion. Why can Goggle and TH-cam discriminate based on political orintation. If liberal ideals are superior to conservative ideals let them compete fairly and unobtrusively. In other words Goggle and TH-cam need to stop minipulating and censoring people and ideas that don't fit their paradim. If you love freedom you should welcome opposing views and ideas. Censorship is completely unexceptionable to just promote your thought control.
good video my single 12 has thousands of rounds through it and still going strong,I dont use it much anymore, but it has harvested more grouse and rabbits than any other shotgun I own. Good video.
I have the stainless Ruger Single Six. I don't have a single shot break action shotgun yet but looking to get an H&R soon. I do have other shotguns including a Stoeger Coach Gun which I believe makes a decent sustainable firearm as well. Great video series Dave!
I don't know if you're aware, Dave, but the H&R single shots have all been discontinued. It would be great to see a video on what you think are the best alternatives.
Always enjoy your Vids Dave🇺🇸. A 22 lR will drop large game when shot placement is used with precision. A shot placed into the Ear/Brain shot’-on a large Wild Hog Will drop em instantly-!!! Same goes with Bear or any large game. A Marlin papoose’ is great survival weapon, -but for ultimate reliability -an old closet Queen’ excellent condition single shot bolt Rifle-Winchester/Savage/Remington/Marlin- preferably one from the 1960’s or earlier. I like the Ruger’ Bearcat’ for its weight.
Hello Dave I was cleanning my rifles and shot guns with corn oil it worked ok for cleanning my 410 shotgun bore. But on my lever action 44 marlin the next morning after I oiled it up with vegtable oil it was all setup with a thick grease. lever was hung up. I had to set it up by the fire to thaw out the corn oil then I had to tear down the whole rifle to clean out the white grease. Now I know any talo works good. but on moveable parts it dont cake up like vegtable oil did.
Great VID Dave. I was able to find and purchase the same shotgun at a local pawn shop for less than $100 and I'm saving for the adapter kits...I certainly appreciate you sharing your God given talent and knowledge with the rest of us!
I was carrying this combo while hunting last week, (BTW choate after market stocks will only fit '70s era H&R single shots, unfortunately mine is from the '20s) but it was a good system. Im saving up for the adapters, and 22 will be my first one. I will say the Ruger 6 is an amazing gun that is so easy to maintain and I like it alot. Never owned a Heritage so I cant speak for them. But im sure it will do just the same. 12ga/22cal is a truly bullet proof combo. Thanks for your wisdom Dave!
Hello Dave, screw all the rumors from the tv show, I get a lot from your videos, I have never watched the show, its results that matter and your videos give me some needed push in the right direction. I have been thinking along these same lines in regards to a 12 gauge single the adapters add to the value of such a firearm. Have a good day and God bless...
Fast reloading a single shot shotgun is a matter of practice and a few small tricks. I watched my cousin take three canada geese out of the same flight with his single shot H&R 10 gauge. He had one round in the gun, and two extras between the fingers of his left hand (on the forearm of the gun). He shot the first goose, thumbed the latch to open the action, reached forward, took the next round out of his hand on the forend (that hand never changed position), reloaded, shot, then did it again.
just a thought. Rossi makes a great gun combo. its a break over with interchangable barrels most come with a 12 guage, a .22, and 243 barrels. if your not wanting to carry a side arm this gun is a great idea, and small enough to fit in most packs.
good Idea on the veggie oil, or others. Shoot Ive seen Video of Afgains tiying there bood laces in knots and diping it in motor oil to clean there AK's; I guess the same could be used with 550? never tried it though. I need to pick up a single 12, got a 16 and 20. Handed down through the years. Great video. You also sparked an interest for me in that Mosin. Thanks for the info
to clean my single shot I use a piece of string a little longer than the barrel put a small nut on the end and then add the 12 gauge cleaning adaptor for the cleaning cloths. you use the nut to help aid the string down the barrel, very small and you can pack it tight inside a altoids can along with other adaptors and cleaning supplies. just a thought
Mr. Canterbury I respect the views in all your videos. I would like to caution about using oils not intended for firearms. If you use your firearm regularly you may not have any issues using vegetable oil. However if the weapon is to be stored for a long period of time vegetable oil looses its normal properties. I believe Remington had a legal action filed against them when safeties failed from this very issue. Thank you for what you do for us and our families through educating us. God bless you, your family, and your business.
their is the new savage model 42, not exactly the same but is the .22/.419 O/U design, put a thing on the side and you can carry all your ammo. Not as small and light but it is close
a 8 inch .22 mag would be very cool. I know the long rifle round is alot cheaper but the .22 mag is a very underrated round that is extremely versatile
Well you can't argue with that down to earth advice. I would add that the Ruger 22/45 bull barrel is now around $300 (a bargain!) and it will pin point out-shoot the Heritage or even the Single Six any day, which makes it a much more effective hunter.
Hi Dave, Just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching and appreciate all you do and teach in your videos. Can't wait till my little boy is old enough to go out with me and do the stuff you teach. Granted I have a few years to go for that. But I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. Anyway thanks for the videos and the knowledge.
Dave have you ever a looked at Big Bore Airguns like the 50 caliber dragon slayer or the 909 air gun in 45 caliber if not check these are guns out buddy
I have had no problems with either, no failures to fire, no light primer strikes. They are great to have, as they eat the cheap .22lrs my other pistols won't. With the Ruger, you're paying for a better looking firearm, but they are both built like a tank. You could buffalo a rhino with it and neither would break. I keep the .22 magnum cylinder in my Heritage. They both share the same accuracy for me, I shaved down the front sight on both of them, and touched up the finish I destroyed doing it.
Another great video, brother. The biggest benefit to using vegetable oil for greasing a gun is that every shot will smell like french fries. Ooh, bacon grease...that would be perfect. 12ga and .22LR, the two best survival calibers...unless its urban survival, then I'd go with 9mm and 12ga. Semper Fi
Obviously I'm several years late to this video... But from what I understand you can put a 357 barrel on the shotgun receiver if it is H&R. I think it's a 22 inch barrel. Which is pretty packable and more accurate then putting in the adaptor. Thoughts? Concerns?
It is a person who through training and stockpiling, is preparing for something, be it a natural disaster or a situation without the rule of law. This often entails learning skills, being armed and having food/medical/ect supplies, some try to go as "off grid" as possible with solar power and the like, most are rural due to the greater amount of land.
Would you recommend a double-barreled shotgun as well? I was thinking it could be a good combination with the 22lr conversion barrel in one barrel for small game and a rifled slug or buckshot in the other for larger game depending on what you come across while hunting, although it would be heavier.
Hay dave here is another gun for u to add on a mossburg 500 there a great gun with a rifle barrel and a good slug you can shoot deer out to 200 yards not to mention you can use the gun left or right handed because the safety is on top of the gun I hope you show it
Just my .02 as a gunsmith but you may find yourself further ahead to buy the single six over the heritage Arms. The heritage Arms is a great dispatch pistol for on the trapline but isn’t nearly as accurate at much of any range. The single six is noticeably more accurate and is constructed of steel and aluminum vs the rough rider being made of minimal steel and a zinc frame.
thats what ive been telling people all along that the adapters are great ona single shot to match the sidearm, most people think it will turn it into a rifle, and the 3in adapters really turn it into a darranger not a rifle
my guess is that there are trolls out there that JUST come on here to hit the dislike and move on. My personal bet would be that every one of dave's vids that have a dislike are made by the same people. Just speculating.
I had emailed the company that sells these and asked the same question. You could do the same but their response to me was any break open "SHOULD" work. If you have a specific model it won't hurt to contact them and ask just to be sure.
one thing i like about ball and cap is that i know how to make the caps out of soda cans and i know how to make the powder and i know how to make the balls so best for me in Long Term Sustainability is to do both you can never have to much ammo
you carry a 6lb tarp brother and you've said you don't skimp weight on tools and that firearms and cookpots were the two most important pieces of kit for the frontiersman. Stoeger Outback O/U all day brother. Something to be said for those TWO QUICK shots, could be the difference more a few more pounds of meat, which ain't nothin to sneeze at in the bush. M6 is a great one too, though I prefer 12g's. Great vids Dave, thanks brother
Also would you recommend the 20 gauge adapter for any other reason besides ammo versatility? For example deer hunting with 20 gauge slugs through the 12 to be able to pack more shells for a longer outing? (not that you need a ton of rounds for a deer hunt, but for longer term staying in the woods)
Love the combo Dave. This has been my go-to combo anytime I wanna put meat on the table, except my. 22 pistol is a single-six. Also I will back you 100% on the Short Lane adapters, I bought several a couple of months ago, and the quality & accuracy really blew me away. And thank you Dave, for the Pathfinder discount.
I have a Single-Six as well, they're cool little guns. It's stainless steel which is nice for all weather outdoor use. Plus you can shoot almost any type of .22 ammo in them. CB's short, long, long rifle. As a side note Ruger will upgrade the hammer and a few other parts in older models (pre-1973) of Single-Six for free. Has something to do with a potential safety issue, where the pistol will accidentally fire if the hammer is struck from being dropped, etc.
I've been looking at the henry single shot, bit more expensive than the turkish ones i can find but the henry is very well built and worth the 4-500 dollars to me and i feel it'll last a life time or two. A couple rifle adapters and a 38 adapter would be perfect for me. My carry and bedside guns are 38s. I can get training ammo by the bulk near me. 22 as well. But a good 308 adapter and a 556 adapter added on in a little pouch would make this perfect.
Dave, when you say "common man," I think you're meaning affordability, but I'm not sure. Am I on the right track? I'm just curious because you use that term a lot. Thanks, Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless.
Dave, I picked up two little bottles of 2% tincture of Iodine at Osco Drugs for 1.60 ea. I love when something so small can effect your survivability in such a large way. I am stealing your vocab. Don't listen to nay sayers about doing gun vids. I have a Ruger 10/22 and just watched your vid on that. Good stuff. Tell me that there is a TV producer wise enough to give you a show. Cody, put come dang shoes on! Nice guy, knowledgeable, but Cody creates drama every show with those tender feet!
Where you use the single 12 ga. I use the 410 here in Southeast ga our game is much smaller plus put the 22 hornet rifle insert .you can take a 12 ga buck shot each lead makes a round that can kill our deer easy so a pack of 5 rounds 9 pellets to the round you get the picture.but that's for me and possibly me alone for less than 100 yards after that 22 hornet up to 250 yards .game to be got Deer, hogs, and all the small game you want . That's not taking anything away from the 12 of course great weapon.
Looks like you and some really good mountains for hunting. I don't know what state or country you're in. I'm in Virginia in the Appalachians and I enjoy watching your shows you put on
Hi Dave, for long-term survival, are more interesting air rifles. Only air and pellets that are easy to weigh. Accurate shooting range of 100 meters. High accuracy EDgan Matador in caliber 6.35. But they need a pump to pump air. If you can go down to the woods with an air rifle.
i have a Remington 870 with a slug and bird barrel, plus chokes. With that one gun i can pretty much hunt everything in my home state of Minnesota. That single shot sure is nice though.
Speaking of the M6 scout I just remembered when I was browseing through my 2013 buyer's guide a couple months ago I found out that Springfield Armory is going to start reproduction of it and is currently selling accessories for that weapon...Price was I believe around $250 for the new models
My father who was a grown man during the depression always said if you had a shotgun and a small piece of land for a garden you would never go hungry. I had a young man on a tight budget ask me what to get for hunting . I suggested a single shot 12 G if he was going to hunt small game to deer also an inexpensive inline muzzleloader so he could hunt both blackpowder and regular season .
I love my single six with both cylinders it's been past down in my family it's a work horse, won't that three inch .410 adapter shoot 45lc aswell if you had too!!!
Great video , the old people in the mountains where I grew up said if you had a 12 gauge & a 22 pistol that was all you needed . Back in the early 20th century & depression era when my grandparents were young.

I like the use of the term "after the fact" to low-key talk about WROL.
Just a tip-

Grabbed up the Ruger Single 6 today and a NEF single shot 12 gauge. Love your videos I never stop learning from you.

Good video.
Hello Dave:) Any news on the M6 Scout Replica project? I remember you said that you were working with a manufacturer on such a rifle>
Regards
44 magnum revolver + slingshot are my favorites
Like going back and watching the older videos, and see what I missed
I can not argue with a 12 gauge, All your points are so true. Keep up with the good videos and thank you for your time. Thumbs up!
just a thought.
Thanks for the info
to clean my single shot I use a piece of string a little longer than the barrel put a small nut on the end and then add the 12 gauge cleaning adaptor for the cleaning cloths. you use the nut to help aid the string down the barrel, very small and you can pack it tight inside a altoids can along with other adaptors and cleaning supplies. just a thought
those adapters are AMAZING!
I don't know how I'm just finding your channel. Great channel
a 8 inch .22 mag would be very cool.
I like these videos! A twelve gauge is awesome, home defense, go to war, hunting all kind of game, having fun.
Dave have you ever a looked at Big Bore Airguns like the 50 caliber dragon slayer or the 909 air gun in 45 caliber if not check these are guns out buddy
My favorite out of the duel survival show people 👍 good to see you
I have had no problems with either, no failures to fire, no light primer strikes.
Thoughts? Concerns?
Savage 42 MSRP is $480 You can pick up an H&R 12ga and purchase 4-5 caliber adapters for that price. It does look really cool though.
It is a person who through training and stockpiling, is preparing for something, be it a natural disaster or a situation without the rule of law. This often entails learning skills, being armed and having food/medical/ect supplies, some try to go as "off grid" as possible with solar power and the like, most are rural due to the greater amount of land.
shortlane adaptors is a great idea thanks
I have two Heritage Arms 22/mag pistols. I paid under $200 per pistol. Well made, highly recommended.
Would you recommend a double-barreled shotgun as well? I was thinking it could be a good combination with the 22lr conversion barrel in one barrel for small game and a rifled slug or buckshot in the other for larger game depending on what you come across while hunting, although it would be heavier.
Great video thank you Mr Canterbury.
Hay dave here is another gun for u to add on a mossburg 500 there a great gun with a rifle barrel and a good slug you can shoot deer out to 200 yards not to mention you can use the gun left or right handed because the safety is on top of the gun I hope you show it
Thank you so much for this video. I am fond of one sho gun (I have one in 12 Ga and one in 20 Ga). Serge from France.
thanX for all your great work and education you provide to so many.
Great video yes single shot 12ga is a excellent weapon the heritage 22 can be found at about 120.00 150.00 wt the 22mag cylinder.
Good work as always Dave, God bless.
Used the Pathfinder code for a discount on an adapter for my 20 gauge H&R. Happy Thanksgiving!
I had emailed the company that sells these and asked the same question. You could do the same but their response to me was any break open "SHOULD" work. If you have a specific model it won't hurt to contact them and ask just to be sure.
one thing i like about ball and cap
is that i know how to make the caps out of soda cans
and i know how to make the powder
and i know how to make the balls
so best for me in Long Term Sustainability is to do both
you can never have to much ammo
most my guns are 22lrs and 12 GA. Nice to see like-minded people
you carry a 6lb tarp brother and you've said you don't skimp weight on tools and that firearms and cookpots were the two most important pieces of kit for the frontiersman.
I thought alot about this same issue. Dave is right
I've been looking at the henry single shot, bit more expensive than the turkish ones i can find but the henry is very well built and worth the 4-500 dollars to me and i feel it'll last a life time or two.
Thanks, Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless.
nice vid happy thanksgiving dave and all of you people out there
Dave, I picked up two little bottles of 2% tincture of Iodine at Osco Drugs for 1.60 ea.
Genuine, practical and affordable.
👍☘️😎 liking the caliber adapter's Dave Canterbury
Love your videos. Education about the basics of surval is so important. Thank you.
Speaking of the M6 scout I just remembered when I was browseing through my 2013 buyer's guide a couple months ago I found out that Springfield Armory is going to start reproduction of it and is currently selling accessories for that weapon...Price was I believe around $250 for the new models
Hey Dave why don't you just shoot the deer with a slug? Or buck? I like the adapters don't get me wrong Im just curious.
I'd love to see you review a WASR AK-47 for sustainability against LOOTERS!!!!
